Towards leading-twist $T$-odd TMD gluon distributions

We present exploratory studies of the 3D proton tomography through polarized $T$-odd gluon TMDs at leading twist, obtained in a spectator-model framework. We embody in our approach a flexible parameterization for the spectator-mass spectral function, suited to catch both small- and moderate-$x$ effects. All these studies are relevant to unveil the gluon dynamics inside hadrons, which represents a core research line of studies at new-generation colliders, such as the Electron-Ion Collider, NICA-SPD, the High-Luminosity LHC, and the Forward Physics Facility.

A spectator-model way to transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distribution functions

We present exploratory analyses of the 3D gluon content of the proton via a study of unpolarized and polarized gluon TMDs at twist-2, calculated in a spectator model for the parent nucleon. Our approach embodies a flexible parametrization for the spectator-mass function, suited to describe both moderate and small-$x$ effects. All these studies can serve as a useful guidance in the investigation of the gluon dynamics inside nucleons and nuclei, which constitutes one of the major goals of new-generation colliding machines, as the EIC, the HL-LHC, NICA, and the FPF.

Toward twist-2 $T$-odd transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distributions: the $f$-type linearity function

We present preliminary results on the leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon linearity function, which is directly connected to nucleon transverse-spin asymmetries originating from the density of linearly-polarized gluons. The function is calculated in a spectator-model framework for the parent proton and for the $f$-type gauge-link structure. Our work represents a further step toward the definition of a complete set of gluon TMD distributions at twist-2 that can be used to access the gluon dynamics inside nucleons and nuclei at new-generation colliders.

Toward twist-2 $T$-odd transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distributions: the $f$-type Sivers function

We report progresses on leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions, calculated in a spectator-model framework for the parent nucleon. We encode in our formalism a fit-based parameterization for the spectator-mass density, suited to describe the gluon content of the proton in a wide range of $x$. We present preliminary results on the $f$-type Sivers function, a key ingredient to access relevant spin-asymmetries emerging when the nucleon is transversely polarized. These studies are helpful to shed light on the gluon dynamics inside nucleons and nuclei, which is one of the primary goals of new-generation colliding facilities, as the Electron-Ion Collider, the High-Luminosity LHC, NICA-SPD, and the Forward Physics Facility.

Unveiling the proton structure via transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distributions

We present exploratory studies of the proton content via unpolarized and polarized transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distributions in the proton at leading twist. We make use of an enhanced spectator-model approach to encode in our densities both small- and moderate-$x$ effects. These studies are relevant to the investigation of the inner structure of hadrons via tomographic analyses at new-generation colliding machines.

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions up to N$^3$LL from Drell-Yan data

We present an extraction of unpolarised Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions based on Drell-Yan production data from different experiments, including those at the LHC, and spanning a wide kinematic range. We deal with experimental uncertainties by properly taking into account correlations. We include resummation of logarithms of the transverse momentum of the vector boson up to N$^3$LL order, and we include non-perturbative contributions. These ingredients allow us to obtain a remarkable agreement with the data.

Exploring universality of transversity in proton-proton collisions

We consider the azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs with large total transverse momentum and small relative momentum, produced in proton-proton collisions with one transversely polarized proton. One of these correlations directly probes the chiral-odd transversity parton distribution in connection with a chiral-odd interference fragmentation function. We present predictions for this observable based on previous extractions of transversity (from charged pion pair production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering) and of the interference fragmentation function (from the production of back-to-back charged pion pairs in electron-positron annihilations). All analyses are performed in the framework of collinear factorization. We compare our predictions to the recent data on proton-proton collisions released by the STAR collaboration at RHIC, and we find them reasonably compatible. This comparison confirms for the first time the predicted role of transversity in proton-proton collisions and it allows to test its universality.

Revisiting the equivalence of light-front and covariant QED in the light-cone gauge

We discuss the equivalence between light-front time-ordered-perturbation theory and covariant quantum field theory in light-front quantization, in the case of quantum electrodynamics at one-loop level. In particular, we review the one-loop calculation of the vertex correction, fermion self-energy and vacuum polarization. We apply the procedure of integration by residue over the light-front energy in the loop to show how the perturbative expansion in covariant terms can be reduced to a sum of propagating and instantaneous diagrams of light-front time-ordered perturbation theory. The detailed proof of equivalence between the two formulations of the theory resolves the controversial question on which form should be used for the gauge-field propagator in the light-cone gauge in the covariant approach.

Effects of TMD evolution and partonic flavor on $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons

We calculate the transverse momentum dependence in the production of two back-to-back hadrons in electron-positron annihilations at the medium/large energy scales of BES-III and BELLE experiments. We use the parameters of the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions that were recently extracted from the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering multiplicities at low energy from HERMES. TMD evolution is applied according to different approaches and using different parameters for the nonperturbative part of the evolution kernel, thus exploring the sensitivity of our results to these different choices and to the flavor dependence of parton fragmentation functions. We discuss how experimental measurements could discriminate among the various scenarios.

Realistic estimate of valence transversity distributions from inclusive dihadron production

We present an updated extraction of the transversity parton distribution based on the analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets in collinear factorization. Data for proton and deuteron targets make it possible to perform a flavor separation of the valence components of the transversity distribution, using di-hadron fragmentation functions taken from the semi-inclusive production of two pion pairs in back-to-back jets in e+e- annihilation. The e+e- data from Belle have been reanalyzed using the replica method and a more realistic estimate of the uncertainties on the chiral-odd interference fragmentation function has been obtained. Then, the transversity distribution has been extracted by using the most recent and more precise COMPASS data for deep-inelastic scattering off proton targets. Our results represent the most accurate estimate of the uncertainties on the valence components of the transversity distribution currently available.

The electron in three-dimensional momentum space

We study the electron as a system composed by an electron and a photon, using lowest order perturbation theory. We derive the leading-twist transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions for both the electron and photon in the dressed electron, thereby offering a three-dimensional description of the dressed electron in momentum space. To obtain the distribution functions, we apply both the formalism of light-front wave function overlap representation and the diagrammatic approach. We perform the calculations both in light-cone gauge and Feynman gauge, and we present a detailed discussion of the role of the Wilson lines to obtain gauge-independent results. We provide numerical results and plots for many of the computed distributions.

Dihadron Fragmentation Functions and Transversity

We present preliminary results for an updated extraction of the transversity parton distribution based on the analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets in collinear factorization. Data for proton and deuteron targets by HERMES and COMPASS allow for a flavor separation of the valence components of transversity, while di-hadron fragmentation functions are taken from the semi-inclusive production of two pion pairs in back-to-back jets in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation. The latter data from Belle have been reanalyzed using the replica method and a more realistic estimate of the uncertainties on the chiral-odd interference fragmentation function has been obtained. After encoding this piece of information into the deep-inelastic scattering cross section, the transversity has been re-extracted by using the most recent and more precise COMPASS data for proton target. This picture represents the current most realistic estimate of the uncertainties on our knowledge of transversity. The preliminary results indicate that the valence up component seems smaller and with a narrower error band than in previous extraction.

Phenomenology from SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ multiplicities

This study is part of a project to investigate the transverse momentum dependence in parton distribution and fragmentation functions, analyzing (semi-)inclusive high-energy processes within a proper QCD framework. We calculate the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) multiplicities for $e^+e^-$ annihilation into two hadrons (considering different combinations of pions and kaons) aiming to investigate the impact of intrinsic and radiative partonic transverse momentum and their mixing with flavor. Different descriptions of the non-perturbative evolution kernel are available on the market and there are 200 sets of flavor configurations for the unpolarized TMD fragmentation functions (FFs) resulting from a Monte Carlo fit of Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) data at Hermes. We build our predictions of $e^+e^-$ multiplicities relying on this rich phenomenology. The comparison of these calculations with future experimental data (from Belle and Babar collaborations) will shed light on non-perturbative aspects of hadron structure, opening important insights into the physics of spin, flavor and momentum structure of hadrons.

Phenomenology of unpolarized TMDs from Semi-Inclusive DIS data

We discuss the dependence on the flavor of the intrinsic transverse momentum in unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions (TMD PDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMD FFs) analyzing data of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) released by the HERMES collaboration. Adopting a flavor-dependent Gaussian model in the transverse momentum and neglecting QCD evolution, we find interesting evidences concerning the flavor dependence in TMD FFs, whereas the indications are weaker in TMD PDFs and deserve further investigations. Inclusions of new data sets of SIDIS, electron-positron annihilations and and Drell-Yan (DY) events require a proper treatment of QCD evolution. We try to get constraints on the non-perturbative Sudakov factor from electron-positron annihilations into hadrons.

Detecting correlated di-hadron pairs: about the extraction of transversity and beyond

We summarize the latest achievements about the extraction of the transversity parton distribution and proton tensor charge based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets. Recently released data for proton and deuteron targets by HERMES and COMPASS allow for a flavor separation of the valence components of transversity. At variance with the Collins effect, this extraction is performed in the framework of collinear factorization and relies on di-hadron fragmentation functions. The latter have been taken from the first recent analysis of the semi-inclusive production of two pion pairs in back-to-back jets in e+e- annihilation. We also comment on the possibility of isolating new azimuthally asymmetric correlations of opposite pion pairs, which could arise when a fragmenting quark crosses parity-odd domains localized in Minkowski space-time and induced by the topologically nontrivial QCD background (the so-called θ vacuum).

Evolution of the helicity and transversity Transverse-Momentum-Dependent parton distributions

We examine the QCD evolution of the helicity and transversity parton distribution functions when including also their dependence on transverse momentum. Using an appropriate definition of these polarized transverse momentum distributions (TMDs), we describe their dependence on the factorization scale and rapidity cutoff, which is essential for phenomenological applications.

Flavor dependence of unpolarized TMDs from semi-inclusive pion production

Recent data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering collected by the HERMES collaboration allow for the first time to discuss how the transverse-momentum dependence of unpolarized distribution and fragmentation functions is affected by the flavor of the involved partons. A model built with flavor-dependent Gaussian transverse-momentum distributions fits data better than the same flavor-independent model. The current analysis is performed for totally unpolarized scattering of leptons off protons and deuterons, with detected pions in the final state. There are convincing indications of flavor dependence in the fragmentation functions, while for parton distribution functions the evidence is weaker.

preprint2013arXiv

Investigations into the flavor dependence of partonic transverse momentum

Recent experimental data on semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from the HERMES collaboration allow us to discuss for the first time the flavor dependence of unpolarized transverse-momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions. We find convincing indications that favored fragmentation functions into pions have smaller average transverse momentum than unfavored functions and fragmentation functions into kaons. We find weaker indications of flavor dependence in the distribution functions.

Valence transversities: the collinear extraction

In these proceedings, we propose an extraction of the valence transversity parton distributions. Based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets, this extraction of transversity is performed in the framework of collinear factorization. The recently released data for proton and deuteron targets at HERMES and COMPASS allow for a flavor separation of the valence transversities, for which we give a complete statistical study.

Constraining quark angular momentum through semi-inclusive measurements

The determination of quark angular momentum requires the knowledge of the generalized parton distribution E in the forward limit. We assume a connection between this function and the Sivers transverse-momentum distribution, based on model calculations and theoretical considerations. Using this assumption, we show that it is possible to fit at the same time nucleon magnetic moments and semi-inclusive single-spin asymmetries. This imposes additional constraints on the Sivers function and opens a plausible way to quantifying quark angular momentum.

First extraction of valence transversities in a collinear framework

We present an extraction of the valence transversity parton distributions based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets. Recently released data for proton and deuteron targets at HERMES and COMPASS permit a flavor separation of valence transversities. The present extraction is performed in the framework of collinear factorization, where dihadron fragmentation functions are involved. The latter are taken from a previous analysis of electron-positron annihilation measurements.

Quark angular momentum and the Sivers asymmetry

The determination of quark angular momentum requires the knowledge of the generalized parton distribution $E$ in the forward limit. We assume a connection between this function and the Sivers transverse-momentum distribution, based on model calculations and theoretical considerations. Using this assumption, we show that it is possible to fit at the same time nucleon anomalous magnetic moments and semi-inclusive single-spin asymmetries. This imposes additional constraints on the Sivers function and opens a plausible way to quantifying the quark angular momentum.

First glances at the transversity parton distribution through dihadron fragmentation functions

We present first observations of the transversity parton distribution based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets. The extraction of transversity relies on the knowledge of dihadron fragmentation functions, which we take from electron-positron annihilation measurements. This is the first attempt to determine the transversity distribution in the framework of collinear factorization.

The Dihadron fragmentation functions way to Transversity

Observations of the transversity parton distribution based on an analysis of pion-pair production in deep inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets are presented. This extraction relies on the knowledge of dihadron fragmentation functions, which are obtained from electron-positron annihilation measurements. This is the first attempt to determine the transversity distribution in the framework of collinear factorization.

A method for tuning parameters of Monte Carlo generators and a its application to the determination of the unintegrated gluon density

A method for tuning parameters in Monte Carlo generators is described and applied to a specific case. The method works in the following way: each observable is generated several times using different values of the parameters to be tuned. The output is then approximated by some analytic form to describe the dependence of the observables on the parameters. This approximation is used to find the values of the parameter that give the best description of the experimental data. This results in significantly faster fitting compared to an approach in which the generator is called iteratively. As an application, we employ this method to fit the parameters of the unintegrated gluon density used in the CASCADE Monte Carlo generator, using inclusive deep inelastic data measured by the H1 Collaboration. We discuss the results of the fit, its limitations, and its strong points.

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs)

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) provide three-dimensional images of the partonic structure of the nucleon in momentum space. We made impressive progress in understanding TMDs, both from the theoretical and experimental point of view. This brief overview on TMDs is divided in two parts: in the first, an essential list of achievements is presented. In the second, a selection of open questions is discussed.

Weighted azimuthal asymmetries in a diquark spectator model

We analytically calculate weighted azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan processes, using transverse-momentum-dependent partonic densities obtained in a diquark spectator model. We compare the asymmetries with available preliminary experimental data, in particular for the Collins and the Sivers effect. We make predictions for other cases of interest in running and planned experiments.

What can break the Wandzura--Wilczek relation?

We analyze the breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the g_2 structure function, emphasizing its connection with transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. We find that the relation is broken by two distinct twist-3 terms, and clarify how these can be separated in measurements of double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. Through a quantitative analysis of available g_2 data we also show that the breaking of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation can be as large as 15-30% of the size of g_2.

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at small transverse momentum

We study the cross section for one-particle inclusive deep inelastic scattering off the nucleon for low transverse momentum of the detected hadron. We decompose the cross section in terms of structure functions and calculate them at tree level in terms of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Our results are complete in the one-photon exchange approximation at leading and first subleading twist accuracy, with both beam and target polarization.

Dihadron interference fragmentation functions in proton-proton collisions

We study the production of hadron pairs in proton-proton collisions, selecting pairs with large total transverse momentum with respect to the beam, and small relative transverse momentum, i.e., belonging to a single jet with large transverse momentum. We describe the process in terms of dihadron fragmentation functions. We consider the production of one pair in polarized collisions (with one transversely polarized proton) and the production of two pairs in unpolarized collisions. In the first case, we discuss how to observe the quark transversity distribution in connection with a specific class of dihadron fragmentation functions, named interference fragmentation functions. In the second case, we suggest how to determine the latter and also how to observe linearly polarized gluons.

Collins fragmentation function from gluon rescattering

We estimate the Collins fragmentation function by introducing the effect of gluon rescattering in a model calculation of the fragmentation process. We include all necessary diagrams to the one-loop level and compute the nontrivial phases giving rise to the Collins function. We compare our results to the ones obtained from pion rescattering. We conclude that three out of four one-loop diagrams give sizeable contributions to the Collins function, and that the effect of gluon rescattering has a magnitude comparable to that of pion rescattering, but has opposite sign.

Sivers function in a spectator model with axial-vector diquarks

We perform a calculation of the Sivers function in a spectator model of the nucleon, with scalar and axial-vector diquarks. We make use of gluon rescattering to produce the nontrivial phases necessary to generate the Sivers function. The inclusion of axial-vector diquarks enables us to obtain a nonzero Sivers function for down quarks. Using the results of our model, we discuss the phenomenology of transvere single spin asymmetries in pi+, pi-, and pi0 production, which are currently analysed by the HERMES and COMPASS collaborations. We find that the inclusion of axial-vector diquarks substantially reduces the asymmetries.
