First passage times for decoupled random walks

Motivated by a connection to the infinite Ginibre point process, decoupled random walks were introduced in a recent article Alsmeyer, Iksanov and Kabluchko (2025). The decoupled random walk is a sequence of independent random variables, in which the $n$th variable has the same distribution as the position at time $n$ of a standard random walk with nonnegative increments. We prove distributional convergence in the Skorokhod space equipped with the $J_1$-topology of the running maxima and the first passage times of decoupled random walks. We show that there exist five different regimes, in which distinct limit theorems arise. Rather different functional limit theorems for the number of visits of decoupled standard random walk to the interval $[0,t]$ as $t\to\infty$ were earlier obtained in the aforementioned paper Alsmeyer, Iksanov and Kabluchko (2025). While the limit processes for the first passage times are inverse extremal-like processes, the limit processes for the number of visits are stationary Gaussian.

Functional limit theorems for random walks perturbed by positive alpha-stable jumps

Let $ξ_1$, $ξ_2,\ldots$ be i.i.d. random variables of zero mean and finite variance and $η_1$, $η_2,\ldots$ positive i.i.d. random variables whose distribution belongs to the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable distribution, $α\in (0,1)$. The two collections are assumed independent. We consider a Markov chain with jumps of two types. If the present position of the Markov chain is positive, then the jump $ξ_k$ occurs; if the present position of the Markov chain is nonpositive, then its next position is $η_j$. We prove a functional limit theorem for this Markov chain under Donsker's scaling. The weak limit is a nonnegative process $(X(t))_{t\geq 0}$ satisfying a stochastic equation ${\rm d}X(t)={\rm d}W(t)+ {\rm d}U_α(L_X^{(0)}(t))$, where $W$ is a Brownian motion, $U_α$ is an $α$-stable subordinator which is independent of $W$, and $L_X^{(0)}$ is a local time of $X$ at $0$. Also, we explain that $X$ is a Feller Brownian motion with a `jump-type' exit from $0$.

Limit theorems for discounted convergent perpetuities II

Let $(ξ_1, η_1)$, $(ξ_2, η_2),\ldots$ be independent identically distributed $\mathbb{R}^2$-valued random vectors. Assuming that $ξ_1$ has zero mean and finite variance and imposing three distinct groups of assumptions on the distribution of $η_1$ we prove three functional limit theorems for the logarithm of convergent discounted perpetuities $\sum_{k\geq 0}e^{ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k-ak}η_{k+1}$ as $a\to 0+$. Also, we prove a law of the iterated logarithm which corresponds to one of the aforementioned functional limit theorems. The present paper continues a line of research initiated in the paper Iksanov, Nikitin and Samoillenko (2022), which focused on limit theorems for a different type of convergent discounted perpetuities.

Small counts in nested Karlin's occupancy scheme generated by discrete Weibull-like distributions

A nested Karlin's occupancy scheme is a symbiosis of classical Karlin's balls-in-boxes scheme and a weighted branching process. To define it, imagine a deterministic weighted branching process in which weights of the first generation individuals are given by the elements of a discrete probability distribution. For each positive integer $j$, identify the $j$th generation individuals with the $j$th generation boxes. The collection of balls is one and the same for all generations, and each ball starts at the root of the weighted branching process tree and moves along the tree according to the following rule: transition from a mother box to a daughter box occurs with probability given by the ratio of the daughter and mother weights. Assume that there are $n$ balls and that the discrete probability distribution responsible for the first generation is Weibull-like. Denote by $\mathcal{K}_n^{(j)}(l)$ and $\mathcal{K}_n^{*(j)}(l)$ the number of the $j$th generation boxes which contain at least $l$ balls and exactly $l$ balls, respectively. We prove functional limit theorems (FLTs) for the matrix-valued processes $\big(\mathcal{K}_{[{\rm e}^{T+\cdot}]}^{(j)}(l)\big)_{j,l\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $\big(\mathcal{ K}_{[{\rm e}^{T+\cdot}]}^{*(j)}(l)\big)_{j,l\in\mathbb{N}}$, properly normalized and centered, as $T\to \infty$. The present FLTs are an extension of a FLT proved by Iksanov, Kabluchko and Kotelnikova (2022) for the vector-valued process $\big(\mathcal{K}_{[{\rm e}^{T+\cdot}]}^{(j)}(1)\big)_{j\in\mathbb{N}}$. While the rows of each of the limit matrix-valued processes are independent and identically distributed, the entries within each row are stationary Gaussian processes with explicitly given covariances and cross-covariances. We provide an integral representation for each row. The results obtained are new even for Karlin's occupancy scheme.

Stable fluctuations of iterated perturbed random walks in intermediate generations of a general branching process tree

Consider a general branching process, a.k.a. Crump-Mode-Jagers process, generated by a perturbed random walk $η_1$, $ξ_1+η_2$, $ξ_1+ξ_2+η_3,\ldots$. Here, $(ξ_1,η_1)$, $(ξ_2, η_2),\ldots$ are independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. Denote by $N_j(t)$ the number of the $j$th generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$. Assume that $j=j(t)\to\infty$ and $j(t)=o(t^a)$ as $t\to\infty$ for some explicitly given $a>0$ (to be specified in the paper). The corresponding $j$th generation belongs to the set of intermediate generations. We provide sufficient conditions under which finite-dimensional distributions of the process $(N_{\lfloor j(t)u\rfloor}(t))_{u>0}$, properly normalized and centered, converge weakly to those of an integral functional of a stable Lévy process with finite mean.

Limit theorems for discounted convergent perpetuities

Let $(ξ_1, η_1)$, $(ξ_2, η_2),\ldots$ be independent identically distributed $\mathbb{R}^2$-valued random vectors. We prove a strong law of large numbers, a functional central limit theorem and a law of the iterated logarithm for convergent perpetuities $\sum_{k\geq 0}b^{ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k}η_{k+1}$ as $b\to 1-$. Under the standard actuarial interpretation, these results correspond to the situation when the actuarial market is close to the customer-friendly scenario of no risk.

A Brownian weak limit for the least common multiple of a random m-tuple of integers

Let $B_n(m)$ be a set picked uniformly at random among all $m$-elements subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. We provide a pathwise construction of the collection $(B_n(m))_{1\leq m\leq n}$ and prove that the logarithm of the least common multiple of the integers in $(B_n(\lfloor mt\rfloor))_{t\geq 0}$, properly centered and normalized, converges to a Brownian motion when both $m,n$ tend to infinity. Our approach consists of two steps. First, we show that the aforementioned result is a consequence of a multidimensional central limit theorem for the logarithm of the least common multiple of $m$ independent random variables having uniform distribution on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Second, we offer a novel approximation of the least common multiple of a random sample by the product of the elements of the sample with neglected multiplicities in their prime decompositions.

On the derivative martingale in a branching random walk

We work under the A\"ıdékon-Chen conditions which ensure that the derivative martingale in a supercritical branching random walk on the line converges almost surely to a nondegenerate nonnegative random variable that we denote by $Z$. It is shown that $\mathbb{E} Z\mathbf{1}_{\{Z\le x\}}=\log x+o(\log x)$ as $x\to\infty$. Also, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions under which $\mathbb{E} Z\mathbf{1}_{\{Z\le x\}}=\log x+{\rm const}+o(1)$ as $x\to\infty$. This more precise asymptotics is a key tool for proving distributional limit theorems which quantify the rate of convergence of the derivative martingale to its limit $Z$. The methodological novelty of the present paper is a three terms representation of a subharmonic function of at most linear growth for a killed centered random walk of finite variance. This yields the aforementioned asymptotics and should also be applicable to other models.

A functional limit theorem for general shot noise processes

By a general shot noise process we mean a shot noise process in which the counting process of shots is arbitrary locally finite. Assuming that the counting process of shots satisfies a functional limit theorem in the Skorokhod space with a locally Hölder continuous Gaussian limit process and that the response function is regularly varying at infinity we prove that the corresponding general shot noise process satisfies a similar functional limit theorem with a different limit process and different normalization and centering functions. For instance, if the limit process for the counting process of shots is a Brownian motion, then the limit process for the general shot noise process is a Riemann-Liouville process. We specialize our result for five particular counting processes. Also, we investigate Hölder continuity of the limit processes for general shot noise processes.

Weak convergence of random processes with immigration at random times

By a random process with immigration at random times we mean a shot noise process with a random response function (response process) in which shots occur at arbitrary random times. The so defined random processes generalize random processes with immigration at the epochs of a renewal process which were introduced in [Iksanov et al. (2017). Bernoulli, 23, 1233--1278] and bear a strong resemblance to a random characteristic in general branching processes and the counting process in a fixed generation of a branching random walk generated by a general point process. We provide sufficient conditions which ensure weak convergence of finite-dimensional distributions of these processes to certain Gaussian processes. Our main result is specialised to several particular instances of random times and response processes.

A central limit theorem and a law of the iterated logarithm for the Biggins martingale of the supercritical branching random walk

Let $(W_n(θ))_{n\in\mathbb N_0}$ be the Biggins martingale associated with a supercritical branching random walk and denote by $W_\infty(θ)$ its limit. Assuming essentially that the martingale $(W_n(2θ))_{n\in\mathbb N_0}$ is uniformly integrable and that $\text{Var} W_1(θ)$ is finite, we prove a functional central limit theorem for the tail process $(W_\infty(θ) - W_{n+r}(θ))_{r\in\mathbb N_0}$ and a law of the iterated logarithm for $W_\infty(θ)-W_n(θ)$, as $n\to\infty$.

A law of the iterated logarithm for the number of occupied boxes in the Bernoulli sieve

The Bernoulli sieve is an infinite occupancy scheme obtained by allocating the points of a uniform $[0,1]$ sample over an infinite collection of intervals made up by successive positions of a multiplicative random walk independent of the uniform sample. We prove a law of the iterated logarithm for the number of non-empty (occupied) intervals as the size of the uniform sample becomes large.

Fractionally integrated inverse stable subordinators

A fractionally integrated inverse stable subordinator (FIISS) is the convolution of a power function and an inverse stable subordinator. We show that the FIISS is a scaling limit in the Skorokhod space of a renewal shot noise process with heavy-tailed, infinite mean `inter-shot' distribution and regularly varying response function. We prove local Hölder continuity of FIISS and a law of iterated logarithm for both small and large times.

Functional limit theorems for Galton-Watson processes with very active immigration

We prove weak convergence on the Skorokhod space of Galton-Watson processes with immigration, properly normalized, under the assumption that the tail of the immigration distribution has a logarithmic decay. The limits are extremal shot noise processes. By considering marginal distributions, we recover the results of Pakes [Adv. Appl. Probab., 11(1979), 31--62].

Functional limit theorems for the maxima of perturbed random walks and divergent perpetuities in the $M_1$-topology

Let $(ξ_1,η_1)$, $(ξ_2,η_2),\ldots$ be a sequence of i.i.d. two-dimensional random vectors. In the earlier article Iksanov and Pilipenko (2014) weak convergence in the $J_1$-topology on the Skorokhod space of $n^{-1/2}\underset{0\leq k\leq \cdot}{\max}\,(ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k+η_{k+1})$ was proved under the assumption that contributions of $\underset{0\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,(ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k)$ and $\underset{1\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,η_k$ to the limit are comparable and that $n^{-1/2}(ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_{[n\cdot]})$ is attracted to a Brownian motion. In the present paper, we continue this line of research and investigate a more complicated situation when $ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_{[n\cdot]}$, properly normalized without centering, is attracted to a centered stable Lévy process, a process with jumps. As a consequence, weak convergence normally holds in the $M_1$-topology. We also provide sufficient conditions for the $J_1$-convergence. For completeness, less interesting situations are discussed when one of the sequences $\underset{0\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,(ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k)$ and $\underset{1\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,η_k$ dominates the other. An application of our main results to divergent perpetuities with positive entries is given.

Functional limit theorems for the number of busy servers in a $G/G/\infty$ queue

We discuss weak convergence of the number of busy servers in a $G/G/\infty$ queue in the $J_1$-topology on the Skorokhod space. We prove two functional limit theorems, with random and nonrandom centering, respectively, thereby solving two open problems stated in Mikosch and Resnick (2006}. A new integral representation for the limit Gaussian process is given.

Functional limit theorems for the number of occupied boxes in the Bernoulli sieve

The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite Karlin "balls-in-boxes" scheme with random probabilities of stick-breaking type. Assuming that the number of placed balls equals $n$, we prove several functional limit theorems (FLTs) in the Skorohod space $D[0,1]$ endowed with the $J_{1}$- or $M_{1}$-topology for the number $K_{n}^{*}(t)$ of boxes containing at most $[n^{t}]$ balls, $t\in[0,1]$, and the random distribution function $K_{n}^{*}(t)/K_{n}^{*}(1)$, as $n\to\infty$. The limit processes for $K_{n}^{*}(t)$ are of the form $(X(1)-X((1-t)-))_{t\in[0,1]}$, where $X$ is either a Brownian motion, a spectrally negative stable Lévy process, or an inverse stable subordinator. The small values probabilities for the stick-breaking factor determine which of the alternatives occurs. If the logarithm of this factor is integrable, the limit process for $K_{n}^{*}(t)/K_{n}^{*}(1)$ is a Lévy bridge. Our approach relies upon two novel ingredients and particularly enables us to dispense with a Poissonization-de-Poissonization step which has been an essential component in all the previous studies of $K_{n}^{*}(1)$. First, for any Karlin occupancy scheme with deterministic probabilities $(p_{k})_{k\ge 1}$, we obtain an approximation, uniformly in $t\in[0,1]$, of the number of boxes with at most $[n^{t}]$ balls by a counting function defined in terms of $(p_{k})_{k\ge 1}$. Second, we prove several FLTs for the number of visits to the interval $[0,nt]$ by a perturbed random walk, as $n\to\infty$.

Local universality for real roots of random trigonometric polynomials

Consider a random trigonometric polynomial $X_n: \mathbb R \to \mathbb R$ of the form $$ X_n(t) = \sum_{k=1}^n \left( ξ_k \sin (kt) + η_k \cos (kt)\right), $$ where $(ξ_1,η_1),(ξ_2,η_2),\ldots$ are independent identically distributed bivariate real random vectors with zero mean and unit covariance matrix. Let $(s_n)_{n\in\mathbb N}$ be any sequence of real numbers. We prove that as $n\to\infty$, the number of real zeros of $X_n$ in the interval $[s_n+a/n, s_n+ b/n]$ converges in distribution to the number of zeros in the interval $[a,b]$ of a stationary, zero-mean Gaussian process with correlation function $(\sin t)/t$. We also establish similar local universality results for the centered random vectors $(ξ_k,η_k)$ having an arbitrary covariance matrix or belonging to the domain of attraction of a two-dimensional $α$-stable law.

Moment convergence of first-passage times in renewal theory

Let $ξ_1, ξ_2, \ldots$ be independent copies of a positive random variable $ξ$, $S_0 = 0$, and $S_k = ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k$, $k \in \mathbb{N}$. Define $N(t) = \inf\{k \in \mathbb{N}: S_k>t\}$ for $t\geq 0$. The process $(N(t))_{t\geq 0}$ is the first-passage time process associated with $(S_k)_{k\geq 0}$. It is known that if the law of $ξ$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law or $\mathbb{P}(ξ>t)$ varies slowly at $\infty$, then $N(t)$, suitably shifted and scaled, converges in distribution as $t \to \infty$ to a random variable $W$ with a stable law or a Mittag-Leffler law. We investigate whether there is convergence of the power and exponential moments to the corresponding moments of $W$. Further, the analogous problem for first-passage times of subordinators is considered.

Weak convergence of renewal shot noise processes in the case of slowly varying normalization

We investigate weak convergence of finite-dimensional distributions of a renewal shot noise process $(Y(t))_{t\geq 0}$ with deterministic response function $h$ and the shots occurring at the times $0 = S_0 < S_1 < S_2<\ldots$, where $(S_n)$ is a random walk with i.i.d.\ jumps. There has been an outbreak of recent activity around this topic. We are interested in one out of few cases which remained open: $h$ is regularly varying at $\infty$ of index $-1/2$ and the integral of $h^2$ is infinite. Assuming that $S_1$ has a moment of order $r>2$ we use a strong approximation argument to show that the random fluctuations of $Y(s)$ occur on the scale $s=t+g(t,u)$ for $u\in [0,1]$, as $t\to\infty$, and, on the level of finite-dimensional distributions, are well approximated by the sum of a Brownian motion and a Gaussian process with independent values (the two processes being independent). The scaling function $g$ above depends on the slowly varying factor of $h$. If, for instance, $\lim_{t\to\infty}t^{1/2}h(t)\in (0,\infty)$, then $g(t,u)=t^u$.

A functional limit theorem for locally perturbed random walks

A particle moves randomly over the integer points of the real line. Jumps of the particle outside the membrane (a fixed "locally perturbating set") are i.i.d., have zero mean and finite variance, whereas jumps of the particle from the membrane have other distributions with finite means which may be different for different points of the membrane; furthermore, these jumps are mutually independent and independent of the jumps outside the membrane. Assuming that the particle cannot jump over the membrane we prove that the weak scaling limit of the particle position is a skew Brownian motion with parameter $γ\in [-1,1]$. The path of a skew Brownian motion is obtained by taking each excursion of a reflected Brownian motion, independently of the others, positive with probability $2^{-1}(1+γ)$ and negative with probability $2^{-1}(1-γ)$. To prove the weak convergence result we offer a new approach which is based on the martingale characterization of a skew Brownian motion. Among others, this enables us to provide the explicit formula for the parameter $γ$. In the previous articles the explicit formulae for the parameter have only been obtained under the assumption that outside the membrane the particle performs unit jumps.

Asymptotics of random processes with immigration I: scaling limits

Let $(X_1, ξ_1), (X_2,ξ_2),\ldots$ be i.i.d.~copies of a pair $(X,ξ)$ where $X$ is a random process with paths in the Skorokhod space $D[0,\infty)$ and $ξ$ is a positive random variable. Define $S_k := ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k$, $k \in \mathbb{N}_0$ and $Y(t) := \sum_{k\geq 0} X_{k+1}(t-S_k) 1_{\{S_k \leq t\}}$, $t\geq 0$. We call the process $(Y(t))_{t \geq 0}$ random process with immigration at the epochs of a renewal process. We investigate weak convergence of the finite-dimensional distributions of $(Y(ut))_{u>0}$ as $t\to\infty$. Under the assumptions that the covariance function of $X$ is regularly varying in $(0,\infty)\times (0,\infty)$ in a uniform way, the class of limiting processes is rather rich and includes Gaussian processes with explicitly given covariance functions, fractionally integrated stable Lévy motions and their sums when the law of $ξ$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with finite mean, and conditionally Gaussian processes with explicitly given (conditional) covariance functions, fractionally integrated inverse stable subordinators and their sums when the law of $ξ$ belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with infinite mean.

Asymptotics of random processes with immigration II: convergence to stationarity

Let $X_1, X_2,\ldots$ be random elements of the Skorokhod space $D(\mathbb{R})$ and $ξ_1, ξ_2, \ldots$ positive random variables such that the pairs $(X_1,ξ_1), (X_2,ξ_2),\ldots$ are independent and identically distributed. We call the random process $(Y(t))_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$ defined by $Y(t):=\sum_{k \geq 0}X_{k+1}(t-ξ_1-\ldots-ξ_k)1_{\{ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k\leq t\}}$, $t\in\mathbb{R}$ random process with immigration at the epochs of a renewal process. Assuming that $X_k$ and $ξ_k$ are independent and that the distribution of $ξ_1$ is nonlattice and has finite mean we investigate weak convergence of $(Y(t))_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ as $t\to\infty$ in $D(\mathbb{R})$ endowed with the $J_1$-topology. The limits are stationary processes with immigration.

A remark on the paper "Renorming divergent perpetuities"

Let $(ξ_k)$ and $(η_k)$ be infinite independent samples from different distributions. We prove a functional limit theorem for the maximum of a perturbed random walk $\underset{0\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,(ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k+η_{k+1})$ in a situation where its asymptotics is affected by both $\underset{0\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,(ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_k)$ and $\underset{1\leq k\leq n}{\max}\,η_k$ to a comparable extent. This solves an open problem that we learned from the paper "Renorming divergent perpetuities" by P. Hitczenko and J. Wesołowski.

For a Lévy process on the real line, we provide complete criteria for the finiteness of exponential moments of the first passage time into the interval $(r,\infty)$, the sojourn time in the interval $(-\infty,r]$, and the last exit time from $(-\infty,r]$. Moreover, whenever these quantities are finite, we derive their respective asymptotic behavior as $r \to \infty$.

Fixed points of multivariate smoothing transforms with scalar weights

Given a sequence $(C_1,\ldots,C_d,T_1,T_2,\ldots)$ of real-valued random variables with $N := \#\{j \geq 1: T_j \not = 0\} < \infty$ almost surely, there is an associated smoothing transformation which maps a distribution $P$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ to the distribution of $\sum_{j \geq 1} T_j \mathbf{X}^{(j)} + \mathbf{C}$ where $\mathbf{C} = (C_1,\ldots,C_d)$ and $(\mathbf{X}^{(j)})_{j \geq 1}$ is a sequence of independent random vectors with distribution $P$ independent of $(C_1,\ldots,C_d,T_1,T_2,\ldots)$. We are interested in the fixed points of this mapping. By improving on the techniques developed in [G. Alsmeyer, J.D. Biggins, and M. Meiners. The functional equation of the smoothing transform {\em Ann. Probab.}, 40(5):2069--2105, 2012] and [G. Alsmeyer and M. Meiners. Fixed points of the smoothing transform: two-sided solutions. {\em Probab. Theory Related Fields}, 155(1-2):165--199, 2013], we determine the set of all fixed points under weak assumptions on $(C_1,\ldots,C_d,T_1,T_2,\ldots)$. In contrast to earlier studies, this includes the most intricate case when the $T_j$ take both positive and negative values with positive probability. In this case, in some situations, the set of fixed points is a subset of the corresponding set when the $T_j$ are replaced by their absolute values, while in other situations, additional solutions arise.

Functional limit theorems for divergent perpetuities in the contractive case

Let $\big(M_k, Q_k\big)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent copies of an $\mathbb{R}^2$-valued random vector. It is known that if $Y_n:=Q_1+M_1Q_2+...+M_1\cdot...\cdot M_{n-1}Q_n$ converges a.s. to a random variable $Y$, then the law of $Y$ satisfies the stochastic fixed-point equation $Y \overset{d}{=} Q_1+M_1Y$, where $(Q_1, M_1)$ is independent of $Y$. In the present paper we consider the situation when $|Y_n|$ diverges to $\infty$ in probability because $|Q_1|$ takes large values with high probability, whereas the multiplicative random walk with steps $M_k$'s tends to zero a.s. Under a regular variation assumption we show that $\log |Y_n|$, properly scaled and normalized, converge weakly in the Skorokhod space equipped with the $J_1$-topology to an extremal process. A similar result also holds for the corresponding Markov chains. Proofs rely upon a deterministic result which establishes the $J_1$-convergence of certain sums to a maximal function and subsequent use of the Skorokhod representation theorem.

Rate of convergence in the law of large numbers for supercritical general multi-type branching processes

We provide sufficient conditions for polynomial rate of convergence in the weak law of large numbers for supercritical general indecomposable multi-type branching processes. The main result is derived by investigating the embedded single-type process composed of all individuals having the same type as the ancestor. As an important intermediate step, we determine the (exact) polynomial rate of convergence of Nerman's martingale in continuous time to its limit. The techniques used also allow us to give streamlined proofs of the weak and strong laws of large numbers and ratio convergence for the processes in focus.

A two-type Bellman--Harris process initiated by a large number of particles

We investigate a two-type critical Bellman--Harris branching process with the following properties: the tail of the life-length distribution of the first type particles is of order $o(t^{-2})$; the tail of the life-length distribution of the second type particles is regularly varying at infinity with index $-β$, $β\in (0,1]$; at time $t=0$ the process starts with a large number $N$ of the second type particles and no particles of the first type. It is shown that the time axis $0\leq t<\infty $ splits into several regions whose ranges depend on $β$ and the ratio $N/t$ within each of which the process at time $t$ exhibits asymptotics (as $N,t\rightarrow \infty$) which is different from those in the other regions.

Functional limit theorems for renewal shot noise processes with increasing response functions

We consider renewal shot noise processes with response functions which are eventually nondecreasing and regularly varying at infinity. We prove weak convergence of renewal shot noise processes, properly normalized and centered, in the space $D[0,\infty)$ under the $J_1$ or $M_1$ topology. The limiting processes are either spectrally nonpositive stable Lévy processes, including the Brownian motion, or inverse stable subordinators (when the response function is slowly varying), or fractionally integrated stable processes or fractionally integrated inverse stable subordinators (when the index of regular variation is positive). The proof exploits fine properties of renewal processes, distributional properties of stable Lévy processes and the continuous mapping theorem.

Power and exponential moments of the number of visits and related quantities for perturbed random walks

Let $(ξ_1,η_1),(ξ_2,η_2),...$ be a sequence of i.i.d.\ copies of a random vector $(ξ,η)$ taking values in $\R^2$, and let $S_n := ξ_1+...+ξ_n$. The sequence $(S_{n-1} + η_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is then called perturbed random walk. We study random quantities defined in terms of the perturbed random walk: $τ(x)$, the first time the perturbed random walk exits the interval $(-\infty,x]$, $N(x)$, the number of visits to the interval $(-\infty,x]$, and $ρ(x)$, the last time the perturbed random walk visits the interval $(-\infty,x]$. We provide criteria for the a.s.\ finiteness and for the finiteness of exponential moments of these quantities. Further, we provide criteria for the finiteness of power moments of $N(x)$ and $ρ(x)$.

Weak convergence of finite-dimensional distributions of the number of empty boxes in the Bernoulli sieve

The Bernoulli sieve is a random allocation scheme obtained by placing independent points with the uniform [0,1] law into the intervals made up by successive positions of a multiplicative random walk with factors taking values in the interval (0,1). Assuming that the number of points is equal to n we investigate the weak convergence, as n tends to infinity, of finite-dimensional distributions of the number of empty intervals within the occupancy range. A new argument enables us to relax the constraints imposed in previous papers on the distribution of the factor of the multiplicative random walk.

A generalization of the Erdős-Turán law for the order of random permutation

We consider random permutations derived by sampling from stick-breaking partitions of the unit interval. The cycle structure of such a permutation can be associated with the path of a decreasing Markov chain on $n$ integers. Under certain assumptions on the stick-breaking factor we prove a central limit theorem for the logarithm of the order of the permutation, thus extending the classical Erdős-Turán law for the uniform permutations and its generalization for Ewens' permutations associated with sampling from the PD/GEM$(θ)$ distribution. Our approach is based on using perturbed random walks to obtain the limit laws for the sum of logarithms of the cycle lengths.

On asymptotics of the beta-coalescents

We show that the total number of collisions in the exchangeable coalescent process driven by the beta $(1,b)$ measure converges in distribution to a 1-stable law, as the initial number of particles goes to infinity. The stable limit law is also shown for the total branch length of the coalescent tree. These results were known previously for the instance $b=1$, which corresponds to the Bolthausen--Sznitman coalescent. The approach we take is based on estimating the quality of a renewal approximation to the coalescent in terms of a suitable Wasserstein distance. Application of the method to beta $(a,b)$-coalescents with $0<a<1$ leads to a simplified derivation of the known $(2-a)$-stable limit. We furthermore derive asymptotic expansions for the moments of the number of collisions and of the total branch length for the beta $(1,b)$-coalescent by exploiting the method of sequential approximations.

On the number of empty boxes in the Bernoulli sieve II

The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite "balls-in-boxes" occupancy scheme with random frequencies $P_k=W_1... W_{k-1}(1-W_k)$, where $(W_k)_{k\in\mn}$ are independent copies of a random variable $W$ taking values in $(0,1)$. Assuming that the number of balls equals $n$, let $L_n$ denote the number of empty boxes within the occupancy range. In the paper we investigate convergence in distribution of $L_n$ in the two cases which remained open after the previous studies. In particular, provided that $\me |\log W|=\me |\log (1-W)|=\infty$ and that the law of $W$ assigns comparable masses to the neighborhoods of 0 and 1, it is shown that $L_n$ weakly converges to a geometric law. This result is derived as a corollary to a more general assertion concerning the number of zero decrements of nonincreasing Markov chains. In the case that $\me |\log W|<\infty$ and $\me |\log (1-W)|=\infty$ we derive several further possible modes of convergence in distribution of $L_n$. It turns out that the class of possible limiting laws for, properly normalized and centered, $L_n$ includes normal laws and spectrally negative stable laws with finite mean. While investigating the second problem we develop some general results concerning the weak convergence of renewal shot-noise processes. This allows us to answer a question asked in Mikosch and Resnick (2006).

Regenerative compositions in the case of slow variation: A renewal theory approach

A regenerative composition structure is a sequence of ordered partitions derived from the range of a subordinator by a natural sampling procedure. In this paper, we extend previous studies Barbour and Gnedin (2006), Gnedin, Iksanov and Marynych (2010) and Gnedin, Pitman and Yor (2006) on the asymptotics of the number of blocks $K_n$ in the composition of integer $n$, in the case when the L{é}vy measure of the subordinator has a property of slow variation at 0. Using tools from the renewal theory the limit laws for $K_n$ are obtained in terms of integrals involving the Brownian motion or stable processes. In other words, the limit laws are either normal or other stable distributions, depending on the behavior of the tail of L{é}vy measure at $\infty$. Similar results are also derived for the number of singleton blocks.

Lambda-coalescents with dust component

We consider the lambda-coalescent processes with positive frequency of singleton clusters. The class in focus covers, for instance, the beta$(a,b)$-coalescents with $a>1$. We show that some large-sample properties of these processes can be derived by coupling the coalescent with an increasing L{é}vy process (subordinator), and by exploiting parallels with the theory of regenerative composition structures. In particular, we discuss the limit distributions of the absorption time and the number of collisions.

On the number of empty boxes in the Bernoulli sieve

The Bernoulli sieve is the infinite "balls-in-boxes" occupancy scheme with random frequencies $P_k=W_1...W_{k-1}(1-W_k)$, where $(W_k)_{k\in\mn}$ are independent copies of a random variable $W$ taking values in $(0,1)$. Assuming that the number of balls equals $n$, let $L_n$ denote the number of empty boxes within the occupancy range. The paper proves that, under a regular variation assumption, $L_n$, properly normalized without centering, weakly converges to a functional of an inverse stable subordinator. Proofs rely upon the observation that $(\log P_k)$ is a perturbed random walk. In particular, some results for general perturbed random walks are derived. The other result of the paper states that whenever $L_n$ weakly converges (without normalization) the limiting law is mixed Poisson.

Exponential moments of first passage times and related quantities for random walks

For a zero-delayed random walk on the real line, let $τ(x)$, $N(x)$ and $ρ(x)$ denote the first passage time into the interval $(x,\infty)$, the number of visits to the interval $(-\infty,x]$ and the last exit time from $(-\infty,x]$, respectively. In the present paper, we provide ultimate criteria for the finiteness of exponential moments of these quantities. Moreover, whenever these moments are finite, we derive their asymptotic behaviour, as $x \to \infty$.

Limit theorems for the number of occupied boxes in the Bernoulli sieve

The Bernoulli sieve is a version of the classical `balls-in-boxes' occupancy scheme, in which random frequencies of infinitely many boxes are produced by a multiplicative renewal process, also known as the residual allocation model or stick-breaking. We focus on the number $K_n$ of boxes occupied by at least one of $n$ balls, as $n\to\infty$. A variety of limiting distributions for $K_n$ is derived from the properties of associated perturbed random walks. Refining the approach based on the standard renewal theory we remove a moment constraint to cover the cases left open in previous studies.

The Bernoulli sieve: an overview

The Bernoulli sieve is a version of the classical balls-in-boxes occupancy scheme, in which random frequencies of infinitely many boxes are produced by a multiplicative random walk, also known as the residual allocation model or stick-breaking. We give an overview of the limit theorems concerning the number of boxes occupied by some balls out of the first $n$ balls thrown, and present some new results concerning the number of empty boxes within the occupancy range.
