Dressed quark-gluon vertex form factors from gauge symmetry

We present preliminary results on the longitudinal $and$ transverse form factors of the quark-gluon vertex as functions of the incoming and outgoing quark momenta and an angle $θ=2π/3$ between them. The expressions for these form factors were previously derived from Slavnov-Taylor identities, gauge covariance and multiplicative renormalizability that firmly constrain the fermion-boson vertex.

Dyson-Schwinger equations and the muon g-2

We present a brief introduction to the Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) approach to hadron and high-energy physics. In particular, how this formalism is applied to calculate the electromagnetic form factors $γ^* γ^* \to \textbf{P}^0$ and $γ^* \textbf{P}^\pm \to \textbf{P}^\pm$ (with $\textbf{P}^\pm$ and $\textbf{P}^0$ charged and neutral ground-state pseudoscalar mesons, respectively) is discussed. Subsequently, the corresponding contributions of those form factors to the muon anomalous magnetic moment ($g-2$) are estimated. We look forward to promoting the DSE approach to address theoretical aspects of the muon $g-2$, highlighting some calculations that could be carried out in the future.

Pion and Kaon box contribution to $a_μ^{\text{HLbL}}$

We present an evaluation of the $π^\pm$ and $K^\pm$ box contributions to the hadronic light-by-light piece of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ$. The calculation of the corresponding electromagnetic form factors (EFFs) is performed within a Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE) approach to quantum chromodynamics. These form factors are calculated in the so-called rainbow-ladder (RL) truncation, following two different evaluation methods and, subsequently, in a further improved approximation scheme which incorporates meson cloud effects. The results are mutually consistent, indicating that in the domain of relevance for $a_μ$ the obtained EFFs are practically equivalent. Our analysis yields the combined estimates of $a_μ^{π^\pm-box}=-(15.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-11}$ and $a_μ^{K^\pm-\text{box}}=-(0.48\pm 0.02)\times 10^{-11}$, in full agreement with results previously obtained within the DSE formalism and other contemporary estimates.

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin Transformations, Nielsen Identities, Their Equivalence and Implications for QCD

The Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations (LKFTs) represent an important tool for probing the gauge dependence of the correlation functions within the class of linear covariant gauges. Recently these transformations have been derived from first principles in the context of non-Abelian gauge theory (QCD) introducing a gauge invariant transverse gauge field expressible as an infinite power series in a Stueckelberg field. In this work we explicitly calculate the transformation for the gluon propagator, reproducing its dependence on the gauge parameter at the one loop level and elucidating the role of the extra fields involved in this theoretical framework. Later on, employing a unifying scheme based upon the BRST symmetry and a resulting generalized Slavnov-Taylor identity, we establish the equivalence between the LKFTs and the Nielsen identities which are also known to connect results in different gauges.

Pion and Kaon Structure at the Electron-Ion Collider

Understanding the origin and dynamics of hadron structure and in turn that of atomic nuclei is a central goal of nuclear physics. This challenge entails the questions of how does the roughly 1 GeV mass-scale that characterizes atomic nuclei appear; why does it have the observed value; and, enigmatically, why are the composite Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) abnormally light in comparison? In this perspective, we provide an analysis of the mass budget of the pion and proton in QCD; discuss the special role of the kaon, which lies near the boundary between dominance of strong and Higgs mass-generation mechanisms; and explain the need for a coherent effort in QCD phenomenology and continuum calculations, in exa-scale computing as provided by lattice QCD, and in experiments to make progress in understanding the origins of hadron masses and the distribution of that mass within them. We compare the unique capabilities foreseen at the electron-ion collider (EIC) with those at the hadron-electron ring accelerator (HERA), the only previous electron-proton collider; and describe five key experimental measurements, enabled by the EIC and aimed at delivering fundamental insights that will generate concrete answers to the questions of how mass and structure arise in the pion and kaon, the Standard Model's NG modes, whose surprisingly low mass is critical to the evolution of our Universe.

$η_{c}$ Elastic and Transition Form Factors: Contact Interaction and Algebraic Model

For the flavor-singlet heavy quark system of charmonia in the pseudoscalar ($η_c(1S)$) channel, we calculate the elastic (EFF) and transition form factors (TFF) ($η_c(1S) \rightarrow γγ^*$) for a wide range of photon momentum transfer squared ($Q^2$). The framework for this analysis is provided by a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) and Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) treatment of a vector$\times$vector contact interaction (CI). We also employ an algebraic model (AM), developed earlier to describe the light quark systems. It correctly correlates infrared and ultraviolet dynamics of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The CI results agree with the lattice data for low $Q^2$. For $Q^2 \geqslant Q_0^2$, the results start deviating from the lattice results by more than $20 \%$. $Q_0^2 \thickapprox 2.5 {\rm GeV}^2$ for the EFF and $\thickapprox 25 {\rm GeV}^2$ for the TFF. We also present the results for the EFF, TFF as well as $η_c(1S)$ parton distribution amplitude for the AM. Wherever the comparison is possible, these results are in excellent agreement with the lattice, perturbative QCD, the results obtained through an SDE-BSE study, employing refined truncations, as well as the experimental findings of the BABAR experiment.

Multiphoton amplitudes and generalized LKF transformation in Scalar QED

We apply the worldline formalism to amplitudes in scalar quantum electrodynamics (QED) involving open scalar lines, with an emphasis on their non-perturbative gauge dependence. At the tree-level, we study the scalar propagator interacting with any number of photons in configuration space as well as in momentum space. At one-loop we rederive, in an efficient way, the off-shell vertex in an arbitrary dimension and any covariant gauge. Generalizing the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT) for the non-perturbative propagator, we find simple non-perturbative transformation rules for arbitrary x-space amplitudes under a change of the covariant gauge parameter in terms of conformal cross ratios.

The effective QCD phase diagram and the critical end point

We study the QCD phase diagram on the plane of temperature T and quark chemical potential mu, modelling the strong interactions with the linear sigma model coupled to quarks. The phase transition line is found from the effective potential at finite T and mu taking into accounts the plasma screening effects. We find the location of the critical end point (CEP) to be (mu^CEP/T_c,T^CEP/T_c) sim (1.2,0.8), where T_c is the (pseudo)critical temperature for the crossover phase transition at vanishing mu. This location lies within the region found by lattice inspired calculations. The results show that in the linear sigma model, the CEP's location in the phase diagram is expectedly determined solely through chiral symmetry breaking. The same is likely to be true for all other models which do not exhibit confinement, provided the proper treatment of the plasma infrared properties for the description of chiral symmetry restoration is implemented. Similarly, we also expect these corrections to be substantially relevant in the QCD phase diagram.

The QCD phase diagram from Schwinger-Dyson Equations

We study the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). For this purpose we employ the Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDEs) technique and construct a truncation of the infinite tower of equations by demanding a matching with the lattice results for the quark-anti-quark condensate at finite temperature (T), for zero quark chemical potential (mu), that is, the region where lattice calculations are expected to provide reliable results. We compute the evolution of the phase diagram away from T=0 for increasing values of the chemical potential by following the evolution of the heat capacity as a function of T and mu. The behavior of this thermodynamic variable clearly demonstrates the existence of a cross-over for mu less than a critical value. However, the heat capacity develops a singularity near mu approx 0.22 GeV marking the onslaught of a first order phase transition characterized by the existence of a critical point. The critical line continues until mu approx 0.53 GeV where Tc=0 and thus chiral symmetry is finally restored.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Confinement Beyond Rainbow-Ladder Truncation

A non-perturbative construction of the 3-point fermion-boson vertex which obeys its Ward-Takahashi or Slavnov-Taylor identity, ensures the massless fermion and boson propagators transform according to their local gauge covariance relations, reproduces perturbation theory in the weak coupling regime and provides a gauge independent description for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) and confinement has been a long-standing goal in physically relevant gauge theories such as quantum electrodynamics (QED) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this paper, we demonstrate that the same simple and practical form of the vertex can achieve these objectives not only in 4-dimensional quenched QED (qQED4) but also in its 3-dimensional counterpart (qQED3). Employing this convenient form of the vertex \emph{ansatz} into the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator, we observe that it renders the critical coupling in qQED4 markedly gauge independent in contrast with the bare vertex and improves on the well-known Curtis-Pennington construction. Furthermore, our proposal yields gauge independent order parameters for confinement and DCSB in qQED3.

Pion and kaon valence-quark parton distribution functions

A rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations, constrained by existing applications to hadron physics, is employed to compute the valence-quark parton distribution functions of the pion and kaon. Comparison is made to pi-N Drell-Yan data for the pion's u-quark distribution and to Drell-Yan data for the ratio u_K(x)/u_π(x): the environmental influence of this quantity is a parameter-free prediction, which agrees well with existing data. Our analysis unifies the computation of distribution functions with that of numerous other properties of pseudoscalar mesons.

QCD phase diagram from finite energy sum rules

We study the QCD phase diagram at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential by relating the behavior of the light-quark condensate to the threshold energy for the onset of perturbative QCD. These parameters are connected to the chiral symmetry restoration and the deconfinement phase transition, respectively. This relation is obtained in the framework of finite energy QCD sum rules at finite temperature and density, with input from Schwinger-Dyson methods to determine the light-quark condensate. Results indicate that both critical temperatures are basically the same within some 3% accuracy. We also obtain bounds for the position of the critical end point, mu_{B c} >~ 300 MeV and T_c <~ 185 MeV.

Chiral and Parity Symmetry Breaking for Planar Fermions: Effects of a Heat Bath and Uniform External Magnetic Field

We study chiral symmetry breaking for relativistic fermions, described by a parity violating Lagrangian in 2+1-dimensions, in the presence of a heat bath and a uniform external magnetic field. Working within their four-component formalism allows for the inclusion of both parity-even and -odd mass terms. Therefore, we can define two types of fermion anti-fermion condensates. For a given value of the magnetic field, there exist two different critical temperatures which would render one of these condensates identically zero, while the other would survive. Our analysis is completely general: it requires no particular simplifying hierarchy among the energy scales involved, namely, bare masses, field strength and temperature. However, we do reproduce some earlier results, obtained or anticipated in literature, corresponding to special kinematical regimes for the parity conserving case. Relating the chiral condensate to the one-loop effective Lagrangian, we also obtain the magnetization and the pair production rate for different fermion species in a uniform electric field through the replacement $B\to-iE$.

Chiral phase transition in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with weak magnetic fields: ring diagrams in the linear sigma model

Working in the linear sigma model with quarks, we compute the finite-temperature effective potential in the presence of a weak magnetic field, including the contribution of the pion ring diagrams and considering the sigma as a classical field. In the approximation where the pion self-energy is computed perturbatively, we show that there is a region of the parameter space where the effect of the ring diagrams is to preclude the phase transition from happening. Inclusion of the magnetic field has small effects that however become more important as the system evolves to the lowest temperatures allowed in the analysis.

Impact of a uniform magnetic field and nonzero temperature on explicit chiral symmetry breaking in QED: Arbitrary hierarchy of energy scales

Employing the Schwinger's proper-time method, we calculate the $<\barψ ψ>$-condensate for massive Dirac fermions of charge $e$ interacting with a uniform magnetic field in a heat bath. We present general results for arbitrary hierarchy of the energy scales involved, namely, the fermion mass $m$, the magnetic field strength $\sqrt{eB}$ and temperature $T$. Moreover, we study particular regimes in detail and reproduce some of the results calculated or anticipated earlier in the literature. We also discuss possible applications of our findings.
