Towards the Solution of an Extremal Problem Concerning the Wiener Polarity Index of Alkanes

The Wiener polarity index $W_p$, one of the most studied molecular structure descriptors, was devised by the chemist Harold Wiener for predicting the boiling points of alkanes. The index $W_p$ for chemical trees (chemical graphs representing alkanes) is defined as the number of unordered pairs of vertices at distance 3. A vertex of a chemical tree with the degree at least 3 is called a branching vertex. A segment of a chemical tree $T$ is a path-subtree $S$ whose terminal vertices have degrees different from 2 in $T$ and every internal vertex (if exists) of $S$ has degree 2 in $T$. In this paper, the best possible sharp upper and lower bounds on the Wiener polarity index $W_p$ are derived for the chemical trees of order $n$ with a given number of branching vertices or segments, and the corresponding extremal chemical trees are characterized. As a consequence of the derived results, an open problem concerning the maximal $W_p$ value of chemical trees with a fixed number of segments or branching vertices is solved.

A Note on the Modified Albertson Index

The modified Albertson index, denoted by $A\!^*\!$, of a graph $G$ is defined as $A\!^*\!(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)} |(d_{u})^{2}- (d_{v})^{2}|$, where $d_u$, $d_v$ denote the degrees of the vertices $u$, $v$, respectively, of $G$ and $E(G)$ is the edge set of $G$. In this note, a sharp lower bound of $A\!^*$ in terms of the maximum degree for the case of trees is derived. The $n$-vertex trees having maximal and minimal $A\!^*$ values are also characterized here. Moreover, it is shown that $A\!^*\!(G)$ is non-negative even integer for every graph $G$ and that there exist infinitely many connected graphs whose $A\!^*$ value is $2t$ for every integer $t\in\{0,3,4,5\}\cup\{8,9,10,\cdots\}$.

On the Extremal Zagreb Indices of $\mathbf{\textit{n}}$-Vertex Chemical Trees with Fixed Number of Segments or Branching Vertices

Let $\mathcal{CT}_{n,k}$ and $\mathcal{CT}^*_{n,b}$ be the classes of all $n$-vertex chemical trees with $k$ segments and $b$ branching vertices, respectively, where $3\le k\le n-1$ and $1\le b< \frac{n}{2}-1$. The solution of the problem of finding trees from the class $\mathcal{CT}_{n,k}$ or $\mathcal{CT}^*_{n,b}$, with the minimum first Zagreb index or minimum second Zagreb index follows directly from the main results of [MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 72 (2014) 825-834] or [MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 74 (2015) 57-79]. In this paper, the chemical trees with the maximum first/second Zagreb index are characterized from each of the aforementioned graph classes.

Killing and Noether Symmetries of Plane Symmetric Spacetime

This paper is devoted to investigate the Killing and Noether symmetries of static plane symmetric spacetime. For this purpose, five different cases have been discussed. The Killing and Noether symmetries of Minkwoski spacetime in cartesian coordinates are calculated as a special case and it is found that Lie algebra of the Lagrangian is 10 and 17 dimensional respectively. The symmetries of Taub's universe, anti-deSitter universe, self similar solutions of infinite kind for parallel perfect fluid case and self similar solutions of infinite kind for parallel dust case are also explored. In all the cases, the Noether generators are calculated in the presence of gauge term. All these examples justify the conjecture that Killing symmetries form a subalgebra of Noether symmetries [1].

More on Comparison Between First Geometric-Arithmetic Index and Atom-Bond Connectivity Index

The first geometric-arithmetic (GA) index and atom-bond connectivity (ABC) index are molecular structure descriptors which play a significant role in quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies. Das and Trinajstić [\textit{Chem. Phys. Lett.} \textbf{497} (2010) 149-151] showed that $GA$ index is greater than $ABC$ index for all those graphs (except $K_{1,4}$ and $T^{*}$, see Figure 1) in which the difference between maximum and minimum degree is less than or equal to 3. In this note, it is proved that $GA$ index is greater than $ABC$ index for line graphs of molecular graphs, for general graphs in which the difference between maximum and minimum degree is less than or equal to $(2δ-1)^{2}$ (where $δ$ is the minimum degree and $δ\geq2$) and for some families of trees. Thereby, a partial solution to an open problem proposed by Das and Trinajstić is given.

On the Augmented Zagreb Index

Topological indices play an important role in mathematical chemistry especially in the quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) and quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR). Recent research indicates that the augmented Zagreb index (AZI) possess the best correlating ability among several topological indices. The main purpose of the current study is to establish some mathematical properties of this index, or more precisely, to report tight bounds for the AZI of chemical bicyclic and chemical unicyclic graphs. A Nordhaus-Gaddum-type result for the AZI (of connected graph whose complement is connected) is also derived.

Conserved Quantities in $f(R)$ Gravity via Noether Symmetry

This paper is devoted to investigate $f(R)$ gravity using Noether symmetry approach. For this purpose, we consider Friedmann Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe and spherically symmetric spacetimes. The Noether symmetry generators are evaluated for some specific choice of $f(R)$ models in the presence of gauge term. Further, we calculate the corresponding conserved quantities in each case. Moreover, the importance and stability criteria of these models are discussed.

Exact Solutions of Bianchi Types $I$ and $V$ Models in $f(R,T)$ Gravity

This paper is devoted to investigate the exact solutions of Bianchi types I and V spacetimes in the context of f(R, T) gravity [1]. For this purpose, we found two exact solutions in each case by using assumption of constant deceleration parameter and the variation law of Hubble parameter. The obtained solutions correspond to two different models of this universe. The physical behavior of these models is also discussed.
