Extension of the Einstein-Dirac-axion-aether theory based on an effective metric with a spinor kernel

We consider an axionic extension of the Einstein-Dirac-aether theory, which is based on the spinor modification of the kinetic term of the pseudoscalar field and describes the backreaction of the spinor field on the axionic dark matter. The main instrument of this extension is the effective metric constructed using the aether velocity four-vector and a kernel, which depends on the basic spinor scalar and on the square of the basic spinor pseudoscalar. The periodic potential of the axion field includes a guiding function, which regulates the dynamics of axions and predetermines the properties of their equilibrium states. This guiding function and the kernel of the effective metric, as well, are considered to be functions of the expansion scalar of the aether flow. The master equation for the guiding function is obtained as a consequence of the Lagrangian invariance with respect to the discrete transformations prescribed by the axion field shift symmetry. The self-consistent set of coupled master equations is derived, which includes new source-terms in the modified master equations for the spinor, axion, vector and gravitational fields. Cosmological applications of the extended theory are considered; new exact solutions of these equations are presented for the isotropic homogeneous model of the Universe evolution. Discussion is focused on the mechanism of backreaction of the spinor field on the axionic dark matter evolution.

Einstein-Yang-Mills-aether theory with nonlinear axion field: Decay of color aether and the axionic dark matter production

We establish a nonlinear version of the SU(N) symmetric theory, which describes self-consistently the interaction between the gravitational, gauge, vector and pseudoscalar (axion) fields. In the context of this theory the SU(N) symmetric multiplet of vector fields is associated with the color aether, the decay of which in the early Universe produced the canonic dynamic aether and the axionic dark matter. The SU(N) symmetric Yang-Mills field, associated with the color aether, forms the source, which transfers the energy of the decaying color aether to the axion field. The nonlinear modification of the model uses explicitly the requirement of discrete symmetry, prescribed by the axion field, and is based on the analogy with nonlinear physical pendulum. We show that in the framework of this nonlinear regular model the axion field can grow to an arbitrarily large value, thus explaining the abundance of the axionic dark matter in the Universe.

Nonlocal extension of causal thermodynamics of the isotropic cosmic fluid

We establish the nonlocal generalization of the Israel-Stewart model for the relativistic causal thermodynamics of the cosmic fluid, which evolves in the homogeneous isotropic Universe. Based on the second law of thermodynamics we derive the integro-differential master equation for the nonequilibrium pressure scalar and reduce it to the differential equation of the second order in time derivatives. We show that this master equation can be considered as the relativistic analog of the Burgers equation, which is known in the classical theory of viscoelasticity. We obtain the nonlinear key equation, which contains the energy density scalar only, and analyze two exact solutions of the model. The effective temperature is considered to be associated with the barotropic equation of state of the cosmic fluid.

Self-interaction in a cosmic dark fluid: The four-kernel rheological extension of the equations of state

We establish a new self-consistent model of coupling between the cosmic dark energy and dark matter in the framework of the rheological approach, which is based on the representation of the equations of state in terms of integral operators of the Volterra-type. We elaborate the so-called four-kernel model, in the framework of which both the dark energy and dark matter pressures are presented by two integrals containing the energy densities of the dark energy and dark matter. For the Volterra operators, the kernels of which are associated with the effects of fading memory, the corresponding isotropic homogeneous cosmological model is shown to be exactly integrable. We consider the classification of the model exact solutions, based on the analysis of roots of the characteristic polynomial associated with the key equation of the presented model. The scalars of the pressure and energy-density of the dark energy and dark matter, the Hubble function and acceleration parameter are presented explicitly as the functions of the dimensionless scale factor. The scale factor as the function of the cosmological time is found in quadratures and is described analytically, qualitatively and numerically. Asymptotic analysis allowed us to classify the models with respect to behavior typical for the Big Rip, Little Rip and Pseudo Rip (de Sitter type). Two intriguing exact cosmological solutions are discussed, which describe the super-exponential expansion and the symmetric bounce. New solutions are presented, which correspond to the quasi-periodic behavior of the state functions of the dark fluid and of the geometric characteristics of the Universe.

Extended relativistic non-equilibrium thermostatics of stellar structures with radiation pressure

We establish the extended formalism for description of the static spherically symmetric relativistic non-equilibrium stellar systems in the formation of which the radiation pressure plays the key role. The main concept of this extended formalism inherits the ideas, on which the Israel-Stewart causal thermodynamics is based, but now the unit spacelike four-vector, indicated by the term director, is exploited in addition to the unit timelike medium velocity four-vector. An application of the extended formalism is considered; we analyze the profiles of the non-equilibrium pressure and temperature as the functions of guiding parameters introduced phenomenologically.

Fingerprints of the cosmological constant: Folds in the profiles of the axionic dark matter distribution in a dyon exterior

We consider the magnetic monopole in the axionic dark matter environment (axionic dyon) in the framework of the Reissner - Nordström - de Sitter model. Our aim is to study the distribution of the pseudoscalar (axion) and electric fields near the so-called folds, which are characterized by the profiles with the central minimum, the barrier on the left, and the maximum on the right of this minimum. The electric field in the fold-like zones is shown to change the sign twice, i.e., the electric structure of the near zone of the axionic dyon contains the domain similar to a double electric layer. We have shown that the described fold-like structures in the profile of the gravitational potential, and in the profiles of the electric and axion fields can exist, when the value of the dyon mass belongs to the interval enclosed between two critical masses, which depend on the cosmological constant.

Magneto-electro-statics of axionically active systems: Induced field restructuring in magnetic stars

In the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory we consider a static field configuration in the outer zone of a magnetic star. We assume that this field configuration is formed by the following interacting quartet: a spherically symmetric gravitational field of the Reissner-Nordström type, pseudoscalar field, associated with an axionic dark matter, strong intrinsic magnetic field, and axionically induced electric field. Based on the analysis of the solutions to the master equations of the model, we show that the structure of the formed field configuration reveals the following triple effect. First, if the strong magnetic field of the star has the dipole component, the axionic halo around the magnetic star with spherically symmetric gravitational field is no longer spheroidal, and the distortion is induced by the axion-photon coupling; second, due to the distortion of the axionic halo the magnetic field is no longer pure dipolar, and the induced quadruple, octupole, etc., components appear thus redistributing the magnetic energy between the components with more steep radial profiles than the dipolar one; third, the interaction of the axionic and magnetic fields produces the electric field, which inherits their multipole structure. We attract attention to possible applications of the predicted field restructuring to the theory of axionic rotating magnetars.

New application of the Killing vector field formalism: Modified periodic potential and two-level profiles of the axionic dark matter distribution

We consider the structure of halos of the axionic dark matter, which surround massive relativistic objects with static spherically symmetric gravitational field and monopole-type magneto-electric fields. We work with the model of pseudoscalar field with the extended periodic potential, which depends on additional arguments proportional to the moduli of the Killing vectors; in our approach they play the roles of model guiding functions. The covariant model of the axion field with this modified potential is equipped with the extended formalism of the Killing vector fields, which is established in analogy with the formalism of the Einstein-aether theory, based on the introduction of a unit timelike dynamic vector field. We study the equilibrium state of the axion field, for which the extended potential and its derivative vanish, and illustrate the established formalism by the analysis of two-level axionic dark matter profiles, for which the stage delimiters relate to the critical values of the modulus of the timelike Killing vector field.

Spontaneous color polarization as a modus originis of the dynamic aether

We suggest the phenomenological model of emergence of the dynamic aether as a result of decay of the SU(N) symmetric field configuration containing the multiplet of vector fields. The scenario of the transition to the dynamic aether, which is characterized by one unit timelike vector field associated with the aether velocity, is based on the idea of spontaneous color polarization analogous to the spontaneous electric polarization in ferroelectric materials. The mechanism of spontaneous color polarization is described in the framework of anisotropic cosmological model of the Bianchi-I type; it involves into consideration the idea of critical behavior of the eigenvalues of the tensor of color polarization in the course of the Universe accelerated expansion. The interim stage of transition from the color aether to the canonic dynamic aether takes the finite period of time, the duration of which is predetermined by the phenomenologically introduced critical value of the expansion scalar.

Axionic extension of the Einstein-aether theory

We extend the Einstein-aether theory to take into account the interaction between a pseudoscalar field, which describes the axionic dark matter, and a time-like dynamic unit vector field, which characterizes the velocity of the aether motion. The Lagrangian of the Einstein-aether-axion theory includes cross-terms based on the axion field and its gradient four-vector, on the covariant derivative of the aether velocity four-vector, and on the Riemann tensor and its convolutions. We follow the principles of the Effective Field theory, and include into the Lagrangian of interactions all possible terms up to the second order in the covariant derivative. Interpretation of new couplings is given in terms of irreducible parts of the covariant derivative of the aether velocity, namely, the acceleration four-vector, the shear and vorticity tensors, and the expansion scalar. A spatially isotropic and homogeneous cosmological model with dynamic unit vector field and axionic dark matter is considered as an application of the established theory; new exact solutions are discussed, which describe models with a Big Rip, Pseudo Rip and de Sitter-type asymptotic behavior.

Electrodynamics of a Cosmic Dark Fluid

Cosmic Dark Fluid is considered as a non-stationary medium, in which electromagnetic waves propagate, and magneto-electric field structures emerge and evolve. A medium - type representation of the Dark Fluid allows us to involve into analysis the concepts and mathematical formalism elaborated in the framework of classical covariant electrodynamics of continua, and to distinguish dark analogs of well-known medium-effects, such as optical activity, pyro-electricity, piezo-magnetism, electro- and magneto-striction and dynamo-optical activity. The Dark Fluid is assumed to be formed by a duet of a Dark Matter (a pseudoscalar axionic constituent) and Dark Energy (a scalar element); respectively, we distinguish electrodynamic effects induced by these two constituents of the Dark Fluid. The review contains discussions of ten models, which describe electrodynamic effects induced by Dark Matter and/or Dark Energy. The models are accompanied by examples of exact solutions to the master equations, correspondingly extended; applications are considered for cosmology and space-times with spherical and pp-wave symmetries. In these applications we focused the attention on three main electromagnetic phenomena induced by the Dark Fluid: first, emergence of Longitudinal Magneto-Electric Clusters; second, generation of anomalous electromagnetic responses; third, formation of Dark Epochs in the Universe history.

Magnetic black holes and monopoles in a nonminimal Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a cosmological constant: Exact solutions

Alternative theories of gravity and their solutions are of considerable importance since at some fundamental level the world can reveal new features. Indeed, it is suspected that the gravitational field might be nonminimally coupled to the other fields at scales not yet probed, bringing into the forefront nonminimally coupled theories. In this mode, we consider a nonminimal Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a cosmological constant. Imposing spherical symmetry and staticity for the spacetime and a magnetic Wu-Yang ansatz for the Yang-Mills field, we find expressions for the solutions of the theory. Further imposing constraints on the nonminimal parameters, we find a family of exact solutions of the theory depending on five parameters, namely, two nonminimal parameters, the cosmological constant, the magnetic charge, and the mass. These solutions represent magnetic monopoles and black holes in magnetic monopoles with de Sitter, Minkowskian, and anti-de Sitter asymptotics, depending on the sign and value of the cosmological constant $Λ$. We classify completely the family of solutions with respect to the number and the type of horizons and show that the spacetime solutions can have, at most, four horizons. For particular sets of the parameters, these horizons can become double, triple, and quadruple. For instance, for a positive cosmological constant $Λ$, there is a critical $Λ_c$ for which the solution admits a quadruple horizon, evocative of the $Λ_c$ that appears for a given energy density in both the Einstein static and Eddington-Lema\^ıtre dynamical universes. As an example of our classification, we analyze solutions in the Drummond-Hathrell nonminimal theory that describe nonminimal black holes. Another application is with a set of regular black holes previously treated.

Regular nonminimal magnetic black holes in spacetimes with a cosmological constant

We consider new regular exact spherically symmetric solutions of a nonminimal Einstein--Yang-Mills theory with a cosmological constant and a gauge field of magnetic Wu-Yang type. The most interesting solutions found are black holes with metric and curvature invariants that are regular everywhere, i.e., regular black holes. We set up a classification of the solutions according to the number and type of horizons. The structure of these regular black holes is characterized by four specific features: a small cavity in the neighborhood of the center, a repulsion barrier off the small cavity, a distant equilibrium point, in which the metric function has a minimum, and a region of Newtonian attraction. Depending on the sign and value of the cosmological constant the solutions are asymptotically de Sitter (dS), asymptotically flat, or asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS).

The Einstein-Maxwell-aether-axion theory: Dynamo-optical anomaly in the electromagnetic response

We consider a pp-wave symmetric model in the framework of the Einstein-Maxwell-aether-axion theory. Exact solutions to the equations of axion electrodynamics are obtained for the model, in which pseudoscalar, electric and magnetic fields were constant before the arrival of a gravitational pp-wave. We show that dynamo-optical interactions, i.e. couplings of the electromagnetic field to a dynamic unit vector field, attributed to the velocity of a cosmic substratum (aether, vacuum, dark fluid...), provide the response of axionically active electrodynamic system to display anomalous behavior.

Nonminimal black holes with regular electric field

We discuss the problem of identification of coupling constants, which describe interactions between photons and space-time curvature, using exact regular solutions to the extended equations of the nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell theory. We argue the idea that three nonminimal coupling constants in this theory can be reduced to the single guiding parameter, which plays the role of nonminimal radius. We base our consideration on two examples of exact solutions obtained earlier in our works: the first of them describes a nonminimal spherically symmetric object (star or black hole) with regular radial electric field; the second example represents a nonminimal Dirac-type object (monopole or black hole) with regular metric. We demonstrate that one of the inflexion points of the regular metric function identifies a specific nonminimal radius, thus marking the domain of dominance of nonminimal interactions.

Spin-axion coupling

We establish a new covariant phenomenological model, which describes an influence of pseudoscalar (axion) field on spins of test massive particles. The model includes general relativistic equations of particle motion and spin evolution in background pseudoscalar (axion), electromagnetic and gravitational fields. It describes both the direct spin-axion coupling of the gradient type and indirect spin-axion interaction mediated by electromagnetic fields. Special attention is paid to the direct spin-axion coupling caused by the gradient of the pseudoscalar (axion) field. We show that it describes a spin precession, when the pseudoscalar (axion) field is inhomogeneous and/or non-stationary. Applications of the model, which correspond to the three types of four-vectors attributed to the gradient of the pseudoscalar (axion) field (time-like, space-like, and null), are considered in detail. These are the spin precessions induced by relic cosmological axions, axions distributed around spherically symmetric static objects, and axions in a gravitational wave field, respectively. We discuss features of the obtained exact solutions and some general properties of the axionically induced spin rotation.

Anomalous character of the axion-photon coupling in a magnetic field distorted by a pp-wave gravitational background

We study the problem of axion-photon coupling in the magnetic field influenced by gravitational radiation. We focus on exact solutions to the equations for axion electrodynamics in the pp-wave gravitational background for two models with initially constant magnetic field. The first model describes the response of an initially constant magnetic field in a gravitational-wave vacuum with unit refraction index; the second model is characterized by a non-unit refraction index prescribed to the presence of ordinary and/or dark matter. We show that both models demonstrate anomalous behavior of the electromagnetic field generated by the axion-photon coupling in the presence of magnetic field, evolving in the gravitational wave background. The role of axionic dark matter in the formation of the anomalous response of this electrodynamic system is discussed.

Axion-induced oscillations of cooperative electric field in a cosmic magneto-active plasma

We consider one cosmological application of an axionic extension of the Maxwell-Vlasov theory, which describes axionically induced oscillatory regime in the state of global magnetic field evolving in the anisotropic expanding (early) universe. We show that the cooperative electric field in the relativistic plasma, being coupled to the pseudoscalar (axion) and global magnetic fields, plays the role of a regulator in this three-level system; in particular, the cooperative (Vlasov) electric field converts the regime of anomalous growth of the pseudoscalar field, caused by the axion-photon coupling at the inflationary epoch of the universe expansion, into an oscillatory regime with finite density of relic axions. We analyze solutions to the dispersion equations for the axionically induced cooperative oscillations of the electric field in the relativistic plasma.

Dark energy fingerprints in the nonminimal Wu-Yang wormhole structure

We discuss new exact solutions to nonminimally extended Einstein-Yang-Mills equations describing spherically symmetric static wormholes supported by the gauge field of the Wu-Yang type in a dark energy environment. We focus on the analysis of three types of exact solutions to the gravitational field equations. Solutions of the first type relate to the model, in which the dark energy is anisotropic, i.e., the radial and tangential pressures do not coincide. Solutions of the second type correspond to the isotropic pressure tensor; in particular, we discuss the exact solution, for which the dark energy is characterized by the equation of state for a string gas. Solutions of the third type describe the dark energy model with constant pressure and energy density. For the solutions of the third type, we consider in detail the problem of horizons and find constraints for the parameters of nonminimal coupling and for the constitutive parameters of the dark energy equation of state, which guarantee that the nonminimal wormholes are traversable.

Electrodynamic phenomena induced by a dark fluid: Analogs of pyromagnetic, piezoelectric, and striction effects

We establish a new model of coupling between a cosmic dark fluid and electrodynamic systems, based on an analogy with effects of electric and magnetic striction, piezo-electricity and piezo-magnetism, pyro-electricity and pyro-magnetism, which appear in classical electrodynamics of continuous media. Extended master equations for electromagnetic and gravitational fields are derived using Lagrange formalism. A cosmological application of the model is considered, and it is shown that a striction-type interaction between the dark energy (the main constituent of the dark fluid) and electrodynamic system provides the universe history to include the so-called unlighted epochs, during which electromagnetic waves can not propagate and thus can not scan the universe interior.

Extended axion electrodynamics: Anomalous dynamo-optical response induced by gravitational pp-waves

We extend the Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory including into the Lagrangian cross-terms of the dynamo-optical type, which are quadratic in the Maxwell tensor, linear in the covariant derivative of the macroscopic velocity four-vector, and linear in the pseudoscalar (axion) field or its gradient four-vector. We classify the new terms with respect to irreducible elements of the covariant derivative of the macroscopic velocity four-vector of the electromagnetically active medium: the expansion scalar, acceleration four-vector, shear and vorticity tensors. Master equations of the extended axion electrodynamics are used for the description of the response of an axionically active electrodynamic system, induced by a pp-wave gravitational background. We show that this response has a critical character, i.e., the electric and magnetic fields, dynamo-optically coupled to the axions, grow anomalously under the influence of the external pp-wave gravitational field.

Electromagnetic waves in an axion-active relativistic plasma non-minimally coupled to gravity

We consider cosmological applications of a new self-consistent system of equations, accounting for a nonminimal coupling of the gravitational, electromagnetic and pseudoscalar (axion) fields in a relativistic plasma. We focus on dispersion relations for electromagnetic perturbations in an initially isotropic ultrarelativistic plasma coupled to the gravitational and axion fields in the framework of isotropic homogeneous cosmological model of the de Sitter type. We classify the longitudinal and transversal electromagnetic modes in an axionically active plasma and distinguish between waves (damping, instable or running), and nonharmonic perturbations (damping or instable). We show that for the special choice of the guiding model parameters the transversal electromagnetic waves in the axionically active plasma, nonminimally coupled to gravity, can propagate with the phase velocity less than speed of light in vacuum, thus displaying a possibility for a new type of resonant particle-wave interactions.

Nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell-Vlasov-axion model

We establish a new self-consistent system of equations accounting for a nonminimal coupling of the cooperative gravitational, electromagnetic and pseudoscalar (axion) fields in a multi-component relativistic plasma. The axionic extension of the nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell-Vlasov theory is based on two consistent procedures. First, we use the Lagrange formalism to obtain nonminimal equations for the gravitational, electromagnetic and pseudoscalar fields with the additional sources generated in plasma. Second, we use the Vlasov version of the relativistic kinetic theory of the plasma, guided by the cooperative macroscopic electromagnetic, gravitational and axionic fields, to describe adequately the response of the plasma on the variations of these fields. In order to show the self-consistency of this approach we check directly the compatibility conditions for the master equations for the cooperative fields. Using these compatibility conditions we reconstruct the ponderomotive force, which acts on the plasma particles, and discuss the necessary conditions for existence of the distribution function of the equilibrium type.

Archimedean-type force in a cosmic dark fluid: III. Big Rip, Little Rip and Cyclic solutions

We analyze late-time evolution of the Universe in the framework of the self-consistent model, in which the dark matter is influenced by the Archimedean-type force proportional to the four-gradient of the dark energy pressure. The dark energy is considered as a fluid with the equation of state of the relaxation type, which takes into account a retardation of the dark energy response to the Universe accelerated expansion. The dark matter is guided by the Archimedean-type force, which redistributes the total energy of the dark fluid between two its constituents, dark energy and dark matter, in the course of the Universe accelerated expansion. We focus on the constraints for the dark energy relaxation time parameter, for the dark energy equation of state parameter, and for the Archimedean-type coupling constants, which guarantee the Big Rip avoidance. In particular, we show that the Archimedean-type coupling protects the Universe from the Big Rip scenario with asymptotically infinite negative dark energy pressure, and that the Little Rip is the fate of the Universe with the Archimedean-type interaction inside the dark fluid.

Gradient models of the axion-photon coupling

We establish an extended version of the Einstein - Maxwell - axion model by introducing into the Lagrangian cross-terms, which contain the gradient four-vector of the pseudoscalar (axion) field in convolution with the Maxwell tensor. The gradient model of the axion-photon coupling is applied to cosmology: we analyze the Bianchi-I type Universe with an initial magnetic field, electric field induced by the axion-photon interaction, cosmological constant and dark matter, which is described in terms of the pseudoscalar (axion) field. Analytical, qualitative and numerical results are presented in detail for two distinguished epochs: first, for the early Universe with magnetic field domination; second, for the stage of late-time accelerated expansion.

Light propagation with non-minimal couplings in a two-component cosmic dark fluid with an Archimedean-type force and unlighted cosmological epochs

During the evolution of the universe there are at least two epochs during which electromagnetic waves cannot scan the universe's internal structure neither bring information to outside observers. The first epoch is when photons are in local thermodynamic equilibrium with other particles, and the second is when photon scattering by charged particles is strong. One can call these two periods of cosmological time as standard unlighted epochs. After the last scattering surface, photons become relic photons and turn into a source of information about the universe. Unlighted cosmic epochs can also appear when one considers non-minimal theories, i.e., theories in which the electromagnetic field is coupled in an intricate way with the cosmological gravitational field. By considering a cosmological model where the dark sector, i.e., the dark energy and dark matter, self-interacts via an Archimedean-type force, and taking into account a non-minimal coupling theory for the electromagnetic field, we discuss the appearance of unlighted epochs. In the framework of our non-minimal theory, a three-parameter non-minimal Einstein-Maxwell model, the curvature coupling can be formulated in terms of an effective refraction index n(t). Then, taking advantage of a well-known classical analogy, namely, in a medium with n^2<0 electromagnetic waves do not propagate and their group velocity, i.e., energy transfer velocity, has zero value at the boundary of the corresponding zone, one can search for the unlighted epochs arising in the interacting dark fluid cosmological model. We study here, both analytically and numerically, cosmological models admitting unlighted epochs.

Archimedean-type force in a cosmic dark fluid: I. Exact solutions for the late-time accelerated expansion

We establish a new self-consistent model in order to explain from a unified viewpoint two key features of the cosmological evolution: the inflation in the early Universe and the late-time accelerated expansion. The key element of this new model is the Archimedean-type coupling of the dark matter with dark energy, which form the so-called cosmic dark fluid. We suppose that dark matter particles immersed into the dark energy reservoir are affected by the force proportional to the four-gradient of the dark energy pressure. The Archimedean-type coupling is shown to play a role of effective energy-momentum redistributor between the dark matter and the dark energy components of the dark fluid, thus providing the Universe's evolution to be a quasiperiodic and/or multistage process. In the first part of the work we discuss a theoretical base and new exact solutions of the model master equations. Special attention is focused on the exact solutions for which the scale factor is presented by the anti-Gaussian function: these solutions describe the late-time acceleration and are characterized by a nonsingular behavior in the early Universe. The second part contains qualitative and numerical analysis of the master equations; we focus there on the solutions describing a multi-inflationary Universe.

preprint2011arXiv

Archimedean-type force in a cosmic dark fluid: II. Qualitative and numerical study of a multistage Universe expansion

In this (second) part of the work we present the results of numerical and qualitative analysis, based on a new model of the Archimedean-type interaction between dark matter and dark energy. The Archimedean-type force is linear in the four-gradient of the dark energy pressure and plays a role of self-regulator of the energy redistribution in a cosmic dark fluid. Because of the Archimedean-type interaction the cosmological evolution is shown to have a multistage character. Depending on the choice of the values of the model guiding parameters, the Universe's expansion is shown to be perpetually accelerated, periodic or quasiperiodic with finite number of deceleration/acceleration epochs. We distinguished the models, which can be definitely characterized by the inflation in the early Universe, by the late-time accelerated expansion and nonsingular behavior in intermediate epochs, and classified them with respect to a number of transition points. Transition points appear, when the acceleration parameter changes the sign, providing the natural partition of the Universe's history into epochs of accelerated and decelerated expansion. The strategy and results of numerical calculations are advocated by the qualitative analysis of the instantaneous phase portraits of the dynamic system associated with the key equation for the dark energy pressure evolution.

Non-minimal coupling of photons and axions

We establish a new self-consistent system of equations accounting for a non-minimal interaction of gravitational, electromagnetic and axion fields. The procedure is based on a non-minimal extension of the standard Einstein-Maxwell-axion action. The general properties of a ten-parameter family of non-minimal linear models are discussed. We apply this theory to the models with pp-wave symmetry and consider propagation of electromagnetic waves non-minimally coupled to the gravitational and axion fields. We focus on exact solutions of electrodynamic equations, which describe quasi-minimal and non-minimal optical activity induced by the axion field. We also discuss empirical constraints on coupling parameters from astrophysical birefringence and polarization rotation observations.

Nonminimal coupling for the gravitational and electromagnetic fields: Traversable electric wormholes

We discuss new exact solutions of a three-parameter nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell model. The solutions describe static spherically symmetric objects with and without center, supported by an electric field nonminimally coupled to gravity. We focus on a unique one-parameter model, which admits an exact solution for a traversable electrically charged wormhole connecting two universes, one asymptotically flat the other asymptotically de Sitter ones. The relation between the asymptotic mass and charge of the wormhole and its throat radius is analyzed. The wormhole solution found is thus a nonminimal realization of the idea of Wheeler about charge without charge and shows that, if the world is somehow nonminimal in the coupling of gravity to electromagnetism, then wormhole appearance, or perhaps construction, is possible.

Anisotropic cosmological models with non-minimally coupled magnetic field

Motivated by the structure of one-loop vacuum polarization effects in curved spacetime we discuss a non-minimal extension of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. This formalism is applied to Bianchi I models with magnetic field. We obtain several exact solutions of the non-minimal system including those which describe an isotropization process. We show that there are inflationary solutions in which the cosmological constant is determined by the non-minimal coupling parameters. Furthermore, we find an isotropic de Sitter solution characterized by a "screening" of the magnetic field as a consequence of the non-minimal coupling.

Curvature force and dark energy

A curvature self-interaction of the cosmic gas is shown to mimic a cosmological constant or other forms of dark energy, such as a rolling tachyon condensate or a Chaplygin gas. Any given Hubble rate and deceleration parameter can be traced back to the action of an effective curvature force on the gas particles. This force self-consistently reacts back on the cosmological dynamics. The links between an imperfect fluid description, a kinetic description with effective antifriction forces, and curvature forces, which represent a non-minimal coupling of gravity to matter, are established.

Parametric phenomena of the particle dynamics in a periodic gravitational wave field

We establish exactly solvable models for the motion of neutral particles, electrically charged point and spin particles (U(1) symmetry), isospin particles (SU(2) symmetry), and particles with color charges (SU(3) symmetry) in a gravitational wave background. Special attention is devoted to parametric effects induced by the gravitational field. In particular, we discuss parametric instabilities of the particle motion and parametric oscillations of the vectors of spin, isospin, and color charge.

Self-interacting gas in a gravitational wave field

We investigate a relativistic self-interacting gas in the field of an external {\it pp} gravitational wave. Based on symmetry considerations we ask for those forces which are able to compensate the imprint of the gravitational wave on the macroscopic 4-acceleration of the gaseous fluid. We establish an exactly solvable toy model according to which the stationary states which characterize such a situation have negative entropy production and are accompanied by instabilities of the microscopic particle motion. These features are similar to those which one encounters in phenomena of self-organization in many-particle systems.

Conformal Symmetry and Cosmological Entropy Production

Introducing an effective refraction index of an isotropic cosmic medium, we investigate the cosmological fluid dynamics which is consistent with a conformal, timelike symmetry of a corresponding ``optical'' metric. We demonstrate that this kind of symmetry is compatible with the existence of a negative viscous pressure and, consequently, with cosmological entropy production. We establish an exactly solvable model according to which the viscous pressure is a consequence of a self-interacting one-particle force which is self-consistently exerted on the microscopic particles of a relativistic gas. Furthermore, we show that a sufficiently high decay rate of the refraction index of an ultrarelativistic cosmic medium results in an inflationary expansion of the universe.

We describe the ``deflationary'' evolution from an initial de Sitter phase to a subsequent Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) period as a specific non-equilibrium configuration of a self-interacting gas. The transition dynamics corresponds to a conformal, timelike symmetry of an ``optical'' metric, characterized by a refraction index of the cosmic medium which continously decreases from a very large initial value to unity in the FLRW phase.

We show that a relativistic gas may be at ``global'' equilibrium in the expanding universe for any equation of state $0 < p \leq ρ/3$, provided that the gas particles move under the influence of a self-interacting, effective one-particle force in between elastic binary collisions. In the force-free limit we recover the equilibrium conditions for ultrarelativistic matter which imply the existence of a conformal timelike Killing vector.
