Blowdown of hydrocarbons pressure vessel with partial phase separation

We propose a model for the simulation of the blowdown of vessels containing two-phase (gas-liquid) hydrocarbon fluids, considering non equilibrium between phases. Two phases may be present either already at the beginning of the blowdown process (for instance in gas-liquid separators) or as the liquid is formed from flashing of the vapor due to the cooling induced by pressure decrease. There is experimental evidence that the assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium is not appropriate, since the two phases show an independent temperature evolution. Thus, due to the greater heat transfer between the liquid phase with the wall, the wall in contact with the liquid experiences a stronger cooling than the wall in contact with the gas, during the blowdown. As a consequence, the vessel should be designed for a lower temperature than if it was supposed to contain vapor only. Our model is based on a compositional approach, and it takes into account internal heat and mass transfer processes, as well as heat transfer with the vessel wall and the external environment. Numerical simulations show a generally good agreement with experimental measurements.

Glow discharge in low pressure plasma PVD: mathematical model and numerical simulations

In this paper we analyze the problem of glow discharge in low pressure plasma in industrial plant, for chambers of different shapes and various working parameters, like pressure and electric potential. The model described is based upon a static approximation of the AC configuration with two electrodes and a drift diffusion approximation for the current density of positive ions and electrons. A detailed discussion of the boundary conditions imposed is given, as well as the full description of the mathematical model. Numerical simulations were performed for a simple 1D model and two different 2D models, corresponding to two different settings of the industrial plant. The simpler case consists of a radially symmetric chamber, with one central electrode (cathode), based upon a DC generator. In this case, the steel chamber acts as the anode. The second model concerns a two dimensional horizontal cut of the most common plant configuration, with two electrodes connected to an AC generator. The case is treated in a "quasi-static" approximation. The three models show some common behaviours, particularly including the main expected features, such as dark spaces, glow regions and a wide "plasma region". Furthermore, the three shown models show some similarities with previously published results concerning 1D and simplified 2D models, as well as with some preliminary results of the full 3D case.

Phase equilibria of polydisperse hydrocarbons: moment free energy method analysis

We analyze the phase equilibria of systems of polydisperse hydrocarbons by means of the recently introduced moment method. Hydrocarbons are modelled with the Soave-Redlick-Kwong and Peng-Robinson equations of states. Numerical results show no particular qualitative difference between the two equations of states. Furthermore, in general the moment method proves to be an excellent method for solving phase equilibria of polydisperse systems, showing excellent agreement with previous results and allowing a great improvement in generality of the numerical scheme and speed of computation.

Suspension Flows in a Pipeline with Partial Phase Separation

The formulation of a model for the evolution of the flow of a solid-liquid mixture (coal-water) in a horizontal pipeline with partial phase separation is the aim of this work. Problems of instabilities due to complex eigenvalues, observed in previous models, seem to be completely solved in the present model, in which we give the genesis of the different terms written in the equations, coming from the natural definition of mass and momentum balance, and the consequent proof of well-posedness of the obtained PDE system with boundary-Cauchy data. The model describes a three-layer flow. Most of the material is carried by the upper layer, while the bottom layer consists of an immobile sediment. The intermediate layer grows to a maximum thickness and has the role of regulating the mass exchange between the extreme layers. In the last section we present some simulations for a particular choice of flow regime, and boundary-Cauchy data, that were suggested by experimental results provided by Snamprogetti (Fano, Italy).

Isotropic-nematic phase equilibria in the Onsager theory of hard rods with length polydispersity

We analyse the effect of a continuous spread of particle lengths on the phase behavior of rodlike particles, using the Onsager theory of hard rods. Our aim is to establish whether ``unusual'' effects such as isotropic-nematic-nematic (I-N-N) phase separation can occur even for length distributions with a single peak. We focus on the onset of I-N coexistence. For a log-normal distribution we find that a finite upper cutoff on rod lengths is required to make this problem well-posed. The cloud curve, which tracks the density at the onset of I-N coexistence as a function of the width of the length distribution, exhibits a kink; this demonstrates that the phase diagram must contain a three-phase I-N-N region. Theoretical analysis shows that in the limit of large cutoff the cloud point density actually converges to zero, so that phase separation results at any nonzero density; this conclusion applies to all length distributions with fatter-than-exponentail tails. Finally we consider the case of a Schulz distribution, with its exponential tail. Surprisingly, even here the long rods (and hence the cutoff) can dominate the phase behaviour, and a kink in the cloud curve and I-N-N coexistence again result. Theory establishes that there is a nonzero threshold for the width of the length distribution above which these long rod effects occur, and shows that the cloud and shadow curves approach nonzero limits for large cutoff, both in good agreement with the numerical results.

Simplified Onsager theory for isotropic-nematic phase equilibria of length polydisperse hard rods

Polydispersity is believed to have important effects on the formation of liquid crystal phases in suspensions of rod-like particles. To understand such effects, we analyse the phase behaviour of thin hard rods with length polydispersity. Our treatment is based on a simplified Onsager theory, obtained by truncating the series expansion of the angular dependence of the excluded volume. We describe the model and give the full phase equilibrium equations; these are then solved numerically using the moment free energy method which reduces the problem from one with an infinite number of conserved densities to one with a finite number of effective densities that are moments of the full density distribution. The method yields exactly the onset of nematic ordering. Beyond this, results are approximate but we show that they can be made essentially arbitrarily precise by adding adaptively chosen extra moments, while still avoiding the numerical complications of a direct solution of the full phase equilibrium conditions. We investigate in detail the phase behaviour of systems with three different length distributions: a (unimodal) Schulz distribution, a bidisperse distribution and a bimodal mixture of two Schulz distributions which interpolates between these two cases. A three-phase isotropic-nematic-nematic coexistence region is shown to exist for the bimodal and bidisperse length distributions if the ratio of long and short rod lengths is sufficiently large, but not for the unimodal one. We systematically explore the topology of the phase diagram as a function of the width of the length distribution and of the rod length ratio in the bidisperse and bimodal cases.
