Exact quantum-mechanical equations for particle beams

The exact quantum-mechanical equations for beams of free particles including photons and for beams of Dirac and spin-1 particles in a uniform magnetic field have been derived. These equations present the exact generalizations of the well-known paraxial equations in optics (exact Helmholtz equation for light beams) and particle physics and of the previously obtained paraxial equation for a Dirac particle in a uniform magnetic field. Some basic properties of exact wave eigenfunctions of particle beams have been determined.

Zitterbewegung of massless particles

Zitterbewegung of massless particles with an arbitrary spin is analyzed in various representations. Dynamics of the group velocity of a massless particle as a whole and of the corresponding radius vector is determined. This radius vector defines any fixed point of the envelope of the moving wave packet characterizing the particle and its group velocity differs from the group velocities of any points of the wavefront. We consider free massless scalar and Dirac particles, the photon, and massive and massless particles with an arbitrary spin and describe them in different representations. For particles with an arbitrary spin, the generalized Feshbach-Villars representation and the Foldy-Wouthuysen one are used. Zitterbewegung takes place in any representation except for the Foldy-Wouthuysen one. Formulas describing the motion of a "trembling" free particle are the same in any representation. In the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, the operators of the velocity and momentum of a free particle are proportional and Zitterbewegung does not take place. Since the radius vector (position) and velocity operators are the quantum-mechanical counterparts of the classical position and velocity just in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, Zitterbewegung is not observable. The same conclusion has been previously made for free massive particles. For relativistic massive particles with spins 0, 1/2, 1 and massless particles with spins 0, 1/2 in arbitrarily strong electromagnetic fields, independent of the external fields Zitterbewegung does not appear in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation either. This conclusion is made for leading terms in the Hamiltonian proportional to the zero and first powers of the Planck constant and for such terms proportional to $\hbar^2$ which describe contact interactions.

Comprehensive Symmetric-Hybrid ring design for pEDM experiment at below $10^{-29}e\cdot$cm

A concise demonstrative summary of the Symmetric Hybrid ring design for the storage ring proton electric dipole moment experiment is presented. Critical issues such as lattice design, background electrical fields, geometrical phase, general relativity, spin coherence time and polarimeter systematics are presented. Overall, we find that with the currently proposed design iteration, systematic error sources are reduced by orders of magnitude and that the ring alignment requirements are within the currently available technology.

Twisted particles in heavy-ion collisions

The importance of production of twisted (vortex) particles in heavy-ion collisions is analyzed. Free twisted particles can possess giant intrinsic orbital angular momenta. Twisted particles are spatially localized and can be rather ubiquitous in laboratories and nature. Twisted photons have nonzero effective masses. Charged twisted particles can be recognized by their dynamics, magnetic moments, and specific effects in external fields.

General quantum-mechanical solution for twisted electrons in a uniform magnetic field

A theory of twisted (and other structured) paraxial electrons in a uniform magnetic field is developed. The obtained general quantum-mechanical solution of the relativistic paraxial equation contains the commonly accepted result as a specific case of unstructured electron waves. In the weak-field limit, our solution (unlike the existing theory) is consistent with the well-known equation for free twisted electron beams. The observable effect of a different behavior of relativistic Laguerre-Gauss beams with opposite directions of the orbital angular momentum penetrating from the free space into a magnetic field is predicted. Distinguishing features of the quantization of the velocity and the effective mass of structured electrons in the uniform magnetic field are analyzed.

Paraxial wave function and Gouy phase for a relativistic electron in a uniform magnetic field

A connection between relativistic quantum mechanics in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and the paraxial equations is established for a Dirac particle in external fields. The paraxial form of the Landau eigenfunction for a relativistic electron in a uniform magnetic field is determined. The obtained wave function contains the Gouy phase and significantly approaches to the paraxial wave function for a free electron.

preprint2020arXiv

Position and spin in relativistic quantum mechanics

The problem of the position and spin in relativistic quantum mechanics is analyzed in detail. It is definitively shown that the position and spin operators in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation (but not in the Dirac one) are quantum-mechanical counterparts of the classical position and spin variables. The probabilistic interpretation is valid only for Foldy-Wouthuysen wave functions. The relativistic spin operators are discussed. The spin-orbit interaction does not exist for a free particle if the conventional operators of the orbital angular momentum and the rest-frame spin are used. Alternative definitions of the orbital angular momentum and the spin are based on noncommutative geometry, do not satisfy standard commutation relations, and can allow the spin-orbit interaction.

Quasi-uniform gravitational field of a disk revisited

We calculate the quasi-uniform gravitational field of a disk in the weak-field approximation and demonstrate an inappropriateness of preceding results. The Riemann tensor of this field is determined. The nonexistence of the uniform gravitational field is proven without the use of the weak-field approximation. The previously found difference between equations of motion for the momentum and spin in the accelerated frame and in the quasi-uniform gravitational field also takes place for the disk. However, it does not violate the Einstein equivalence principle because of the nonexistence of the uniform gravitational field.

preprint2019arXiv

Zitterbewegung of bosons

Zitterbewegung of massive and massless scalar bosons and a massive Proca (spin-1) boson is analyzed. The equations describing the evolution of the velocity and position of the scalar boson in the generalized Feshbach-Villars representation and the corresponding equations for the massive Proca particle in the Sakata-Taketani representation are equivalent to each other and to the well-known equations for the Dirac particle. However, Zitterbewegung does not appear in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. Since the position and velocity operators in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and their transforms to other representations are the quantum-mechanical counterparts of the corresponding classical variables, Zitterbewegung is not observable.

Exact form of the exponential Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation operator for an arbitrary-spin particle

The exact exponential Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation operator applicable for a particle with an arbitrary spin is derived. It can be successfully utilized for verifying any Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation method based on the exponential operator. When a verified method is relativistic, the relativistic exponential operator should be expanded in the semirelativistic power series. The use of the obtained exponential operator for a derivation of the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian makes it possible to check the validity of any other method of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, while this possibility may need a greater computational effort.

General properties of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and applicability of the corrected original Foldy-Wouthuysen method

General properties of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation which is widely used in quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry are considered. Merits and demerits of the original Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation method are analyzed. While this method does not satisfy the Eriksen condition of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, it can be corrected with the use of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. We show a possibility of such a correction and propose an appropriate algorithm of calculations. An applicability of the corrected Foldy-Wouthuysen method is restricted by the condition of convergence of a series of relativistic corrections.

Local Lorentz transformations and Thomas effect in general relativity

The tetrad method is used for an introduction of local Lorentz frames and a detailed analysis of local Lorentz transformations. A formulation of equations of motion in local Lorentz frames is based on the Pomeransky-Khriplovich gravitoelectromagnetic fields. These fields are calculated in the most important special cases and their local Lorentz transformations are determined. The local Lorentz transformations and the Pomeransky-Khriplovich gravitoelectromagnetic fields are applied for a rigorous derivation of a general equation for the Thomas effect in Riemannian spacetimes and for a consideration of Einstein's equivalence principle and the Mathisson force.

Manifestations of the rotation and gravity of the Earth in high-energy physics experiments

The inertial (due to rotation) and gravitational fields of the Earth affect the motion of an elementary particle and its spin dynamics. This influence is not negligible and should be taken into account in high-energy physics experiments. Earth's influence is manifest in perturbations in the particle motion, in an additional precession of the spin, and in a change of the constitutive tensor of the Maxwell electrodynamics. Bigger corrections are oscillatory, and their contributions average to zero. Other corrections due to the inhomogeneity of the inertial field are not oscillatory but they are very small and may be important only for the storage ring electric dipole moment experiments. Earth's gravity causes the Newton-like force, the reaction force provided by a focusing system, and additional torques acting on the spin. However, there are no observable indications of the electromagnetic effects due to Earth's gravity.

preprint2015arXiv

Energy expectation values of a particle in nonstationary fields

We show that the origin of the nonequivalence of Hamiltonians in different representations is a change of the form of the time-derivative operator at a time-dependent unitary transformation. This nonequivalence does not lead to an ambiguity of the energy expectation values of a particle in nonstationary fields but assigns the basic representation. It has been explicitly or implicitly supposed in previous investigations that this representation is the Dirac one. We prove the alternative assertion about the basic role of the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. We also derive the general equation for the energy expectation values in the Dirac representation. As an example, we consider a spin-1/2 particle with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments in strong time-dependent electromagnetic fields. We apply the obtained results to a spin-1/2 particle in a plane monochromatic electromagnetic wave and give an example of the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation in the nonstationary case.

Field of a moving locked charge as applied to beam-beam interactions in storage rings

It is shown that the Lorentz transformation cannot in general be formally applied to potentials and fields of particles locked in a certain region. In particular, this property relates to nucleons in nuclei and to particles and nuclei in storage rings. Even if they move with high velocities, their electric fields are defined by the Coulomb law. The result obtained is rather important for the planned deuteron electric-dipole-moment experiment in storage rings.

preprint2015arXiv

General dynamics of tensor polarization of particles and nuclei in external fields

The tensor polarization of particles and nuclei becomes constant in the coordinate system rotating with the same angular velocity as the spin and rotates in the lab frame with the above angular velocity. The general equation defining the time dependence of the tensor polarization is derived. An explicit form of dynamics of this polarization is found in the case when the initial polarization is axially symmetric.

preprint2015arXiv

General method of the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and proof of validity of the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian

A general method of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is developed. This method is applicable to relativistic particles with any spin in arbitrarily strong external fields. It can be used when the de Broglie wavelength is much smaller than the characteristic distance. Contrary to previously developed relativistic methods, the present method satisfies the condition of the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and is well substantiated. The derived relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is expanded in powers of the Planck constant. In this expansion, terms proportional to the zero and first powers are determined exactly in accordance with the above condition and terms proportional to higher powers are not specified. The obtained result agrees with the corresponding formula for the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian previously deduced by an iterative relativistic method and proves the validity of results obtained with this formula.

New symmetry properties of pointlike scalar and Dirac particles

New symmetry properties are found for pointlike scalar and Dirac particles (Higgs boson and all leptons) in Riemannian and Riemann-Cartan spacetimes in the presence of electromagnetic interactions. A Hermitian form of the Klein-Gordon equation for a pointlike scalar particle in an arbitrary n-dimensional Riemannian (or Riemann-Cartan) spacetime is obtained. New conformal symmetries of initial and Hermitian forms of this equation are ascertained. In the above spacetime, general Hamiltonians in the generalized Feshbach-Villars and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations are derived. The conformal-like transformation conserving these Hamiltonians is found. Corresponding conformal symmetries of a Dirac particle are determined. It is proven that all conformal symmetries remain unchanged by an inclusion of electromagnetic interactions.

Spin precession of a particle with an electric dipole moment: contributions from classical electrodynamics and from the Thomas effect

The new derivation of the equation of the spin precession is given for a particle possessing electric and magnetic dipole moments. Contributions from classical electrodynamics and from the Thomas effect are explicitly separated. A fully covariant approach is used. The final equation is expressed in a very simple form in terms of the fields in the instantaneously accompanying frame. The Lorentz transformations of the electric and magnetic dipole moments and of the spin are derived from basic equations of classical electrodynamics. For this purpose, the Maxwell equations in matter are used and the result is confirmed by other methods. An antisymmetric four-tensor is correctly constructed from the electric and magnetic dipole moments.

Spin-torsion coupling and gravitational moments of Dirac fermions: theory and experimental bounds

We discuss the quantum dynamics of the Dirac fermion particle in a gauge gravitational field. The minimal as well as the Pauli-type nonminimal coupling of a fermion with external fields is studied, bringing into consideration the notions of the translational and the Lorentz gravitational moments. The anomalous gravitomagnetic and gravitoelectric moments are ruled out on the basis of the covariance arguments. We derive the general Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for an arbitrary configuration of the gauge gravitational field without assuming it weak. Making use of the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian for the Dirac particle coupled to magnetic field in a noninertial reference system, we analyze the recent experimental data and obtain bounds on the spacetime torsion.

Comparison of Spin Dynamics in the Cylindrical and Frenet-Serret Coordinate Systems

A comparative analysis of a description of spin dynamics in the cylindrical and Frenet-Serret coordinate systems is carried out. An equivalence of these two systems is shown. A possibility of efficient use of the cylindrical coordinate system for a calculation of spin evolution of particles and nuclei in accelerators and storage rings is caused by an immobility of its coordinate axes relative to stationary detectors.

High-precision description and new properties of a spin-1 particle in a magnetic field

The exact Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is derived for a pointlike spin-1 particle with a normal magnetic moment in a nonuniform magnetic field. For a uniform magnetic field, it is exactly separated into terms linear and quadratic in spin. New unexpected properties of a particle with an anomalous magnetic moment are found. Spin projections of a particle moving in a uniform magnetic field are not integer and the tensor polarization is asymmetric in the plane orthogonal to the field. Previously described spin-tensor effects caused by the tensor magnetic polarizability exist not only for nuclei but also for pointlike particles.

Quantum-mechanical description of Lense-Thirring effect for relativistic scalar particles

Exact expression for the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian of scalar particles is used for a quantum-mechanical description of the relativistic Lense-Thirring effect. The exact evolution of the angular momentum operator in the Kerr field approximated by a spatially isotropic metric is found. The quantum-mechanical description of the full Lense-Thirring effect based on the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector is given in the nonrelativistic and weak-field approximation. Relativistic quantum-mechanical equations for the velocity and acceleration operators are obtained. The equation for the acceleration defines the Coriolis-like and centrifugal-like accelerations and presents the quantum-mechanical description of the frame-dragging effect.

Spin effects and compactification

We consider the dynamics of Dirac particles moving in the curved spaces with one coordinate subjected to compactification and thus interpolating smoothly between three- and two-dimensional spaces. We use the model of compactification, which allows us to perform the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the Dirac equation and then to obtain the exact solutions of the equations of motion for momentum and spin in the classical limit. The spin precesses with the variable angular velocity, and a "flick" may appear in the remnant two-dimensional space once or twice during the period. We note an irreversibility in the particle dynamics because the particle can always penetrate from the lower-dimensional region to the higher-dimensional region, but not inversely.

Comparative analysis of direct and "step-by-step" Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation methods

Relativistic methods for the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the ``step-by-step'' type already at the first step give an expression for the Hamilton operator not coinciding with the exact result determined by the Eriksen method. The methods agree for the zeroth and first orders in the Planck constant terms but do not agree for the second and higher-order terms. We analyze the benefits and drawbacks of various methods and establish their applicability boundaries.

Connection between beam polarization and systematical errors in storage ring electric-dipole-moment experiments

Analysis of spin dynamics in storage ring electric-dipole-moment (EDM) experiments ascertains that the use of initial vertical beam polarization allows to cancel spin-dependent systematical errors imitating the EDM effect. While the use of this polarization meets certain difficulties, it should be considered as an alternative or supplementary possibility of fulfilling the EDM experiment.

Foldy-Wouthyusen Transformation and Semiclassical Limit for Relativistic Particles in Strong External Fields

A general method of the Foldy-Wouthyusen (FW) transformation for relativistic particles of arbitrary spin in strong external fields has been developed. The use of the found transformation operator is not restricted by any definite commutation relations between even and odd operators. The final FW Hamiltonian can be expanded into a power series in the Planck constant which characterizes the order of magnitude of quantum corrections. Exact expressions for low-order terms in the Planck constant can be derived. Finding these expressions allows to perform a simple transition to the semiclassical approximation which defines a classical limit of the relativistic quantum mechanics. As an example, interactions of spin-1/2 and scalar particles with a strong electromagnetic field have been considered. Quantum and semiclassical equations of motion of particles and their spins have been deduced. Full agreement between quantum and classical theories has been established.

preprint2013arXiv

Quantum-mechanical description of spin-1 particles with electric dipole moments

The Proca-Corben-Schwinger equations for a spin-1 particle with an anomalous magnetic moment are added by a term describing an electric dipole moment, then they are reduced to a Hamiltonian form, and finally they are brought to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. Relativistic equations of motion are derived. The needed agreement between quantum-mechanical and classical relativistic equations of motion is proved. The scalar and tensor electric and magnetic polarizabilities of pointlike spin-1 particles (W bosons) are calculated for the first time.

Scalar particle in general inertial and gravitational fields and conformal invariance revisited

The new manifestation of conformal invariance for a massless scalar particle in a Riemannian spacetime of general relativity is found. Conformal transformations conserve the Hamiltonian and wave function in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. Similarity of manifestations of conformal invariance for massless scalar and Dirac particles is proved. New exact Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonians are derived for both massive and massless scalar particles in a general static spacetime and in a frame rotating in the Kerr field approximated by a spatially isotropic metric. The latter case covers an observer on the ground of the Earth or on a satellite and takes into account the Lense-Thirring effect. High-precision formulas are obtained for an arbitrary spacetime metric. General quantum-mechanical equations of motion are derived. Their classical limit coincides with corresponding classical equations.

Spin in an arbitrary gravitational field

We study the quantum mechanics of a Dirac fermion on a curved spacetime manifold. The metric of the spacetime is completely arbitrary, allowing for the discussion of all possible inertial and gravitational field configurations. In this framework, we find the Hermitian Dirac Hamiltonian for an arbitrary classical external field (including the gravitational and electromagnetic ones). In order to discuss the physical content of the quantum-mechanical model, we further apply the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, and derive the quantum equations of motion for the spin and position operators. We analyse the semiclassical limit of these equations and compare the results with the dynamics of a classical particle with spin in the framework of the standard Mathisson-Papapetrou theory and in the classical canonical theory. The comparison of the quantum mechanical and classical equations of motion of a spinning particle in an arbitrary gravitational field shows their complete agreement.

Validation of the Eriksen Method of the Exact Foldy-Wouthuysen Representation

The Eriksen method is proven to yield a correct and exact result when a sufficient condition of exact transformation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation is satisfied. Therefore, the Eriksen method is confirmed as valid. This makes it possible to establish the limits within which the approximate "step-by-step" methods are applicable. The latter is done by comparing the relativistic formulas for a Hamiltonian operator in the FW representation (obtained using those methods) and the known expression for the first terms of a series, which defines the expansion of this operator in powers of v/c as found by applying the Eriksen method.

preprint2011arXiv

Dirac fermions in strong gravitational fields

We discuss the dynamics of the Dirac fermions in the general strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields. We derive the general Hermitian Dirac Hamiltonian and transform it to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation for the spatially isotropic metric. The quantum operator equations of motion are obtained and the semiclassical limit is analyzed. The comparison of the quantum mechanical and classical equations shows their complete agreement. The helicity dynamics in strong fields is discussed. Squaring the covariant Dirac equation explicitly shows a similarity of the interactions of electromagnetic and gravitational fields with a charged and spinning particle.

Potential for a new muon g-2 experiment

A new experiment to measure the muon g-2 factor is proposed. We suppose the sensitivity of this experiment to be about 0.03 ppm. The developed experiment can be performed on an ordinary storage ring with a noncontinuous field created by usual magnets. When the total length of straight sections of the ring is appropriate, the spin rotation frequency becomes almost independent of the particle momentum. In this case, a high-precision measurement of an average magnetic field can be carried out with polarized proton beams. A muon beam energy can be arbitrary. Possibilities to avoid a betatron resonance are analyzed and corrections to the g-2 frequency are considered.

Potential for measurement of the tensor electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the deuteron in storage-ring experiments with polarized beams

Measurement of the tensor electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the deuteron is of great interest, especially in connection with the possibilities of COSY and GSI. These polarizabilities can be measured in storage rings by the frozen spin method providing a disappearance of g-2 precession. This method will be used in the planned deuteron electric-dipole-moment experiment in storage rings. The tensor electric polarizability of the deuteron significantly influences the buildup of the vertical polarization in the above experiment. The spin interactions depending on the electric dipole moment, the tensor electric polarizability, and main systematical errors caused by field misalignments have very different symmetries. For the considered experimental conditions, the sensitivity to the deuteron EDM of $1\times10^{-29} e\cdot$cm corresponds to measuring the both of tensor polarizabilities with an accuracy of $δα_T\approxδβ_T\approx5\times10^{-42}$ cm$^3$. This conservative estimate can be improved by excluding the systematical error caused by the field instability which is negligible for the measurement of the tensor polarizabilities. To find the tensor magnetic polarizability, the horizontal components of the polarization vector should be measured.

Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic particles in external fields

A method of Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1/2 particles in external fields is proposed. It permits determination of the Hamilton operator in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation with any accuracy. Interactions between a particle having an anomalous magnetic moment and nonstationary electromagnetic and electroweak fields are investigated.
