Large-scale Ferrofluid Simulations on Graphics Processing Units

We present an approach to molecular-dynamics simulations of ferrofluids on graphics processing units (GPUs). Our numerical scheme is based on a GPU-oriented modification of the Barnes-Hut (BH) algorithm designed to increase the parallelism of computations. For an ensemble consisting of one million of ferromagnetic particles, the performance of the proposed algorithm on a Tesla M2050 GPU demonstrated a computational-time speed-up of four order of magnitude compared to the performance of the sequential All-Pairs (AP) algorithm on a single-core CPU, and two order of magnitude compared to the performance of the optimized AP algorithm on the GPU. The accuracy of the scheme is corroborated by comparing the results of numerical simulations with theoretical predictions.

Resonant suppression of thermal stability of the nanoparticle magnetization by a rotating magnetic field

We study the thermal stability of the periodic (P) and quasi-periodic (Q) precessional modes of the nanoparticle magnetic moment induced by a rotating magnetic field. An analytical method for determining the lifetime of the P mode in the case of high anisotropy barrier and small amplitudes of the rotating field is developed within the Fokker-Planck formalism. In general case, the thermal stability of both P and Q modes is investigated by numerical simulation of the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz equation. We show analytically and numerically that the lifetime is a nonmonotonic function of the rotating field frequency which, depending on the direction of field rotation, has either a pronounced maximum or a deep minimum near the Larmor frequency.

Multi-photon resonances in pure multiple-pulse NQR

We have observed multi-photon resonances in a system with a spin 3/2 irradiated simultaneously by a multiple pulse radiofrequency sequence and a low frequency field swept in the range 0-80 kHz. The used excitation scheme allowed us to measure the effective field of the radiofrequency sequence. A peculiarity of this scheme is that the intensity of the resonance lines decreases slowly with the mode number. The theoretical description of the effect is presented using both the rotating frame approximation and the Floquet theory. Both approaches give indentical results at the calculation of the resonance frequencies, transition probabilities and shifts of resonance frequency. The calculated magnetization vs. the frequency of the low-frequency field agrees well with the obtained experimental data. The multi-frequency spectra give a way for studying slow atomic motion in solids.
