Insights from Melvin-Kerr-Newman spacetimes

We examine several aspects of black hole horizon physics using the Melvin-Kerr-Newman (MKN) family of spacetimes. Roughly speaking these are black holes immersed in a distorting background magnetic field and unlike the standard Kerr-Newman (KN) family they are not asymptotically flat. As exact solutions with horizons that can be highly distorted relative to KN, they provide a good testbed for ideas about and theorems constraining black hole horizons. We explicitly show that MKN horizons with fixed magnetic field parameter may be uniquely specified by their area, charge and angular momentum and that the charge and angular momentum are bound by horizon area in the same way as for KN. As expected, extremal MKN horizons are geometrically isomorphic to extremal KN horizons and the geometric distortion of near-extremal horizons is constrained by their proximity to extremality. At the other extreme, Melvin-Schwarzschild (MS) solutions may be infinitely distorted, however for intermediate cases any non-zero charge or angular momentum restricts distortions to be finite. These properties are in agreement with known theorems but are seen to be satisfied in interesting and non-trivial ways.

Killing Spinors -- Beyond Supergravity

This is a doctoral thesis on the application of techniques originally developed in the programme of characterisation of supersymmetric solutions to Supergravity theories, to finding alternative backgrounds. We start by discussing the concept of a Killing spinor, and how these are paramount to the process of classifying the aforementioned supersymmetric solutions. Moreover, these geometric objects also have applications when considered in different scenarios (the 'beyond' in the title). In particular, techniques based on a different parallelising rule for a spinorial field can be used for obtaining solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-De Sitter theories, as well as a (partial) classification of lorentzian Einstein-Weyl manifolds, a problem of geometrical interest. The annexe contain an introduction and summary in Spanish language. The appendices discuss the tensorial and spinorial conventions employed, some relevant geometrical information on the scalar manifolds for the matter contents of interest, as well as for the null case solutions, including Kundt waves. Also, a short introduction to Weyl geometry and the Similitude group, as well as the Lorentz and Spin groups, is given.

Einstein Weyl Structures and de Sitter Supergravity

The geometric structure of the null solutions of de Sitter D=5 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets is investigated. These solutions are Kundt metrics, constructed from a one-parameter family of three dimensional Gauduchon-Tod base spaces. We give examples, including the near horizon geometries previously found in arxiv:hep-th/10122120. In addition, two special cases are considered in detail. In the first, we consider solutions for which the Gauduchon-Tod base space is the Berger sphere. In the second case we take the null 1-form Killing spinor bilinear to be recurrent, so that the holonomy of the Levi-Civita connection is contained in Sim(3).
