Inhomogeneous condensation in effective models for QCD using the finite-mode approach

We use a numerical method, the finite-mode approach, to study inhomogeneous condensation in effective models for QCD in a general framework. Former limitations of considering a specific ansatz for the spatial dependence of the condensate are overcome. Different error sources are analyzed and strategies to minimize or eliminate them are outlined. The analytically known results for $1+1$ dimensional models (such as the Gross-Neveu model and extensions of it) are correctly reproduced using the finite-mode approach. Moreover, the NJL model in $3+1$ dimensions is investigated and its phase diagram is determined with particular focus on the inhomogeneous phase at high density.

Chiral density wave in nuclear matter

Inspired by recent work on inhomogeneous chiral condensation in cold, dense quark matter within models featuring quark degrees of freedom, we investigate the chiral density-wave solution in nu- clear matter at zero temperature and nonvanishing baryon number density in the framework of the so-called extended linear sigma model (eLSM). The eLSM is an effective model for the strong interaction based on the global chiral symmetry of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). It contains scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons as well as baryons. In the latter sector, the nucleon and its chiral partner are introduced as parity doublets in the mirror assignment. The eLSM simultaneously provides a good description of hadrons in vacuum as well as nuclear matter ground-state properties. We find that an inhomogeneous phase in the form of a chiral density wave is realized, but only for densities larger than 2.4 ρ0, where ρ0 is the nuclear matter ground-state density.

Inhomogeneous condensates in the parity doublet model

Within the parity doublet model coupled to the linear sigma model including vector mesons it is possible to describe vacuum properties of the low energy mesons and to achieve nuclear saturation at nonzero density. Motivated by recent studies we investigate the emergence of inhomogeneous condensation in the parity doublet model. As a first step the chiral density wave (CDW) is con- sidered, which allows for a straightforward investigation of inhomogeneous condensation. As a result it is still possible to have a homogeneous ground state of nuclear matter, but at larger baryon chemical potential the CDW is favored with respect to the homogeneous phase.

Phenomenological improvement of the linear-$σ$ model in the large-N_c limit

The linear-$σ$ model has been widely used to describe the chiral phase transition. Numerically, the critical temperature $T_{c}$ of the chiral phase transition is in agreement with other effective theories of QCD. However, in the large-$N_{c}$ limit $T_{c}$ scales as $\sqrt{N_{c}}$ which is not in line with the NJL model and with basic expectations of QCD, according to which $T_{c}$ is --just as the deconfinement phase transition- $N_{c}$-independent. This mismatch can be corrected by a phenomenologically motivated temperature dependent parameter.

Restoration of chiral symmetry in the large-N_c limit

We study the large-N_c behavior of the critical temperature T_c for chiral symmetry restoration in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model and the linear σ-model. While in the NJL case T_c scales as N_c^0 and is, as expected, of the same order as Λ_QCD (just as the deconfinement phase transition), in the σ-model the scaling behavior reads T_c \propto N_c^1/2. We investigate the origin of the different scaling behavior and present two improvements of the σ-model: (i) a simple, phenomenologically motivated temperature dependence of the parameters and (ii) the coupling to the Polyakov loop. Both approaches lead to the scaling T_c \propto N_c^0.

Light tetraquark state at nonzero temperature

We study the implications of a light tetraquark on the chiral phase transition at nonzero temperature $T$: The behavior of the chiral and four-quark condensates and the meson masses are studied in the scenario in which the resonance $f_{0}(600)$ is described as a predominantly tetraquark state. It is shown that the critical temperature is lowered and the transition softened. Interesting mixing effects between tetraquark, and quarkonium configurations take place.
