Stability analysis of compactification in 3-d order Lovelock gravity

It is known that spatial curvature can stabilize extra dimensions in Lovelock gravity. In the present paper we study stability of the stabilization solutions in 3-d order Lovelock gravity. We show that in the case of negative spatial curvature of extra dimension space the stabilization solution is always stable. On the contrary, for positive spatial curvature the stability depends on the coupling constant values.

Global portraits of nonminimal inflation

We reconsider the dynamical systems approach to analyze inflationary universe in the Jordan frame models of scalar field nonminimally coupled to curvature. The adopted set of variables allows us to clearly distinguish between different asymptotic states in the phase space, including the kinetic and inflationary regimes. Inflation is realized as a heteroclinic trajectory originating either at infinity from a nonhyperbolic asymptotic de Sitter point or from a regular saddle de Sitter point. We also present a comprehensive picture of possible initial conditions leading to sufficient inflationary expansion and show their extent on the phase diagrams. In addition we comment on the slow roll conditions applicable in the Jordan frame and show how they approximate the leading inflationary "attractor solution". As particular examples we portrait quadratic and quartic potential models and note that increasing the nonminimal coupling diminishes the range of good initial conditions in the quadratic case, but enlarges is in the quartic case.

Anisotropic cosmological dynamics in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity: an example of dynamical compactification in 7+1 dimensions

We consider a particular example of dynamical compactification of an anisotropic 7+1 dimensional Universe in Einstein - Gauss - Bonnet gravity. Starting from rather general totally anisotropic initial conditions a Universe in question evolves towards a product of two isotropic subspaces. The first subspace expands isotropically, the second represents an "inner" isotropic subspace with stabilized size. The dynamical evolution does not require fine-tuning of initial conditions, though it is possible for a particular range of coupling constants. The corresponding condition have been found analytically and have been confirmed using numerical integration of equations of motion.

Velocities of distant objects in General Relativity revisited

We consider two most popular definitions of velocities of remote objects in General Relativity. Our work has two motivations. From a research point of view, we generalize the formula connecting these two velocities in FRW metrics found by Chodorowski to arbitrary synchronous spherically symmetric metrics. From a methodological point of view, our goal is to outline certain counter-intuitive properties of the definitions in question, which would allow to use them when it is reasonable and to avoid incorrect statements, based on inappropriate use of intuition.

Asymptotic cosmological regimes in scalar-torsion gravity with a perfect fluid

We consider cosmological dynamics of nonminimally coupled scalar field in the scalar-torsion gravity in the presence of a hydrodynamical matter. Potential of the scalar field have been chosen as power-law with negative index, this type of potentials is usually used in quintessence scenarios. We identify several asymptotic regimes, including de Sitter, kinetic dominance, kinetic tracker and tracker solution and study conditions for their existence and stability. We show that for each combination of coupling constant and potential power index one of regimes studied in the present paper is stable to the future.

General relativity as an attractor for scalar-torsion cosmology

We study flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological models for a scalar field coupled nonminimally to teleparallel gravity with generic coupling and potential functions. The goal of this paper is to determine the conditions under which the cosmological evolution tends to the limit where the variation of the gravitational "constant" ceases and the system evolves close to general relativity. These conditions can be read off from the approximate analytical solutions describing the process in matter and potential domination eras. Only those models where the GR limit exists and is an attractor can be considered viable. We expect the results to hold in the original "pure tetrad" formulation as well as in the recently suggested covariant formulation of the teleparallel theory. In the former case the GR attractor simultaneously provides a mechanism how cosmological evolution suppresses the problematic degrees of freedom stemming from the lack of local Lorentz invariance.

Dynamical features of scalar-torsion theories

We investigate the cosmological dynamics in teleparallel gravity with nonminimal coupling. We analytically extract several asymptotic solutions and we numerically study the exact phase-space behavior. Comparing the obtained results with the corresponding behavior of nonminimal scalar-curvature theory, we find significant differences, such is the rare stability and the frequent presence of oscillatory behavior.

Non-constant volume exponential solutions in higher-dimensional Lovelock cosmologies

In this paper we propose a scheme which allows one to find all possible exponential solutions of special class -- non-constant volume solutions -- in Lovelock gravity in arbitrary number of dimensions and with arbitrate combinations of Lovelock terms. We apply this scheme to (6+1)- and (7+1)-dimensional flat anisotropic cosmologies in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet and third-order Lovelock gravity to demonstrate how our scheme does work. In course of this demonstration we derive all possible solutions in (6+1) and (7+1) dimensions and compare solutions and their abundance between cases with different Lovelock terms present. As a special but more "physical" case we consider spaces which allow three-dimensional isotropic subspace for they could be viewed as examples of compactification schemes. Our results suggest that the same solution with three-dimensional isotropic subspace is more "probable" to occur in the model with most possible Lovelock terms taken into account, which could be used as kind of anthropic argument for consideration of Lovelock and other higher-order gravity models in multidimensional cosmologies.

Constant volume exponential solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet flat anisotropic cosmology with a perfect fluid

In this paper we investigate the constant volume exponential solutions (i.e. the solutions with the scale factors change exponentially over time so that the comoving volume remains the same) in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find conditions for these solutions to exist and show that they are compatible with any perfect fluid with the equation of state parameter $ω<1/3$ if the matter density of the Universe exceeds some critical value. We write down some exact solutions which generalize ones found in our previous paper for models with a cosmological constant.

Exact exponential solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet flat anisotropic cosmology

In this paper we are looking for the exponential solutions (i.e. the solutions with the scale factors change exponentially over time) in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We argue that we found all possible non-constant-volume solutions (up to permutations) in lower dimensions ((4+1) and (5+1)) and developed a scheme which allows one to find necessary conditions in arbitrary dimension.

Reconstruction and deceleration-acceleration transitions in modified gravity

We discuss the cosmological reconstruction in modified Gauss-Bonnet and F(R) gravities. Two alternative representations of the action (with and without auxiliary scalar) are considered. The approximate description of deceleration-acceleration transition cosmologies is reconstructed. It is shown that cosmological solution containing Big Bang and Big Rip singularities may be reconstructed only using the representation with the auxiliary field. The analytical description of the deceleration-acceleration transition cosmology in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is demonstrated to be impossible at sufficiently general conditions.
