Field-Theoretic Analysis of Hadronization Using Soft Drop Jet Mass

One of the greatest challenges in quantum chromodynamics is understanding the hadronization mechanism, which is also crucial for carrying out precision physics with jet substructure. In this Letter, we combine recent advancements in our understanding of the field theory-based nonperturbative structure of the soft drop jet mass with precise perturbative calculations of its multi-differential variants at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. This enables a systematic study of its hadronization power corrections in a completely model-independent way. We calibrate and test hadronization models and their interplay with parton showers by comparing our universality predictions with various event generators for quark and gluon initiated jets in both lepton-lepton and hadron-hadron collisions. We find that hadronization models perform better for quark jets relative to gluon jets. Our results provide the necessary toolkit for precision studies with the soft drop jet mass motivating future analyses using real world collider data. The nontrivial constraints derived in our framework are useful for improving the modeling of hadronization and its interface with parton showers in next generation event generators.

A new form of QCD coherence for multiple soft emissions using Glauber-SCET

The amplitude for multiple soft gluon emissions, ordered in their relative softness, can be written as a product of infrared (IR) divergent loop-expanded soft gluon currents and the matrix elements. In a more recent work, Angeles-Martinez, Forshaw and Seymour \cite{Angeles-Martinez:2016dph} (AMFS) showed that the result for this amplitude can in fact be re-expressed in an ordered evolution approach, involving \textit{IR finite} one-loop insertions where the virtual loop momentum is constrained in a highly non-trivial way by the $k_T$ of the adjacent real emissions. The result thus exhibits a novel amplitude level QCD coherence where the IR divergences originating only from the very last, softest, gluon emission remain, and the rest cancel. The proof of the AMFS result at one-loop in QCD, however, involves many diagrams, and only after carefully grouping and summing over all the diagrams does the correct ordering variable emerge, making the higher order extension a challenging task. Moreover, the compact, Markovian nature of the final AMFS result is suggestive of a deeper underlying physics that is obscured in the derivation using traditional diagrammatic QCD. By considering a (recursive) sequence of effective field theories (EFTs) with Glauber-SCET operators, we present an elegant derivation of this result involving only a handful of diagrams. The SCET derivation offers clean physical insights, and makes a higher order extension of the AMFS result tractable. We also show that the grouping of QCD graphs necessary to derive the AMFS result in full theory is already implicit in the Feynman rules of Glauber-SCET operators such that the same result can alternatively be derived with significantly less effort in a single EFT with multiple ordered soft gluon emissions.

Hard Matching for Boosted Tops at Two Loops

Cross sections for top quarks provide very interesting physics opportunities, being both sensitive to new physics and also perturbatively tractable due to the large top quark mass. Rigorous factorization theorems for top cross sections can be derived in several kinematic scenarios, including the boosted regime in the peak region that we consider here. In the context of the corresponding factorization theorem for $e^+e^-$ collisions we extract the last missing ingredient that is needed to evaluate the cross section differential in the jet-mass at two-loop order, namely the matching coefficient at the scale $μ\simeq m_t$. Our extraction also yields the final ingredients needed to carry out logarithmic resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order (or N$^3$LL if we ignore the missing 4-loop cusp anomalous dimension). This coefficient exhibits an amplitude level rapidity logarithm starting at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ due to virtual top quark loops, which we treat using rapidity renormalization group (RG) evolution. Interestingly, this rapidity RG evolution appears in the matching coefficient between two effective theories around the heavy quark mass scale $μ\simeq m_t$.
