Propagation peculiarities of mean field massive gravity

Massive gravity (mGR) describes a dynamical "metric" on a fiducial, background one. We investigate fluctuations of the dynamics about mGR solutions, that is about its "mean field theory". Analyzing mean field massive gravity propagation characteristics is not only equivalent to studying those of the full non-linear theory, but also in direct correspondence with earlier analyses of charged higher spin systems, the oldest example being the charged, massive spin 3/2 Rarita--Schwinger (RS) theory. The fiducial and mGR mean field background metrics in the mean field mGR model correspond to the RS Minkowski metric and external EM field. The common implications in both systems are that hyperbolicity holds only in a weak background-mean-field limit, immediately ruling both theories out as fundamental theories. Although both can still be considered as predictive effective models in the weak regime, their lower helicities exhibit superluminal behavior: lower helicity gravitons are superluminal as compared to photons propagating on either the fiducial or background metric. This "crystal-like" phenomenon of differing helicities having differing propagation speeds in both mean field mGR and mGR is a peculiar feature of these models.

Quantum Gravity and Causal Structures: Second Quantization of Conformal Dirac Algebras

It is postulated that quantum gravity is a sum over causal structures coupled to matter via scale evolution. Quantized causal structures can be described by studying simple matrix models where matrices are replaced by an algebra of quantum mechanical observables. In particular, previous studies constructed quantum gravity models by quantizing the moduli of Laplace, weight and defining-function operators on Fefferman-Graham ambient spaces. The algebra of these operators underlies conformal geometries. We extend those results to include fermions by taking an osp(1|2) "Dirac square root" of these algebras. The theory is a simple, Grassmann, two-matrix model. Its quantum action is a Chern-Simons theory whose differential is a first-quantized, quantum mechanical BRST operator. The theory is a basic ingredient for building fundamental theories of physical observables.

Covariant constraints for generic massive gravity and analysis of its characteristics

We perform a covariant constraint analysis of massive gravity valid for its entire parameter space, demonstrating that the model generically propagates five degrees of freedom; this is also verified by a new and streamlined Hamiltonian description. The constraint's covariant expression permits computation of the model's caustics. Although new features such as the dynamical Riemann tensor appear in the characteristic matrix, the model still exhibits the pathologies uncovered in earlier work: superluminality and likely acausalities.

Is Quantum Gravity a Chern-Simons Theory?

We propose a model of quantum gravity in arbitrary dimensions defined in terms of the BV quantization of a supersymmetric, infinite dimensional matrix model. This gives an (AKSZ-type) Chern-Simons theory with gauge algebra the space of observables of a quantum mechanical Hilbert space H. The model is motivated by previous attempts to formulate gravity in terms of non-commutative, phase space, field theories as well as the Fefferman-Graham curved analog of Dirac spaces for conformally invariant wave equations. The field equations are flat connection conditions amounting to zero curvature and parallel conditions on operators acting on H. This matrix-type model may give a better defined setting for a quantum gravity path integral. We demonstrate that its underlying physics is a summation over Hamiltonians labeled by a conformal class of metrics and thus a sum over causal structures. This gives in turn a model summing over fluctuating metrics plus a tower of additional modes-we speculate that these could yield improved UV behavior.

Metric projective geometry, BGG detour complexes and partially massless gauge theories

A projective geometry is an equivalence class of torsion free connections sharing the same unparametrised geodesics; this is a basic structure for understanding physical systems. Metric projective geometry is concerned with the interaction of projective and pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We show that the BGG machinery of projective geometry combines with structures known as Yang-Mills detour complexes to produce a general tool for generating invariant pseudo-Riemannian gauge theories. This produces (detour) complexes of differential operators corresponding to gauge invariances and dynamics. We show, as an application, that curved versions of these sequences give geometric characterizations of the obstructions to propagation of higher spins in Einstein spaces. Further, we show that projective BGG detour complexes generate both gauge invariances and gauge invariant constraint systems for partially massless models: the input for this machinery is a projectively invariant gauge operator corresponding to the first operator of a certain BGG sequence. We also connect this technology to the log-radial reduction method and extend the latter to Einstein backgrounds.

Problems of Massive Gravities

The method of characteristics is a key tool for studying consistency of equations of motion; it allows issues such as predictability, maximal propagation speed, superluminality, unitarity and acausality to be addressed without requiring explicit solutions. We review this method and its application to massive gravity theories to show the limitations of these models' physical viability: Among their problems are loss of unique evolution, superluminal signals, matter coupling inconsistencies and micro-acausality (propagation of signals around local closed timelike/causal curves). We extend previous no-go results to the entire three-parameter range of massive gravity theories. It is also argued that bimetric models suffer a similar fate.

Massive Gravity Acausality Redux

Massive gravity (mGR) is a 5(=2s+1) degree of freedom, finite range extension of GR. However, amongst other problems, it is plagued by superluminal propagation, first uncovered via a second order shock analysis. First order mGR shock structures have also been studied, but the existence of superluminal propagation in that context was left open. We present here a concordance of these methods, by an explicit (first order) characteristic matrix computation, which confirms mGR's superluminal propagation as well as acausality.

Non-Einstein source effects in massive gravity

We exhibit novel effects (absent in GR) of sources in massive gravity. First, we show that removing its ghost mode forces a field-current identity: The metric's trace is locally proportional to that of its stress tensor; a point source implies a metric singularity enhanced by the square of the graviton's range. Second, exterior solutions acquire spatial stress hair--their metric components depend on the interior T_ij. Also, in contrast to naive expectations, the Newtonian potential of a source is now determined by both its spatial stress and mass. Our explicit results are obtained at linear, Fierz-Pauli, level, but qualitatively persist nonlinearly.

Nonlinear Partially Massless from Massive Gravity?

We show that consistent nonlinear Partially Massless models cannot be obtained starting from "f-g" massive gravity, with "f" the embedding de Sitter space. The obstruction, which is also the source of f-g acausality, is the very same fifth constraint that removes the notorious sixth ghost excitation. Here, however, it blocks extension of the mass to cosmological background tuned gauge invariance that took away the helicity zero mode at linear level. Separately, our methods allow us to almost complete the class of acausal f-g models.

Partial Masslessness and Conformal Gravity

We use conformal, but ghostful, Weyl gravity to study its ghost-free, second derivative, partially massless (PM) spin 2 component in presence of Einstein gravity with positive cosmological constant. Specifically, we consider both gravitational- and self- interactions of PM via the fully non-linear factorization of conformal gravity's Bach tensor into Einstein times Schouten operators. We find that extending PM beyond linear order suffers from familiar higher-spin consistency obstructions: it propagates only in Einstein backgrounds, and the conformal gravity route generates only the usual safe, Noether, cubic order vertices.

Generalized Einstein Operator Generating Functions

We present gauge invariant, self adjoint Einstein operators for mixed symmetry higher spin theories. The result applies to multi-forms, multi-symmetric forms and mixed antisymmetric and symmetric multi-forms. It also yields explicit action principles for these theories in terms of their minimal covariant field content. For known cases, these actions imply the mixed symmetry equations of motion of Labastida. The result is based on a calculus for handling normal ordered operator expressions built from quantum generators of the underlying constraint algebras.

BRST Detour Quantization

We present the BRST cohomologies of a class of constraint (super) Lie algebras as detour complexes. By giving physical interpretations to the components of detour complexes as gauge invariances, Bianchi identities and equations of motion we obtain a large class of new gauge theories. The pivotal new machinery is a treatment of the ghost Hilbert space designed to manifest the detour structure. Along with general results, we give details for three of these theories which correspond to gauge invariant spinning particle models of totally symmetric, antisymmetric and Kähler antisymmetric forms. In particular, we give details of our recent announcement of a (p,q)-form Kähler electromagnetism. We also discuss how our results generalize to other special geometries.

Cosmological Topologically Massive Gravitons and Photons

We study topologically massive (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant. The masses of the linearized curvature excitations about AdS_3 backgrounds are not only shifted from their flat background values but, more surprisingly, split according to chirality. For all finite values of the topological mass, we find a single bulk degree of freedom with positive energy, and exhibit a complete set of normalizable, finite-energy wave packet solutions. This model can also be written as a sum of two higher-derivative SL(2,R) Chern--Simons theories, weighted by the central charges of the boundary conformal field theory. At two particular "critical" values of the couplings, one of these central charges vanishes, and linearized topologically massive gravity becomes equivalent to topologically massive electromagnetism; however, the physics of the bulk wave packets remains unaltered here.

Conformal Orthosymplectic Quantum Mechanics

We present the most general curvature obstruction to the deformed parabolic orthosymplectic symmetry subalgebra of the supersymmetric quantum mechanical models recently developed to describe Lichnerowicz wave operators acting on arbitrary tensors and spinors. For geometries possessing a hypersurface-orthogonal homothetic conformal Killing vector we show that the parabolic subalgebra is enhanced to a (curvature-obstructed) orthosymplectic algebra. The new symmetries correspond to time-dependent conformal symmetries of the underlying particle model. We also comment on generalizations germane to three dimensions and new Chern--Simons-like particle models.

preprint2008arXiv

Topologically Massive AdS Gravity

We analyze (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a Chern--Simons term and a negative cosmological constant, primarily at the weak field level. The full theory is expressible as the sum of two higher derivative SL(2,R) "vector" Chern-Simons terms, while the physical bulk degrees of freedom correspond to a single massive scalar field, just as for Lambda=0. The interplay of Lambda and the mass parameter mu can be studied, and any physical mass--including the conformal value with null propagation--is accessible by tuning mu. The single bulk mode yields a complete set of normalizable positive energy wave packets, as long as one chooses the usual, "wrong" sign of G necessary to connect smoothly with the known Lambda=0 limit. The chiral Chern--Simons coupling leads to gauge invariant linearized curvatures propagating with chirality-dependent masses. Linearized metric fluctuations have a finite asymptotic Fefferman--Graham expansion about the Poincar'e metric for any mass value greater or equal to a "critical" one, where various amusing effects appear, such as vanishing of one of the two "vector" Chern-Simons terms and an equivalence between tensor and vector excitations. We also find a set of chiral, pp-wave metrics that exactly solve the full nonlinear equations.

Weyl Invariance and the Origins of Mass

By a uniform and simple Weyl invariant coupling of scale and matter fields, we construct theories that unify massless, massive, and partially massless excitations. Masses are related to tractor Weyl weights, and Breitenlohner-Freedman stability bounds in anti de Sitter amount to reality of these weights. The method relies on tractor calculus -- mathematical machinery allowing Weyl invariance to be kept manifest at all stages. The equivalence between tractor and higher spin systems with arbitrary spins and masses is also considered.

$R^4$ couplings, the fundamental membrane and exceptional theta correspondences

This letter is an attempt to carry out a first-principle computation in M-theory using the point of view that the eleven-dimensional membrane gives the fundamental degrees of freedom of M-theory. Our aim is to derive the exact BPS $R^4$ couplings in M-theory compactified on a torus $T^{d+1}$ from the toroidal BPS membrane, by pursuing the analogy with the one-loop string theory computation. We exhibit an $Sl(3,\Zint)$ modular invariance hidden in the light-cone gauge (but obvious in the Polyakov approach), and recover the correct classical spectrum and membrane instantons; the summation measure however is incorrect. It is argued that the correct membrane amplitude should be given by an exceptional theta correspondence lifting $Sl(3,\Zint)$ modular forms to $\exc(\Zint)$ automorphic forms, generalizing the usual theta lift between $Sl(2,\Zint)$ and $SO(d,d,\Zint)$ in string theory. The exceptional correspondence $Sl(3)\times E_{6(6)}\subset E_{8(8)}$ offers the interesting prospect of solving the membrane small volume divergence and unifying membranes with five-branes.

Minimal representations, spherical vectors, and exceptional theta series I

Theta series for exceptional groups have been suggested as a possible description of the eleven-dimensional quantum supermembrane. We present explicit formulae for these automorphic forms whenever the underlying Lie group $G$ is split (or complex) and simply laced. Specifically, we review and construct explicitly the minimal representation of $G$, generalizing the Schrödinger representation of symplectic groups. We compute the spherical vector in this representation, i.e. the wave function invariant under the maximal compact subgroup, which plays the role of the summand in the automorphic theta series. We also determine the spherical vector over the complex field. We outline how the spherical vector over the $p$-adic number fields provides the summation measure in the theta series, postponing its determination to a sequel of this work. The simplicity of our result is suggestive of a new Born-Infeld-like description of the membrane where U-duality is realized non-linearly. Our results may also be used in constructing quantum mechanical systems with spectrum generating symmetries.
