The Steklov spectrum and coarse discretizations of manifolds with boundary

We consider the class of compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with cylindrical boundary, Ricci curvature bounded below by a given constant and injectivity radius bounded below by a positive constant, away from the boundary. For a manifold M of this class, we introduce a notion of discretization, leading to a graph with boundary which is roughly isometric to M, with constants depending only on the dimension and bounds on curvature and injectivity radius. In this context, we prove a uniform spectral comparison inequality between the Steklov eigenvalues of the manifold M and those of its discretization. Some applications to the construction of sequences of surfaces with boundary of fixed length and with arbitrarily large Steklov spectral gap are given. In particular, we obtain such a sequence for surfaces with connected boundary. The applications are based on the construction of graph-like surfaces which are obtained from sequences of graphs with good expansion properties.

Spectral geometry of the Steklov problem

The Steklov problem is an eigenvalue problem with the spectral parameter in the boundary conditions, which has various applications. Its spectrum coincides with that of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. Over the past years, there has been a growing interest in the Steklov problem from the viewpoint of spectral geometry. While this problem shares some common properties with its more familiar Dirichlet and Neumann cousins, its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions have a number of distinctive geometric features, which makes the subject especially appealing. In this survey we discuss some recent advances and open questions, particularly in the study of spectral asymptotics, spectral invariants, eigenvalue estimates, and nodal geometry.

Uniform stability of the Dirichlet spectrum for rough outer perturbations

The goal of this paper is to study the Dirichlet eigenvalues of bounded domains $Ω\subset Ω'$. With a local spectral stability requirement on $Ω$, we show that the difference of the Dirichlet eigenvalues of $Ω'$ and $Ω$ is explicitly controlled from above in terms of the first eigenvalue of $Ω'\setminus\barΩ$ and of geometric constants depending on the inner domain $Ω$. In particular, $Ω'$ can be an arbitrary bounded domain.

Fundamental tone, concentration of density to points and conformal degeneration on surfaces

We study the effect of two types of degeneration of the Riemannian metric on the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator on surfaces. In both cases we prove that the first eigenvalue of the round sphere is an optimal asymptotic upper bound. The first type of degeneration is concentration of the density to a point within a conformal class. The second is degeneration of the conformal class to the boundary of the moduli space on the torus and on the Klein bottle. In the latter, we follow the outline proposed by N. Nadirashvili in 1996.

Isoperimetric control of the Steklov spectrum

Let N be a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension n+1 whose Riemannian metric g is conformally equivalent to a metric with non-negative Ricci curvature. The normalized Steklov eigenvalues of a bounded domain in N are bounded above in terms of the isoperimetric ratio of the domain. Consequently, the normalized Steklov eigenvalues of a bounded domain in Euclidean space, hyperbolic space or a standard hemisphere are uniformly bounded above. On a compact surface with boundary, the normalized Steklov eigenvalues are uniformly bounded above in terms of the genus. We also obtain a relationship between the Steklov eigenvalues of a domain and the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on its bounding hypersurface.

Maximization of the second positive Neumann eigenvalue for planar domains

We prove that the second positive Neumann eigenvalue of a bounded simply-connected planar domain of a given area does not exceed the first positive Neumann eigenvalue on a disk of a twice smaller area. This estimate is sharp and attained by a sequence of domains degenerating to a union of two identical disks. In particular, this result implies the Polya conjecture for the second Neumann eigenvalue. The proof is based on a combination of analytic and topological arguments. As a by-product of our method we obtain an upper bound on the second eigenvalue for conformally round metrics on odd-dimensional spheres.

On the Hersch-Payne-Schiffer inequalities for Steklov eigenvalues

We prove that the isoperimetric inequality due to Hersch-Payne-Schiffer for the n-th nonzero Steklov eigenvalue of a bounded simply-connected planar domain is sharp for all n=1,2,... The equality is attained in the limit by a sequence of simply-connected domains degenerating to the disjoint union of n identical disks. We give a new proof of this inequality for n=2 and show that it is strict in this case. Related results are also obtained for the product of two consecutive Steklov eigenvalues.

Shape optimization for low Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues

We give an overview of results on shape optimization for low eigenvalues of the Laplacian on bounded planar domains with Neumann and Steklov boundary conditions. These results share a common feature: they are proved using methods of complex analysis. In particular, we present modernized proofs of the classical inequalities due to Szego and Weinstock for the first nonzero Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues. We also extend the inequality for the second nonzero Neumann eigenvalue, obtained recently by Nadirashvili and the authors, to non-homogeneous membranes with log-subharmonic densities. In the homogeneous case, we show that this inequality is strict, which implies that the maximum of the second nonzero Neumann eigenvalue is not attained in the class of simply-connected membranes of a given mass. The same is true for the second nonzero Steklov eigenvalue, as follows from our results on the Hersch-Payne-Schiffer inequalities.
