Necessary and sufficient stability condition for time-delay systems arising from Legendre approximation

Recently, sufficient conditions of stability or instability for time-delay systems have been proven to be necessary. In this way, a remarkable necessary and sufficient condition has then been developed by Gomez et al. It is presented as a simple test of positive definiteness of a matrix issued from the Lyapunov matrix. In this paper, an extension of this result is presented. Without going into details, the uniform discretization of the state has been replaced by projections on the first Legendre polynomials. Like Gomez et al., based on convergence arguments, the necessity is obtained in finite order, which can be calculated analytically. Compared to them, by relying on the fast convergence rate of Legendre approximation, the required order to ensure stability has been reduced. Thanks to this major modification, as shown in the example section, it is possible the find stable regions for low orders and unstable ones for even smaller orders.

On the necessity of sufficient LMI conditions for time-delay systems arising from Legendre approximation

This work is dedicated to the stability analysis of time-delay systems with a single constant delay using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem. This approach has been widely used in the literature and numerous sufficient conditions of stability have been proposed and expressed as linear matrix inequalities (LMI). The main criticism of the method that is often pointed out is that these LMI conditions are only sufficient, and there is a lack of information regarding the reduction of the conservatism. Recently, scalable methods have been investigated using Bessel-Legendre inequality or orthogonal polynomial-based inequalities. The interest of these methods relies on their hierarchical structure with a guarantee of reduction of the level of conservatism. However, the convergence is still an open question that will be answered for the first time in this paper. The objective is to prove that the stability of a time-delay system implies the feasibility of these scalable LMI, at a sufficiently large order of the Legendre polynomials. Moreover, the proposed contribution is even able to provide an analytic estimation of this order, giving rise to a necessary and sufficient LMI for the stability of time-delay systems.

Practical Stability Analysis of a Drilling Pipe under Friction with a PI-Controller

This paper deals with the exponential stability of a drilling pipe controlled by a PI controller. The model used leads to a coupled ODE / PDE and is consequently of infinite dimension. Using recent advances in time-delay systems, we derive a new Lyapunov functional based on an state extension made up of projections of the Riemann coordinates. Two cases will be considered. First, we will provide an exponential stability result expressed using the LMI framework. This result is dedicated to a linear version of the torsional dynamic. On a second hand, the nonlinear terms in the initial model, that generates the well-known stick-slip phenomenon is captured through a new stability theorem. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the method and that the stick-slip oscillations cannot be weaken using a PI controller.

On the necessity of looped-functionals arising in the analysis of pseudo-periodic, sampled-data and hybrid systems

Looped-functionals have been shown to be relevant for the analysis of a wide variety of systems. However, the conditions obtained in previous works on the analysis of sampled-data, impulsive and switched systems have only been shown to be sufficient for the characterization of their associated discrete-time stability conditions. We prove here that these conditions are also \necessary. This result is derived for a wider class of linear systems, referred to as impulsive pseudo-periodic systems, that encompass periodic, impulsive, sampled-data and switched systems as special cases.

Global Stability Analysis of Nonlinear Sampled-Data Systems using Convex Methods

We consider the problem of global stability of nonlinear sampled-data systems. Sampled-data systems are a form of hybrid model which arises when discrete measurements and updates are used to control continuous-time plants. In this paper, we use a recently introduced Lyapunov approach to derive stability conditions for both the case of fixed sampling period (synchronous) and the case of a time-varying sampling period (asynchronous). This approach requires the existence of a Lyapunov function which decreases over each sampling interval. To enforce this constraint, we use a form of slack variable which exists over the sampling period, may depend on the sampling period, and allows the Lyapunov function to be temporarily increasing. The resulting conditions are enforced using a new method of convex optimization of polynomial variables known as Sum-of-Squares.We use several numerical examples to illustrate this approach.

A looped-functional approach for robust stability analysis of linear impulsive systems

A new functional-based approach is developed for the stability analysis of linear impulsive systems. The new method, which introduces looped-functionals, considers non-monotonic Lyapunov functions and leads to LMIs conditions devoid of exponential terms. This allows one to easily formulate dwell-times results, for both certain and uncertain systems. It is also shown that this approach may be applied to a wider class of impulsive systems than existing methods. Some examples, notably on sampled-data systems, illustrate the efficiency of the approach.

Affine characterizations of minimum and mode-dependent dwell-times for uncertain linear switched systems

An alternative approach for minimum and mode-dependent dwell-time characterization for switched systems is derived. The proposed technique is related to Lyapunov looped-functionals, a new type of functionals leading to stability conditions affine in the system matrices, unlike standard results for minimum dwell-time. These conditions are expressed as infinite-dimensional LMIs which can be solved using recent polynomial optimization techniques such as sum-of-squares. The specific structure of the conditions is finally utilized in order to derive dwell-time stability results for uncertain switched systems. Several examples illustrate the efficiency of the approach.

Convex dwell-time characterizations for uncertain linear impulsive systems

New sufficient conditions for the characterization of dwell-times for linear impulsive systems are proposed and shown to coincide with continuous decrease conditions of a certain class of looped-functionals, a recently introduced type of functionals suitable for the analysis of hybrid systems. This approach allows to consider Lyapunov functions that evolve non-monotonically along the flow of the system in a new way, broadening then the admissible class of systems which may be analyzed. As a byproduct, the particular structure of the obtained conditions makes the method is easily extendable to uncertain systems by exploiting some convexity properties. Several examples illustrate the approach.
