Stratospheric planetary flows from the perspective of the Euler equation on a rotating sphere

This article is devoted to stationary solutions of Euler's equation on a rotating sphere, and to their relevance to the dynamics of stratospheric flows in the atmosphere of the outer planets of our solar system and in polar regions of the Earth. For the Euler equation, under appropriate conditions, rigidity results are established, ensuring that the solutions are either zonal or rotated zonal solutions. A natural analogue of Arnold's stability criterion is proved. In both cases, the lowest mode Rossby-Haurwitz stationary solutions (more precisely, those whose stream functions belong to the sum of the first two eigenspaces of the Laplace-Beltrami operator) appear as limiting cases. We study the stability properties of these critical stationary solutions. Results on the local and global bifurcation of non-zonal stationary solutions from classical Rossby-Haurwitz waves are also obtained. Finally, we show that stationary solutions of the Euler equation on a rotating sphere are building blocks for travelling-wave solutions of the 3D system that describes the leading order dynamics of stratospheric planetary flows, capturing the characteristic decrease of density and increase of temperature with height in this region of the atmosphere.

Global bifurcation of steady gravity water waves with critical layers

We construct large families of two-dimensional travelling water waves propagating under the influence of gravity in a flow of constant vorticity over a flat bed. A Riemann-Hilbert problem approach is used to recast the governing equations as a one-dimensional elliptic pseudo-differential equation with a scalar constraint. The structural properties of this formulation, which arises as the Euler-Lagrange equation of an energy functional, enable us to develop a theory of analytic global bifurcation.

Inverse Scattering Transform for the Degasperis-Procesi Equation

We develop the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) method for the Degasperis-Procesi equation. The spectral problem is an $\mathfrak{sl}(3)$ Zakharov-Shabat problem with constant boundary conditions and finite reduction group. The basic aspects of the IST such as the construction of fundamental analytic solutions, the formulation of a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and the implementation of the dressing method are presented.

Steady periodic water waves with constant vorticity: regularity and local bifurcation

This paper studies periodic traveling gravity waves at the free surface of water in a flow of constant vorticity over a flat bed. Using conformal mappings the free-boundary problem is transformed into a quasilinear pseudodifferential equation for a periodic function of one variable. The new formulation leads to a regularity result and, by use of bifurcation theory, to the existence of waves of small amplitude even in the presence of stagnation points in the flow.

Effect of non-zero constant vorticity on the nonlinear resonances of capillary water waves

The influence of an underlying current on 3-wave interactions of capillary water waves is studied. The fact that in irrotational flow resonant 3-wave interactions are not possible can be invalidated by the presence of an underlying current of constant non-zero vorticity. We show that: 1) wave trains in flows with constant non-zero vorticity are possible only for two-dimensional flows; 2) only positive constant vorticities can trigger the appearance of three-wave resonances; 3) the number of positive constant vorticities which do trigger a resonance is countable; 4) the magnitude of a positive constant vorticity triggering a resonance can not be too small.

Geodesic Flow on the Diffeomorphism Group of the circle

We show that certain right-invariant metrics endow the infinite-dimensional Lie group of all smooth orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle with a Riemannian structure. The study of the Riemannian exponential map allows us to prove infinite-dimensional counterparts of results from classical Riemannian geometry: the Riemannian exponential map is a smooth local diffeomorphism and the length-minimizing property of the geodesics holds.
