Gravitational waves from a dilaton-induced, first-order QCD phase transition

We show that a `QCD dilaton' field, whose vacuum expectation value sets the strong coupling, can render the Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) confinement transition first-order. The QCD dilaton is cosmologically attracted to a false vacuum at weak coupling in the early universe. Quantum tunnelling towards the true vacuum triggers prompt chiral symmetry breaking and confinement of QCD, leading to detonating bubbles of the hadronic phase. We find that plasma sound waves produced by this dilaton-induced, first-order QCD phase transition generate a stochastic gravitational wave signal strikingly similar to the recently detected gravitational wave background from Pulsar Timing Arrays. We briefly comment on how this theory can be probed through collider experiments and cosmology.

Real-time dynamics of false vacuum decay

We investigate false vacuum decay of a relativistic scalar field initialized in the metastable minimum of an asymmetric double-well potential. The transition to the true ground state is a well-defined initial-value problem in real time, which can be formulated in nonequilibrium quantum field theory on a closed time path. We employ the non-perturbative framework of the two-particle irreducible (2PI) quantum effective action at next-to-leading order in a large-N expansion. We also compare to classical-statistical field theory simulations on a lattice in the high-temperature regime. By this, we demonstrate that the real-time decay rates are comparable to those obtained from the conventional Euclidean (bounce) approach. In general, we find that the decay rates are time dependent. For a more comprehensive description of the dynamics, we extract a time-dependent effective potential, which becomes convex during the nonequilibrium transition process. By solving the quantum evolution equations for the one- and two-point correlation functions for vacuum initial conditions, we demonstrate that quantum corrections can lead to transitions that are not captured by classical-statistical approximations.

Gravitational waves from the fragmentation of axion-like particle dark matter

The misalignment mechanism allows for the efficient, and usually very cold, production of light scalar bosons, such as axion-like particles (ALPs), making them an appealing dark matter candidate. However, in certain cases, such as in the presence of a monodromy, the self-interactions of ALPs can be sufficiently strong such that the homogeneous field fragments soon after the onset of oscillations. The resulting large inhomogeneities can lead to the production of gravitational waves (GWs). We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of fragmentation, as well as of the subsequent turbulent regime, and calculate the stochastic GW background that is produced from this process. The GW background can be enhanced if the time evolution features an extended intermediate phase of ultrarelativistic dynamics due to a small mass at the bottom of the potential. Yet, this enhancement is limited by the requirement that the dark matter remains sufficiently cold. In some cases the resulting GWs may be within reach of future GW detectors, allowing a complementary probe of this type of dark matter.
