Star vector fields on three-manifolds are multi-singular hyperbolic

The coexistence of singularities and regular orbits in chain transitive sets has been a major obstacle in understanding the hyperbolic/partial hyperbolic nature of robust dynamics. Notably, the vector fields with all periodic orbits robustly hyperbolic (star flows), are hyperbolic in absence of singularities. Morales, Pacifico and Pujals proposed a partial hyperbolicity called "singular hyperbolicity" that characterizes an open and dense subset of three dimensional star flows. In higher dimensions, Bonatti and da Luz characterize an open and dense set of star vector fields by multi-singular hyperbolicity. In this article, we prove that a vector field exhibiting all periodic orbits robustly of the same index is multi-singular hyperbolic, generalizing the previous results. As a corollary, we obtained that all three-dimensional star flows are multi-singular hyperbolic. Moreover, if all singularities in the same class exhibit the same index, the star flow is singular hyperbolic. Additionally, star flows with robust chain recurrence classes in any dimension are multisingular hyperbolic.

On the notions of singular domination and (multi-)singular hyperbolicity

The properties of uniform hyperbolicity and dominated splitting have been introduced to study the stability of the dynamics of diffeomorphisms. One meets difficulties when one tries to extend these definitions to vector fields and Shantao Liao has shown that it is more relevant to consider the linear Poincaré flow rather than the tangent flow in order to study the properties of the derivative. In this paper we define the notion of singular domination, an analog of the dominated splitting for the linear Poincaré flow which is robust under perturbations. Based on this, we give a new definition of multi-singular hyperbolicity which is equivalent to the one recently introduced by Bonatti-da Luz. The novelty of our definition is that it does not involve the blowup of the singular set and the renormalization cocycle of the linear flows.

Star flows with singularities of different indices

It is known that a generic star vector field $X$ on a $3$ or $4$-dimensional manifold is such that its chain recurrence classes are either hyperbolic, or singular hyperbolic ([MPP] and [GSW]). Palis conjectured that every vector field must be approximated either by singular hyperbolic vector fields or by vector fields with homoclinic tangencies or heterodimensional cycles (associated to periodic orbits). We give a counter example in dimension $5$ (and higher). We present here an open set of star vector fields on a $5$-dimensional manifold for which two singular points with different indices belong (robustly) to the same chain recurrence class. This prevents the class to be singular hyperbolic, showing that the results in [MPP] can not be extended to higher dimensions and thus contradicting the conjecture by Palis.

Hyperbolic sets that are not contained in a locally maximal one

In this paper we study two properties related to the structure of hyperbolic sets. First we construct new examples answering in the negative the following question posed by Katok and Hasselblatt. Let $Λ$ be a hyperbolic set, and let $V$ be an open neighborhood of $Λ$. Does there exist a locally maximal hyperbolic set $\widetildeΛ$ such that $Λ\subset \widetildeΛ \subset V $? We show that such examples are present in linear anosov diffeomorophisms of $\mathbb{T}^3$, and are therefore robust. Also we construct new examples of sets that are not contained in any locally maximal hyperbolic set. The examples known until now were constructed by Crovisier and by Fisher, and these were either in dimension bigger than 4 or they were not transitive. We give a transitive and robust example in $\mathbb{T}^3$. And show that such examples cannot be build in dimension 2.
