Applications of Nijenhuis geometry II: maximal pencils of multihamiltonian structures of hydrodynamic type

We connect two a priori unrelated topics, theory of geodesically equivalent metrics in differential geometry, and theory of compatible infinite dimensional Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type in mathematical physics. Namely, we prove that a pair of geodesically equivalent metrics such that one is flat produces a pair of such brackets. We construct Casimirs for these brackets and the corresponding commuting flows. There are two ways to produce a large family of compatible Poisson structures from a pair of geodesically equivalent metrics one of which is flat. One of these families is $(n+1)(n+2)/2$ dimensional; we describe it completely and show that it is maximal. Another has dimension $\le n+2$ and is, in a certain sense, polynomial. We show that a nontrivial polynomial family of compatible Poisson structures of dimension $n+2$ is unique and comes from a pair of geodesically equivalent metrics. In addition, we generalise a result of Sinjukov (1961) from constant curvature metrics to arbitrary Einstein metrics.

Local normal forms for c-projectively equivalent metrics and proof of the Yano-Obata conjecture in arbitrary signature. Proof of the projective Lichnerowicz conjecture for Lorentzian metrics

Two Kähler metrics on a complex manifold are called c-projectively equivalent if their $J$-planar curves coincide. These curves are defined by the property that the acceleration is complex proportional to the velocity. We give an explicit local description of all pairs of c-projectively equivalent Kähler metrics of arbitrary signature and use this description to prove the classical Yano-Obata conjecture: we show that on a closed connected Kähler manifold of arbitrary signature, any c-projective vector field is an affine vector field unless the manifold is $CP^n$ with (a multiple of) the Fubini-Study metric. As a by-product, we prove the projective Lichnerowicz conjecture for metrics of Lorentzian signature: we show that on a closed connected Lorentzian manifold, any projective vector field is an affine vector field.

Geometrisation of Chaplygin's reducing multiplier theorem

We develop the reducing multiplier theory for a special class of nonholonomic dynamical systems and show that the non-linear Poisson brackets naturally obtained in the framework of this approach are all isomorphic to the Lie-Poisson $e(3)$-bracket. As two model examples, we consider the Chaplygin ball problem on the plane and the Veselova system. In particular, we obtain an integrable gyrostatic generalisation of the Veselova system.

Topological monodromy as an obstruction to Hamiltonization of nonholonomic systems: pro or contra?

The phenomenon of a topological monodromy in integrable Hamiltonian and nonholonomic systems is discussed. An efficient method for computing and visualizing the monodromy is developed. The comparative analysis of the topological monodromy is given for the rolling ellipsoid of revolution problem in two cases, namely, on a smooth and on a rough plane. The first of these systems is Hamiltonian, the second is nonholonomic. We show that, from the viewpoint of monodromy, there is no difference between the two systems, and thus disprove the conjecture by Cushman and Duistermaat stating that the topological monodromy gives a topological obstruction for Hamiltonization of the rolling ellipsoid of revolution on a rough plane.

Four-dimensional Kähler metrics admitting c-projective vector fields

A vector field on a Kähler manifold is called c-projective if its flow preserves the J-planar curves. We give a complete local classification of Kähler real 4-dimensional manifolds that admit an essential c-projective vector field. An important technical step is a local description of 4-dimensional c-projectively equivalent metrics of arbitrary signature. As an application of our results we prove the natural analog of the classical Yano-Obata conjecture in the pseudo-Riemannian 4-dimensional case.

Normal forms for pseudo-Riemannian 2-dimensional metrics whose geodesic flows admit integrals quadratic in momenta

We discuss pseudo-Riemannian metrics on 2-dimensional manifolds such that the geodesic flow admits a nontrivial integral quadratic in velocities. We construct local normal forms of such metrics. We show that these metrics have certain useful properties similar to those of Riemannian Liouville metrics, namely: 1) they admit geodesically equivalent metrics; 2) one can use them to construct a big family of natural systems admitting integrals quadratic in momenta; 3) the integrability of such systems can be generalized to the quantum setting; 4) these natural systems are integrable by quadratures.

Splitting and gluing constructions for geodesically equivalent pseudo-Riemannian metrics

Two metrics $g $ and $\bar g$ are geodesically equivalent, if they share the same (unparameterized) geodesics. We introduce two constructions that allow one to reduce many natural problems related to geodesically equivalent metrics, such as the classification of local normal forms and the Lie problem (the description of projective vector fields), to the case when the (1,1)-tensor $G^i_j:= g^{ik} \bar g_{kj}$ has one real eigenvalue, or two complex conjugate eigenvalues, and give first applications. As a part of the proof of the main result, we generalize Topalov-Sinjukov (hierarchy) Theorem for pseudo-Riemannian metrics

Fubini Theorem for pseudo-Riemannian metrics

We generalize the following classical result of Fubini for pseudo-Riemannian metrics: if three essentially different metrics on $M^{n\ge 3}$ share the same unparametrized geodesics, and two of them (say, $g$ and $\bar g$) are strictly nonproportional (i.e., the minimal polynomial of $g^{iα} \bar g_{αj}$ coincides with the characteristic polynomial) at least at one point, then they have constant curvature.

Geodesics on the Ellipsoid and Monodromy

The equations for geodesic flow on the ellipsoid are well known, and were first solved by Jacobi in 1838 by separating the variables of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In 1979 Moser investigated the case of the general ellipsoid with distinct semi-axes and described a set of integrals which weren't know classically. After reviewing the properties of geodesic flow on the three dimensional ellipsoid with distinct semi-axes, we investigate the three dimensional ellipsoid with the two middle semi-axes being equal, corresponding to a Hamiltonian invariant under rotations. The system is Liouville-integrable and thus the invariant manifolds corresponding to regular points of the energy momentum map are 3-dimensional tori. An analysis of the critical points of the energy momentum maps gives the bifurcation diagram. We find the fibres of the critical values of the energy momentum map, and carry out an analysis of the action variables. We show that the obstruction to the existence of single valued globally smooth action variables is monodromy.
