On the Minimum Length of Functional Batch Codes with Small Recovery Sets

Batch codes are of potential use for load balancing and private information retrieval in distributed data storage systems. Recently, a special case of batch codes, termed functional batch codes, was proposed in the literature. In functional batch codes, users can query linear combinations of the information symbols, and not only the information symbols themselves, as is the case for standard batch codes. In this work, we consider linear functional batch codes with the additional property that every query is answered by using only a small number of coded symbols. We derive bounds on the minimum length of such codes, and evaluate the results by numerical computations.

Batch Codes for Asynchronous Recovery of Data

We propose a new model of asynchronous batch codes that allow for parallel recovery of information symbols from a coded database in an asynchronous manner, i.e. when queries arrive at random times and they take varying time to process. We show that the graph-based batch codes studied by et al. are asynchronous. Further, we demonstrate that hypergraphs of Berge girth larger or equal to 4, respectively larger or equal to 3, yield graph-based asynchronous batch codes, respectively private information retrieval (PIR) codes. We prove the hypergraph-theoretic proposition that the maximum number of hyperedges in a hypergraph of a fixed Berge girth equals the quantity in a certain generalization of the hypergraph-theoretic (6,3)-problem, first posed by Brown, Erdős and Sós. We then apply the constructions and bounds by Erdős, Frankl and Rödl about this generalization of the (6,3)-problem, known as the (3$\varrho$-3,$\varrho$)-problem, to obtain batch code constructions and bounds on the redundancy of the graph-based asynchronous batch and PIR codes. We derive bounds on the optimal redundancy of several families of asynchronous batch codes with the query size $t=2$. In particular, we show that the optimal redundancy $ρ(k)$ of graph-based asynchronous batch codes of dimension $k$ for $t=2$ is $2\sqrt{k}$. Moreover, for graph-based asynchronous batch codes with $t \ge 3$, $ρ(k) = O\left({k}^{1/(2-ε)}\right)$ for any small $ε>0$.

Permutation codes, source coding and a generalisation of Bollobás-Lubell-Yamamoto-Meshalkin and Kraft inequalities

We develop a general framework to prove Kraft-type inequalities for prefix-free permutation codes for source coding with various notions of permutation code and prefix. We also show that the McMillan-type converse theorem in most of these cases does not hold, and give a general form of a counterexample. Our approach is more general and works for other structures besides permutation codes. The classical Kraft inequality for prefix-free codes as well as results about permutation codes follow as corollaries of our main theorem and main counterexample.

New Bounds for Permutation Codes in Ulam Metric

New bounds on the cardinality of permutation codes equipped with the Ulam distance are presented. First, an integer-programming upper bound is derived, which improves on the Singleton-type upper bound in the literature for some lengths. Second, several probabilistic lower bounds are developed, which improve on the known lower bounds for large minimum distances. The results of a computer search for permutation codes are also presented.

F-Saturation Games

We study F-saturation games, first introduced by Füredi, Reimer and Seress in 1991, and named as such by West. The main question is to determine the length of the game whilst avoiding various classes of graph, playing on a large complete graph. We show lower bounds on the length of path-avoiding games, and more precise results for short paths. We show sharp results for the tree avoiding game and the star avoiding game.

New $\mathcal{F}$-Saturation Games on Directed Graphs

We study analogues of $\mathcal{F}$-saturation games, first introduced by Furedi, Reimer and Seress in 1991, and named as such by West. We examine analogous games on directed graphs, and show tight results on the walk-avoiding game. We also examine an intermediate game played on undirected graphs, such that there exists an orientation avoiding a given family of directed graphs, and show bounds on the score. This last game is shown to be equivalent to a recent game studied by Hefetz, Krivelevich, Naor and Stojakovic, and we give new bounds for biased versions of this game.

Completing Partial Packings of Bipartite Graphs

Given a bipartite graph $H$ and an integer $n$, let $f(n;H)$ be the smallest integer such that, any set of edge disjoint copies of $H$ on $n$ vertices, can be extended to an $H$-design on at most $n+f(n;H)$ vertices. We establish tight bounds for the growth of $f(n;H)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. In particular, we prove the conjecture of Füredi and Lehel \cite{FuLe} that $f(n;H) = o(n)$. This settles a long-standing open problem.
