A regularity method for lower bounds on the Lyapunov exponent for stochastic differential equations

We put forward a new method for obtaining quantitative lower bounds on the top Lyapunov exponent of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Our method combines (i) an (apparently new) identity connecting the top Lyapunov exponent to a Fisher information-like functional of the stationary density of the Markov process tracking tangent directions with (ii) a novel, quantitative version of Hörmander's hypoelliptic regularity theory in an $L^1$ framework which estimates this (degenerate) Fisher information from below by a $W^{s,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ Sobolev norm. This method is applicable to a wide range of systems beyond the reach of currently existing mathematically rigorous methods. As an initial application, we prove the positivity of the top Lyapunov exponent for a class of weakly-dissipative, weakly forced SDE; in this paper we prove that this class includes the Lorenz 96 model in any dimension, provided the additive stochastic driving is applied to any consecutive pair of modes.

Exponential mixing for random dynamical systems and an example of Pierrehumbert

We consider the question of exponential mixing for random dynamical systems on arbitrary compact manifolds without boundary. We put forward a robust, dynamics-based framework that allows us to construct space-time smooth, uniformly bounded in time, universal exponential mixers. The framework is then applied to the problem of proving exponential mixing in a classical example proposed by Pierrehumbert in 1994, consisting of alternating periodic shear flows with randomized phases. This settles a longstanding open problem on proving the existence of a space-time smooth (universal) exponentially mixing incompressible velocity field on a two-dimensional periodic domain while also providing a toolbox for constructing such smooth universal mixers in all dimensions.

On the norm equivalence of Lyapunov exponents for regularizing linear evolution equations

We consider the top Lyapunov exponent associated to a dissipative linear evolution equation posed on a separable Hilbert or Banach space. In many applications in partial differential equations, such equations are often posed on a scale of nonequivalent spaces mitigating, e.g., integrability ($L^p$) or differentiability ($W^{s, p}$). In contrast to finite dimensions, the Lyapunov exponent could apriori depend on the choice of norm used. In this paper we show that under quite general conditions, the Lyapunov exponent of a cocycle of compact linear operators is independent of the norm used. We apply this result to two important problems from fluid mechanics: the enhanced dissipation rate for the advection diffusion equation with ergodic velocity field; and the Lyapunov exponent for the 2d Navier-Stokes equations with stochastic or periodic forcing.

Diffusion limit for a slow-fast standard map

Consider the map $(x, y) \mapsto (x + ε^{-α} \sin (2πx) + ε^{-1-α}z, z + ε\sin(2πx))$, which is conjugate to the Chirikov standard map with a large parameter. The parameter value $α= 1$ is related to "scattering by resonance" phenomena. For suitable $α$, we obtain a central limit theorem for the slow variable $z$ for a (Lebesgue) random initial condition. The result is proved by conjugating to the Chirikov standard map and utilizing the formalism of standard pairs. Our techniques also yield for the Chirikov standard map a related limit theorem and a "finite-time" decay of correlations result.

Asymptotic periodicity in networks of degrade-and-fire oscillators

Networks of coupled degrade-and-fire (DF) oscillators are simple dynamical models of assemblies of interacting self-repressing genes. For mean-field interactions, which most mathematical studies have assumed so far, every trajectory must approach a periodic orbit. Moreover, asymptotic cluster distributions can be computed explicitly in terms of coupling intensity, and a massive collection of distributions collapses when this intensity passes a threshold. Here, we show that most of these dynamical features persist for an arbitrary coupling topology. In particular, we prove that, in any system of DF oscillators for which in and out coupling weights balance, trajectories with reasonable firing sequences must be asymptotically periodic, and periodic orbits are uniquely determined by their firing sequence. In addition to these structural results, illustrative examples are presented, for which the dynamics can be entirely described.

Entropy, volume growth and SRB measures for Banach space mappings

We consider $C^2$ Fréchet differentiable mappings of Banach spaces leaving invariant compactly supported Borel probability measures, and study the relation between entropy and volume growth for a natural notion of volume defined on finite dimensional subspaces. SRB measures are characterized as exactly those measures for which entropy is equal to volume growth on unstable manifolds, equivalently the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents of the map. In addition to numerous difficulties incurred by our infinite-dimensional setting, a crucial aspect to the proof is the technical point that the volume elements induced on unstable manifolds are regular enough to permit distortion control of iterated determinant functions. The results here generalize previously known results for diffeomorphisms of finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and are applicable to dynamical systems defined by large classes of dissipative parabolic PDEs.

Population Dynamics of Globally Coupled Degrade-and-Fire Oscillators

This paper reports the analysis of the dynamics of a model of pulse-coupled oscillators with global inhibitory coupling. The model is inspired by experiments on colonies of bacteria-embedded synthetic genetic circuits. The total population can be either of finite (arbitrary) size or infinite, and is represented by a one-dimensional profile. Profiles can be discontinuous, possibly with infinitely many jumps. Their time evolution is governed by a singular differential equation. We address the corresponding initial value problem and characterize the dynamics' main features. In particular, we prove that trajectory behaviors are asymptotically periodic, with period only depending on the profile (and on the model parameters). A criterion is obtained for the existence of the corresponding periodic orbits, which reveals the existence of a sharp transition as the coupling parameter is increased. The transition separates a regime where any profile can be obtained in the limit of large times, to a situation where only trajectories with sufficiently large groups of synchronized oscillators perdure.
