FLAG Review 2019

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to π$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $f_K/f_π$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ and $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for $D$- and $B$-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Finally, in this review we have added a new section reviewing results for nucleon matrix elements of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal.

Review of lattice results concerning low-energy particle physics

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D- and B-meson physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f+(0), arising in the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio fK/fpi and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements Vus and Vud. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)LxSU(2)R and SU(3)LxSU(3)R Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the BK parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four B parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. The latter quantities are an addition compared to the previous review. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for mc and mb (also new compared to the previous review), as well as those for D- and B-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. Finally, we review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

Prospects and status of quark mass renormalization in three-flavour QCD

We present the current status of a revised strategy to compute the running of renormalized quark masses in QCD with three flavours of massless O(a) improved Wilson quarks. The strategy employed uses the standard finite-size scaling method in the Schrödinger functional and accommodates for the non-perturbative scheme-switch which becomes necessary at intermediate renormalized couplings as discussed in [arXiv:1411.7648].

Renormalization of HQET $ΔB=2$ operators: O($a$) improvement and $1/m$ matching with QCD

We determine a basis of dimension-7 operators which arise at O($a$) in the Symanzik expansion of the $ΔB=2$ operators with static heavy quarks. We consider both Wilson-like and Ginsparg-Wilson light quarks. Exact chiral symmetry reduces the number of these O($a$) counterterms by a factor of two. Only a subset of these operators has previously appeared in the literature. We then extend the analysis to the O($1/m$) operators contributing beyond the static approximation.

BK-parameter from Nf = 2 twisted mass lattice QCD

We present an unquenched $N_f=2$ lattice computation of the $B_{K}$ parameter which controls $K^0-\bar K^0$ oscillations. A partially quenched setup is employed with two maximally twisted dynamical (sea) light Wilson quarks, and valence quarks of both the maximally twisted and the Osterwalder--Seiler variety. Suitable combinations of these two kinds of valence quarks lead to a lattice definition of the $B_{K}$ parameter which is both multiplicatively renormalizable and O($a$) improved. Employing the non-perturbative RI-MOM scheme, in the continuum limit and at the physical value of the pion mass we get $B^{\rm RGI}_K=0.729\pm 0.030$, a number well in line with the existing quenched and unquenched determinations.

K* vector and tensor couplings from Nf = 2 tmQCD

The mass m_K* and vector coupling f_K* of the K*-meson, as well as the ratio of the tensor to vector couplings fT/fV|_K*, are computed in lattice QCD. Our simulations are performed in a partially quenched setup, with two dynamical (sea) Wilson quark flavours, having a maximally twisted mass term. Valence quarks are either of the standard or the Osterwalder-Seiler maximally twisted variety. Results obtained at three values of the lattice spacing are extrapolated to the continuum, giving m_K* = 981(33) MeV, f_K* = 240(18) MeV and fT(2 GeV)/fV|_K* = 0.704(41).

Three Topics in Renormalization and Improvement

This is an expanded version of lecture notes, delivered at the XCIII Les Houches Summer School (August 2009). Our aim is to present three very specific topics: (i) The consequences of the loss of chiral symmetry in the Wilson lattice regularization of the fermionic action and its recovery in the continuum limit. The treatment of these arguments involves lattice Ward identities. (ii) The definition and properties of mass independent renormalization schemes, which are suitable for a non-perturbative computation of various operator renormalization constants. (iii) The modification of the Wilson fermion action, by the introduction of a chirally twisted mass term (known as twisted mass QCD - tmQCD), which results to improved (re)normalization and scaling properties for physical quantities of interest.

K^0-\bar{K}^0 Mixing Beyond the SM from Nf=2 tmQCD

We present preliminary results on the of neutral kaon oscillations in extensions of the Standard Model. Using Nf=2 maximally twisted sea quarks and Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks, we achieve both O(a)-improvement and continuum-like renormalization pattern for the relevant four-fermion operators. We perform simulations at three values of the lattice spacing and extrapolate/interpolate our results to the continuum limit and physical light/strange quark mass. The calculation of the renormalization constants of the complete operator basis is performed non- perturbatively in the RI-MOM scheme.

Non-perturbative renormalization of quark bilinear operators with Nf=2 (tmQCD) Wilson fermions and the tree-level improved gauge action

We present results for the renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators obtained by using the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action and the Nf=2 twisted mass fermion action at maximal twist, which guarantees automatic O(a)-improvement. Our results are also relevant for the corresponding standard (un-twisted) Wilson fermionic action since the two actions only differ, in the massless limit, by a chiral rotation of the quark fields. The scale-independent renormalization constants ZV, ZA and the ratio ZP/ZS have been computed using the RI-MOM approach, as well as other alternative methods. For ZA and ZP/ZS, the latter are based on both standard twisted mass and Osterwalder-Seiler fermions, while for ZV a Ward Identity has been used. The quark field renormalization constant Zq and the scale dependent renormalization constants ZS, ZP and ZT are determined in the RI-MOM scheme. Leading discretization effects of O(g^2 a^2), evaluated in one-loop perturbation theory, are explicitly subtracted from the RI-MOM estimates.

Kaon oscillations in the Standard Model and Beyond using Nf=2 dynamical quarks

We compute non-perturbatively the B-parameters of the complete basis of four-fermion operators needed to study the Kaon oscillations in the SM and in its supersymmetric extension. We perform numerical simulations with two dynamical maximally twisted sea quarks at three values of the lattice spacing on configurations generated by the ETMC. Unwanted operator mixings and O(a) discretization effects are removed by discretizing the valence quarks with a suitable Osterwalder-Seiler variant of the Twisted Mass action. Operators are renormalized non-perturbatively in the RI/MOM scheme. Our preliminary result for BK(RGI) is 0.73(3)(3).

Quenched $B_K$-parameter from Osterwalder-Seiler tmQCD quarks and mass-splitting discretization effects

We apply an Osterwalder-Seiler version of twisted mass QCD to a study of the $B_K$ parameter, in which three of the four quark fields making up the relevant $ΔS =2$ operator are maximally twisted with the same twist angle, while the fourth one has a twist angle of opposite sign. It is known that this setup ensures automatic improvement of the bare $K^0$-$\overline K^0$ operator matrix element and multiplicative renormalization of the $ΔS =2$ operator, at the price of breaking the $K^0$-$\overline K^0$ mass degeneracy by discretization effects. As a result, two dominant systematic errors of the $B_ K$ determination with Wilson fermions are kept under control. With the Clover term included in the fermion action, we perform a feasibility study and find, in the quenched approximation, a significant improvement of the scaling behaviour of $B_K$, compared to earlier standard tmQCD determinations. Moreover, we study in detail the $K^0$-$\overline K^0$ mass splitting that characterizes this approach and confirm that, in the presence of the Clover term, it is greatly reduced in a maximally twisted theory.

Non-perturbative renormalization of left-left four-fermion operators in quenched lattice QCD

We define a family of Schroedinger Functional renormalization schemes for the four-quark multiplicatively renormalizable operators of the $ΔF = 1$ and $ΔF = 2$ effective weak Hamiltonians. Using the lattice regularization with quenched Wilson quarks, we compute non-perturbatively the renormalization group running of these operators in the continuum limit in a large range of renormalization scales. Continuum limit extrapolations are well controlled thanks to the implementation of two fermionic actions (Wilson and Clover). The ratio of the renormalization group invariant operator to its renormalized counterpart at a low energy scale, as well as the renormalization constant at this scale, is obtained for all schemes.

K0-K0bar mixing from the Schroedinger functional and twisted mass QCD

We describe how the Schroedinger functional and twisted mass QCD can be used to compute the kaon B-parameter B_K on the lattice with Wilson fermions. This new approach is expected to reduce the systematic uncertainties on B_K through a better control of its (nonperturbative) renormalisation. Preliminary results for the bare matrix element in a physical volume of (1.5^3 x 4.5) fm^4 are presented. The renormalisation of the matrix element in a Schroedinger functional scheme is also discussed.

SUSY Ward identities in N=1 SYM theory on the lattice

The SUSY Ward identities (WIs) for the N=1 SU(2) SUSY Yang Mills theory discretized on the lattice with Wilson fermions (gluinos) are considered. The study is performed in the framework of a Monte Carlo simulation of the model with light dynamical gluinos. The renormalization and mixing constants of the lattice SUSY current $Z_S$ and $Z_T$ and the additively renormalized gluino mass $m_S$ are unknown parameters of the SUSY WIs. Using suitable on-shell combinations of the WIs, the ratios $Z_T/Z_S$ and $m_S/Z_S$ are determined non-perturbatively at one value of the coupling constant $g_0$ and two values of the hopping parameter $κ$.

Non-Perturbative Renormalization of Lattice Four-Fermion Operators without Power Subtractions

A general non-perturbative analysis of the renormalization properties of $ΔI=3/2$ four-fermion operators in the framework of lattice regularization with Wilson fermions is presented. We discuss the non-perturbative determination of the operator renormalization constants in the lattice Regularization Independent (RI or MOM) scheme. We also discuss the determination of the finite lattice subtraction coefficients from Ward Identities. We prove that, at large external virtualities, the determination of the lattice mixing coefficients, obtained using the RI renormalization scheme, is equivalent to that based on Ward Identities, in the continuum and chiral limits. As a feasibility study of our method, we compute the mixing matrix at several renormalization scales, for three values of the lattice coupling $β$, using the Wilson and tree-level improved SW-Clover actions.

Improved Renormalization of Lattice Operators: A Critical Reappraisal

We systematically examine various proposals which aim at increasing the accuracy in the determination of the renormalization of two-fermion lattice operators. We concentrate on three finite quantities which are particularly suitable for our study: the renormalization constants of the vector and axial currents and the ratio of the renormalization constants of the scalar and pseudoscalar densities. We calculate these quantities in boosted perturbation theory, with several running boosted couplings, at the "optimal" scale q*. We find that the results of boosted perturbation theory are usually (but not always) in better agreement with non-perturbative determinations of the renormalization constants than those obtained with standard perturbation theory. The finite renormalization constants of two-fermion lattice operators are also obtained non-perturbatively, using Ward Identities, both with the Wilson and the tree-level Clover improved actions, at fixed cutoff ($β$=6.4 and 6.0 respectively). In order to amplify finite cutoff effects, the quark masses (in lattice units) are varied in a large interval 0<am<1. We find that discretization effects are always large with the Wilson action, despite our relatively small value of the lattice spacing ($a^{-1} \simeq 3.7$ GeV). With the Clover action discretization errors are significantly reduced at small quark mass, even though our lattice spacing is larger ($a^{-1} \simeq 2$ GeV). However, these errors remain substantial in the heavy quark region. We have implemented a proposal for reducing O(am) effects, which consists in matching the lattice quantities to their continuum counterparts in the free theory. We find that this approach still leaves appreciable, mass dependent, discretization effects.

Lattice B-parameters for $ΔS = 2$ and $ΔI = 3/2$ Operators

We compute several matrix elements of dimension-six four-fermion operators and extract their B-parameters. The calculations have been performed with the tree-level Clover action at $β= 6.0$. The renormalization constants and mixing coefficients of the lattice operators have been obtained non-perturbatively. In the $\MSbar$ renormalization scheme, at a renormalization scale $μ\simeq 2$ GeV, we find $B_K (B_9^{3/2}) = 0.66(11), B_7^{3/2} = 0.72(5)$ and $B_8^{3/2} = 1.03(3)$. The result for $B_8^{3/2}$ has important implications for the calculation of $ε^\prime / ε$.

DEPENDENCE OF THE CURRENT RENORMALISATION CONSTANTS ON THE QUARK MASS

We study the behaviour of the vector and axial current renormalisation constants $Z_V$ and $Z_A$ as a function of the quark mass, $m_q$. We show that sizeable $O(am_q)$ and $O(g_0^2 a m_q)$ systematic effects are present in the Wilson and Clover cases respectively. We find that the prescription of Kronfeld, Lepage and Mackenzie for correcting these artefacts is not always successful.
