The variety of orthogonal frames

An orthogonal n-frame is an ordered set of n pairwise orthogonal vectors. The set of all orthogonal n-frames in a d-dimensional quadratic vector space is an algebraic variety V(d,n). In this paper, we investigate the variety V(d,n) as well as the quadratic ideal I(d,n) generated by the orthogonality relations, which cuts out V(d,n). We classify the irreducible components of V(d,n), give criteria for the ideal I(d,n) to be prime or a complete intersection, and for the variety V(d,n) to be normal. We also give near-equivalent conditions for V(d,n) to be factorial. Applications are given to the theory of Lovász-Saks-Schrijver ideals.

Syzygies in Hilbert schemes of complete intersections

Let $ e_1, ..., e_c $ be positive integers and let $ Y \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ be the monomial complete intersection defined by the vanishing of $x_1^{e_1}, ..., x_c^{e_c}$. In this paper we study sharp upper bounds on the number of equations and syzygies of subschemes parametrized by the Hilbert scheme of points $Hilb^d(Y)$, and discuss applications to the Hilbert scheme of points $Hilb^d(X)$ of arbitrary complete intersections $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$.

Edge ideals and DG algebra resolutions

Let $R= S/I$ where $S=k[T_1, \ldots, T_n]$ and $I$ is a homogeneous ideal in $S$. The acyclic closure $R \langle Y \rangle $ of $k$ over $R$ is a DG algebra resolution obtained by means of Tate's process of adjoining variables to kill cycles. In a similar way one can obtain the minimal model $S[X]$, a DG algebra resolution of $R$ over $S$. By a theorem of Avramov there is a tight connection between these two resolutions. In this paper we study these two resolutions when $I$ is the edge ideal of a path or a cycle. We determine the behavior of the deviations $\varepsilon_i(R)$, which are the number of variables in $R\langle Y \rangle$ in homological degree $i$. We apply our results to the study of the $k$-algebra structure of the Koszul homology of $R$.

On a conjecture of Wilf about the Frobenius number

Given coprime positive integers $a_1 < ...< a_d$, the Frobenius number $F$ is the largest integer which is not representable as a non-negative integer combination of the $a_i$. Let $g$ denote the number of all non-representable positive integers: Wilf conjectured that $d \geq \frac{F+1}{F+1-g}$. We prove that for every fixed value of $\lceil \frac{a_1}{d} \rceil$ the conjecture holds for all values of $a_1$ which are sufficiently large and are not divisible by a finite set of primes. We also propose a generalization in the context of one-dimensional local rings and a question on the equality $d = \frac{F+1}{F+1-g}$.

Classes of complete intersection numerical semigroups

We consider several classes of complete intersection numerical semigroups, aris- ing from many different contexts like algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, coding theory and factorization theory. In particular, we determine all the logical implications among these classes and provide examples. Most of these classes are shown to be well-behaved with respect to the operation of gluing.

When the associated graded ring of a semigroup ring is Complete Intersection

Let (R, m) be the semigroup ring associated to a numerical semigroup S. In this paper we study the property of its associated graded ring G(m) to be Complete Intersection. In particular, we introduce and characterise beta-rectangular and gamma-rectangular Apéry sets, which will be the fundamental concepts of the paper and will provide, respectively, a sufficient condition and a characterisation for G(m) to be Complete Intersection. Then we use these notions to give four equivalent conditions for G(m) in order to be Complete Intersection.

On the associated graded ring of a semigroup ring

Let (R;m) be a numerical semigroup ring. In this paper we study the properties of its associated graded ring G(m). In particular, we describe the H^0_M for G(m) (where M is the homogeneous maximal ideal of G(m)) and we characterize when G(m) is Buchsbaum. Furthermore, we find the length of H^0_M as a G(m)-module, when G(m) is Buchsbaum. In the 3-generated numerical semigroup case, we describe the H^0_M in term of the Apery set of the numerical semigroup associated to R. Finally, we improve two characterizations of the Cohen-Macaulayness and Gorensteinness of G(m) given in [2] and [3], respectively.
