Sadovskii vortex in a wedge and the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem on a torus

Reconstruction of conformal mappings from canonical slit domains onto multiply-connected physical domains with a free boundary is of interest in many different models arising in fluid mechanics. In the present paper, an exact formula for the conformal map from the exterior of two slits onto the doubly connected flow domain is obtained when a fluid flows in a wedge about a Sadovskii vortex. The map is employed to determine the potential flow outside the vortex and the vortex domain boundary provided the circulation $Γ$ around the vortex and constant speed $U$ on the vortex boundary are prescribed, and there are no stagnation points on the walls. The map is expressed in terms of a rational function on an elliptic surface topologically equivalent to a torus and the solution to a symmetric Riemann-Hilbert problem on a finite and a semi-infinite segments on the same genus-1 Riemann surface. Owing to its special features, the Riemann-Hilbert problem requires a novel analogue of the Cauchy kernel on an elliptic surface. Such a kernel is proposed and employed to derive a closed-form solution to the Riemann-Hilbert problem and the associated Jacobi inversion problem. The final formula for the conformal map possesses a free geometric parameter and two model parameters, the wedge angle $α$ and $Γ/U$. It is shown that when $α<π$ the solution exists and the vortex has two cusps, while the solution does not exist when the wedge angle exceeds $π$.

Modeling of a curvilinear planar crack with a curvature-dependent surface tension

IAn approach to modeling fracture incorporating interfacial mechanics is applied to the example of a curvilinear plane strain crack. The classical Neumann boundary condition is augmented with curvature-dependent surface tension. It is shown that the considered model eliminates the integrable crack-tip stress and strain singularities of order 1/2 present in the classical linear fracture mechanics solutions, and also leads to the sharp crack opening that is consistent with empirical observations. Unlike for the case of a straight crack, for a general curvilinear crack some components of the stresses and the derivatives of the displacements may still possess weaker singularities of a logarithmic type. Generalizations of the present study that lead to complete removal of all crack-tip singularities, including logarithmic, are the subject of a future paper.

Reinforcement of a plate weakened by multiple holes with several patches for different types of a plate-patch attachment

The most general situation of the reinforcement of a plate with multiple holes by several patches is considered. There is no restriction on the number and the location of the patches. Two types of the patch attachment are considered: only along the boundary of the patch or both along the boundary of the patch and the boundaries of the holes which this patch covers. The unattached boundaries of the holes may be loaded with given in-plane stresses. The mechanical problem is reduced to the system of singular integral equations which can be further reduced to the system of Fredholm equations. A new numerical procedure for the solution of the system of singular integral equations is proposed in this paper. It can be observed that this procedure provides a noticeable improvement from the one presented in Zemlyanova \cite{Zem2007}, Zemlyanova and Silvestrov \cite{ZemSil2007}, \cite{ZemSil2009} and allows to achieve a significantly better numerical convergence with less computational effort.

The effect of a curvature-dependent surface tension on the singularities at the tips of a straight interface crack

A problem of an interface crack between two semi-planes made out of different materials under an action of an in-plane loading of general tensile-shear type is treated in a semi-analytical manner with the help of Dirichlet-to-Neumann mappings. The boundaries of the crack and the interface between semi-planes are subjected to a curvature-dependent surface tension. The resulting system of six singular integro-differential equations is reduced to the system of three Fredholm equations. It is shown that the introduction of the curvature-dependent surface tension eliminates both classical integrable power singularity of the order 1/2 and an oscillating singularity present in a classical linear elasticity solutions. The numerical results are obtained by solving the original system of singular integro-differential equations by approximating unknown functions with Taylor polynomials.
