Computations of general Heun functions from their integral series representations

We present a numerical implementation of the recently developed unconditionally convergent representation of general Heun functions as integral series. We produce two codes in Python available for download, one of which is especially aimed at reproducing the output of Mathematica's HeunG function. We show that the present code compares favorably with Mathematica's HeunG and with an Octave/Matlab code of Motygin, in particular when the Heun function is to be evaluated at a large number of points if less accuracy is sufficient. We suggest further improvements concerning the accuracy and discuss the issue of singularities.

Quasinormal mode frequencies of Kerr black holes from Regge trajectories

A large portion of the studies concerning the quasinormal mode frequencies of a Kerr black hole have focused only on achieving higher numerical accuracy with limited emphasis on providing their physical interpretation. In this article, we partially address this issue by computing the quasinormal mode frequency spectrum of a Kerr black hole using the theory of Regge poles. By considering the retarded Green's function of the Teukolsky equation, we establish for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations an equation linking the Regge poles to the quasinormal frequencies and we solve it in the high-frequency regime to get "semiclassical" relations permitting us to obtain the complex frequencies of the weakly damped quasinormal modes from the Regge trajectories. Numerical results concerning gravitational perturbations ($s=-2$) are displayed. They are in excellent agreement with the "exact" ones in the eikonal regime $(\ell \gg 1)$ and in very good agreement even for lower values of $\ell$. Moreover, the splitting of each Regge pole of the Schwarzschild black hole into an infinite number of Kerr Regge poles explains the breaking of the azimuthal degeneracy of the quasinormal frequencies of the Schwarzschild black hole due to rotation. Our work is a first step to extend to Kerr black holes the approach developed for static spherically symmetric black holes which allowed, from a geometrical interpretation of the Regge poles in terms of the properties of the unstable circular null geodesics lying on the photon sphere, to derive accurate analytical formulas for the Regge trajectories and, as a by-product, for the complex frequencies of the weakly damped quasinormal modes.

On Challenges to Separability of the Dirac Equation in Kerr Geometry under Compact Hyperboloidal Coordinates

The Dirac equation governs the behaviour of spin-1/2 particles. The equation's separability into decoupled radial and angular differential equations is a crucial step in analytical and numerical computations of quantities like eigenvalues, quasinormal modes and bound states. However, this separation has been performed in co-ordinate systems that are not well-behaved in either limiting regions of $r \rightarrow r_{horizon}$, $r \rightarrow r_\infty$ or both. In particular, the extensively used Boyer-Lindquist co-ordinates contains unphysical features of spacetime geometry for both $r_{horizon}$ and $r_\infty$. Therefore, motivated by the recently developed compact hyperboloidal co-ordinate system for Kerr Black Holes that is well behaved in these limiting regions, we attempt the separation of the Dirac equation. We first construct a null tetrad suitable for the separability analysis under the Newman-Penrose formalism. Then, an unexpected result is shown that by using the standard separability procedure based on the mode ansatz under this tetrad, the Dirac equation does not decouple into radial and angular equationsPossible reasons for this behaviour as well as importance of proving separability for various computations are discussed.
