Masses of Doubly Heavy Tetraquarks with Error Bars

In the heavy-quark limit, the two heavy quarks in a doubly heavy baryon or a doubly heavy tetraquark are bound by their color-Coulomb potential into a compact diquark. The doubly heavy hadrons are related by the approximate heavy-quark--diquark symmetry of QCD to the heavy hadrons obtained by replacing the heavy diquark by a heavy antiquark. Effective field theories can be used to expand the masses of singly heavy hadrons and doubly heavy hadrons in inverse powers of the heavy quark masses. The coefficients in the expansions for doubly heavy tetraquarks can be determined from those for heavy mesons, heavy baryons, and doubly heavy baryons using heavy-quark--diquark symmetry. We predict the masses of the ground-state doubly heavy tetraquarks with error bars using as inputs the masses of heavy mesons and heavy baryons measured in experiments and the masses of doubly heavy baryons calculated using lattice QCD. The only doubly heavy tetraquarks predicted to be stable with respect to strong decays are $bb$ tetraquarks with light flavor $\bar u \bar d$, $\bar s \bar u$ and $\bar s \bar d$.

Operator Counting and Soft Blocks in Chiral Perturbation Theory

Chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) is a low-energy effective field theory of QCD and also a nonlinear sigma model based on the symmetry breaking pattern ${\rm SU}(N_f)\times {\rm SU}(N_f)\to {\rm SU}(N_f)$. In the limit of massless $N_f$ quarks, we enumerate the independent operators without external sources in ChPT using an on-shell method, by counting and presenting the soft blocks at each order in the derivative expansion, up to ${\cal O}(p^{10})$. Given the massless on-shell condition and total momentum conservation, soft blocks are homogeneous polynomials of kinematic invariants exhibiting the Adler's zero when any external momentum becomes soft and vanishing. In addition, soft blocks are seeds for recursively generating all tree amplitudes of Nambu-Goldstone bosons without recourse to ChPT, and in one-to-one correspondence with the "low energy constants" which are the Wilson coefficients. Relations among operators, such as those arising from equations of motion, integration-by-parts, hermiticity, and symmetry structure, manifest themselves in the soft blocks in simple ways. We find agreements with the existing results up to NNNLO, and make a prediction at N$^4$LO.

Dense Axion Stars

If the dark matter particles are axions, gravity can cause them to coalesce into axion stars, which are stable gravitationally bound systems of axions. In the previously known solutions for axion stars, gravity and the attractive force between pairs of axions are balanced by the kinetic pressure. The mass of these dilute axion stars cannot exceed a critical mass, which is about $10^{-14} M_\odot$ if the axion mass is $10^{-4}$~eV. We study axion stars using a simple approximation to the effective potential of the nonrelativistic effective field theory for axions. We find a new branch of dense axion stars in which gravity is balanced by the mean-field pressure of the axion Bose-Einstein condensate. The mass on this branch ranges from about $10^{-20} M_\odot$ to about $M_\odot$. If a dilute axion star with the critical mass accretes additional axions and collapses, it could produce a bosenova, leaving a dense axion star as the remnant.

Nonrelativistic Effective Field Theory for Axions

Axions can be described by a relativistic field theory with a real scalar field $ϕ$ whose self-interaction potential is a periodic function of $ϕ$. Low-energy axions, such as those produced in the early universe by the vacuum misalignment mechanism, can be described more simply by a nonrelativistic effective field theory with a complex scalar field $ψ$ whose effective potential is a function of $ψ^*ψ$. We determine the coefficients in the expansion of the effective potential to fifth order in $ψ^*ψ$ by matching low-energy axion scattering amplitudes. In order to describe a Bose-Einstein condensate of axions that is too dense to expand the effective potential in powers of $ψ^*ψ$, we develop a sequence of systematically improvable approximations to the effective potential that include terms of all orders in $ψ^*ψ$.

Harmonic and Subharmonic Association and Dissociation of Universal Dimers in a Thermal Gas

In a gas of ultracold atoms whose scattering length is controlled by a magnetic Feshbach resonance, atoms can be associated into universal dimers by an oscillating magnetic field. In addition to the harmonic resonance with frequency near that determined by the dimer binding energy, there is a subharmonic resonance with half that frequency. If the thermal gas contains dimers, they can be dissociated into unbound atoms by the oscillating magnetic field. We show that the transition rates for association and dissociation can be calculated by treating the oscillating magnetic field as a sinusoidal time-dependent perturbation proportional to the contact operator. Many-body effects are taken into account through transition matrix elements of the contact operator. We calculate both the harmonic and subharmonic transition rates analytically for association in a thermal gas of atoms and dissociation in a thermal gas of dimers.
