Quantum Field Theory on Multifractal Spacetime: Varying Dimension and Ultraviolet Completeness

Inspired by various quantum gravity approaches, we explore quantum field theory where spacetime exhibits scaling properties and dimensional reduction with changing energy scales, effectively behaving as a multifractal manifold. Working within canonical quantization, we demonstrate how to properly quantize fields in such a multifractal spacetime. Our analysis reveals that a non-differentiable nature of spacetime is not merely compatible with quantum field theory but significantly enhances its mathematical foundation. Most notably, this approach ensures perturbative UV finiteness and improved behavior of the series expansion and enables rigorous construction of the S-matrix in the interaction picture by breaking vacuum translational invariance. The multifractal structure tames dominant, large-order divergence sources in the perturbative series and resolves the Landau pole problem through asymptotic safety, substantially improving the theory's behavior in the deep ultraviolet regime. Our formulation preserves all established predictions of standard quantum field theory at low energies while offering novel physical behaviors at high energy scales.

Parity from gauge symmetry

We argue that Left-Right parity symmetry $\mathcal{P}$ can arise as a discrete remnant of a unified gauge symmetry. The high-energy unification necessarily includes the gauging of the Lorentz symmetry, bringing into the game gravitational interactions, and leading to a gravi-GUT scheme. Parity emerges unbroken below the Planck scale, and can be broken spontaneously at lower energies making contact with the Standard Model. This framework motivates the spontaneous origin of parity violation as in Left-Right symmetric theories with $\mathcal{P}$. The possible unifying gauge groups are identified as SO(1,7) for gravitational and weak interactions, or SO(7,7) for a complete unification.

Kaon CP violation and neutron EDM in the minimal left-right symmetric model

Within the minimal Left-Right (LR) symmetric model we revisit the predictions for the kaon CP violating observables $\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon'$ in correlation with the neutron electric dipole moment. We perform a complete study of the cross constraints on the model parameters, phases and the $M_{W_R}$ scale, considering the two cases of extended parity or charge conjugation as LR discrete symmetries, together with the possible presence of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. We discuss in particular two scenarios: whether the Standard Model saturates the experimental value of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ or whether new physics is needed, still an open issue after the recent lattice results on the QCD penguin matrix elements. Within the first scenario, we find no constraints on the LR scale in the charge-conjugation case while in the parity case we show that $M_{W_R}$ can be as low as 13 TeV. On the other side, the request that new physics contributes dominantly to $\varepsilon'$ implies strong correlations among the model parameters, with an upper bound of $M_{W_R}< 8-100$ TeV depending on $\tanβ$ in the case of charge conjugation and a range of $M_{W_R}\simeq 7-45$ TeV in the parity setup. Both scenarios may be probed directly at future colliders and only indirectly at the LHC.

Non-Wilsonian ultraviolet completion via transseries

We study some of the implications for the perturbative renormalization program when augmented with the Borel-Ecalle resummation. We show the emergence of a new kind of non-perturbative fixed point for the scalar $ϕ^4$ model, representing an ultraviolet self-completion by transseries. We argue that this completion is purely non-Wilsonian and it depends on one arbitrary constant stemming from the transseries solution of the renormalization group equation. On the other hand, if no fixed points are demanded through the adjustment of this arbitrary constant, we end up with an effective theory in which the scalar mass is quadratically-sensitive to the cut-off, even working in dimensional regularization. Complete decoupling of the scalar mass to this energy scale can be used to determine a physical prescription for the Borel-Laplace resummation of the renormalons in non-asymptotically free models. We also comment on possible orthogonal scenarios available in the literature that might play a role when no fixed points exist.

Resurgence of the Renormalization Group Equation

We show how the renormalons emerge from the renormalization group equation with a priori no reference to any Feynman diagrams. The proof is rather given by recasting the renormalization group equation as a resurgent equation studied in the mathematical literature, which describes a function with an infinite number of singularities in the positive axis of the Borel plane. Consistency requires a one-to-one correspondence between the existence of such kind of equation and the actual (generalized) Borel resummation of the renormalons through a one-parameter transseries. Our finding suggests how non-perturbative contributions can affect the running couplings. We also discuss these concepts within the context of gauge theories, making use of the large number of flavor expansion.

New physics in ε' from chromomagnetic contributions and limits on Left-Right symmetry

New physics in the chromomagnetic flavor changing transition s->dg* can avoid the strong GIM suppression of the Standard Model and lead to large contributions to CP-violating observables, in particular to the epsilon' parameter, that we address here. We discuss the case of the Left-Right symmetric models, where this contribution implies bounds on the phases of the right-handed quark mixing matrix, or in generic models with large phases a strong bound on the Left-Right symmetry scale. To the leading order, a numeric formula for epsilon' as a function of the short-distance coefficients for a wide class of models of new physics is given.

Perturbativity and mass scales of Left-Right Higgs bosons

The scalar sector of the minimal Left-Right model at TeV scale is revisited in light of the large quartic coupling needed for a heavy flavor-changing scalar. The stability and perturbativity of the effective potential is discussed and merged with constraints from low-energy processes. Thus the perturbative level of the Left-Right scale is sharpened. Lower limits on the triplet scalars are also derived: the left-handed triplet is bounded by oblique parameters, while the doubly-charged right-handed component is limited by the $h \to γγ, Z γ$ decays. Current constraints disfavor their detection as long as $W_R$ is within the reach of the LHC.

Lepton Number Violation in Higgs Decay at LHC

We show that within the Left-Right symmetric model, lepton number violating decays of the Higgs boson can be discovered at the LHC. The process is due to the mixing of the Higgs with the triplet that breaks parity. As a result, the Higgs can act as a gateway to the origin of heavy Majorana neutrino mass. To assess the LHC reach, a detailed collider study of the same-sign di-leptons plus jets channel is provided. This process is complementary to the existing nuclear and collider searches for lepton number violation and can probe the scale of parity restoration even beyond other direct searches.

Present and Future K and B Meson Mixing Constraints on TeV Scale Left-Right Symmetry

We revisit the $ΔF=2$ transitions in the $K$ and $B_{d,s}$ neutral meson systems in the context of the minimal Left-Right symmetric model. We take into account, in addition to up-to-date phenomenological data, the contributions related to the renormalization of the flavor-changing neutral Higgs tree-level amplitude. These contributions were neglected in recent discussions, albeit formally needed in order to obtain a gauge independent result. Their impact on the minimal LR model is crucial and twofold. First, the effects are relevant in $B$ meson oscillations, for both CP conserving and CP violating observables, so that for the first time these imply constraints on the LR scenario which compete with those of the $K$ sector (plagued by long-distance uncertainties). Second, they sizably contribute to the indirect kaon CP violation parameter $\varepsilon$. We discuss the bounds from $B$ and $K$ mesons in both cases of LR symmetry: generalized parity ($\mathcal P$) and charge conjugation ($\mathcal C$). In the case of $\mathcal P$, the interplay between the CP-violation parameters $\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon'$ leads us to rule out the regime of very hierarchical bidoublet vacuum expectation values $v_2/v_1<m_b/m_t\simeq 0.02$. In general, by minimizing the scalar field contribution up to the limit of the perturbative regime and by definite values of the relevant CP phases in the charged right-handed currents, we find that a right-handed gauge boson $W_R$ as light as 3 TeV is allowed at the 95% CL. This is well within the reach of direct detection at the next LHC run. If not discovered, within a decade the upgraded LHCb and Super B factories may reach an indirect sensitivity to a Left-Right scale of 8 TeV.

Strong P invariance, neutron EDM and minimal Left-Right parity at LHC

In the minimal Left-Right model the choice of left-right symmetry is twofold: either generalized parity $\mathcal P$ or charge conjugation $\mathcal C$. In the minimal model with spontaneously broken strict $\mathcal P$, a large tree-level contribution to strong CP violation can be computed in terms of the spontaneous phase $α$. Searches for the neutron electric dipole moments then constrain the size of $α$. Following the latest update on indirect CP violation in the kaon sector, a bound on $W_R$ mass at $20 \text{TeV}$ is set. Possible ways out of this bound, either by an additional relaxation mechanism or explicit breaking of $\mathcal P$ are considered. To this end, the chiral loop of the neutron electric dipole moment at next-to-leading order is re-computed and provides an estimate of the weak contribution. Combining this constraint with other CP violating observables in the kaon sector allows for $M_{W_R} \gtrsim 3 \text{TeV}$. On the other hand, $\mathcal C$-symmetry is free from such constraints, leaving the right-handed scale within the experimental reach.

K to ππ hadronic matrix elements of left-right current-current operators

Effective ΔS=1 four fermion operators involving left- and right-handed currents are relevant in left-right gauge extensions of the standard model and scalar extension of the Yukawa sector. They induce K to ππ decays which are strictly constrained by experimental data, typically resulting in strong bounds on the new physics scales or parameters. We evaluate the K to ππ hadronic matrix elements of such operators within the phenomenological framework of the Chiral Quark Model. The results are consistent with the estimates used in a previous work on TeV scale left-right symmetry, thus confirming the conclusions obtained there.

Left-Right Symmetry at LHC

We revisit the issue of the limit on the scale of Left-Right symmetry breaking. We focus on the minimal SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_B-L gauge theory with the seesaw mechanism and discuss the two possibilities of defining Left-Right symmetry as parity or charge conjugation. In the commonly adopted case of parity, we perform a complete numerical study of the quark mass matrices and the associated left and right mixing matrices without any assumptions usually made in the literature about the ratio of vacuum expectation values. We find that the usual lower limit on the mass of the right-handed gauge boson from the K mass difference, M_WR>2.5TeV, is subject to a possible small reduction due to the difference between right and left Cabibbo angles. In the case of charge conjugation the limit on M_WR is somewhat more robust. However, the more severe bounds from CP-violating observables are absent in this case. In fact, the free phases can also resolve the present mild discrepancy between the Standard Model and CP-violation in the $B$-sector. Thus, even in the minimal case, both charged and neutral gauge bosons may be accessible at the Large Hadron Collider with spectacular signatures of lepton number violation.
