Estimating the Shannon entropy and (un)certainty relations for design-structured POVMs

Complementarity relations between various characterizations of a probability distribution are at the core of information theory. In particular, lower and upper bounds for the entropic function are of great importance. In applied topics, we often deal with situations, where the sums of certain powers of probabilities are known. The main question is how to convert the imposed restrictions into two-sided estimates on the Shannon entropy. It is addressed in two different ways. The more intuitive of them is based on truncated expansions of the Taylor type. Another method is based on the use of coefficients of the shifted Chebyshev polynomials. We propose here a family of polynomials for estimating the Shannon entropy from below. As a result, estimates are more uniform in the sense that errors do not become too large in particular points. The presented method is used for deriving uncertainty and certainty relations for positive operator-valued measures assigned to a quantum design. Quantum designs are currently the subject of active researches due to potential use in quantum information science. It is shown that the derived estimates are applicable in quantum tomography and detecting steerability of quantum states.

Quantum search degeneration under amplitude noise in queries to the oracle

We examine how amplitude noise in queries to the oracle degrades a performance of quantum search algorithm. The Grover search and similar techniques are widely used in various quantum algorithms, including cases where rival parties are fighting over confidential data. Hence, the oracle-box wires become the subject of competing activity with an alteration of their normal functioning. Of course, many kinds of errors could arise in this way. Possible influence of dephasing on quantum search was already addressed in the literature. Amplitude damping is another type of errors that should be analyzed first. To study the problem, we introduce a simple model of collective distortions with the use of amplitude damping channel. All the quantities of interest should be considered as functions of the number of Grover's iterations. In particular, we investigate the success probability with respect to the parameter that characterizes the level of amplitude errors. The success probability degrades significantly even if the error amount is not essential. Namely, this probability soon enough reduces to a value close to one half. We also study trade-off relations between quantum coherence and the success probability in the presence of amplitude noise.

Rényi formulation of uncertainty relations for POVMs assigned to a quantum design

Information entropies provide powerful and flexible way to express restrictions imposed by the uncertainty principle. This approach seems to be very suitable in application to problems of quantum information theory. It is typical that questions of such a kind involve measurements having one or another specific structure. The latter often allows us to improve entropic bounds that follow from uncertainty relations of sufficiently general scope. Quantum designs have found use in many issues of quantum information theory, whence uncertainty relations for related measurements are of interest. In this paper, we obtain uncertainty relations in terms of min-entropies and Rényi entropies for POVMs assigned to a quantum design. Relations of the Landau--Pollak type are addressed as well. Using examples of quantum designs in two dimensions, the obtained lower bounds are then compared with the previous ones. An impact on entropic steering inequalities is briefly discussed.

Entropic uncertainty relations for successive measurements of canonically conjugate observables

Uncertainties in successive measurements of general canonically conjugate variables are examined. Such operators are approached within a limiting procedure of the Pegg-Barnett type. Dealing with unbounded observables, we should take into account a finiteness of detector resolution. An appropriate reformulation of two scenarios of successive measurements is proposed and motivated. Uncertainties are characterized by means of generalized entropies of both the Rényi and Tsallis types. The Rényi and Tsallis formulations of uncertainty relations are obtained for both the scenarios of successive measurements of canonically conjugate operators. Entropic uncertainty relations for the case of position and momentum are separately discussed.

Majorization entropic uncertainty relations for quantum operations

Majorization uncertainty relations are derived for arbitrary quantum operations acting on a finite-dimensional space. The basic idea is to consider submatrices of block matrices comprised of the corresponding Kraus operators. This is an extension of the previous formulation, which deals with submatrices of a unitary matrix relating orthogonal bases in which measurements are performed. Two classes of majorization relations are considered: one related to tensor product of probability vectors and another one related to their direct sum. We explicitly discuss an example of a pair of one-qubit operations, each of them represented by two Kraus operators. In the particular case of quantum maps describing orthogonal measurements the presented formulation reduces to earlier results derived for measurements in orthogonal bases. The presented approach allows us also to bound the entropy characterizing results of a single generalized measurement.

Notes on use of generalized entropies in counting

We address an idea of applying generalized entropies in counting problems. First, we consider some entropic properties that are essential for such purposes. Using the $α$-entropies of Tsallis-Havrda-Charvát type, we derive several results connected with Shearer's lemma. In particular, we derive upper bounds on the maximum possible cardinality of a family of $k$-subsets, when no pairwise intersections of these subsets may coincide. Further, we revisit the Minc conjecture. Our approach leads to a family of one-parameter extensions of Brégman's theorem. A utility of the obtained bounds is explicitly exemplified.

On conclusive eavesdropping and measures of mutual information in quantum key distribution

We address the question of quantifying eavesdropper's information gain in an individual attack on systems of quantum key distribution. It is connected with the concept of conclusive eavesdropping introduced by Brandt. Using the BB84 protocol, we examine the problem of estimating a performance of conclusive entangling probe. The question of interest depends on the choice of a quantitative measure of eavesdropper's information about the error-free sifted bits. The Fuchs--Peres--Brandt probe realizes a very powerful individual attack on the BB84 scheme. In the usual formulation, Eve utilizes the Helstrom scheme in distinguishing between the two output probe states. In conclusive eavesdropping, the unambiguous discrimination is used. Comparing these two versions allows to demonstrate serious distinctions between widely used quantifiers of mutual information. In particular, the so-called Rényi mutual information does not seem to be a completely legitimate measure of an amount of mutual information. It is brightly emphasized with the example of conclusive eavesdropping.

Quantum-coherence quantifiers based on the Tsallis relative $α$-entropies

The concept of coherence is one of cornerstones in physics. The development of quantum information science has lead to renewed interest in properly approaching the coherence at the quantum level. Various measures could be proposed to quantify coherence of a quantum state with respect to the prescribed orthonormal basis. To be a proper measure of coherence, each candidate should enjoy certain properties. It seems that the monotonicity property plays a crucial role here. Indeed, there is known an intuitive measure of coherence that does not share this condition. We study coherence measures induced by quantum divergences of the Tsallis type. Basic properties of the considered coherence quantifiers are derived. Trade-off relations between coherence and mixedness are examined. The property of monotonicity under incoherent selective measurements has to be reformulated. The proposed formulation can naturally be treated as a parametric extension of its standard form. Finally, two coherence measures quadratic in moduli of matrix elements are compared from the monotonicity viewpoint.

Rényi and Tsallis formulations of noise-disturbance trade-off relations

We address an information-theoretic approach to noise and disturbance in quantum measurements. Properties of corresponding probability distributions are characterized by means of both the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. Related information-theoretic measures of noise and disturbance are introduced. These definitions are based on the concept of conditional entropy. To motivate introduced measures, some important properties of the conditional Rényi and Tsallis entropies are discussed. There exist several formulations of entropic uncertainty relations for a pair of observables. Trade-off relations for noise and disturbance are derived on the base of known formulations of such a kind.

Separability conditions based on local fine-grained uncertainty relations

Many protocols of quantum information processing use entangled states. Hence, separability criteria are of great importance. We propose new separability conditions for a bipartite finite-dimensional system. They are derived by using fine-grained uncertainty relations. Fine-grained uncertainty relations can be obtained by consideration of the spectral norms of certain positive matrices. One of possible approaches to separability conditions is connected with upper bounds on the sum of maximal probabilities. Separability conditions are often formulated for measurements that have a special structure. For instance, mutually unbiased bases and mutually unbiased measurements can be utilized for such purposes. Using resolution of the identity for each subsystem of a bipartite system, we construct some resolution of the identity in the product of Hilbert spaces. Separability conditions are then formulated in terms of maximal probabilities for a collection of specific outcomes. The presented conditions are compared with some previous formulations. Our results are exemplified with entangled states of a two-qutrit system.

On generalized entropies and information-theoretic Bell inequalities under decoherence

We consider information-theoretic inequalities of the Bell type in the presence of decoherence. It is natural that too strong coupling with the environment can prevent an observation of quantum correlations. In this regard, the use of various entropic functions may give additional capabilities to reveal desired correlations. It was already shown that the Bell and Leggett-Garg inequalities in terms conditional Tsallis entropies are more sensitive in the cases of detection inefficiencies. In this paper, we study capabilities of generalized conditional entropies of the Tsallis type in analyzing the Bell theorem in decoherence scenarios. Two forms of the conditional Tsallis $q$-entropy are known in the literature. We show that each of them can be used for defining a metric in the probability space of interest. Such metrics can be used in realizing the so-called triangle principle. The triangle principle has recently been proposed as a unifying approach to questions of local realism and non-contextuality. Applying the triangle principle leads to the two families of $q$-metric inequalities of the Bell type. Information-theoretic formulations in terms of the $q$-entropic metrics are first discussed for the CHSH scenario in dephasing environment. Then we also revisit $q$-entropic inequalities of the Leggett-Garg type. An environmental influence is modeled by the phase damping channel and by the depolarizing channel.

On the Brukner-Zeilinger approach to information in quantum measurements

We address the problem of properly quantifying information in quantum theory. Brukner and Zeilinger proposed the concept of an operationally invariant measure based on measurement statistics. Their measure of information is calculated with probabilities generated in a complete set of mutually complementary observations. This approach was later criticized for several reasons. We show that some critical points can be overcome by means of natural extension or reformulation of the Brukner-Zeilinger approach. In particular, this approach is connected with symmetric informationally complete measurements. The "total information" of Brukner and Zeilinger can further be treated in the context of mutually unbiased measurements as well as general symmetric informationally complete measurements. The Brukner-Zeilinger measure of information is also examined in the case of detection inefficiencies. It is shown to be decreasing under the action of bistochastic maps. The Brukner-Zeilinger total information can be used for estimating the map norm of quantum operations.

On uncertainty relations and entanglement detection with mutually unbiased measurements

We formulate some properties of a set of several mutually unbiased measurements. These properties are used for deriving entropic uncertainty relations. Applications of mutually unbiased measurements in entanglement detection are also revisited. First, we estimate from above the sum of the indices of coincidence for several mutually unbiased measurements. Further, we derive entropic uncertainty relations in terms of the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. Both the state-dependent and state-independent formulations are obtained. Using the two sets of local mutually unbiased measurements, a method of entanglement detection in bipartite finite-dimensional systems may be realized. A certain trade-off between a sensitivity of the scheme and its experimental complexity is discussed.

Uncertainty and certainty relations for successive projective measurements of a qubit in terms of Tsallis' entropies

We study uncertainty and certainty relations for two successive measurements of two-dimensional observables. Uncertainties in successive measurement are considered within the following two scenarios. In the first scenario, the second measurement is performed on the quantum state generated after the first measurement with completely erased information. In the second scenario, the second measurement is performed on the post-first-measurement state conditioned on the actual measurement outcome. Induced quantum uncertainties are characterized by means of the Tsallis entropies. For two successive projective measurement of a qubit, we obtain minimal and maximal values of related entropic measures of induced uncertainties. Some conclusions found in the second scenario are extended to arbitrary finite dimensionality. In particular, a connection with mutual unbiasedness is emphasized.

Fine-grained uncertainty relations for several quantum measurements

We study fine-grained uncertainty relations for several quantum measurements in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. The proposed approach is based on exact calculation or estimation of the spectral norms of corresponding positive matrices. Fine-grained uncertainty relations of the state-independent form are derived for an arbitrary set of mutually unbiased bases. Such relations are extended with a recent notion of mutually unbiased measurements. The case of so-called mutually biased bases is considered in a similar manner. We also discuss a formulation of fine-grained uncertainty relations in the case of generalized measurements. The general approach is then applied to two measurements related to state discrimination. The case of three rank-one projective measurements is further examined in details. In particular, we consider fine-grained uncertainty relations for mutually unbiased bases in three-dimensional Hilbert space.

Formulation of Leggett-Garg inequalities in terms of $q$-entropies

As is well known, the macroscopic realism and the noninvasive measurability together lead to Leggett-Garg inequalities violated by quantum mechanics. We consider tests of the Leggett-Garg type with use of the $q$-entropies. For all $q\geq1$, quantum mechanics predicts violations of an entire family of $q$-entropic inequalities of the Leggett-Garg type. Violations are exemplified with a quantum spin-$s$ system. In general, entropic Leggett-Garg inequalities give only necessary conditions that some probabilistic model is compatible with the macrorealism in the broader sense. The presented $q$-entropic inequalities allow to widen a class of situations, in which an incompatibility with the macrorealism can be tested. In the considered example, both the strength and range of violations are somehow improved by varying $q$. We also examine $q$-entropic inequalities of the Leggett-Garg type in the case of detection inefficiencies, when the no-click event may occur in each observation. With the use of the $q$-entropic inequalities, the required amount of efficiency may be reduced.

Jarzynski equality for quantum stochastic maps

Jarzynski equality and related fluctuation theorems can be formulated for various setups. Such an equality was recently derived for nonunitary quantum evolutions described by unital quantum operations, i.e., for completely positive, trace-preserving maps, which preserve the maximally mixed state. We analyze here a more general case of arbitrary quantum operations on finite systems and derive the corresponding form of the Jarzynski equality. It contains a correction term due to nonunitality of the quantum map. Bounds for the relative size of this correction term are established and they are applied for exemplary systems subjected to quantum channels acting on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space.

Notes on general SIC-POVMs

An unavoidable task in quantum information processing is how to obtain data about the state of an individual system by suitable measurements. Informationally complete measurements are relevant in quantum state tomography, quantum cryptography, quantum cloning, and other questions. Symmetric informationally complete measurements (SIC-POVMs) form an especially important class of such measurements. We formulate some novel properties and relations for general SIC-POVMs in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. For a given density matrix and any general SIC-POVM, the so-called index of coincidence of generated probability distribution is exactly calculated. Using this result, we obtain state-dependent entropic bounds for a single general SIC-POVM. Lower entropic bounds are derived in terms of the Rényi $α$-entropies for $α\in[2;\infty)$ and the Tsallis $α$-entropies for $α\in(0;2]$. A lower bound on the min-entropy of a SIC-POVM is separately examined. For a pair of general SIC-POVMs, entropic uncertainty relations of the Maassen-Uffink type are considered.

On quantum conditional entropies defined in terms of the $f$-divergences

We consider a family of quantum conditional entropies based on the concept of quantum $f$-divergences. First, we explicitly formulate conditions under which the notion of quantum conditional entropy is well defined in this way. In particular, we demand that the value of conditional entropy be independent of any extension of the principal Hilbert space. Using fundamental properties of the quantum $f$-divergences, several interesting relations for such conditional entropies are formulated. We separately examine an especially important case of quantum conditional entropies related to the Tsallis divergence.

Tests for quantum contextuality in terms of $q$-entropies

The information-theoretic approach to Bell's theorem is developed with use of the conditional $q$-entropies. The $q$-entropic measures fulfill many similar properties to the standard Shannon entropy. In general, both the locality and noncontextuality notions are usually treated with use of the so-called marginal scenarios. These hypotheses lead to the existence of a joint probability distribution, which marginalizes to all particular ones. Assuming the existence of such a joint probability distribution, we derive the family of inequalities of Bell's type in terms of conditional $q$-entropies for all $q\geq1$. Quantum violations of the new inequalities are exemplified within the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) and Klyachko-Can-Binicioǧlu-Shumovsky (KCBS) scenarios. An extension to the case of $n$-cycle scenario is briefly mentioned. The new inequalities with conditional $q$-entropies allow to expand a class of probability distributions, for which the nonlocality or contextuality can be detected within entropic formulation. The $q$-entropic inequalities can also be useful in analyzing cases with detection inefficiencies. Using two models of such a kind, we consider some potential advantages of the $q$-entropic formulation.

Uncertainty and certainty relations for the Pauli observables in terms of the Rényi entropies of order $α\in(0;1]$

We obtain uncertainty and certainty relations of state-independent form for the three Pauli observables with use of the Rényi entropies of order $α\in(0;1]$. It is shown that these entropic bounds are tight in the sense that they are always reached with certain pure states. A new result is the conditions for equality in Rényi-entropy uncertainty relations for the Pauli observables. Upper entropic bounds in the pure-state case are also novel. Combining the presented bounds leads to a band, in which the rescaled average Rényi $α$-entropy ranges for a pure measured state. A width of this band is compared with the Tsallis formulation derived previously.

Uncertainty relations for MUBs and SIC-POVMs in terms of generalized entropies

We formulate uncertainty relations for mutually unbiased bases and symmetric informationally complete measurements in terms of the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. For arbitrary number of mutually unbiased bases in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, we give a family of Tsallis $α$-entropic bounds for $α\in(0;2]$. Relations in a model of detection inefficiences are obtained. In terms of Rényi's entropies, lower bounds are given for $α\in[2;\infty)$. State-dependent and state-independent forms of such bounds are both given. Uncertainty relations in terms of the min-entropy are separately considered. We also obtain lower bounds in term of the so-called symmetrized entropies. The presented results for mutually unbiased bases are extensions of some bounds previously derived in the literature. We further formulate new properties of symmetric informationally complete measurements in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. For a given state and any SIC-POVM, the index of coincidence of generated probability distribution is exactly calculated. Short notes are made on potential use of this result in entanglement detection. Further, we obtain state-dependent entropic uncertainty relations for a single SIC-POVM. Entropic bounds are derived in terms of the Rényi $α$-entropies for $α\in[2;\infty)$ and the Tsallis $α$-entropies for $α\in(0;2]$. In the Tsallis formulation, a case of detection inefficiences is briefly mentioned. For a pair of symmetric informationally complete measurements, we also obtain an entropic bound of Maassen-Uffink type.

Bounds of the Pinsker and Fannes Types on the Tsallis Relative Entropy

Pinsker's and Fannes' type bounds on the Tsallis relative entropy are derived. The monotonicity property of the quantum $f$-divergence is used for its estimating from below. For order $α\in(0,1)$, a family of lower bounds of Pinsker type is obtained. For $α>1$ and the commutative case, upper continuity bounds on the relative entropy in terms of the minimal probability in its second argument are derived. Both the lower and upper bounds presented are reformulated for the case of Rényi's entropies. The Fano inequality is extended to Tsallis' entropies for all $α>0$. The deduced bounds on the Tsallis conditional entropy are used for obtaining inequalities of Fannes' type.

Non-equilibrium equalities with unital quantum channels

A general tool for description of open quantum systems is given by the formalism of quantum operations. Most important of them are trace-preserving maps also known as quantum channels. We discuss those conditions on quantum channels under which the Jarzynski equality and related fluctuation theorems hold. It is essential that the representing quantum channel be unital. Under the mentioned condition, we first derive the corresponding Jarzynski equality. For bistochastic map and its adjoint, we further formulate a theorem of Tasaki-Crooks type. In the context of unital channels, some notes on heat transfer between two quantum systems are given. We also consider the case of a finite system operated by an external agent with a feedback control. When unital channels are applied at the first stage and, for a mutual-information form, at the further ones, we obtain quantum Jarzynski-Sagawa-Ueda relations. These are extension of the previously given results to unital quantum operations.

Uncertainty and certainty relations for complementary qubit observables in terms of Tsallis' entropies

Uncertainty relations for more than two observables have found use in quantum information, though commonly known relations pertain to a pair of observables. We present novel uncertainty and certainty relations of state-independent form for the three Pauli observables with use of the Tsallis $α$-entropies. For all real $α\in(0;1]$ and integer $α\geq2$, lower bounds on the sum of three $α$-entropies are obtained. These bounds are tight in the sense that they are always reached with certain pure states. The necessary and sufficient condition for equality is that the qubit state is an eigenstate of one of the Pauli observables. Using concavity with respect to the parameter $α$, we derive approximate lower bounds for non-integer $α\in(1;+\infty)$. In the case of pure states, the developed method also allows to obtain upper bounds on the entropic sum for real $α\in(0;1]$ and integer $α\geq2$. For applied purposes, entropic bounds are often used with averaging over the individual entropies. Combining the obtained bounds leads to a band, in which the rescaled average $α$-entropy ranges in the pure-state case. A width of this band is essentially dependent on $α$. It can be interpreted as an evidence for sensitivity in quantifying the complementarity.

Unified-entropy trade-off relations for a single quantum channel

Many important properties of quantum channels are quantified by means of entropic functionals. Characteristics of such a kind are closely related to different representations of a quantum channel. In the Jamiołkowski-Choi representation, the given quantum channel is described by the so-called dynamical matrix. Entropies of the rescaled dynamical matrix known as map entropies describe a degree of introduced decoherence. Within the so-called natural representation, the quantum channel is formally posed by another matrix obtained as reshuffling of the dynamical matrix. The corresponding entropies characterize an amount, with which the receiver a priori knows the channel output. As was previously shown, the map and receiver entropies are mutually complementary characteristics. Indeed, there exists a non-trivial lower bound on their sum. First, we extend the concept of receiver entropy to the family of unified entropies. Developing the previous results, we further derive non-trivial lower bounds on the sum of the map and receiver $(q,s)$-entropies. The derivation is essentially based on some inequalities with the Schatten norms and anti-norms.

Entropic formulation of the uncertainty principle for the number and annihilation operators

An entropic approach to formulating uncertainty relations for the number-annihilation pair is considered. We construct some normal operator that traces the annihilation operator as well as commuting quadratures with a complete system of common eigenfunctions. Expanding the measured wave function with respect to them, one obtains a relevant probability distribution. Another distribution is naturally generated by measuring the number operator. Due to the Riesz-Thorin theorem, there exists a nontrivial inequality between corresponding functionals of the above distributions. We find the bound in this inequality and further derive uncertainty relations in terms of both the Renyi and Tsallis entropies. Entropic uncertainty relations for continuous distribution as well as relations for discretized one are presented.

Notes on entropic characteristics of quantum channels

One of most important issues in quantum information theory concerns transmission of information through noisy quantum channels. We discuss few channel characteristics expressed by means of generalized entropies. Such characteristics can often be dealt in line with more usual treatment based on the von Neumann entropies. For any channel, we show that the $q$-average output entropy of degree $q\geq1$ is bounded from above by the $q$-entropy of the input density matrix. Concavity properties of the $(q,s)$-entropy exchange are considered. Fano type quantum bounds on the $(q,s)$-entropy exchange are derived. We also give upper bounds on the map $(q,s)$-entropies in terms of the output entropy, corresponding to the completely mixed input.

Number-phase uncertainty relations in terms of generalized entropies

Number-phase uncertainty relations are formulated in terms of unified entropies which form a family of two-parametric extensions of the Shannon entropy. For two generalized measurements, unified-entropy uncertainty relations are given in both the state-dependent and state-independent forms. A few examples are discussed as well. Using the Pegg--Barnett formalism and the Riesz theorem, we obtain a nontrivial inequality between norm-like functionals of generated probability distributions in finite dimensions. The principal point is that we take the infinite-dimensional limit right for this inequality. Hence number-phase uncertainty relations with finite phase resolutions are expressed in terms of the unified entropies. Especially important case of multiphoton coherent states is separately considered. We also give some entropic bounds in which the corresponding integrals of probability density functions are involved.

Relations for certain symmetric norms and anti-norms before and after partial trace

Changes of some unitarily invariant norms and anti-norms under the operation of partial trace are examined. The norms considered form a two-parametric family, including both the Ky Fan and Schatten norms as particular cases. The obtained results concern operators acting on the tensor product of two finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. For any such operator, we obtain upper bounds on norms of its partial trace in terms of the corresponding dimensionality and norms of this operator. Similar inequalities, but in the opposite direction, are obtained for certain anti-norms of positive matrices. Through the Stinespring representation, the results are put in the context of trace-preserving completely positive maps. We also derive inequalities between the unified entropies of a composite quantum system and one of its subsystems, where traced-out dimensionality is involved as well.

Continuity and Stability of Partial Entropic Sums

Extensions of Fannes' inequality with partial sums of the Tsallis entropy are obtained for both the classical and quantum cases. The definition of kth partial sum under the prescribed order of terms is given. Basic properties of introduced entropic measures and some applications are discussed. The derived estimates provide a complete characterization of the continuity and stability properties in the refined scale. The results are also reformulated in terms of Uhlmann's partial fidelities.

Fano type quantum inequalities in terms of $q$-entropies

Generalizations of the quantum Fano inequality are considered. The notion of $q$-entropy exchange is introduced. This quantity is concave in each of its two arguments. For $q\geq0$, the inequality of Fano type with $q$-entropic functionals is established. The notion of coherent information and the perfect reversibility of a quantum operation are discussed in the context of $q$-entropies. By the monotonicity property, the lower bound of Pinsker type in terms of the trace norm distance is obtained for the Tsallis relative $q$-entropy of order $q=1/2$. For $0\leq{q}\leq2$, Fano type quantum inequalities with freely variable parameters are obtained.

On unified-entropy characterization of quantum channels

We consider properties of quantum channels with use of unified entropies. Extremal unravelings of quantum channel with respect to these entropies are examined. The concept of map entropy is extended in terms of the unified entropies. The map $(q,s)$-entropy is naturally defined as the unified $(q,s)$-entropy of rescaled dynamical matrix of given quantum channel. Inequalities of Fannes type are obtained for introduced entropies in terms of both the trace and Frobenius norms of difference between corresponding dynamical matrices. Additivity properties of introduced map entropies are discussed. The known inequality of Lindblad with the entropy exchange is generalized to many of the unified entropies. For tensor product of a pair of quantum channels, we derive two-sided estimating of the output entropy of a maximally entangled input state.

Some general properties of unified entropies

Basic properties of the unified entropies are examined. The consideration is mainly restricted to the finite-dimensional quantum case. Bounds in terms of ensembles of quantum states are given. Both the continuity in Fannes' sense and stability in Lesche's sense are shown for wide ranges of parameters. In particular, uniform estimates are obtained for the quantum Rényi entropies. Stability properties in the thermodynamic limit are discussed as well. It is shown that the unified entropies enjoy both the subadditivity and triangle inequality for a certain range of parameters. Non-decreasing of all the unified entropies under projective measurement is proved.

Upper continuity bounds on the relative $q$-entropy for $q>1$

Generalized entropies and relative entropies are the subject of active research. Similar to the standard relative entropy, the relative $q$-entropy is generally unbounded for $q>1$. Upper bounds on the quantum relative $q$-entropy in terms of norm distances between its arguments are obtained in finite-dimensional context. These bounds characterize a continuity property in the sense of Fannes.

A Shrinking Factor for Unitarily Invariant Norms under a Completely Positive Map

A relation between values of a unitarily invariant norm of Hermitian operator before and after action of completely positive map is studied. If the norm is jointly defined on both the input and output Hilbert spaces, one defines a shrinking factor under the restriction of given map to Hermitian operators. As it is shown, for any unitarily invariant norm this shrinking factor is not larger than the maximum of two values for the spectral norm and the trace norm.

Bounds on Shannon distinguishability in terms of partitioned measures

A family of quantum measures like the Shannon distinguishability is presented. These measures are defined over the two classes of POVM measurements and related to separate parts in the expression for mutual information. Changes of Ky Fan's norms and the partitioned trace distances under the operation of partial trace are discussed. Upper and lower bounds on the introduced quantities are obtained in terms of partitioned trace distances and Uhlmann's partial fidelities. These inequalities provide a kind of generalization of the well-known bounds on the Shannon distinguishability. The notion of cryptographic exponential indistinguishability for quantum states is revisited. When exponentially fast convergence is required, all the metrics induced by unitarily invariant norms are shown to be equivalent.

Entropic uncertainty relations for extremal unravelings of super-operators

A way to pose the entropic uncertainty principle for trace-preserving super-operators is presented. It is based on the notion of extremal unraveling of a super-operator. For given input state, different effects of each unraveling result in some probability distribution at the output. As it is shown, all Tsallis' entropies of positive order as well as some of Renyi's entropies of this distribution are minimized by the same unraveling of a super-operator. Entropic relations between a state ensemble and the generated density matrix are revisited in terms of both the adopted measures. Using Riesz's theorem, we obtain two uncertainty relations for any pair of generalized resolutions of the identity in terms of the Renyi and Tsallis entropies. The inequality with Renyi's entropies is an improvement of the previous one, whereas the inequality with Tsallis' entropies is a new relation of a general form. The latter formulation is explicitly shown for a pair of complementary observables in a $d$-level system and for the angle and the angular momentum. The derived general relations are immediately applied to extremal unravelings of two super-operators.

No-cloning theorem for a single POVM

Cloning of statistics of general quantum measurement is discussed. The presented approach is connected with the known concept of observable cloning, but differs in some essential respects. The reasons are illustrated within some variety of B92 protocol. As it is shown, there exist pairs of states such that the perfect cloning of given POVM is not possible. We discuss some properties of these intolerant sets. An example allowing the perfect cloning is presented as well.

Optimal cloning with respect to the relative error

The relative error of cloning of quantum states with arbitrary prior probabilities is considered. It is assumed that the ancilla may contain some a priori information about the input state to be cloned. The lower bound on the relative error for general cloning scenario is derived. Both the case of two-state set and case of multi-state set are analyzed in details. The treated figure of merit is compared with other optimality criteria. The quantum circuit for optimal cloning of a pair of pure states is constructed.

Partitioned trace distances

New quantum distance is introduced as a half-sum of several singular values of difference between two density operators. This is, up to factor, the metric induced by so-called Ky Fan norm. The partitioned trace distances enjoy similar properties to the standard trace distance, including the unitary invariance, the strong convexity and the close relations to the classical distances. The partitioned distances cannot increase under quantum operations of certain kind including bistochastic maps. All the basic properties are re-formulated as majorization relations. Possible applications to quantum information processing are briefly discussed.

Some properties of partial fidelities

Basic properties of Uhlmann's partial fidelities are discussed. Statistical interpretation in terms of POVM measurements is established. Multiplicativity properties are considered. The relationship between partial fidelities and partitioned trace distances is derived. As it is shown, the partial fidelities cannot decrease under unistochastic quantum operations. Thus, the partial fidelities have good properties in the sense of their use as distinguishability measures.
