Fission properties of $^{253}$Rf and the stability of neutron-deficient Rf isotopes

An analysis of recent experimental data [J. Khuyagbaatar et al., Phys. Rev. C 104, L031303 (2021)] has established the existence of two fissioning states in $^{253}$Rf: the ground state and a low-lying isomeric state, most likely involving the same neutron single-particle configurations as in the lighter isotone $^{251}$No. The ratio of fission half-lives measured in $^{253}$Rf was used to predict the fission properties of the 1/2$^{+}$ isomeric state in $^{251}$No and draw conclusions as to the stability against fission of even lighter Rf systems. This paper focusses again on the fission properties of $^{253}$Rf and their impact on the stability of other neutron deficient isotopes, using new and improved data collected from two experiments performed at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions in Dubna, Russia. Two fission activities with half-lives of 52.8(4.4)$~μ$s and 9.9(1.2) ms were measured in the case of $^{253}$Rf, confirming the results of J. Kkuyagbaatar et al. A third state, at much higher excitation energy, was also observed through the detection of its electromagnetic decay to the 52.8$~μ$s state. This observation leads to the opposite quantum-configuration assignments for the fissioning states as compared to the ones established by J. Khuyagbaatar et al., namely that the higher-spin state has the shortest fission half-life. This inversion of the ratio of fission hindrances between the low and high-spin states is corroborated in the isotone $^{251}$No by the non observation of any substantial fission branch from the low-spin isomer.

Study of the production and decay properties of neutron-deficient nobelium isotopes

The new neutron-deficient isotope $^{249}$No was synthesized for the first time in the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{204}$Pb($^{48}$Ca,3n)$^{249}$No. After separation, using the kinematic separator SHELS, the new isotope was identified with the GABRIELA detection system through genetic correlations with the known daughter and granddaughter nuclei $^{245}$Fm and $^{241}$Cf. The alpha-decay activity of $^{249}$No has an energy of 9129(22)$~$keV and half-life 38.3(2.8) ms. An upper limit of 0.2\% was measured for the fission branch of $^{249}$No. Based on the present data and recent information on the decay properties of $^{253}$Rf and aided by Geant4 simulations, the ground state of $^{249}$No is assigned the 5/2$^+$[622] neutron configuration and a partial decay scheme from $^{253}$Rf to $^{245}$Fm could be established. The production cross-section was found to be $σ$(3n)=0.47(4) nb at a mid-target beam energy of 225.4 MeV, which corresponds to the maximum of the calculated excitation function. Correlations of the $^{249}$No alpha activity with subsequent alpha decays of energy 7728(20) keV and half-life $1.2_{-0.4}^{+1.0}$ min provided a firm measurement of the electron-capture or $β^{+}$ branch of $^{245}$Fm to $^{245}$Es. The excitation function for the 1n, 2n and 3n evaporation channels was measured. In the case of the 2n-evaporation channel $^{250}$No, a strong variation of the ground state and isomeric state populations as a function of bombarding energy could be evidenced.

Alpha-decay spectroscopy of $^{257}$Rf

The decay properties of the ground state and excited states of $^{257}$Rf have been investigated with the detector array GABRIELA at the FLNR, Dubna. The electromagnetic decay of a new excited state in $^{253}$No has been observed. The state lies 750 keV above the ground state and is favourably populated in the alpha decay of the low-lying spin isomer of $^{257}$Rf. It decays to the 9/2$^-$ ground state by an M1 transition and is assigned the 11/2$^-$[725] Nilsson configuration. The presence of this state suggests a possible reinterpretation of the decay of the high-K isomer in $^{253}$No.

A Criterion for Isomorphism of Artinian Gorenstein Algebras

Let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein algebra over an infinite field $k$ with either $\hbox{char}(k)=0$ or $\hbox{char}(k)>ν$, where $ν$ is the socle degree of $A$. To every such algebra and a linear projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the socle $\hbox {Soc}(A)$ of $A$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$, which is the graph of a polynomial map $P_π:\hbox{ker}\,π\to \hbox{Soc}(A)\simeq k$. Recently, the author and his collaborators have obtained the following surprising criterion: two Artinian Gorenstein algebras $A$, $\tilde A$ are isomorphic if and only if any two hypersurfaces $S_π$ and $S_{\tildeπ}$ arising from $A$ and $\tilde A$, respectively, are affinely equivalent. The proof is indirect and relies on a geometric argument. In the present paper we give a short algebraic proof of this statement. We also discuss a connection, established elsewhere, between the polynomials $P_π$ and Macaulay inverse systems.

Associated forms of binary quartics and ternary cubics

Let ${\mathcal Q}_n^d$ be the vector space of forms of degree $d\ge 3$ on ${\mathbb C}^n$, with $n\ge 2$. The object of our study is the map $Φ$, introduced in papers [EI], [AI1], that assigns every nondegenerate form in ${\mathcal Q}_n^d$ the so-called associated form, which is an element of ${\mathcal Q}_n^{n(d-2)*}$. We focus on two cases: those of binary quartics ($n=2$, $d=4$) and ternary cubics ($n=3$, $d=3$). In these situations the map $Φ$ induces a rational equivariant involution on the projectivized space ${\mathbb P}({\mathcal Q}_n^d)$, which is in fact the only nontrivial rational equivariant involution on ${\mathbb P}({\mathcal Q}_n^d)$. In particular, there exists an equivariant involution on the space of elliptic curves with nonvanishing $j$-invariant. In the present paper, we give a simple interpretation of this involution in terms of projective duality. Furthermore, we express it via classical contravariants.

Invariants of Artinian Gorenstein Algebras and Isolated Hypersurface Singularities

We survey our recently proposed method for constructing biholomorphic invariants of quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities and, more generally, invariants of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras. The method utilizes certain polynomials associated to such algebras, called nil-polynomials, and we compare them with two other classes of polynomials that have also been used to produce invariants.

Explicit reconstruction of homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities from their Milnor algebras

By the Mather-Yau theorem, a complex hypersurface germ $V$ with isolated singularity is completely determined by its moduli algebra $A(V)$. The proof of the theorem does not provide an explicit procedure for recovering $V$ from $A(V)$, and finding such a procedure is a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we present an explicit way for reconstructing $V$ from $A(V)$ up to biholomorphic equivalence under the assumption that the singularity of $V$ is homogeneous, in which case $A(V)$ coincides with the Milnor algebra of $V$.

Extracting Invariants of Isolated Hypersurface Singularities from their Moduli Algebras

We use classical invariant theory to construct invariants of complex graded Gorenstein algebras of finite vector space dimension. As a consequence, we obtain a way of extracting certain numerical invariants of quasi-homogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities from their moduli algebras, which extends an earlier result due to the first author. Furthermore, we conjecture that the invariants so constructed solve the biholomorphic equivalence problem in the homogeneous case. The conjecture is easily verified for binary quartics and ternary cubics. We show that it also holds for binary quintics and sextics. In the latter cases the proofs are much more involved. In particular, we provide a complete list of canonical forms of binary sextics, which is a result of independent interest.

On a new criterion for isomorphism of Artinian Gorenstein algebras

To every Gorenstein algebra $A$ of finite vector space dimension greater than 1 over a field $\FF$ of characteristic zero, and a linear projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the annihilator $\Ann({\mathfrak m})$ of ${\mathfrak m}$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$, which is the graph of a polynomial map $P_π:\kerπ\ra\Ann({\mathfrak m})\simeq\FF$. Recently, in {\rm\cite{FIKK}}, {\rm\cite{FK}} the following surprising criterion was obtained: two Gorenstein algebras $A$, $\tilde A$ are isomorphic if and only if any two hypersurfaces $S_π$ and $S_{\tildeπ}$ arising from $A$ and $\tilde A$, respectively, are affinely equivalent. The proof is indirect and relies on a CR-geometric argument. In the present paper we give a short algebraic proof of this statement. We also compare the polynomials $P_π$ with Macaulay's inverse systems. Namely, we show that the restrictions of $P_π$ to certain subspaces of $\kerπ$ are inverse systems for $A$.

On the Number of Affine Equivalence Classes of Spherical Tube Hypersurfaces

We consider Levi non-degenerate tube hypersurfaces in $\CC^{n+1}$ that are $(k,n-k)$-spherical, i.e. locally CR-equivalent to the hyperquadric with Levi form of signature $(k,n-k)$, with $n\le 2k$. We show that the number of affine equivalence classes of such hypersurfaces is infinite (in fact, uncountable) in the following cases: (i) $k=n-2$, $n\ge 7$;\linebreak (ii) $k=n-3$, $n\ge 7$; (iii) $k\le n-4$. For all other values of $k$ and $n$, except for $k=3$, $n=6$, the number of affine classes is known to be finite. The exceptional case $k=3$, $n=6$ has been recently resolved by Fels and Kaup who gave an example of a family of $(3,3)$-spherical tube hypersurfaces that contains uncountably many pairwise affinely non-equivalent elements. In this paper we deal with the Fels-Kaup example by different methods. We give a direct proof of the sphericity of the hypersurfaces in the Fels-Kaup family, and use the $j$-invariant to show that this family indeed contains an uncountable subfamily of pairwise affinely non-equivalent hypersurfaces.

Proper actions of Lie groups of dimension $n^2+1$ on $n$-dimensional complex manifolds

In this paper we continue to study actions of high-dimensional Lie groups on complex manifolds. We give a complete explicit description of all pairs $(M,G)$, where $M$ is a connected complex manifold $M$ of dimension $n\ge 2$, and $G$ is a connected Lie group of dimension $n^2+1$ acting effectively and properly on $M$ by holomorphic transformations. This result complements a classification obtained earlier by the first author for $n^2+2\le\hbox{dim} G<n^2+2n$ and a classical result due to W. Kaup for the maximal group dimension $n^2+2n$.

Domains with Non-Compact Automorphism Group: A Survey

We survey results arising from the study of domains in C^n with non-compact automorphism group. Beginning with a well-known characterization of the unit ball, we develop ideas toward a consideration of weakly pseudoconvex (and even non-pseudoconvex) domains with particular emphasis on characterizations of (i) smoothly bounded domains with non-compact automorphism group and (ii) the Levi geometry of boundary orbit accumulation points. Particular attention will be paid to results derived in the past ten years.
