Continuing the discussion of the problem of electromagnetic properties of neutrinos, in this note we present additional information on this problem and focus on selected issues that have been developed recently, after the publication of our previous brief review on this topic [1].
Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).
The cross sections of elastic neutrino scattering on electrons and nuclei in the regime of low-energy transfer are known to be very sensitive to neutrino electromagnetic properties. In particular, the magnetic moment of the neutrino can be effectively searched using liquid or solid detectors with a very low energy threshold. We present the formalism that incorporates the neutrino magnetic moment contribution in the theoretical treatment of the low-energy elastic neutrino scattering on a condensed-matter target. The concept of the dynamic structure factor is employed to describe the collective effects in the target. The differential cross section for tritium antineutrino scattering on the superfluid $^4$He is calculated numerically. We find that the neutrino magnetic moment of the order of $10^{-11}μ_B$ strongly affects the cross section. Our results can be used in the search of neutrino magnetic moments in future low-energy neutrino scattering experiments with liquid or solid targets.
We derive for the first time an effective neutrino evolution Hamiltonian accounting for neutrino interactions with external magnetic field due to neutrino charge radii and anapole moment. The results are interesting for possible applications in astrophysics.
We consider neutrino evolution master equations in dense moving and polarized matter consisted of electrons, neutrons, protons and neutrinos. We also take into account the neutrino magnetic moment interaction with a magnetic field. We point out the mechanisms responsible for the neutrino spin precession and provide the expressions for the corresponding interaction Hamiltonians that should be taken into account in theoretical treatments of collective neutrino oscillations.
The electromagnetic properties of neutrinos have attracted considerable attention from researchers for many decades (see [1] for a review). However, until recently, there was no indication in favour of nonzero electromagnetic properties of neutrinos either from laboratory experiments with ground-based neutrino sources or from observations of astrophysical neutrino fluxes. The situation changed after the XENON collaboration reported [2] results of the search for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENON1T detector. The results show an excess of events over the known backgrounds in the recoil energy which, as one of the possible explanations, admit the presence of a sizable neutrino magnetic moment, the value of which is of the order of the existing laboratory limitations. In these short notes we give a brief introduction to neutrino electromagnetic properties and focus on the most important constraints on neutrino magnetic moments, charge radii and millicharges from the terrestrial experiments and astrophysical considerations. The promising new possibilities for constraining neutrino electromagnetic properties in future experiments are also discussed.
After a brief reminder on the electromagnetic properties of neutrinos, the main processes of the electromagnetic interactions of neutrinos in astrophysics and the corresponding limitations on millicharges and effective magnetic moments of the particle are discussed.
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a 20 kton LS detector at 700-m underground. An excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume offer exciting opportunities for addressing many important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With 6 years of data, the neutrino mass ordering can be determined at 3-4 sigma and three oscillation parameters can be measured to a precision of 0.6% or better by detecting reactor antineutrinos. With 10 years of data, DSNB could be observed at 3-sigma; a lower limit of the proton lifetime of 8.34e33 years (90% C.L.) can be set by searching for p->nu_bar K^+; detection of solar neutrinos would shed new light on the solar metallicity problem and examine the vacuum-matter transition region. A core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 IBD and ~2000 (300) all-flavor neutrino-proton (electron) scattering events. Geo-neutrinos can be detected with a rate of ~400 events/year. We also summarize the final design of the JUNO detector and the key R&D achievements. All 20-inch PMTs have been tested. The average photon detection efficiency is 28.9% for the 15,000 MCP PMTs and 28.1% for the 5,000 dynode PMTs, higher than the JUNO requirement of 27%. Together with the >20 m attenuation length of LS, we expect a yield of 1345 p.e. per MeV and an effective energy resolution of 3.02%/\sqrt{E (MeV)}$ in simulations. The underwater electronics is designed to have a loss rate <0.5% in 6 years. With degassing membranes and a micro-bubble system, the radon concentration in the 35-kton water pool could be lowered to <10 mBq/m^3. Acrylic panels of radiopurity <0.5 ppt U/Th are produced. The 20-kton LS will be purified onsite. Singles in the fiducial volume can be controlled to ~10 Hz. The JUNO experiment also features a double calorimeter system with 25,600 3-inch PMTs, a LS testing facility OSIRIS, and a near detector TAO.
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory~(JUNO) features a 20~kt multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator sphere as its main detector. Some of JUNO's features make it an excellent experiment for $^8$B solar neutrino measurements, such as its low-energy threshold, its high energy resolution compared to water Cherenkov detectors, and its much large target mass compared to previous liquid scintillator detectors. In this paper we present a comprehensive assessment of JUNO's potential for detecting $^8$B solar neutrinos via the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. A reduced 2~MeV threshold on the recoil electron energy is found to be achievable assuming the intrinsic radioactive background $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th in the liquid scintillator can be controlled to 10$^{-17}$~g/g. With ten years of data taking, about 60,000 signal and 30,000 background events are expected. This large sample will enable an examination of the distortion of the recoil electron spectrum that is dominated by the neutrino flavor transformation in the dense solar matter, which will shed new light on the tension between the measured electron spectra and the predictions of the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework. If $Δm^{2}_{21}=4.8\times10^{-5}~(7.5\times10^{-5})$~eV$^{2}$, JUNO can provide evidence of neutrino oscillation in the Earth at the about 3$σ$~(2$σ$) level by measuring the non-zero signal rate variation with respect to the solar zenith angle. Moveover, JUNO can simultaneously measure $Δm^2_{21}$ using $^8$B solar neutrinos to a precision of 20\% or better depending on the central value and to sub-percent precision using reactor antineutrinos. A comparison of these two measurements from the same detector will help elucidate the current tension between the value of $Δm^2_{21}$ reported by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment.
A new theoretical framework, based on the quantum field theory of open systems applied to neutrinos, has been developed to describe the neutrino evolution in external environments accounting for the effect of the neutrino quantum decoherence. The developed new approach enables one to obtain the explicit expressions of the decoherence and relaxation parameters that account for a particular process, in which the neutrino participates, and also for the characteristics of an external environment and of the neutrino itself, including the neutrino energy. We have used this approach to consider a new mechanism of the neutrino quantum decoherence engendered by the neutrino radiative decay to photons and dark photons in an astrophysical environment. The importance of the performed studies is highlighted by the prospects of the forthcoming new large volume neutrino detectors that will provide new frontier in high-statistics measurements of neutrino fluxes from supernovae.
After a brief history of two known types of neutrino mixing and oscillations, including neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations in the transversal magnetic field, we perform systematic study of a new phenomenon of neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations engendered by the transversal matter currents on the bases of the developed quantum treatment of the phenomenon. Possibilities for the resonance amplification of these new types of oscillations by the longitudinal matter currents and longitudinal magnetic fields are analyzed. We also consider modifications of the oscillation probabilities due to possible arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field vector ${\bf B}$ and the matter velocity ${\bf v}$.
The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.
A short overview of neutrino electromagnetic properties with focus on existed experimental constraints and future prospects is presented. The related new effect in neutrino flavour and spin-flavour oscillations in the transversal matter currents is introduced.

Neutrino interactions with an external environment can in influence the neutrino oscillation pattern and the oscillations can be damped as a result of the neutrino quantum decoherence. In particular, the quantum decoherence of neutrino states engendered by the neutrino radiative decay accounting for the nonstandard interactions (NSI) leads to the suppression of flavor neutrino oscillations in the solar neutrino fluxes.
During a period of about two decades we have realized a programme of systematic investigations of different aspects of neutrino propagation in extreme external environments and have predicted and studied several new phenomena that are engendered by the presence of external magnetic fields and dense matter. The starting point that underlies the research is the fact that the electromagnetic properties of neutrinos open a window to new physics \cite{Giunti:2014ixa,Studenikin:2008bd, Studenikin:2018vnp}. In these brief notes, we recall several new phenomena that have been proposed and investigated earlier. In particular, we discuss: 1) the spin light of neutrino in matter, 2) the neutrino energy quantization in rotating matter, and 3) neutrino start turning mechanism. Then we dwell on results of recent studies: 4) the effects of interplay of neutrino flavour and spin oscillations in a magnetic field, 5) the quantum theory of neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations engendered by the transversal mater currents, 6) the amplitude modulation of the flavour neutrino oscillation probability by the transversal matter current. As for references to the literature, only those papers are included in which a particular effect was proposed and considered for the first time and in a number of cases references are also be given to the most recent articles, which contain detailed references to the available literature on the issue.
After a short introduction to the history of neutrino mixing and oscillations, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first analytical expression for the neutrino evolution probability obtained by Gribov and Pontecorvo in 1969 by the discussion of two new phenomena in neutrino oscillations: 1) the emergence of the neutrino spin and spin-flavour oscillations engendered by the transversal in respect to neutrino propagation matter currents, and 2) an inherent interplay of neutrino oscillations on the vacuum $ω_{vac}=\frac{Δm^2}{4p}$ and magnetic $ω_{B}=μB_{\perp}$ frequencies in the case of neutrino propagation in a constance magnetics field. We also predict a new phenomena of the modification of the flavour neutrino oscillations probability in moving matter that can be engendered by a non-vanishing matter transversal current ${\bf j}_{\perp}=n {\bf v}_{\perp}$.
The neutrino oscillation patterns can be modified by neutrino interactions with external environments including electromagnetic fields that can influence on neutrinos in the case neutrinos have nonzero electromagnetic properties [1]. The phenomenon of neutrino oscillations can proceed only in the case of the coherent superposition of neutrino mass states. An external environment can modify a neutrino evolution in a way that conditions for the coherent superposition of neutrino mass states are violated. Such a violation is called quantum decoherence of neutrino states and leads to the suppression of flavor neutrino oscillations [2, 3]. Note that neutrino decoherence appeared due to the wave separation of different mass states is usually not related to quantum neutrino decoherence, the effect that is not considered below. We consider the neutrino quantum decoherence due to neutrino radiative decay in the presence of an electron medium and radiation field. The corresponding damping of neutrino oscillations is calculated.
We propose a modified Dirac equation for a massive neutrino moving in the presence of the background matter. The effects of the charged and neutral-current interactions with the matter as well as the matter motion and polarization are accounted for. In the particular case of the matter with a constant density the exact solutions of this equation are found, the neutrino energy spectrum in the matter is also determined. On this basis the effects of the neutrino trapping and reflection, the neutrino-antineutrino pair annihilation and creation in a medium are studied. The quantum theory of the spin light of neutrino in matter ($SLν$) is also developed.
