Collapses and Avoiding Wave Function Spreading

We address the impossibility of achieving exact time reversal in a system with many degrees of freedom. This is a particular example of the difficult task of "aiming" an initial classical state so as to become a specific final state. We also comment on the classical-to-quantum transition in any non-separable closed system of $n \geq 2$ degrees of freedom. Even if the system is initially in a well defined WKB, semi-classical state, quantum evolution and, in particular, multiple reflections at classical turning points make it completely quantum mechanical with each particle smeared almost uniformly over all the configuration space. The argument, which is presented in the context of $n$ hard discs, is quite general. Finally, we briefly address more complex quantum systems with many degrees of freedom and ask when can they provide an appropriate environment to the above simpler systems so that quantum spreading is avoided by continuously leaving "imprints" in the environment. We also discuss the possible connections with the pointer systems that are needed in the quantum-to-classical "collapse" transitions.

Quantum interference experiments, modular variables and weak measurements

We address the problem of interference using the Heisenberg picture and highlight some new aspects through the use of pre-selection, post-selection, weak measurements, and modular variables, We present a physical explanation for the different behaviors of a single particle when the distant slit is open or closed: instead of having a quantum wave that passes through all slits, we have a localized particle with non-local interactions with the other slit(s). We introduce a Gedankenexperiment to measure this non-local exchange. While the Heisenberg picture and the Schrodinger pictures are equivalent formulations of quantum mechanics, nevertheless, the results discussed here support a new approach which has led to new insights, new intuitions, new experiments, and even the possibility of new devices that were missed from the old perspective.

De Sitter Invariant Vacuum States, Vertex Operators, and Conformal Field Theory Correlators

We show that there is only one physically acceptable vacuum state for quantum fields in de Sitter space-time which is left invariant under the action of the de Sitter-Lorentz group $SO(1,d)$ and supply its physical interpretation in terms of the Poincare invariant quantum field theory (QFT) on one dimension higher Minkowski spacetime. We compute correlation functions of the generalized vertex operator $:e^{i\hat{S}(x)}:$, where $\hat{S}(x)$ is a massless scalar field, on the $d$-dimensional de Sitter space and demonstrate that their limiting values at timelike infinities on de Sitter space reproduce correlation functions in $(d-1)$-dimensional Euclidean conformal field theory (CFT) on $S^{d-1}$ for scalar operators with arbitrary real conformal dimensions. We also compute correlation functions for a vertex operator $e^{i\hat{S}(u)}$ on the Łobaczewski space and find that they also reproduce correlation functions of the same CFT. The massless field $\hat{S}(u)$ is the nonlocal transform of the massless field $\hat{S}(x)$ on de Sitter space introduced by one of us.

The Narrow Theta(1543)--A QCD Dilemma: Tube or Not Tube?

We argue that a width of less than MeV of the new Theta resonance is inconsistent with the observed ratio of resonance and background events in the various photon initiated experiments if the latter can be described by K, K*, etc., exchange. An evaluation of the Feynman diagrams which were believed to be relevant is presented and supports the general claim in the one case where a cross section has been given by the experimental group. More detailed arguments based on the flux tube model explaining the narrow widths and the apparent conflict with the production rates are presented. We predict narrow Tetra-quarks at mass ~ O(1-1.2 GeV) which the analysis of LEAR may have missed.
