Review of opportunities at the HESR-Collider with PANDA at FAIR

Exciting new scientific opportunities are presented for the PANDA detector at the High Energy Storage Ring in the redefined $\overline{\text{p}} \text{p}(A)$ collider mode, HESR-C, at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Europe. The high luminosity, $L \sim 10^{31}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, and a wide range of intermediate and high energies, $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ up to 30 GeV for $\overline{\text{p}} \text{p}(A)$ collisions will allow to explore a wide range of exciting topics in QCD, including the study of the production of excited open charm and bottom states, nuclear bound states containing heavy (anti)quarks, the interplay of hard and soft physics in the dilepton production, probing short-range correlations in nuclei, and the exploration of the early, complete $\overline{\text{p}}$-p-annihilation phase, where an intially pure Yang-Mills gluon plasma is formed.

Test of the $X(3872)$ Structure in Antiproton-Nucleus Collisions

The present day experimental data on the $X(3872)$ decays do not allow to make clear conclusions on the dominating structure of this state. We discuss here an alternative way to study its structure by means of the two-step $\bar D^*$ (or $D$) production in $\bar p A$ reactions. If this process is mediated by $X(3872)$, the characteristic narrow peaks of the $\bar D^*$ (or $D$) distributions in the light cone momentum fraction at small transverse momenta will appear. This would unambiguously signal the $D \bar D^*$ + c.c. molecular composition of the $X(3872)$ state.

Charmonium production in $\bar p$-induced reactions on nuclei

The production of charmonia in the antiproton-nucleus reactions at $p_{\rm lab}=3-10$ GeV/c is studied within the Glauber model and the generalized eikonal approximation. The main reaction channel is charmonium formation in an antiproton-proton collision. The target mass dependence of the charmonium transparency ratio allows to determine the charmonium-nucleon cross section. The polarization effects in the production of $χ_{c2}$ states are evaluated.

PET monitoring of cancer therapy with He-3 and C-12 beams: a study with the GEANT4 toolkit

We study the spatial distributions of $β^+$-activity produced by therapeutic beams of $^3$He and $^{12}$C ions in various tissue-like materials. The calculations were performed within a Monte Carlo model for Heavy-Ion Therapy (MCHIT) based on the GEANT4 toolkit. The contributions from $^{10,11}$C, $^{13}$N, $^{14,15}$O, $^{17,18}$F and $^{30}$P positron-emitting nuclei were calculated and compared with experimental data obtained during and after irradiation. Positron emitting nuclei are created by $^{12}$C beam in fragmentation reactions of projectile and target nuclei. This leads to a $β^+$-activity profile characterised by a noticeable peak located close to the Bragg peak in the corresponding depth-dose distribution. On the contrary, as the most of positron-emitting nuclei are produced by $^3$He beam in target fragmentation reactions, the calculated total $β^+$-activity during or soon after the irradiation period is evenly distributed within the projectile range. However, we predict also the presence of $^{13}$N, $^{14}$O, $^{17,18}$F created in charge-transfer reactions by low-energy $^3$He ions close to the end of their range in several tissue-like media. The time evolution of $β^+$-activity profiles was investigated for both kinds of beams. Due to the production of $^{18}$F nuclide the $β^+$-activity profile measured 2 or 3 hours after irradiation with $^{3}$He ions will have a distinct peak correlated with the maximum of depth-dose distribution. We found certain advantages of low-energy $^{3}$He beams over low-energy proton beams for reliable PET monitoring during particle therapy of shallow located tumours. In this case the distal edge of $β^+$-activity distribution from $^{17}$F nuclei clearly marks the range of $^{3}$He in tissues.
