Extension problem for the fractional parabolic Lamé operator and unique continuation

In this paper, we introduce and analyse an explicit formulation of fractional powers of the parabolic Lamé operator $\mathbb{H}$ and we then study the extension problem associated to such non-local operators. We also study the various regularity properties of solutions to such an extension problem via a transformation which reduces the extension problem for the parabolic Lamé operator to another system that resembles the extension problem of the fractional heat operator. Finally in the case when $s \geq 1/2$, by proving a conditional doubling property for solutions to the corresponding reduced system followed by a blowup argument, we establish a space-like strong unique continuation result for $\mathbb{H}^s \textbf{u}=V\textbf{u}$.

On the space-like analyticity in the extension problem for nonlocal parabolic equations

In this note we give an elementary proof of the space-like real analyticity of solutions to a degenerate evolution problem that arises in the study of fractional parabolic operators of the type $(\partial_t - div_x(B(x)\nabla_x))^s$, $0<s<1$. Our primary interest is in the so-called \emph{extension variable}. We show that weak solutions that are even in such variable, are in fact real-analytic in the totality of the space variables. As an application of this result we prove the weak unique continuation property for nonlocal parabolic operators of the type above, where $B(x)$ is a uniformly elliptic matrix-valued function with real-analytic entries.

Quantitative uniqueness for fractional heat type operators

In this paper we obtain quantitative bounds on the maximal order of vanishing for solutions to $(\partial_t - Δ)^s u =Vu$ for $s\in [1/2, 1)$ via new Carleman estimates. Our main result Theorem 1.1 and Theorem 1.3 can be thought of as a parabolic generalization of the corresponding quantitative uniqueness result in the time independent case due to Rüland and it can also be regarded as a nonlocal generalization of a similar result due to Zhu for solutions to local parabolic equations.

Space-like quantitative uniqueness for parabolic operators

We obtain sharp maximal vanishing order at a given time level for solutions to parabolic equations with a $C{^1}$ potential $V$. Our main result Theorem 1.1 is a parabolic generalization of a well known result of Donnelly-Fefferman and Bakri. It also sharpens a previous result of Zhu that establishes similar vanishing order estimates which are instead averaged over time. The principal tool in our analysis is a new quantitative version of the well-known Escauriaza-Fernandez-Vessella type Carleman estimate that we establish in our setting.

Strong unique continuation for variable coefficient parabolic operators with Hardy type potential

In this paper, we prove the strong unique continuation property at the origin for solutions of the following scaling critical parabolic differential inequality \[ |\operatorname{div} (A(x,t) \nabla u) - u_t| \leq \frac{M}{|x|^{2}} |u|,\ \ \ \ \] where the coefficient matrix $A$ is Lipschitz continuous in $x$ and $t$. Our main result sharpens a previous one of Vessella concerned with the subcritical case as well as extends a recent result of one of us with Garofalo and Manna for the heat operator.

Lower semicontinuity and pointwise behavior of supersolutions for some doubly nonlinear nonlocal parabolic $p$-Laplace equations

We discuss pointwise behavior of weak supersolutions for a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic fractional $p$-Laplace equations which includes the fractional parabolic $p$-Laplace equation and the fractional porous medium equation. More precisely, we show that weak supersolutions have lower semicontinuous representative. We also prove that the semicontinuous representative at an instant of time is determined by the values at previous times. This gives a pointwise interpretation for a weak supersolution at every point. The corresponding results hold true also for weak subsolutions. Our results extend some recent results in the local parabolic case and in the nonlocal elliptic case to the nonlocal parabolic case. We prove the required energy estimates and measure theoretic De Giorgi type lemmas in the fractional setting.

Unified approach to $C^{1,α}$ regularity for quasilinear parabolic equations

In this paper, we are interested in obtaining a unified approach for $C^{1,α}$ estimates for weak solutions of quasilinear parabolic equations, the prototype example being \[ u_t - \text{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u) = 0. \] without having to consider the singular and degenerate cases separately. This is achieved via a new scaling and a delicate adaptation of the covering argument developed by E.~DiBenedetto and A.~Friedman.

On the finite $(Q-1)$-Hausdorff measure of the free boundary in the subelliptic obstacle problem

In this note, we prove the finite ${(Q-1)}$-Hausdorff measure of the free boundary in the obstacle problem in a Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$. Here, $Q$ represents the homogeneous dimension of $\mathbb{G}$. Our main result, Theorem 1.1, constitutes the subelliptic counterpart of the Euclidean result due to Caffarelli, but the analysis is complicated by the lack of commutation of the left-invariant vector fields. This obstruction is compensated by the use of right-invariant derivatives, and by a delicate compactness argument inspired to Caffarelli's fundamental works.

Regularity for parabolic systems with critical growth in the gradient and applications

Motivated by problems arising in geometric flows, we prove several regularity results for systems of local and nonlocal equations, adapting to the parabolic case a neat argument due to Caffarelli. The geometric motivation of this work comes from recent works arising in the theory harmonic maps with free boundary in particular. We prove Hölder regularity of weak solutions.

Higher regularity of the free boundary in the parabolic Signorini problem

We show that the quotient of two caloric functions which vanish on a portion of an $H^{k+ α}$ regular slit is $H^{k+ α}$ at the slit, for $k \geq 2$. In the case $k=1$, we show that the quotient is in $H^{1+α}$ if the slit is assumed to be space-time $C^{1, α}$ regular. This can be thought of as a parabolic analogue of a recent important result in [DSS14a], whose ideas inspired us. As an application, we show that the free boundary near a regular point of the parabolic thin obstacle problem studied in [DGPT] with zero obstacle is $C^{\infty}$ regular in space and time.

Quantitative uniqueness for elliptic equations at the boundary of $C^{1, Dini}$ domains

Based on a variant of the frequency function approach of Almgren, we establish an optimal upper bound on the vanishing order of solutions to variable coefficient Schrödinger equations at a portion of the boundary of a $C^{1,Dini}$ domain. Such bound provides a quantitative form of strong unique continuation at the boundary. It can be thought of as a boundary analogue of an interior result recently obtained by Bakri and Zhu for the standard Laplacian.

A parabolic analogue of the higher-order comparison theorem of De Silva and Savin

We show that the quotient of two caloric functions which vanish on a portion of the lateral boundary of a $H^{k+ α}$ domain is $H^{k+ α}$ up to the boundary for $k \geq 2$. In the case $k=1$, we show that the quotient is in $H^{1+α}$ if the domain is assumed to be space-time $C^{1, α}$ regular. This can be thought of as a parabolic analogue of a recent important result in [DS1], and we closely follow the ideas in that paper. We also give counterexamples to the fact that analogous results are not true at points on the parabolic boundary which are not on the lateral boundary, i.e., points which are at the corner and base of the parabolic boundary.

Modica type gradient estimates for reaction-diffusion equations and a parabolic counterpart of a conjecture of De Giorgi

We continue the study of Modica type gradient estimates for non-homogeneous parabolic equations initiated in \cite{BG}. First, we show that for the parabolic minimal surface equation with a semilinear force term if a certain gradient estimate is satisfied at $t=0$, then it holds for all later times $t>0$. We then establish analogous results for reaction-diffusion equations such as \eqref{e0} below in $\Om \times [0, T]$, where $\Om$ is an epigraph such that the mean curvature of $\partial \Om$ is nonnegative. We then turn our attention to settings where such gradient estimates are valid without any a priori information on whether the estimate holds at some earlier time. Quite remarkably (see Theorem \ref{main3}, Theorem \ref{main5} and Theorem \ref{T:ricci}), this is is true for $\Rn \times (-\infty, 0]$ and $\Om \times (-\infty, 0]$, where $\Om$ is an epigraph satisfying the geometric assumption mentioned above, and for $M \times (-\infty,0]$, where $M$ is a connected, compact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci tensor. As a consequence of the gradient estimate \eqref{mo2}, we establish a rigidity result (see Theorem \ref{main6} below) for solutions to \eqref{e0} which is the analogue of Theorem 5.1 in \cite{CGS}. Finally, motivated by Theorem \ref{main6}, we close the paper by proposing a parabolic version of the famous conjecture of De Giorgi also known as the $\ve$-version of the Bernstein theorem.

Modica type gradient estimates for an inhomogeneous variant of the normalized p-laplacian evolution

In this paper, we study an inhomogeneous variant of the normalized $p$-Laplacian evolution which has been recently treated in \cite{BG1}, \cite{Do}, \cite{MPR} and \cite{Ju}. We show that if the initial datum satisfies the pointwise gradient estimate \eqref{e:main1} a.e., then the unique solution to the Cauchy problem \eqref{main5} satisfies the same gradient estimate a.e. for all later times, see \eqref{e:main} below. A general pointwise gradient bound for the entire bounded solutions of the elliptic counterpart of equation \eqref{main5} was first obtained in \cite{CGS}. Such estimate generalizes one obtained by L. Modica for the Laplacian, and it has connections to a famous conjecture of De Giorgi.

Gradient bounds for p-harmonic systems with vanishing neumann data in a convex domain

Let $ \ti \Om $ be a bounded convex domain in Euclidean $ n $ space, $ \hat x \in \ar \ti \Om, $ and $ r > 0. $ Let $ \ti u = (\ti u^1, \ti u^2, \dots, \ti u^N) $ be a weak solution to \[\nabla \cdot \left (|\nabla \ti u |^{p-2} \nabla \ti u \right) = 0 \mbox{in} \ti \Om \cap B (\hat x, 4 r) \mbox{with} |\nabla \ti u|^{p-2} \, \ti u_ν= 0 \mbox{on} \ar \ti \Om \cap B (\hat x, 4 r). \] We show that sub solution type arguments for certain uniformly elliptic systems can be used to deduce that $ | \nabla \ti u | $ is bounded in $ \ti \Om \cap B (\hat x, r)$ with constants depending only on $ n, p, N. $ and $ \frac{r^n}{| \ti \Om \cap B (\hat x, r) |}.$ Our argument replaces an argument based on level sets in recent important work of [CM], [CM1], [GS], [M], [M1], involving similar problems.

Gradient bounds and monotonicity of the energy for some nonlinear singular diffusion equations

We construct viscosity solutions to the nonlinear evolution equation \eqref{p} below which generalizes the motion of level sets by mean curvature (the latter corresponds to the case $p = 1$) using the regularization scheme as in \cite{ES1} and \cite{SZ}. The pointwise properties of such solutions, namely the comparison principles, convergence of solutions as $p\to 1$, large-time behavior and unweighted energy monotonicity are studied. We also prove a notable monotonicity formula for the weighted energy, thus generalizing Struwe's famous monotonicity formula for the heat equation ($p =2$).
