Dissociation of one-dimensional excitons by static electric field

The quantum states of an electron-hole pair in one-dimensional semiconductors under a static electric field are theoretically analyzed using a two-band model with on-site Coulomb interaction. In the absence of static field, the electron and hole are always bound, forming an exciton regardless of the Coulomb interaction strength, in contrast to what occurs in higher-dimensional semiconductors. The static field modifies the wave function of the electron-hole pair, turning bound states into continuum states. However, at low static fields, the linear optical spectra resemble those of the unbiased semiconductor, exhibiting a quadratic redshift of the main exciton absorption line as the field increases. When the static field exceeds a critical threshold, the exciton dissociates and the linear optical spectra exhibit signatures of the Wannier-Stark ladder with squally spaced peaks, making them a valuable tool for experimentally probing exciton dissociation.

Emergence of Floquet edge states in the coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

The emergence of non equilibrium topological phases in low dimensional systems offers an interesting route for material properties engineering. We analyze the dynamical modulation of two coupled one-dimensional chains, described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We find that the interplay of driving interactions and interchain coupling leads to the emergence of non-equilibrium edge states with nontrivial topological properties. Using an effective Hamiltonian approach, we quantify the emergent topological phases via the winding number and show that oscillations in the mean pseudospin polarization arise as a consequence of the periodic modulation. The patterns of these pseudospin oscillations are different for the static trivial and topological phases offering a dynamical means to distinguish both physical configurations. The system also exhibits non integer values of the winding number, which have been recently reported experimentally in connection to spin textures.

Photoinduced polarization enhancement in biased bilayer graphene in the Landau level regime

We investigate the charge carrier dynamics in bilayer graphene subject to monochromatic laser irradiation within the Landau level quantization regime. Even though the radiation field does not lift the energy degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LLs), it nevertheless has a strong effect on the photoinduced pseudospin polarization response for higher LLs ($n\ge2$). Our results show that the photoinduced bandgaps lead to a finite response of the averaged pseudospin polarization with nontrivial oscillating behavior. It is shown that the contribution from these higher LL transitions turns out to be crucial to achieve an enhanced photoinduced polarization in radiated bilayer graphene. The experimental feasibility of our findings is also discussed.

Gauge transformations of Spin-Orbit interactions in graphene

Inclusion of spin-dependent interactions in graphene in the vicinity of the Dirac points can be posed in terms of non-Abelian gauge potentials. Such gauge potentials being surrogates of physical electric fields and material parameters, only enjoy a limited gauge freedom. A general gauge transformation thus in general changes the physical model. We argue that this property can be useful in connecting reference physical situations, such as free particle or Rashba interactions to non-trivial physical Hamiltonians with a new set of spin-orbit interactions, albeit constrained to being isoenergetic. We analyse different combinations of spin-orbit interactions in the case of monolayer graphene and show how they are related by means of selected non-Abelian gauge transformations.

Photoinduced pseudospin effects in silicene beyond the off resonant condition

We study the photoinduced manipulation of charge carriers in monolayer silicene subject to intense electromagnetic terahertz radiation. Considering the Dirac cone approximation and going beyond the off resonant condition for large frequencies of the radiation field, where only virtual photon processes are allowed, we present the exact zero-momentum pseudospin polarization and numerical results for the quasienergy band structure and time-averaged density of states. We find that resonant processes, due to real photon emission and absorbtion processes, induce a band inversion that qualitatively modifies the quasienergy spectrum. These band structure changes manifest themselves as an inversion of the averaged pseudospin polarization. Through the analysis of the time-averaged density of states we find that effective photoinduced gap manipulation can only be achieved in the intermediate and strong matter-radiation coupling regime where the off resonant approximation breaks down.

Interplay between spin-orbit interactions and a time-dependent electromagnetic field in monolayer graphene

We apply a circularly and linearly polarized terahertz field on a monolayer of graphene taking into account spin-orbit interactions of the intrinsic and Rashba type. It turns out that the field can not only be used to induce a gap in the energy spectrum, but also to close an existing gap due to the different reaction of the spin components on circularly polarized light. Signatures of spin-orbit coupling on the density of states of the driven system can be observed even for energies where the static density of states is independent of spin-orbit interactions. Furthermore it is shown that the time evolution of the spin polarization and the orbital dynamics of an initial wave packet can be modulated by varying the ratio of the spin-orbit coupling parameters. Assuming that the system acquires a quasi stationary state, the optical conductivity of the irradiated sample is calculated. Our results confirm the multi step nature of the conductivity obtained recently, where the number of intermediate steps can be changed by adjusting the spin-orbit coupling parameters and the orientation of the field.

Spin superfluidity and spin-orbit gauge symmetry fixing

The Hamiltonian describing 2D electron gas, in a spin-orbit active medium, can be cast into a consistent non-Abelian gauge field theory leading to a proper definition of the spin current. The generally advocated gauge symmetric version of the theory results in current densities that are gauge covariant, a fact that poses severe concerns on their physical nature. We show that in fact the problem demands gauge fixing, leaving no room to ambiguity in the definition of physical spin currents. Gauge fixing also allows for polarized edge excitations not present in the gauge symmetric case. The scenario here is analogous to that of superconductivity gauge theory. We develop a variational formulation that accounts for the constraints between U(1) physical fields and SU(2) gauge fields and show that gauge fixing renders a physical matter and radiation currents and derive the particular consequences for the Rashba SO interaction.

Mach-Zehnder Interferometric device for spin filtering in a GaAs/AlGaAs electron gas

A spin filtering device using quantum spin interference is theoretically proposed in a GaAs/AlGaAs electron gas that has both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. The device achieves polarized electron currents by separating spin up and spin down components without a magnetic field gradient. We find two broad spin filtering regimes, one where the interferometer has symmetrical arms, where a small magnetic flux is needed to achieve spin separation, and the other with asymmetric arms where the change in path length renders an extra phase emulating the effects of a magnetic field. We identify operating points for the device where optimal electron polarization is achieved within value ranges found in a 2D electron gas. Both device setups apply for arbitrary incoming electron polarization and operate at broad energy ranges within the incoming electron band.

Perfect spin filtering device through a Mach Zehnder interferometer in GaAs/AlGaAs electron gas

Spin filtering through quantum spin interference is addressed exactly, in two dimensions, in a medium that has both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings and an applied external magnetic field. The problem is addressed from the fully non-Abelian Gauge formulation. We propose an experimentally feasible electronic Mach Zehnder Interferometer and solve for the perfect spin filtering conditions. We find two broad solutions, one where filtering is achieved in the original incoming basis, that is purely a non-Abelian solution, and the other where one needs a tilted axis to observe the polarized output spinor. The latter solution is well approximated by an Abelianized approximation. Both solutions apply for arbitrary incoming polarization, and are only limited by the randomness of the incoming spinor state.

Comment on "Equilibrum spin currents: Non-Abelian Gauge Invariance and Color Diamagnetism in Condensed Matter"

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 106601], I. V. Tokatly addresses a non Abelian formulation of spin orbit interaction in condensed matter, restricting to a gauge symmetric scenario. In this comment we draw attention on the relevance of gauge symmetry breaking on such formulation and point out why this is a necessary ingredient for properly describing the associated diamagnetic color currents.

Two electron entanglement in quasi-one dimensional system: Role of resonances

We analyze the role of resonances in two-fermion entanglement production for a quasi one-dimensional two channel scattering problem. We solve exactly for the problem of a two-fermion antisymmetric product state scattering off a double delta well potential. It is shown that the two-particle concurrence of the post-selected state has an oscillatory behavior where the concurrence vanishes at the values of momenta for virtual bound states in the double well. These concurrence zeros are interpreted in terms of the uncertainty in the knowledge of the state of the one particle subspace reduced one particle density matrix. Our results suggest manipulation of fermion entanglement production through the resonance structure of quantum dots.
