Hybrid thermalization in the large $N$ limit

Semi-holography provides a formulation of dynamics in gauge theories involving both weakly self-interacting (perturbative) and strongly self-interacting (non-perturbative) degrees of freedom. These two subsectors interact via their effective metrics and sources, while the full local energy-momentum tensor is conserved in the physical background metric. In the large $N$ limit, the subsectors have their individual entropy currents, and so the full system can reach a pseudo-equilibrium state in which each subsector has a different physical temperature. We first complete the proof that the global thermal equilibrium state, where both subsectors have the \textit{same} physical temperature, can be defined in consistency with the principles of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Particularly, we show that the global equilibrium state is the unique state with maximum entropy in the microcanonical ensemble. Furthermore, we show that in the large $N$ limit, a \textit{typical} non-equilibrium state of the full isolated system relaxes to the global equilibrium state when the average energy density is large compared to the scale set by the inter-system coupling. We discuss quantum statistical perspectives.

Colliding poles with colliding nuclei

In these proceedings, I will discuss collisions of poles in the complex plane as a signature of phase transitions for theories relevant to the quark gluon plasma. I will begin with an illustrative example, namely the chiral phase transition, which can be characterized by colliding poles as a function of temperature. Then, recognizing the interplay between weak and strong coupling sectors in a typical collision, I will introduce a hybrid model with a weakly broken symmetry, which has a rich quasi-hydrodynamic phenomenological description where hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic poles are unified by a common dispersion relation. I will show that energy is transferred initially from the soft to the hard sector before irreversibly transferring back to the soft sector at late times, and that the model reproduces many features common to dissipative systems with a weakly broken symmetry including the k-gap.

Dynamics of the $O(4)$ critical point in QCD

We perform a real-time simulation of the $O(4)$ critical point of QCD, which lies in the dynamic universality class of Model G. The axial charge and the order parameter $ϕ_a =(σ, \vecπ)$ exhibit a rich dynamical interplay, which reflects the qualitative differences in the hydrodynamic effective theories above and below $T_c$. From the axial charge correlators on the critical line we extract a dynamical critical exponent of $ζ=1.47 \pm 0.01 ({\rm stat})$, which is compatible with the theoretical expectation of $ζ= d/2$ (with $d=3$) when systematic errors are taken into account. At low temperatures, we quantitatively match the $O(4)$ simulations to the superfluid effective theory of soft pions.

Transport near the chiral critical point

The evolution of a heavy ion collision passes close to the O(4) critical point of QCD, where fluctuations of the order parameter are expected to be enhanced. Using the appropriate stochastic hydrodynamic equations in mean field near the the pseudo-critical point, we compute how these enhanced fluctuations modify the transport coefficients of QCD. Finally, we estimate the expected critical enhancement of soft pion yields, which provides a plausible explanation for the excess seen in experiment relative to ordinary hydrodynamic computations.

Hydrodynamic attractor of a hybrid viscous fluid in Bjorken flow

The nonequilibrium evolution in a boost-invariant Bjorken flow of a hybrid viscous fluid model containing two interacting components with different viscosities, such that they represent strongly and weakly self-coupled sectors, is shown to be characterized by a hydrodynamic attractor which has an early-time behavior that is reminiscent of the so-called bottom-up thermalization scenario in heavy-ion collisions. The hydrodynamization times for the two sectors can differ strongly, with details depending on the curve realized on the two-dimensional attractor surface, which might account for different scenarios for small and large systems in nuclear collisions. The total system behaves like a single viscous fluid with a dynamically determined effective shear viscosity.

Transport and hydrodynamics in the chiral limit

We analyze the evolution of hydrodynamic fluctuations for QCD matter below $T_c$ in the chiral limit, where the pions (the Goldstone modes) must be treated as additional non-abelian superfluid degrees of freedom, reflecting the broken $SU_L(2) \times SU_R(2)$ symmetry of the theory. In the presence of a finite pion mass $m_π$, the hydrodynamic theory is ordinary hydrodynamics at long distances, and superfluid-like at short distances. The presence of the superfluid degrees of freedom then gives specific contributions to the bulk viscosity, the shear viscosity, and diffusion coefficients of the ordinary theory at long distances which we compute. This determines, in some cases, the leading dependence of the transport parameters of QCD on the pion mass. We analyze the predictions of this computation, as the system approaches the $O(4)$ critical point.

Time-dependent $NAdS_2$ holography with applications

We develop a method for obtaining exact time-dependent solutions in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to non-conformal matter and study consequences for $NAdS_2$ holography. We study holographic quenches in which we find that the black hole mass increases. A semi-holographic model composed of an infrared $NAdS_2$ holographic sector representing the mutual strong interactions of trapped impurities confined at a spatial point is proposed. The holographic sector couples to the position of a displaced impurity acting as a self-consistent boundary source. This effective $0+1-$dimensional description has a total conserved energy. Irrespective of the initial velocity of the particle, the black hole mass initially increases, but after the horizon runs away to infinity in the physical patch, the mass vanishes in the long run. The total energy is completely transferred to the kinetic energy or the self-consistent confining potential energy of the impurity. For initial velocities below a critical value determined by the mutual coupling, the black hole mass changes sign in finite time. Above this critical velocity, the initial condition of the particle can be retrieved from the $SL(2,R)$ invariant exponent that governs the exponential growth of the bulk gravitational $SL(2,R)$ charges at late time.

Time-dependent neo-deterministic seismic hazard scenarios: Preliminary report on the M6.2 Central Italy earthquake, 24th August 2016

A scenario-based Neo-Deterministic approach to Seismic Hazard Assessment (NDSHA) is available nowadays, which permits considering a wide range of possible seismic sources as the starting point for deriving scenarios by means of full waveforms modeling. The method does not make use of attenuation relations and naturally supplies realistic time series of ground shaking, including reliable estimates of ground displacement, readily applicable to complete engineering analysis. Based on the neo-deterministic approach, an operational integrated procedure for seismic hazard assessment has been developed that allows for the definition of time dependent scenarios of ground shaking, through the routine updating of earthquake predictions, performed by means of the algorithms CN and M8S. The integrated NDSHA procedure for seismic input definition, which is currently applied to the Italian territory, combines different pattern recognition techniques, designed for the space-time identification of strong earthquakes, with algorithms for the realistic modeling of ground motion. Accordingly, a set of deterministic scenarios of ground motion at bedrock, which refers to the time interval when a strong event is likely to occur within the alerted area, is defined both at regional and local scale. CN and M8S predictions, as well as the related time-dependent ground motion scenarios associated with the alarmed areas, are routinely updated since 2006. The prospective application of the time-dependent NDSHA approach provides information that can be useful in assigning priorities for timely mitigation actions and, at the same time, allows for a rigorous validation of the proposed methodology. The results from real-time testing of the time-dependent NDSHA scenarios are illustrated with specific reference to the August 24th, 2016 Central Italy earthquake.

The contribution of pattern recognition of seismic and morphostructural data to seismic hazard assessment

The reliable statistical characterization of the spatial and temporal properties of large earthquakes occurrence is one of the most debated issues in seismic hazard assessment, due to the unavoidably limited observations from past events. We show that pattern recognition techniques, which are designed in a formal and testable way, may provide significant space-time constraints about impending strong earthquakes. This information, when combined with physically sound methods for ground shaking computation, like the neo-deterministic approach (NDSHA), may produce effectively preventive seismic hazard maps. Pattern recognition analysis of morphostructural data provide quantitative and systematic criteria for identifying the areas prone to the largest events, taking into account a wide set of possible geophysical and geological data, whilst the formal identification of precursory seismicity patterns (by means of CN and M8S algorithms), duly validated by prospective testing, provides useful constraints about impending strong earthquakes at the intermediate space-time scale. According to a multi-scale approach, the information about the areas where a strong earthquake is likely to occur can be effectively integrated with different observations (e.g. geodetic and satellite data), including regional scale modeling of the stress field variations and of the seismic ground shaking, so as to identify a set of priority areas for detailed investigations of short-term precursors at local scale and for microzonation studies. Results from the pattern recognition of earthquake prone areas (M>=5.0) in the Po plain (Northern Italy), as well as from prospective testing and validation of the time-dependent NDSHA scenarios are presented.
