Channeling of ultrarelativistic particles in a diamond crystal

The results of numerical simulation of the channeling of ultra-relativistic 270 MeV electrons and positrons in a diamond crystal are presented. Using the MBN Explorer package, the trajectories of the have been determined of the particles incident on a 20 microns thick crystal along (110) crystallographic plane. The channeling parameters and radiation spectra of electrons and positrons have been computed for the cases of straight and periodically bent diamond crystals.

Hybridization-related correction to the jellium model for fullerenes

We introduce a new type of correction for a more accurate description of fullerenes within the spherically symmetric jellium model. This correction represents a pseudopotential which originates from the comparison between an accurate ab initio calculation and the jellium model calculation. It is shown that such a correction to the jellium model allows one to account, at least partly, for the sp2-hybridization of carbon atomic orbitals. Therefore, it may be considered as a more physically meaningful correction as compared with a structureless square-well pseudopotential which has been widely used earlier.

Demodulation of a positron beam in a bent crystal channel

The evolution of a modulated positron beam in a planar crystal channel is investigated within the diffusion approach. A detailed description of the formalism is given. A new parameter, the demodulation length, is introduced, representing the quantitative measure of the depth at which the channelling beam preserves its modulation in the crystal. It is demonstrated that there exist crystal channels with the demodulation length sufficiently large for using the crystalline undulator as a coherent source of hard X rays. This finding is a crucial milestone in developing a new type of lasers radiating in the hard X ray and gamma ray range.

Multiscale approach to radiation damage induced by ion beams: complex DNA damage and effects of thermal spikes

We present the latest advances of the multiscale approach to radiation damage caused by irradiation of a tissue with energetic ions and report the most recent advances in the calculations of complex DNA damage and the effects of thermal spikes on biomolecules. The multiscale approach aims to quantify the most important physical, chemical, and biological phenomena taking place during and following irradiation with ions and provide a better means for clinically-necessary calculations with adequate accuracy. We suggest a way of quantifying the complex clustered damage, one of the most important features of the radiation damage caused by ions. This method can be used for the calculation of irreparable DNA damage. We include thermal spikes, predicted to occur in tissue for a short time after ion's passage in the vicinity of the ions' tracks in our previous work, into modeling of the thermal environment for molecular dynamics analysis of ubiquitin and discuss the first results of these simulations.

Stable propagation of a modulated positron beam in a bent crystal channel

The propagation of a modulated positron beam in a planar crystal channel is investigated. It is demonstrated that the beam preserves its modulation at sufficiently large penetration depths which opens the prospect of using a crystalline undulator as a coherent source of hard x-rays. This finding is a crucial milestone in developing a new type of lasers radiating in the hard x-ray and gamma-ray range.

Statistical Mechanics Model for Protein Folding

We present a novel statistical mechanics formalism for the theoretical description of the process of protein folding$\leftrightarrow$unfolding transition in water environment. The formalism is based on the construction of the partition function of a protein obeying two-stage-like folding kinetics. Using the statistical mechanics model of solvation of hydrophobic hydrocarbons we obtain the partition function of infinitely diluted solution of proteins in water environment. The calculated dependencies of the protein heat capacities upon temperature are compared with the corresponding results of experimental measurements for staphylococcal nuclease and metmyoglobin.

Confinement resonances in photoionization of endohedral atoms: a myth or reality?

We demonstrate that the structure of confinement resonances in the photoionization cross section of an endohedral atom is very sensitive to the mean displacement <a> of the atom from the cage center. The resonances are strongly suppressed if 2<a> exceeds the photoelectron half-wavelength. We explain the results of recent experiments which contradict the earlier theoretical predictions on the existence of confinement resonances in particular endohedral systems.

Finslerian 3-spinors and the generalized Duffin-Kemmer equation

The main facts of the geometry of Finslerian 3-spinors are formulated. The close connection between Finslerian 3-spinors and vectors of the 9-dimensional linear Finslerian space is established. The isometry group of this space is described. The procedure of dimensional reduction to 4-dimensional quantities is formulated. The generalized Duffin-Kemmer equation for a Finslerian 3-spinor wave function of a free particle in the momentum representation is obtained. From the viewpoint of a 4-dimensional observer, this 9-dimensional equation splits into the standard Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations.

Photon emission by ultra-relativistic positrons in crystalline undulators: the high-energy regime

This paper discusses the undulator radiation emitted by high-energy positrons during planar channeling in periodically bent crystals. We demonstrate that the construction of the undulator for positrons with energies of 10 GeV and above is only possible if one takes into account the radiative energy losses. The frequency of the undulator radiation depends on the energy of the particle. Thus the decrease of the particle's energy during the passage of the crystal should result in the destruction of the undulator radiation regime. However, we demonstrate that it is possible to avoid the destructive influence of the radiative losses on the frequency of the undulator radiation by the appropriate variation of the shape of the crystal channels. We also discuss a method by which, to our mind, it would be possible to prepare the crystal with the desired properties of its channels.
