Light-Flavour Resonance Production in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions: An Experimental Review

Resonances provide sensitivity to the late-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions, as their lifetimes are comparable to the duration of the hadronic phase. This review summarizes state-of-the-art measurements of light-flavour mesonic and baryonic resonances, including $ρ$(770), $K^{\star}$(892), $ϕ$(1020), $Δ$(1232), $Λ^{\star}$(1520), $Σ^{\star}$(1385) and $Ξ^\star$(1530), in pp, p-A and A-A collisions at SPS, RHIC and the LHC. Systematic trends in yields, mass and width modifications, transverse-momentum spectra, nuclear modification factors, and particle ratios reveal the interplay of re-scattering and regeneration, medium-induced suppression, and the development of collective dynamics with increasing system size and multiplicity. Anisotropic flow results confirm the coupling of resonances to the expanding medium, while recent vector-meson spin-alignment measurements offer fresh insights into hadronization mechanisms and local fields. Ultra-peripheral collisions provide vacuum-like baselines for isolating in-medium effects. Emerging opportunities for charm-resonance studies in upcoming high-luminosity experiments are also outlined.Together, these advances demonstrate the important role of resonance measurements in constraining the space-time evolution of strongly interacting matter.

Expectation of forward-backward rapidity correlations in $p+p$ collisions at the LHC energies

Forward-backward correlation strength ($b$) as a function of pesudorapidity intervals for experimental data from $p+\bar{p}$ non-singly diffractive collisions are compared to PYTHIA and PHOJET model calculations. The correlations are discussed as a function of rapidity window ($Δη$) symmetric about the central rapidity as well as rapidity window separated by a gap ($η_{gap}$) between forward and backward regions. While the correlations are observed to be independent of $Δη$, it is found to decrease with increase in $η_{gap}$. This reflects the role of short range correlations and justifies the use of $η_{gap}$ to obtain the accurate information about the physics of interest, the long range correlations. The experimental $b$ value shows a linear dependence on $\ln \sqrt{s}$ with the maximum value of unity being reached at $\sqrt{s}$ = 16 TeV, beyond the top LHC energy. However calculations from the PYTHIA and PHOJET models indicate a deviation from linear dependence on $\ln \sqrt{s}$ and saturation in the $b$ values being reached beyond $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.8 TeV. Such a saturation in correlation values could have interesting physical interpretations related to clan structures in particle production. Strong forward-backward correlations are associated with cluster production in the collisions. The average number of charged particles to which the clusters fragments, called the cluster size, are found to also increase linearly with $\ln \sqrt{s}$ for both data and the models studied. The rate of increase in cluster size vs. $\ln \sqrt{s}$ from models studied are larger compared to those from the data and higher for PHOJET compared to PYTHIA. Our study indicates that the forward-backward measurements will provide a clear distinguishing observable for the models studied at LHC energies.

Extrapolation of Multiplicity distribution in p+p(\bar(p)) collisions to LHC energies

The multiplicity (N_ch) and pseudorapidity distribution (dN_ch/dη) of primary charged particles in p+p collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies of \sqrt(s) = 10 and 14 TeV are obtained from extrapolation of existing measurements at lower \sqrt(s). These distributions are then compared to calculations from PYTHIA and PHOJET models. The existing \sqrt(s) measurements are unable to distinguish between a logarithmic and power law dependence of the average charged particle multiplicity (<N_ch>) on \sqrt(s), and their extrapolation to energies accessible at LHC give very different values. Assuming a reasonably good description of inclusive charged particle multiplicity distributions by Negative Binomial Distributions (NBD) at lower \sqrt(s) to hold for LHC energies, we observe that the logarithmic \sqrt(s) dependence of <N_ch> are favored by the models at midrapidity. The dN_ch/dηversus ηfor the existing measurements are found to be reasonably well described by a function with three parameters which accounts for the basic features of the distribution, height at midrapidity, central rapidity plateau and the higher rapidity fall-off. Extrapolation of these parameters as a function of \sqrt(s) is used to predict the pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles at LHC energies. dN_ch/dηcalculations from PYTHIA and PHOJET models are found to be lower compared to those obtained from the extrapolated dN_ch/dηversus ηdistributions for a broad ηrange.
