Total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy of the ββ decays of 96gs,m^{96\text{gs,m}}Y

The ββ decays of the ground state (gs) and isomeric state (m) of 96^{96}Y have been studied with the total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy technique at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility. The separation of the 8+^{+} isomeric state from the 0−^{-} ground state was achieved thanks to the purification capabilities of the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap system. The ββ-intensity distributions of both decays have been independently determined. In the analyses the de-excitation of the 1581.6 keV level in 96^{96}Zr, in which conversion electron emission competes with pair production, has been carefully considered and found to have significant impact on the ββ-detector efficiency, influencing the ββ-intensity distribution obtained. Our results for 96gs^{96\text{gs}}Y (0+^+) confirm the large ground state to ground state ββ-intensity probability, although a slightly larger value than reported in previous studies was obtained, amounting to 96.6−2.1+0.3%96.6_{-2.1}^{+0.3}\% of the total ββ intensity. Given that the decay of 96gs^{96\text{gs}}Y is the second most important contributor to the reactor antineutrino spectrum between 5 and 7 MeV, the impact of the present results on reactor antineutrino summation calculations has been evaluated. In the decay of 96m^{96\text{m}}Y (8+^{+}), previously undetected ββ intensity in transitions to states above 6 MeV has been observed. This shows the importance of total absorption γγ-ray spectroscopy measurements of ββ decays with highly fragmented de-excitation patterns. 96m^{96\text{m}}Y (8+^{+}) is a major contributor to reactor decay heat in uranium-plutonium and thorium-uranium fuels around 10 s after fission pulses, and the newly measured average ββ and γγ energies differ significantly from the previous values in evaluated databases (...)

Determination of Beta Decay Ground State Feeding of Nuclei of Importance for Reactor Applications

In ββ-decay studies the determination of the decay probability to the ground state of the daughter nucleus often suffers from large systematic errors. The difficulty of the measurement is related to the absence of associated delayed γγ-ray emission. In this work we revisit the 4πγ−β4πγ-β method proposed by Greenwood and collaborators in the 1990s, which has the potential to overcome some of the experimental difficulties. Our interest is driven by the need to determine accurately the ββ-intensity distributions of fission products that contribute significantly to the reactor decay heat and to the antineutrinos emitted by reactors. A number of such decays have large ground state branches. The method is relevant for nuclear structure studies as well. Pertinent formulae are revised and extended to the special case of ββ-delayed neutron emitters, and the robustness of the method is demonstrated with synthetic data. We apply it to a number of measured decays that serve as test cases and discuss the features of the method. Finally, we obtain ground state feeding intensities with reduced uncertainty for four relevant decays that will allow future improvements in antineutrino spectrum and decay heat calculations using the summation method.

Mass of astrophysically relevant 31^{31}Cl and the breakdown of the isobaric multiplet mass equation

The mass of 31^{31}Cl has been measured with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Ion-Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. The determined mass-excess value, -7034.7(34) keV, is 15 times more precise than in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. The quadratic form of the isobaric multiplet mass equation for the T=3/2 quartet at A=31 fails (χn2χ^2_n=11.6) and a non-zero cubic term, d=-3.5(11) keV, is obtained when the new mass value is adopted. 31^{31}Cl has been found to be less proton-bound with a proton separation energy of SpS_p=265(4) keV. Energies for the excited states in 31^{31}Cl and the photodisintegration rate on 31^{31}Cl have been determined with significantly improved precision using the new SpS_p value. The improved photodisintegration rate helps to constrain astrophysical conditions where 30^{30}S can act as a waiting point in the rapid proton capture process in type I x-ray bursts.

Broadband Electrically Detected Magnetic Resonance Using Adiabatic Pulses

We present a broadband microwave setup for electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) based on microwave antennae with the ability to apply arbitrarily shaped pulses for the excitation of electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of spin ensembles. This setup uses non-resonant stripline structures for on-chip microwave delivery and is demonstrated to work in the frequency range from 4 MHz to 18 GHz. ππ pulse times of 50 ns and 70 μμs for ESR and NMR transitions, respectively, are achieved with as little as 100 mW of microwave or radiofrequency power. The use of adiabatic pulses fully compensates for the microwave magnetic field inhomogeneity of the stripline antennae, as demonstrated with the help of BIR4 unitary rotation pulses driving the ESR transition of neutral phosphorus donors in silicon and the NMR transitions of ionized phosphorus donors as detected by electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR).

First experimental determination of the charge radius of 74^{74}Rb and its application in tests of the unitarity of the CKM matrix

Collinear-laser spectroscopy with bunched-beams technique was used for the study of neutron deficient Rb isotopes, out to 74^{74}Rb (N=Z=37N=Z=37) at TRIUMF. The measured hyperfine coupling constants of 76,78m^{76,78m}Rb were in agreement with literature values. The nuclear spin of 75^{75}Rb was confirmed to be I=3/2I=3/2, and its hyperfine coupling constants were measured for the first time. The mean-square charge radius of 74^{74}Rb was determined for the first time. This result has improved the isospin symmetry breaking correction term used to calculate the Ft\mathcal{F}t value, with implications for tests of the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.
