Using Malliavin calculus to solve a chemical diffusion master equation

We propose a novel method to solve a chemical diffusion master equation of birth and death type. This is an infinite system of Fokker-Planck equations where the different components are coupled by reaction dynamics similar in form to a chemical master equation. This system was proposed in [3] for modelling the probabilistic evolution of chemical reaction kinetics associated with spatial diffusion of individual particles. Using some basic tools and ideas from infinite dimensional Gaussian analysis we are able to reformulate the aforementioned infinite system of Fokker-Planck equations as a single evolution equation solved by a generalized stochastic process and written in terms of Malliavin derivatives and differential second quantization operators. Via this alternative representation we link certain finite dimensional projections of the solution of the original problem to the solution of a single partial differential equations of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type containing as many variables as the dimension of the aforementioned projection space.

A note about the invariance of the basic reproduction number for stochastically perturbed SIS models

We try to justify rigorously, using a Wong-Zakai approximation argument, the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) stochastic differential equation proposed in [2]. We discover that according to this approach the "right" stochastic model to be considered should be the Stratonovich version of the Itô equation analyzed in [2]. Surprisingly, this alternative model presents the following feature: the threshold value characterizing the two different asymptotic regimes of the solution coincides with the one describing the classical SIS deterministic equation.

Nash estimates and upper bounds for non-homogeneous Kolmogorov equations

We prove a Gaussian upper bound for the fundamental solutions of a class of ultra-parabolic equations in divergence form. The bound is independent on the smoothness of the coefficients and generalizes some classical results by Nash, Aronson and Davies. The class considered has relevant applications in the theory of stochastic processes, in physics and in mathematical finance.

Prohorov-type local limit theorems on abstract Wiener spaces

We prove that the density of $\frac{X_1+\cdot\cdot\cdot+X_n-nE[X_1]}{\sqrt{n}}$, where $\{X_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables taking values on an abstract Wiener space, converges in $\mathcal{L}^1$ to the density of a certain Gaussian measure which is absolutely continuous with respect to the reference Wiener measure. The crucial feature in our investigation is that we do not require the covariance structure of $\{X_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ to coincide with the one of the Wiener measure. This produces a non trivial (different from the constant function one) limiting object which reflects the different covariance structures involved. The present paper generalizes the results proved in [18] and deepens the connection between local limit theorems on (infinite dimensional) Gaussian spaces and some key tools from the Analysis on the Wiener space, like the Wiener-Itô chaos decomposition, Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and Wick product. We also verify and discuss our main assumptions on some examples arising from the applications: dimension independent Berry-Esseen-type bounds and weak solutions of stochastic differential equations.

A note on a local limit theorem for Wiener space valued random variables

We prove a local limit theorem, i.e. a central limit theorem for densities, for a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables taking values on an abstract Wiener space; the common law of those random variables is assumed to be absolutely continuous with respect to the reference Gaussian measure. We begin by showing that the key roles of scaling operator and convolution product in this infinite dimensional Gaussian framework are played by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and Wick product, respectively. We proceed by establishing a necessary condition on the density of the random variables for the local limit theorem to hold true. We then reverse the implication and prove under an additional assumption the desired L1-convergence of the density of \frac{X_1+...+X_n}{\sqrt{n}}. We close the paper comparing our result with certain Berry-Esseen bounds for multidimensional central limit theorems.

A sharp interpolation between the Hölder and Gaussian Young inequalities

We prove a very general sharp inequality of the Hölder--Young--type for functions defined on infinite dimensional Gaussian spaces. We begin by considering a family of commutative products for functions which interpolates between the point--wise and Wick products; this family arises naturally in the context of stochastic differential equations, through Wong--Zakai--type approximation theorems, and plays a key role in some generalizations of the Beckner--type Poincaré inequality. We then obtain a crucial integral representation for that family of products which is employed, together with a generalization of the classic Young inequality due to Lieb, to prove our main theorem. We stress that our main inequality contains as particular cases the Hölder inequality and Nelson's hyper-contractive estimate, thus providing a unified framework for two fundamental results of the Gaussian analysis.

A unified approach to local limit theorems in Gaussian spaces and the law of small numbers

Through a reformulation of the local limit theorem and law of small numbers, which is obtained by working in the spaces naturally associated to the limiting distributions, we discover a general and abstract framework for the investigation of that type of limit theorems. From this new perspective, the convolution and scaling operators utilized in the classical results mentioned before will be identified with the Wick product and second quantization operators, respectively. And here is the advantage of our approach: definitions and most of the properties of Wick products and second quantization operators do not depend (mutatis mutandis) on the underlying probability measure. Then, with the help of Holder-Young-type inequalities for Gaussian and Poisson Wick products proved in previous papers, we show the L^1 convergence of the densities towards the desired limit. We remark that our approach extends without additional assumptions to infinite dimensional Gaussian spaces.

On stochastic differential equations driven by the renormalized square of the Gaussian white noise

We investigate the properties of the Wick square of Gaussian white noises through a new method to perform non linear operations on Hida distributions. This method lays in between the Wick product interpretation and the usual definition of nonlinear functions. We prove on Ito-type formula and solve stochastic differential equations driven by the renormalized square of the Gaussian white noise. Our approach works with standard assumptions on the coefficients of the equations, Lipschitz continuity and linear growth condition, and produces existence and uniqueness results in the space where the noise lives. The linear case is studied in details and positivity of the solution is proved.

A new approach to Poincaré-type inequalities on the Wiener space

We prove a new type of Poincaré inequality on abstract Wiener spaces for a family of probability measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to the reference Gaussian measure. This class of probability measures is characterized by the strong positivity (a notion introduced by Nualart and Zakai in [17]) of their Radon-Nikodym densities. Measures of this type do not belong in general to the class of log-concave measures, which are a wide class of measures satisfying the Poincaré inequality (Brascamp and Lieb [2]). Our approach is based on a point-wise identity relating Wick and ordinary products and on the notion of strong positivity which is connected to the non negativity of Wick powers. Our technique leads also to a partial generalization of the Houdré and Kagan [8] and Houdr?é and P?érez-Abreu [9] Poincaré-type inequalities.

An extension of the Beckner's type Poincaré inequality to convolution measures on abstract Wiener spaces

We generalize the Beckner's type Poincaré inequality \cite{Beckner} to a large class of probability measures on an abstract Wiener space of the form $μ\starν$, where $μ$ is the reference Gaussian measure and $ν$ is a probability measure satisfying a certain integrability condition. As the Beckner inequality interpolates between the Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, we utilize a family of products for functions which interpolates between the usual point-wise multiplication and the Wick product. Our approach is based on the positivity of a quadratic form involving Wick powers and integration with respect to those convolution measures. Our dimension-independent results are compared with some very recent findings in the literature. In addition, we prove that in the finite dimensional case the class of densities of convolutions measures satisfies a point-wise covariance inequality.

A comparison theorem for stochastic differential equations under a Novikov-type condition

We consider a system of stochastic differential equations driven by a standard n-dimensional Brownian motion where the drift coefficient satisfies a Novikov-type condition while the diffusion coefficient is the identity matrix. We define a vector Z of square integrable stochastic processes with the following property: if the filtration of the translated Brownian motion obtained from the Girsanov transform coincides with the one of the driving noise then Z coincides with the unique strong solution of the equation; otherwise the process Z solves in the strong sense a related stochastic differential inequality. This fact together with an additional assumption will provide a comparison result similar to well known theorems obtained in the presence of strong solutions.

A Hölder--Young--Lieb inequality for norms of Gaussian Wick products

An important connection between the finite dimensional Gaussian Wick product and Lebesgue convolution product will be proven first. Then this connection will be used to prove an important Hölder inequality for the norms of Gaussian Wick products, reprove Nelson hypercontractivity inequality, and prove a more general inequality whose marginal cases are the Hölder and Nelson inequalities mentioned before. We will show that there is a deep connection between the Gaussian Hölder inequality and classic Hölder inequality, between the Nelson hypercontractivity and classic Young inequality with the sharp constant, and between the third more general inequality and an extension by Lieb of the Young inequality with the best constant. Since the Gaussian probability measure exists even in the infinite dimensional case, the above three inequalities can be extended, via a classic Fatou's lemma argument, to the infinite dimensional framework.

On a new probabilistic representation for the solution of the heat equation

We obtain a new probabilistic representation for the solution of the heat equation in terms of a product for smooth random variables which is introduced and studied in this paper. This multiplication, expressed in terms of the Hida-Malliavin derivatives of the random variables involved, exhibits many useful properties which are to some extents opposite to some peculiar features of the Wick product.
