The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

A first next-to-next-to-leading order study of three-jet production at the LHC

Multi-jet rates at hadron colliders provide a unique possibility for probing Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions. By comparing theory predictions with collider data, one can directly test perturbative QCD, extract fundamental parameters like the strong coupling $α_s$ and search for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work we calculate, for the first time, the next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) QCD corrections to typical three-jet observables and to differential three-to-two jet ratios. We demonstrate that the inclusion of the NNLO corrections significantly reduces the dependence of those observables on the factorization and renormalization scales. Besides its phenomenological value, this proof-of-principle computation represents a milestone in perturbative QCD.

NNLO QCD corrections to leptonic observables in top-quark pair production and decay

We calculate a comprehensive set of spin correlations and differential distributions in top-quark pair production and decay to dilepton final states. This is the first time such a complete study is performed at next-to-next-to leading order in QCD. Both inclusive and fiducial distributions are presented and analyzed. Good agreement between NNLO QCD predictions and data is found. We demonstrate that it is possible to perform high-precision comparisons of fixed-order calculations with fiducial-level data. Subtleties of the top quark definition are raised and clarified. Some of those are found to have a very significant impact on top-quark pair production at absolute threshold.

NNLO QCD corrections to three-photon production at the LHC

We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to three-photon production at the LHC. This is the first NNLO QCD calculation for a $2\to 3$ process. Our calculation is exact, except for the scale-independent part of the two-loop finite remainder which is included in the leading color approximation. We estimate the size of the missing two-loop corrections and find them to be phenomenologically negligible. We compare our predictions with available 8 TeV measurement from the ATLAS collaboration. We find that the inclusion of the NNLO corrections eliminates the existing significant discrepancy with respect to NLO QCD predictions, paving the way for precision phenomenology in this process.

Single-jet inclusive rates with exact color at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4)$

Next-to-next-to-leading order QCD predictions for single-, double- and even triple-differential distributions of jet events in proton-proton collisions have recently been obtained using the NNLOjet framework based on antenna subtraction. These results are an important input for Parton Distribution Function fits to hadron-collider data. While these calculations include all of the partonic channels occurring at this order of the perturbative expansion, they are based on the leading-color approximation in the case of channels involving quarks and are only exact in color in the pure-gluon channel. In the present publication, we verify that the sub-leading color effects in the single-jet inclusive double-differential cross sections are indeed negligible as far as phenomenological applications are concerned. This is the first independent and complete calculation for this observable. We also take the opportunity to discuss the necessary modifications of the sector-improved residue subtraction scheme that made this work possible.

Top-quark pair production at complete-NLO accuracy with NNLO+NNLL$'$ corrections in QCD

We describe predictions for top-quark pair differential distributions at hadron colliders, which combine state-of-the-art NNLO QCD calculations and NLO electroweak corrections together with double resummation at NNLL$'$ accuracy of threshold logarithms and small-mass logarithms. This is the first time that such a combination has appeared in the literature. Numerical results are presented for the invariant-mass distribution, the transverse-momentum distribution as well as rapidity distributions.

High-precision differential predictions for top-quark pairs at the LHC

We present the first complete next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions for differential distributions in the top-quark pair production process at the LHC. Our results are derived from a fully differential partonic Monte Carlo calculation with stable top quarks which involves no approximations beyond the fixed-order truncation of the perturbation series. The NNLO corrections improve the agreement between existing LHC measurements [V. Khachatryan et al. (CMS Collaboration), Eur. Phys. J. C 75, 542 (2015)] and standard model predictions for the top-quark transverse momentum distribution, thus helping alleviate one long-standing discrepancy. The shape of the top-quark pair invariant mass distribution turns out to be stable with respect to radiative corrections beyond NLO which increases the value of this observable as a place to search for physics beyond the standard model. The results presented here provide essential input for parton distribution function fits, implementation of higher-order effects in Monte Carlo generators as well as top-quark mass and strong coupling determination.

NNLO QCD predictions for fully-differential top-quark pair production at the Tevatron

We present a comprehensive study of differential distributions for Tevatron top-pair events at the level of stable top quarks. All calculations are performed in NNLO QCD with the help of a fully differential partonic Monte-Carlo and are exact at this order in perturbation theory. We present predictions for all kinematic distributions for which data exists. Particular attention is paid on the top-quark forward-backward asymmetry which we study in detail. We compare the NNLO results with existing approximate NNLO predictions as well as differential distributions computed with different parton distribution sets. Theory errors are significantly smaller than current experimental ones with overall agreement between theory and data.

Resolving the Tevatron Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry Puzzle: Fully Differential Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order Calculation

We determine the dominant missing Standard Model (SM) contribution to the top quark pair forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. Contrary to past expectations, we find a large, around 27%, shift relative to the well-known value of the inclusive asymmetry in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD. Combining all known Standard Model corrections, we find that AFB^{SM} = 0.095 +- 0.007. This value is in agreement with the latest D0 measurement [V. M. Abazov et al. (D0 Collaboration), Phys. Rev. D 90, 072011 (2014)] AFB^{D0} = 0.106+- 0.03 and about 1.5 sigma below that of CDF [T. Aaltonen et al. (CDF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. D 87, 092002 (2013)] AFB^{CDF} =0.164 +- 0.047. Our result is derived from a fully differential calculation of the next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to inclusive top pair production at hadron colliders and includes - without any approximation - all partonic channels contributing to this process. This is the first complete fully differential calculation in NNLO QCD of a two-to-two scattering process with all coloured partons.

Summary of the Topical Workshop on Top Quark Differential Distributions 2014

We summarise the Topical Workshop on Top Quark Differential Distributions 2014, which took place in Cannes immediately before the annual Top2014 conference. The workshop was motivated by the availability of top quark differential distributions at NNLO and the forthcoming LHC 13 TeV data. The main goal of the workshop was to explore the impact of improved calculations of top quark production on precision LHC measurements, PDF determinations and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, as well as finding ways in which the high precision data from ATLAS, CMS and LHCb can be used to further refine theoretical predictions for top production.

Closing the stop gap

Light stops are a hallmark of the most natural realizations of weak-scale supersymmetry. While stops have been extensively searched for, there remain open gaps around and below the top mass, due to similarities of stop and top signals with current statistics. We propose a new fast-track avenue to improve light stop searches for R-parity conserving supersymmetry, by comparing top cross section measurements to the theoretical prediction. Stop masses below ~ 180 GeV can now be ruled out for a light neutralino. The possibility of a stop signal contaminating the top mass measurement is also briefly addressed.

Determination of the top quark mass from leptonic observables

We present a procedure for the determination of the mass of the top quark at the LHC based on leptonic observables in dilepton $t\bar{t}$ events. Our approach utilises the shapes of kinematic distributions through their few lowest Mellin moments; it is notable for its minimal sensitivity to the modelling of long-distance effects, for not requiring the reconstruction of top quarks, and for having a competitive precision, with theory errors on the extracted top mass of the order of 0.8 GeV. A novel aspect of our work is the study of theoretical biases that might influence in a dramatic way the determination of the top mass, and which are potentially relevant to all template-based methods. We propose a comprehensive strategy that helps minimise the impact of such biases, and leads to a reliable top mass extraction at hadron colliders.

QCD Corrections to Semi-Inclusive Hadron Production in Electron-Positron Annihilation at Two Loops

We report on the analytic calculation of the second-order QCD corrections to semi-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation. The calculation of the single-particle inclusive cross-section in time-like kinematics is performed in Mellin N-space and uses an algorithmic evaluation of inclusive phase-space integrals, based on the unitarity cutting rules and integration-by-parts. We obtain splitting functions and coefficient functions up to second order in the strong coupling alpha_s. Our results are in agreement with earlier calculations in the literature by Rijken and van Neerven.

Constraints on the gluon PDF from top quark pair production at hadron colliders

Using the recently derived NNLO cross sections \cite{Czakon:2013goa}, we provide NNLO+NNLL theoretical predictions for top quark pair production based on all the available NNLO PDF sets, and compare them with the most precise LHC and Tevatron data. In this comparison we study in detail the PDF uncertainty and the scale, $m_t$ and $α_s$ dependence of the theoretical predictions for each PDF set. Next, we observe that top quark pair production provides a powerful direct constraint on the gluon PDF at large $x$, and include Tevatron and LHC top pair data consistently into a global NNLO PDF fit. We then explore the phenomenological consequences of the reduced gluon PDF uncertainties, by showing how they can improve predictions for Beyond the Standard Model processes at the LHC. Finally, we update to full NNLO+NNLL the theoretical predictions for the ratio of top quark cross sections between different LHC center of mass energies, as well as the cross sections for hypothetical heavy fourth-generation quark production at the LHC.

Determination of the top quark mass circa 2013: methods, subtleties, perspectives

We present an up-to-date overview of the problem of top quark mass determination. We assess the need for precision in the top mass extraction in the LHC era together with the main theoretical and experimental issues arising in precision top mass determination. We collect and document existing results on top mass determination at hadron colliders and map the prospects for future precision top mass determination at e+e- colliders. We present a collection of estimates for the ultimate precision of various methods for top quark mass extraction at the LHC.

Further exploration of top pair hadroproduction at NNLO

Top quark pair production is one of the cornerstones of the physics program at hadron colliders. In this contribution, we further explore the phenomenological implications of the recent NNLO calculation of the total inclusive cross-section. We provide a comparison of the scale dependence of the top pair hadroproduction cross section at different perturbative orders and study its perturbative convergence (with and without soft-gluon resummation). We also sketch how the NNLO top quark cross-section could be used to improve searches of physics beyond the Standard Model.

This writeup reviews recent theoretical developments in the following areas of top quark physics at hadron colliders: (a) the forward-backward asymmetry anomaly at the Tevatron, (b) precision top mass determination, (c) state of the art NLO calculations and (d) progress in NNLO calculations.

The total top quark pair production cross-section at hadron colliders through O(alpha_S^4)

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD correction to the total cross-section for the reaction gg \to t\bar t + X. Together with the partonic channels we computed previously, the result derived in this letter completes the set of NNLO QCD corrections to the total top pair production cross-section at hadron colliders. Supplementing the fixed order results with soft-gluon resummation with next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy we estimate that the theoretical uncertainty of this observable due to unknown higher order corrections is about 3% at the LHC and 2.2% at the Tevatron. We observe a good agreement between the Standard Model predictions and the available experimental measurements. The very high theoretical precision of this observable allows a new level of scrutiny in parton distribution functions and new physics searches.

Top++: a program for the calculation of the top-pair cross-section at hadron colliders

We present the program Top++ for the numerical evaluation of the total inclusive cross-section for producing top quark pairs at hadron colliders. The program calculates the cross-section in a) fixed order approach with exact next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) accuracy and b) by including soft-gluon resummation for the hadronic cross-section in Mellin space with full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. The program offers the user significant flexibility through the large number (29) of available options. Top++ is written in C++. It has a very simple to use interface that is intuitive and directly reflects the physics. The running of the program requires no programing experience from the user.

Final state interactions in single- and multi-particle inclusive cross sections for hadronic collisions

We study the role of low momentum transfer (soft) interactions between high-transverse momentum heavy particles and beam remnants (spectators) in hadronic collisions. Such final-state interactions are power suppressed for single-particle inclusive cross sections whenever that particle is accompanied by a recoiling high-p_T partner whose momentum is not fixed. An example is the single-top inclusive cross section in top pair production. Final-state soft interactions in multi-particle inclusive cross sections, including transverse momentum distributions, however, produce leading power corrections in the absence of hard recoiling radiation. Nonperturbative corrections due to scattering from spectators are generically suppressed by powers of Λ/p'_T, where Λis a hadronic scale, and p'_T is the largest transverse momentum of radiation recoiling against the particles whose momenta are observed.

NNLO corrections to top pair production at hadron colliders: the quark-gluon reaction

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD correction to the total inclusive top pair production cross-section in the reaction qg \to t\bar t + X. We find moderate O(1%) correction to central values at both Tevatron and LHC. The scale variation of the cross-section remains unchanged at the Tevatron and is significantly reduced at the LHC. We find that recently introduced approximation based on the high-energy limit of the top pair cross-section significantly deviates from the exact result. The results derived in the present work are included in version 1.4 of the program Top++. Work towards computing the reaction gg\to t\bar t+X is ongoing.

NNLO corrections to top-pair production at hadron colliders: the all-fermionic scattering channels

This is a second paper in our ongoing calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD correction to the total inclusive top-pair production cross-section at hadron colliders. In this paper we calculate the reaction $q\bar q \to t\bar t + q\bar q$ which was not considered in our previous work on $q\bar q \to t\bar t +X$ due to its phenomenologically negligible size. We also calculate all remaining fermion-pair-initiated partonic channels $qq', q\bar q'$ and $qq$ that contribute to top-pair production starting from NNLO. The contributions of these reactions to the total cross-section for top-pair production at the Tevatron and LHC are small, at the permil level. The most interesting feature of these reactions is their characteristic logarithmic rise in the high energy limit. We compute the constant term in the leading power behavior in this limit, and achieve precision that is an order of magnitude better than the precision of a recent theoretical prediction for this constant. All four partonic reactions computed in this paper are included in our numerical program Top++. The calculation of the NNLO corrections to the two remaining partonic reactions, $qg\to t\bar t+X$ and $gg\to t\bar t+X$, is ongoing.

Percent level precision physics at the Tevatron: first genuine NNLO QCD corrections to q qbar -> t tbar + X

We compute the Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the partonic reaction that dominates top-pair production at the Tevatron. This is the first ever NNLO calculation of an observable with more than two colored partons, and/or massive fermions, at hadron colliders. Augmenting our fixed order calculation with soft-gluon resummation through Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, we observe that the predicted total inclusive cross-section exhibits a very small perturbative uncertainty, estimated at +-2.7%. We expect that once all sub-dominant partonic reactions are accounted for, and work in this direction is ongoing, the perturbative theoretical uncertainty for this observable could drop below +-2%. Our calculation demonstrates the power of our computational approach and proves it can be successfully applied to all processes at hadron colliders for which high-precision analyses are needed.

Top-pair production at hadron colliders with next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic soft-gluon resummation

Incorporating all recent theoretical advances, we resum soft-gluon corrections to the total $t\bar t$ cross-section at hadron colliders at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) order. We perform the resummation in the well established framework of Mellin $N$-space resummation. We exhaustively study the sources of systematic uncertainty like renormalization and factorization scale variation, power suppressed effects and missing two- and higher-loop corrections. The inclusion of soft-gluon resummation at NNLL brings only a minor decrease in the perturbative uncertainty with respect to the NLL approximation, and a small shift in the central value, consistent with the quoted uncertainties. These numerical predictions agree with the currently available measurements from the Tevatron and LHC and have uncertainty of similar size. We conclude that significant improvements in the $t\bar t$ cross-sections can potentially be expected only upon inclusion of the complete NNLO corrections.

The like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry at the Tevatron: corrections from B meson fragmentation

The existing predictions for the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry at the Tevatron are expressed in terms of parameters related to B mesons' mixing and inclusive production fractions. We show that in the realistic case when phase-space cuts are applied, the asymmetry depends also on the details of the production mechanism for the B mesons. In particular, it is sensitive to the difference in the fragmentation functions of B^0_d and B^0_s mesons. We estimate these fragmentation effects and find that they shift the theory prediction for this observable by approximately 10%. We also point out the approximately 20% sensitivity of the asymmetry depending on which set of values for the B meson production fractions is used: as measured at the Z pole or at the Tevatron. The impact of these effects on the extraction of A^s_{SL} from the DØmeasurement is presented.

The singular behavior of one-loop massive QCD amplitudes with one external soft gluon

We calculate the one-loop correction to the soft-gluon current with massive fermions. This current is process independent and controls the singular behavior of one-loop massive QCD amplitudes in the limit when one external gluon becomes soft. The result derived in this work is the last missing process-independent ingredient needed for numerical evaluation of observables with massive fermions at hadron colliders at the next-to-next-to-leading order.

Computation of the Soft Anomalous Dimension Matrix in Coordinate Space

We complete the coordinate space calculation of the three-parton correlation in the two-loop massive soft anomalous dimension matrix. The full answer agrees with the result found previously by a different approach. The coordinate space treatment of renormalized two-loop gluon exchange diagrams exhibits their color symmetries in a transparent fashion. We compare coordinate space calculations of the soft anomalous dimension matrix with massive and massless eikonal lines and examine its nonuniform limit at absolute threshold.

Diagrammatic Exponentiation for Products of Wilson Lines

We provide a recursive diagrammatic prescription for the exponentiation of gauge theory amplitudes involving products of Wilson lines and loops. This construction generalizes the concept of webs, originally developed for eikonal form factors and cross sections with two eikonal lines, to general soft functions in QCD and related gauge theories. Our coordinate space arguments apply to arbitrary paths for the lines.

Perturbative Heavy Quark Fragmentation Function through O(alpha_s^2)

We derive the initial condition for the perturbative fragmentation function of a heavy quark through order O(alpha_s^2) in the MS-bar scheme. This initial condition is useful for computing heavy quark (or lepton, in case of QED) energy distributions from calculations with massless partons. In addition, the initial condition at O(alpha_s^2) can be used to resum collinear logarithms ln(Q^2/m^2) in heavy quark energy spectrum with next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy by solving the DGLAP equation.

Perturbative Heavy Quark Fragmentation Function through O(α_s^2): Gluon Initiated Contribution

We derive the gluon initiated contribution to the initial condition for the perturbative fragmentation function of a heavy quark through order O(α_s^2) in the MS-bar scheme. This result is needed for the resummation with next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy of quasi-collinear logarithms ln^k(m^2) in heavy quark differential distributions by solving the complete DGLAP equation. Together with the previously evaluated fermion initiated components, this result completes the derivation of the initial condition for the perturbative fragmentation function at next-to-next-to-leading order.

The photon energy spectrum in B-> X_s + γin perturbative QCD through O(α_s^2)

We derive the dominant part of the O(α_s^2) correction to the photon energy spectrum in the inclusive decay B-> X_s+gamma. The detailed knowledge of the spectrum is important for relating the theoretical calculations of the B-> X_s + γdecay rate and the experimental measurements where a cut on the photon energy is applied. In addition, moments of the photon energy spectrum are used for the determination of the b-quark mass and other fundamental parameters of heavy quark physics. Our calculation reduces the theoretical uncertainty associated with uncalculated higher orders effects and shows that, for B-> X_s+γ, QCD radiative corrections to the photon energy spectrum are under theoretical control.
