Off-shell Higgs Interpretations Task Force: Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup Report

This report presents the results of the Models and Effective Field Theories Subgroup of the Off-Shell Interpretations Task Force in the LHC Higgs Working Group. The main goal of the subgroup was to discuss and advance the potential impact of off-shell Higgs measurements on searches for BSM physics carried out in the EFT framework or as benchmark model studies. In the first contribution, the off-shell potential to resolve flat directions in parameter space for on-shell measurements is studied. Furthermore, the sensitivity of off-shell measurements to SMEFT dimension-6 operators for the gg $\to$ ZZ process is discussed, and studies of explicit models that are testable in off-shell production are reviewed. In the second contribution, the SMEFT effects in the off-shell gluon fusion and electroweak processes are discussed. Subsequently, the computation of integrated and differential effects using SMEFT@NLO and MG5_aMC@NLO, or JHUGen and MCFM, is demonstrated. On that basis, a study of the prospects of obtaining additional SMEFT constraints - beyond those from existing global fits - by utilising the off-shell process is presented. For clarification, a revised introduction, definition and discussion of the Higgs basis parametrisation of the SMEFT is given in the third contribution. In short notes on the SMEFT, the Higgs basis with an additional constraint is discussed and relations between the Higgs and Warsaw bases are presented. Lastly, an overview of EFT calculations and tools is given.

The physics case of a 3 TeV muon collider stage

In the path towards a muon collider with center of mass energy of 10 TeV or more, a stage at 3 TeV emerges as an appealing option. Reviewing the physics potential of such muon collider is the main purpose of this document. In order to outline the progression of the physics performances across the stages, a few sensitivity projections for higher energy are also presented. There are many opportunities for probing new physics at a 3 TeV muon collider. Some of them are in common with the extensively documented physics case of the CLIC 3 TeV energy stage, and include measuring the Higgs trilinear coupling and testing the possible composite nature of the Higgs boson and of the top quark at the 20 TeV scale. Other opportunities are unique of a 3 TeV muon collider, and stem from the fact that muons are collided rather than electrons. This is exemplified by studying the potential to explore the microscopic origin of the current $g$-2 and $B$-physics anomalies, which are both related with muons.

$B$ anomalies under the lens of electroweak precision

The measurements carried out at LEP and SLC projected us into the precision era of electroweak physics. This has also been relevant in the theoretical interpretation of LHCb and Belle measurements of rare $B$ semileptonic decays, paving the road for new physics with the inference of lepton universality violation in $R_{K^{(*)}}$ ratios. The simplest explanation of these flavour anomalies -- sizeable one-loop contributions respecting Minimal Flavour Violation -- is currently disfavoured by electroweak precision data. In this work, we discuss how to completely relieve the present tension between electroweak constraints and one-loop minimal flavour violating solutions to $R_{K^{(*)}}$. We determine the correlations in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that highlight the existence of such a possibility. Then, we consider minimal extensions of the Standard Model where our effective-field-theory picture can be realized. We discuss how these solutions to $b \to s \ell \ell$ anomalies, respecting electroweak precision and without any new source of flavour violation, may point to the existence of a $Z^{\prime}$ boson at around the TeV scale, within the discovery potential of LHC, or to leptoquark scenarios.

Dark Matter production from relativistic bubble walls

In this paper we present a novel mechanism for producing the observed Dark Matter(DM) relic abundance during the First Order Phase Transition (FOPT) in the early universe. We show that the bubble expansion with ultra-relativistic velocities can lead to the abundance of DM particles with masses much larger than the scale of the transition. We study this non-thermal production mechanism in the context of a generic phase transition and the electroweak phase transition. The application of the mechanism to the Higgs portal DM as well as the signal in the Stochastic Gravitational Background are discussed.

Four-fermion operators at dimension 6: dispersion relations and UV completions

A major task in phenomenology today is constraining the parameter space of SMEFT and constructing models of fundamental physics that the SM derives from. To this effect, we report an exhaustive list of sum rules for 4-fermion operators of dimension 6, connecting low energy Wilson coefficients to cross-sections in the UV. Unlike their dimension 8 counterparts which are amenable to a positivity bound, the discussion here is more involved due to the weaker convergence and indefinite signs of the dispersion integrals. We illustrate this by providing examples with weakly coupled UV completions leading to opposite signs of the Wilson coefficients for both convergent and non-convergent dispersion integrals. We further decompose dispersion integrals under weak isospin and color groups which lead to a tighter relation between IR measurements and UV models. These sum rules can become an effective tool for constructing consistent UV completions for SMEFT following the prospective measurement of these Wilson coefficients.

Bubble wall velocity: heavy physics effects

We analyse the dynamics of the relativistic bubble expansion during the first order phase transition focusing on the ultra relativistic velocities $γ\gg 1$. We show that fields much heavier than the scale of the phase transition can significantly contribute to the friction and modify the motion of the bubble wall leading to interesting phenomenological consequences. NLO effects on the friction due to the soft vector field emission are reviewed as well.

Phase transitions in perturbative walking dynamics

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition in a toy model where the walking dynamics is realized perturbatively. We study the properties of the phase transition focusing on the possible cosmological signatures it can provide. Interestingly the model is well under perturbative control only when the mass of the lightest field - the dilaton/scalon is much lighter than the rest of the fields and the phase transition proceeds slowly leading to strong signals in the stochastic gravitational wave spectrum.

Diphotons from Diaxions

We study models in which the 750 GeV diphoton excess is due to a scalar decaying to two pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons that subsequently decay into two pairs of highly boosted photons, misidentified as individual photons. Performing a model independent analysis we find that, with axion mass around $200$ MeV, this class of theories can naturally explain the observed signal with a large width, without violating monojet constraints. At the same time the requirement of a prompt axion decay can be satisfied only with a relatively large axion-photon coupling, leading to many new charged particles at the TeV scale. However, the required multiplicities of such fields is still moderately reduced relative to models with direct diphoton production.

Effective field theory analysis of double Higgs production via gluon fusion

We perform a detailed study of double Higgs production via gluon fusion in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework where effects from new physics are parametrized by local operators. Our analysis provides a perspective broader than the one followed in most of the previous analyses, where this process was merely considered as a way to extract the Higgs trilinear coupling. We focus on the $hh \to b\bar bγγ$ channel and perform a thorough simulation of signal and background at the 14 TeV LHC and a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. We make use of invariant mass distributions to enhance the sensitivity on the EFT coefficients and give a first assessment of the impact of jet substructure techniques on the results. The range of validity of the EFT description is estimated, as required to consistently exploit the high-energy range of distributions, pointing out the potential relevance of dimension-8 operators. Our analysis contains a few important improvements over previous studies and identifies some inaccuracies there appearing in connection with the estimate of signal and background rates. The estimated precision on the Higgs trilinear coupling that follows from our results is less optimistic than previously claimed in the literature. We find that a ~30% accuracy can be reached on the trilinear coupling at a future 100 TeV collider with 3 ab^-1. Only an O(1) determination seems instead possible at the LHC with the same amount of integrated luminosity.

On the Flavor Structure of Natural Composite Higgs Models & Top Flavor Violation

We explore the up flavor structure of composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone-boson Higgs models, where we focus on the flavor anarchic minimal $SO(5)$ case. We identify the different sources of flavor violation in this framework and emphasise the differences from the anarchic Randall-Sundrum scenario. In particular, the fact that the flavor symmetry does not commute with the symmetries that stabilize the Higgs potential may constrain the flavor structure of the theory. In addition, we consider the interplay between the fine tuning of the model and flavor violation. We find that generically the tuning of this class of models is worsen in the anarchic case due to the contributions from the additional fermion resonances. We show that, even in the presence of custodial symmetry, large top flavor violating rate are naturally expected. In particular, $t\to cZ$ branching ratio of order of $10^{-5}$ is generic for this class of models. Thus, this framework can be tested in the next run of the LHC as well as in other future colliders. We also find that the top flavor violation is weakly correlated with the increase amount of fine tuning. Finally, other related flavor violation effects, such as $t \to ch$ and in the $D$ system, are found to be too small to be observed by the current and near future colliders.

Same sign di-lepton candles of the composite gluons

Composite Higgs models, where the Higgs boson is identified with the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone-Boson (pNGB) of a strong sector, typically have light composite fermions (top partners) to account for a light Higgs. This type of models generically also predicts the existence of heavy vector fields (composite gluons) which appear as an octet of QCD. These composite gluons generically become very broad resonances once phase-space allows them to decay into two composite fermions. This makes their traditional experimental searches, which are designed to look for narrow resonances, quite ineffective. In this paper we, as an alternative, propose to utilize the impact of composite gluons on the production of top partners to constrain their parameter space. We place constraints on the parameters of the composite resonances using the 8 TeV LHC data and also assess the reach of the 14 TeV LHC. We find that the high luminosity LHC will be able to probe composite gluon masses up to $\sim 6$ TeV, even in the broad resonance regime.

Taming the off-shell Higgs boson

We study the off-shell Higgs data in the process $pp\to h^{(*)} \to Z^{(\ast)}Z^{(\ast)}\to 4\ell$, to constrain deviations of the Higgs couplings. We point out that this channel can be used to resolve the long- and short-distance contributions to Higgs production by gluon fusion and can thus be complementary to $pp\to ht\bar t$ in measuring the top Yukawa coupling. Our analysis, performed in the context of Effective Field Theory, shows that current data do not allow one to draw any model-independent conclusions. We study the prospects at future hadron colliders, including the high-luminosity LHC and accelerators with higher-energy, up to 100 TeV. The available QCD calculations and the theoretical uncertainties affecting our analysis are also briefly discussed.

Probing Higgs couplings with high p_T Higgs production

Possible extensions of the Standard Model predict modifications of the Higgs couplings to gluons and to the SM top quark. The values of these two couplings can, in general, be independent. We discuss a way to measure these interactions by studying the Higgs production at high p_T within an effective field theory formalism. We also propose an observable r_\pm with reduced theoretical errors and suggest its experimental interpretation.

Warped Dipole Completed, with a Tower of Higgs Bosons

In the context of warped extra-dimensional models which address both the Planck-weak- and flavor-hierarchies of the Standard Model (SM), it has been argued that certain observables can be calculated within the 5D effective field theory only with the Higgs field propagating in the bulk of the extra dimension, just like other SM fields. The related studies also suggested an interesting form of decoupling of the heavy Kaluza-Klein (KK) fermion states in the warped 5D SM in the limit where the profile of the SM Higgs approaches the IR brane. We demonstrate that a similar phenomenon occurs when we include the mandatory KK excitations of the SM Higgs in loop diagrams giving dipole operators for SM fermions, where the earlier work only considered the SM Higgs (zero mode). In particular, in the limit of a quasi IR-localized SM Higgs, the effect from summing over KK Higgs modes is unsuppressed (yet finite), in contrast to the naive expectation that KK Higgs modes decouple as their masses become large. In this case, a wide range of KK Higgs modes have quasi-degenerate masses and enhanced couplings to fermions relative to those of the SM Higgs, which contribute to the above remarkable result. In addition, we find that the total contribution from KK Higgs modes in general can be comparable to that from the SM Higgs alone. It is also interesting that KK Higgs couplings to KK fermions of the same chirality as the corresponding SM modes have an unsuppressed overall contribution, in contrast to the result from the earlier studies involving the SM Higgs. Our studies suggest that KK Higgs bosons are generally an indispensable part of the warped 5D SM, and their phenomenology such as signals at the LHC are worth further investigation.

Boosting Top Partner Searches in Composite Higgs Models

Fermionic third generation top partners are generic in composite Higgs models. They are likely to decay into third generation quarks and electroweak bosons. We propose a novel cut-and-count-style analysis in which we cross correlate the model-dependent single and model-independent pair production processes for the top partners $X_{5/3}$ and $B$. In the class of composite Higgs models we study, $X_{5/3}$ is very special as it is the lightest exotic fermion. A constraint on the mass of $X_{5/3}$ directly extends to constrains on all top partner masses. By combining jet substructure methods with conventional reconstruction techniques we show that in this kind of final state a smooth interpolation between the boosted and unboosted regime is possible. We find that a reinterpretation of existing searches can improve bounds on the parameter space of composite Higgs models. Further, at 8 TeV a combined search for $X_{5/3}$ and $B$ in the $l+\rm{jets}$ final state can be more sensitive than a search involving same-sign dileptons.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and the Higgs Boson: Confronting Theories at Colliders

In this review, we discuss methods of parsing direct and indirect information from collider experiments regarding the Higgs boson and describe simple ways in which experimental likelihoods can be consistently reconstructed and interfaced with model predictions in pertinent parameter spaces. Ultimately these methods are used to constrain a five-dimensional parameter space describing a model-independent framework for electroweak symmetry breaking. We review prevalent scenarios for extending the electroweak symmetry breaking sector relative to the Standard Model and emphasize their predictions for nonstandard Higgs phenomenology that could be observed in LHC data if naturalness is realized in particular ways. Specifically we identify how measurements of Higgs couplings can be used to imply the existence of new physics at particular scales within various contexts, highlighting some parameter spaces of interest in order to give examples of how the data surrounding the new state can most effectively be used to constrain specific models of weak scale physics.

Model-Independent Bounds on a Light Higgs

We present up-to-date constraints on a generic Higgs parameter space. An accurate assessment of these exclusions must take into account statistical, and potentially signal, fluctuations in the data currently taken at the LHC. For this, we have constructed a straightforward statistical method for making full use of the data that is publicly available. We show that, using the expected and observed exclusions which are quoted for each search channel, we can fully reconstruct likelihood profiles under very reasonable and simple assumptions. Even working with this somewhat limited information, we show that our method is sufficiently accurate to warrant its study and advocate its use over more naive prescriptions. Using this method, we can begin to narrow in on the remaining viable parameter space for a Higgs-like scalar state, and to ascertain the nature of any hints of new physics---Higgs or otherwise---appearing in the data.

New Prospects for Higgs Compositeness in h -> Z gamma

We discuss novel effects in the phenomenology of a light Higgs boson within the context of composite models. We show that large modifications may arise in the decay of a composite Nambu-Goldstone boson Higgs to a photon and a Z boson, h -> Z gamma. These can be generated by the exchange of massive composite states of a strong sector that breaks a left-right symmetry, which we show to be the sole symmetry structure responsible for governing the size of these new effects in the absence of Goldstone-breaking interactions. In this paper we consider corrections to the decay h -> Z gamma obtained either by integrating out vectors at tree level, or by integrating out vector-like fermions at loop level. In each case, the pertinent operators that are generated are parametrically enhanced relative to other interactions that arise at loop level in the Standard Model such as h -> gg and h -> gamma gamma. Thus we emphasize that the effects of interest here provide a unique possibility to probe the dynamics underlying electroweak symmetry breaking, and do not depend on any contrivance stemming from carefully chosen spectra. The effects we discuss naturally lead to concerns of compatibility with precision electroweak measurements, and we show with relevant computations that these corrections can be kept well under control in our general parameter space.

Contextualizing the Higgs at the LHC

Recent excesses across different search modes of the collaborations at the LHC seem to indicate the presence of a Higgs-like scalar particle at 125 GeV. Using the current data sets, we review and update analyses addressing the extent to which this state is compatible with the Standard Model, and provide two contextual answers for how it might instead fit into alternative scenarios with enlarged electroweak symmetry breaking sectors.

Determining Higgs couplings with a model-independent analysis of h ->gamma gamma

Discovering a Higgs boson at the LHC will address a major outstanding issue in particle physics but will also raise many new questions. A concerted effort to determine the couplings of this new state to other Standard Model fields will be of critical importance. Precise knowledge of these couplings can serve as a powerful probe of new physics, and will be needed in attempts to accommodate such a new boson within specific models. In this paper, we present a method for constraining these couplings in a model-independent way, focusing primarily on an exclusive analysis of the gamma gamma final state. We demonstrate the discriminating power of fully exclusive analyses, and discuss ways in which information can be shared between experimentalists and theorists in order to facilitate collaboration in the task of establishing the true origins of any new physics discovered at the LHC.

Early Higgs Hints for Non-Minimal Supersymmetry

We discuss the role that Higgs coupling measurements can play in differentiating supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. Fitting current LHC data to the Higgs couplings, we find that the likelihood fit shows a preference in the direction of suppressed (enhanced) bottom (top) quark couplings. In the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model, we demonstrate that for tan beta > 1, there is tension in achieving such fermion couplings due to the structure of the Higgs quartic couplings. In anticipation of interpreting supersymmetric models with future data, we determine a single straightforward condition required to access the region of coupling space preferred by current data.

Improving the tunings of the MSSM by adding triplets and singlet

We study an extension of the MSSM which includes both new SU(2) triplets with hypercharge $\pm 1$ and a SM gauge singlet (a la NMSSM) which are coupled to each other. We are motivated by the little hierarchy problem, as well as by the $μ$ problem of the MSSM. We show that the NMSSM and the triplet-extended MSSM can successfully solve problems of one another: while triplets are responsible for large correction to the lightest physical Higgs mass, the singlet's VEV explains why the $μ$ terms (for the Higgs doublets and the new triplets) are naturally of order the electroweak (EW) scale. We also show that singlet-triplet coupling significantly changes the RG evolution of the singlet mass squared, helping to render this mass squared negative, as required for the singlet to acquire a VEV. We analyze constrains on this scenario from EW precision measurements and find that a relatively large region of the parameter space of this model is viable, especially with the triplet fermions (including doubly-charged) being light.

Light Custodians and Higgs Physics in Composite Models

Composite Higgs models involving partial compositeness of Standard Model fermions typically require the introduction of fermionic partners which are relatively light in realistic scenarios. In this paper, we analyze the role of these light custodian fermions in the phenomenology of the composite Higgs models and show that they significantly modify couplings of the Higgs field. We focus on the coupling to gluons in particular, which is of central importance for Higgs production at the LHC. We show that this coupling can be increased as well as decreased depending on the SM fermion embedding in the composite multiplets. We also discuss modification of the Higgs couplings to bottom and top quarks and show that modifications to all these three couplings Hgg, Htt, and Hbb are generically independent parameters.

Superconformal Technicolor

In supersymmetric theories with a strong conformal sector, soft supersymmetry breaking at the TeV scale naturally gives rise to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking at the same scale. We investigate models where such a sector dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry. We consider two scenarios, one where the strong dynamics induces vacuum expectation values for elementary Higgs fields, and another where the strong dynamics is solely responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking. In both cases there is no fine tuning required to explain the absence of a Higgs boson below the LEP bound, solving the supersymmetry naturalness problem. A good precision electroweak fit can be obtained, and quark and lepton masses are generated without flavor-changing neutral currents. Electroweak symmetry breaking may be dominated either by the elementary Higgs bosons or by the strong dynamics. In addition to standard superymmetry collider signals, these models predict production of multiple heavy standard model particles (t, W, Z, and b) from decays of resonances in the strong sector.

Superconformal Technicolor: Models and Phenomenology

In supersymmetric theories with a strong conformal sector, soft supersymmetry breaking naturally gives rise to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the strong sector at the TeV scale. We construct and analyze models where such a sector dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry, and take the first steps in studying their phenomenology. Quark and lepton masses arise from conventional Yukawa couplings to elementary Higgs bosons, so there are no additional flavor-changing effects associated with the strong dynamics. A good precision electroweak fit can be obtained because the strong sector is an SU(2) gauge theory with one weak doublet, and has adjustable parameters that control the violation of custodial symmetry. In addition to the the standard supersymmetry signals, these models predict production of multiple heavy standard model particles (t, W, Z, and b) from decays of resonances in the strong sector. The strong sector has no approximate parity symmetry, so WW scattering is unitarized by states that can decay to WWW as well as WW.

Higgs Production from Gluon Fusion in Warped Extra Dimensions

We present an analysis of the loop-induced couplings of the Higgs boson to the massless gauge fields (gluons and photons) in the warped extra dimension models where all Standard Model fields propagate in the bulk. We show that in such models corrections to the hgg and $hγγ$ couplings are potentially very large. These corrections can lead to generically sizable deviations in the production and decay rates of the Higgs boson, even when the new physics states lie beyond the direct reach of the LHC.

LHC Signals for Coset Electroweak Gauge Bosons in Warped/Composite PGB Higgs Models

The framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in it is a very well-motivated extension of the SM since it can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchy problems of the SM. Within this framework, solution to the little hierarchy problem motivates extending the SM electroweak (EW) 5D gauge symmetry in such a way that its breakdown to the SM delivers the SM Higgs boson. We study signals at the large hadron collider (LHC) for the extra EW (called coset) gauge bosons, a fundamental ingredient of this framework. The coset gauge bosons, due to their unique EW gauge quantum numbers [doublets of SU(2)_L], do not couple at leading order to two SM particles. We find that, using the associated production of the charged coset gauge bosons via their coupling to SM bottom quark and a (light) KK top quark, the LHC can have a 3σreach of \sim 2 (2.6) TeV for the coset gauge boson masses with \sim 100 (1000) fb^{-1} luminosity. Since current theoretical framework(s) suggest an {\em indirect} lower limit on coset gauge boson masses of >3 TeV, luminosity or energy upgrade of LHC is likely to be crucial in observing these states.

Radion Mediated Flavor Changing Neutral Currents

In the context of a warped extra-dimension with Standard Model fields in the bulk, we obtain the general flavor structure of the Radion couplings to fermions and show that the result is independent on the particular nature of the Higgs mechanism (bulk or brane localized). These couplings will be generically misaligned with respect to the fermion mass matrix when the fermion bulk mass parameters are not all degenerate. When the Radion is light enough, the generic size of these tree-level flavor changing couplings will be strongly constrained by the experimental bounds on $ΔF=2$ processes. At the LHC the possibility of a heavier Radion decaying into top and charm quarks is then considered as a promising signal to probe the flavor structure of both the Radion sector and the whole scenario.
