Large gauge transformations, gauge invariance, and the QCD $θ_{\text{YM}}$-term

The eliminative view of gauge degrees of freedom -- the view that they arise solely from descriptive redundancy and are therefore eliminable from the theory -- is a lively topic of debate in the philosophy of physics. Recent work attempts to leverage properties of the QCD $θ_{\text{YM}}$-term to provide a novel argument against the eliminative view. The argument is based on the claim that the QCD $θ_{\text{YM}}$-term changes under "large" gauge transformations. Here we review geometrical propositions about fiber bundles that unequivocally falsify these claims: the $θ_{\text{ YM}}$-term encodes topological features of the fiber bundle used to represent gauge degrees of freedom, but it is fully gauge-invariant. Nonetheless, within the essentially classical viewpoint pursued here, the physical role of the $θ_{\text{YM}}$-term shows the physical importance of bundle topology (or superpositions thereof) and thus weighs against (a naive) eliminativism.

Soft charges from the geometry of field space

Infinite sets of asymptotic soft-charges were recently shown to be related to new symmetries of the $S$-matrix, spurring a large amount of research on this and related questions. Notwithstanding, the raison-d'être of these soft-charges rests on less firm ground, insofar as their known derivations through generalized Noether procedures tend to rely on the fixing of (gauge-breaking) boundary conditions rather than on manifestly gauge-invariant computations. In this article, we show that a geometrical framework anchored in the space of field configurations singles out the known leading-order soft charges in gauge theories. Our framework unifies the treatment of finite and infinite regions, and thus it explains why the infinite enhancement of the symmetry group is a property of asymptotic null infinity and should not be expected to hold within finite regions, where at most a finite number of physical charges -- corresponding to the reducibility parameters of the quasi-local field configuration -- is singled out. As a bonus, our formalism also suggests a simple proposal for the origin of magnetic-type charges at asymptotic infinity based on spacetime (Lorentz) covariance rather than electromagnetic duality.

Asymptotic Renormalization in Flat Space: Symplectic Potential and Charges of Electromagnetism

We present a systematic procedure to renormalize the symplectic potential of the electromagnetic field at null infinity in Minkowski space. We work in $D\geq6$ spacetime dimensions as a toy model of General Relativity in $D\geq4$ dimensions. Total variation counterterms as well as corner counterterms are both subtracted from the symplectic potential to make it finite. These counterterms affect respectively the action functional and the Hamiltonian symmetry generators. The counterterms are local and universal. We analyze the asymptotic equations of motion and identify the free data associated with the renormalized canonical structure along a null characteristic. This allows the construction of the asymptotic renormalized charges whose Ward identity gives the QED soft theorem, supporting the physical viability of the renormalization procedure. We touch upon how to extend our analysis to the presence of logarithmic anomalies and upon how our procedure compares to holographic renormalization.

Non-Perturbative 3D Quantum Gravity: Quantum Boundary States and Exact Partition Function

We push forward the investigation of holographic dualities in 3D quantum gravity formulated as a topological quantum field theory, studying the correspondence between boundary and bulk structures. Working with the Ponzano-Regge topological state-sum model defining an exact discretization of 3d quantum gravity, we analyze how the partition function for a solid twisted torus depends on the boundary quantum state. This configuration is relevant to the AdS${}_{3}$/CFT${}_{2}$ correspondence. We introduce boundary spin network states with coherent superposition of spins on a square lattice on the boundary surface. This allows for the first exact analytical calculation of Ponzano-Regge amplitudes with extended 2D boundary (beyond the single tetrahedron). We get a regularized finite truncation of the BMS character formula obtained from the one-loop perturbative quantization of 3D gravity. This hints towards the existence of an underlying symmetry and the integrability of the theory for finite boundary at the quantum level for coherent boundary spin network states.

SL(2,C) Chern-Simons Theory, a non-Planar Graph Operator, and 4D Loop Quantum Gravity with a Cosmological Constant: Semiclassical Geometry

We study the expectation value of a nonplanar Wilson graph operator in SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$. In particular we analyze its asymptotic behaviour in the double-scaling limit in which both the representation labels and the Chern-Simons coupling are taken to be large, but with fixed ratio. When the Wilson graph operator has a specific form, motivated by loop quantum gravity, the critical point equations obtained in this double-scaling limit describe a very specific class of flat connection on the graph complement manifold. We find that flat connections in this class are in correspondence with the geometries of constant curvature 4-simplices. The result is fully non-perturbative from the perspective of the reconstructed geometry. We also show that the asymptotic behavior of the amplitude contains at the leading order an oscillatory part proportional to the Regge action for the single 4-simplex in the presence of a cosmological constant. In particular, the cosmological term contains the full-fledged curved volume of the 4-simplex. Interestingly, the volume term stems from the asymptotics of the Chern-Simons action. This can be understood as arising from the relation between Chern-Simons theory on the boundary of a region, and a theory defined by an $F^2$ action in the bulk. Another peculiarity of our approach is that the sign of the curvature of the reconstructed geometry, and hence of the cosmological constant in the Regge action, is not fixed a priori, but rather emerges semiclassically and dynamically from the solution of the equations of motion. In other words, this work suggests a relation between 4-dimensional loop quantum gravity with a cosmological constant and SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory in 3-dimensions with knotted graph defects.

Spacetime thermodynamics without hidden degrees of freedom

A celebrated result by Jacobson is the derivation of Einstein's equations from Unruh's temperature, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the Clausius relation. This has been repeatedly taken as evidence for an interpretation of Einstein's equations as equations of state for unknown degrees of freedom underlying the metric. We show that a different interpretation of Jacobson result is possible, which does not imply the existence of additional degrees of freedom, and follows only from the quantum properties of gravity. We introduce the notion of quantum gravitational Hadamard states, which give rise to the full local thermodynamics of gravity.

Radiative corrections to the EPRL-FK spinfoam graviton

I study the corrections engendered by the insertion of a "melon" graph in the bulk of the first-order spinfoam used for the graviton propagator. I find that these corrections are highly non-trivial and, in particular, that they concern those terms which disappear in the Bojowald-Bianchi-Magliaro-Perini limit of vanishing Barbero-Immirzi parameter at fixed area. This fact is the first realization of the often cited idea that the spinfoam amplitude receives higher order corrections under the refinement of the underlying two-complex.

Self-Energy of the Lorentzian EPRL-FK Spin Foam Model of Quantum Gravity

We calculate the most divergent contribution to the non-degenerate sector of the self-energy (or "melonic") graph in the context of the Lorentzian EPRL-FK Spin Foam model of Quantum Gravity. We find that such a contribution is logarithmically divergent in the cut-off over the SU(2)-representation spins when one chooses the face amplitude guaranteeing the face-splitting invariance of the foam.We also find that the dependence on the boundary data is different from that of the bare propagator. This fact has its origin in the non-commutativity of the EPRL-FK Y-map with the projector onto SL(2,C)-invariant states. In the course of the paper, we discuss in detail the approximations used during the calculations, its geometrical interpretation as well as the physical consequences of our result.

Critical behavior of colored tensor models in the large N limit

Colored tensor models have been recently shown to admit a large N expansion, whose leading order encodes a sum over a class of colored triangulations of the D-sphere. The present paper investigates in details this leading order. We show that the relevant triangulations proliferate like a species of colored trees. The leading order is therefore summable and exhibits a critical behavior, independent of the dimension. A continuum limit is reached by tuning the coupling constant to its critical value while inserting an infinite number of pairs of D-simplices glued together in a specific way. We argue that the dominant triangulations are branched polymers.
