Upgrade of IAEA recommended data of selected nuclear reactions for production of PET and SPECT isotopes

An IAEA research project was dedicated to the compilation, evaluation and recommendation of cross-section data for the accelerator production of $^{11}$C, $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O, $^{18}$F, $^{64}$Cu, and $^{124}$I positron-emitting radionuclides clinically used for PET imaging, and for the accelerator production of two gamma emitters, $^{81}$Rb and $^{123}$I, used in SPECT imaging. Cross sections for 19 charged-particle induced reactions that can be employed for radionuclide accelerator production were evaluated including uncertainties. The resulting reference cross-section data were obtained from Padé fits to selected and corrected experimental data, and integral thick target yields were subsequently deduced. Uncertainties in the fitted results were estimated via a Padé least-squares method with the addition of a 4\% assessed systematic uncertainty to the estimated experimental uncertainty. Experimental data were also compared with theoretical predictions available from the TENDL library. All of the numerical reference cross-section data with their corresponding uncertainties and deduced integral thick target yields are available on-line at the IAEA-NDS medical portal https://www-nds.iaea.org/medportal/ and also at the IAEA-NDS web page https://www-nds.iaea.org/medical/.

Activation cross-sections of proton induced reactions on $^{nat}$Sm up to 65 MeV

Activation cross sections for proton induced reactions on Sm are presented for the first time for $^{nat}$Sm(p,xn)$^{154,152m2,152m1,152g,150m,150g,149,148,147,146,145}$Eu, $^{nat}$Sm(p,x)$^{153,145}$Sm, $^{nat}$Sm(p,x)$^{151,150,149,148g,148m,146,144,143}$Pm and $^{nat}$Sm(p,x)$^{141}$Nd up to 65 MeV. The cross sections were measured via activation method by using a stacked-foil irradiation technique and high resolution gamma ray spectroscopy. The results were compared with results of the nuclear reaction codes ALICE, EMPIRE and TALYS (results taken from TENDL libraries). Integral yields of the activation products were calculated from the excitation functions.

Excitation functions for(d,x)reactions on $^{133}$Cs up to $E_d = 40$ MeV

In the frame of a systematic study of excitation functions of deuteron induced reactions the excitation functions of the $^{133}$Cs(d,x)$^{133m,133mg,131mg}$Ba, ${134,132}$Cs and $^{129m}$Xe nuclear reactions were measured up to 40 MeV deuteron energies by using the stacked foil irradiation technique and $γ$-ray spectroscopy of activated samples. The results were compared with calculations performed with the theoretical nuclear reaction codes ALICE-IPPE-D, EMPIRE II-D and TALYS calculation listed in the TENDL-2014 library. A moderate agreement was obtained. Based on the integral yields deduced from our measured cross sections, production of $^{131}$Cs via the $^{133}$Cs(d,4n)$^{131}$Ba $\longrightarrow$ $^{131}$Cs reaction and $^{133}$Ba via $^{133}$Cs(d,2n) reactions is discussed in comparison with other charged particle production routes.

Extension of the energy range of experimental activation cross-sections data of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on indium up to 50 MeV

The energy range of our earlier measured activation cross-sections data of longer-lived products of deuteron induced nuclear reactions on indium were extended from 40 MeV up to 50 MeV. The traditional stacked foil irradiation technique and non-destructive gamma spectrometry were used. No experimental data were found in literature for this higher energy range. Experimental cross-sections for the formation of the radionuclides $^{113,110}$Sn, $^{116m,115m,114m,113m,111,110g,109}$In and $^{115}$Cd are reported in the 37-50 MeV energy range, for production of $^{110}$Sn and $^{110g,109}$In these are the first measurements ever. The experimental data were compared with the results of cross section calculations of the ALICE and EMPIRE nuclear model codes and of the TALYS1.6 nuclear model code as listed in the on-line library TENDL-2014.

New cross section data and review of production routes of medically used $^{110m}$In

Evaluation of nuclear data for production routes of $^{110m}$In is in progress in the frame of an IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP). New experimental cross section data for the indirect $^{nat}$In(p,x)$^{110}$Sn $\longrightarrow$ $^{110m}$In and for the direct $^{107}$Ag($α$,n)$^{110m}$In and $^{109}$Ag($^{3}$He,2n)$^{110m}$In production routes and for the satellite impurity reactions $^{107}$Ag($α$,xn)$^{110g,109}$In and $^{109}$Ag($^{3}$He,xn)$^{110g,111,109}$In have been measured by using the activation method, stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma-ray spectrometry. Additional data are reported for production of the $^{111}$In diagnostic gamma-emitter via the $^{109}$Ag($α$,2n)$^{111}$In reaction. The earlier experimental data were critically reviewed in order to prepare recommended data and optimal production parameters for the different routes.

Excitation functions of the nat-Ta(p,x)178m2Hf and nat-W(p,x)178m2Hf reactions at energies up to 2600 MeV

Due to potential level of energy intensity 178m2Hf is an extremely interesting isomer. One possible way to produce this isomer is irradiation of nat-Ta or nat-W samples with high energy protons. Irradiation of nat-Ta and nat-W samples performed for other purposes provides an opportunity to study the corresponding reactions. This paper pre-sents the 178m2Hf independent production cross sections for both targets measured by the gamma-ray spectrometry method. The reaction excitation functions have been obtained for the proton energies from 40 up to 2600 MeV. The experimental results were compared with calculations by various versions of the intranuclear cascade model in the well-known codes: ISABEL, Bertini, INCL4.5+ABLA07, PHITS, CASCADE07 and CEM03.02. The isomer ratio for the nat-Ta(p,x)178m2Hf reaction is evaluated on the basis of the available data.

Stacked foil irradiation technique and $γ$-ray spectrometry were used. New experimental cross section data for the $^{nat}$Ta(d,xn)$^{178}$W reaction are also reported up to 40 MeV. The measured excitation functions are compared with the results of the ALICE-IPPE, and EMPIRE nuclear reaction model codes and with the TALYS 1.4 based data in the TENDL-2013 library. The thick target yields were deduced and compared with yields of other charged particle ((p,4n), (d,5n) and ($^3$He,x)) production routes for $^{178}$W.

The measured cross sections and the contributing reactions were analyzed by comparison with results of the ALICE, EMPIRE and TALYS nuclear reaction codes. A short overview and comparison of possible production routes is given.

Cross-section measurement of some deuteron induced reactions on $^{160}$Gd for possible production of the therapeutic radionuclide $^{161}$Tb

The radionuclide 161Tb (T1/2=6.89 d) is potentially important for internal radiotherapy. It is generally produced through the 160Gd(n,γ)161Gd - 161Tb route at research reactors. In this work the possibility of its production at a cyclotron was investigated. Determination of the excitation function of the 160Gd(d,x)161Tb production route and that of the disturbing 160Gd(d,2n)160Tb side reaction was done over the deuteron energy range up to 50 MeV using the stacked-foil technique and high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. A comparison of this production route with the established (n,γ) reaction at a nuclear reactor is made.

preprint2013arXiv

Excitation Function of the nat-Ta(p,x)178m2-Hf Reaction

178m2-Hf is an extremely interesting isomeric state due to its potential energy capacity level. One possible way to obtain it is by irradiation of a nat-Ta sample with a high-current proton accelerator. Up to now, there was no information in the international experimental nuclear data base (EXFOR) for this reaction. Irradiations of nat-Ta samples performed for other purposes provide an opportunity to address this question. This paper presents the 172m2-Hf independent production cross-sections determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The nat-Ta(p,x)172m2-Hf excitation function is studied in the 20-3500 MeV energy range. Comparisons with results by several nuclear models (ISABEL, Bertini, INCL4.5+ABLA07, PHITS, CASCADE07, and CEM03.02) used as event-generators in modern transport codes are also reported. However, since such models are generally not able to separately predict ground and isomeric states of reaction products, only 178-Hf independent and cumulative cross-section data are compared.

The radiolanthanide 161Ho (2.48 h) is a promising Auger-electron emitter for internal radiotherapy that can be produced with particle accelerators. The excitation functions of the natDy(p,xn)161Ho and natDy(d,x)161Ho reactions were measured up to 40 and 50 MeV respectively by using the stacked foil activation method and gamma-ray spectrometry. The experimental data were compared with results of the TALYS code available in the TENDL 2011 library [1]. The main parameters of different production routes are discussed.

Verification of high-energy transport codes on the basis of activation data

Nuclide production cross sections measured at ITEP for the targets of nat-Cr, 56-Fe, nat-Ni, 93-Nb, 181-Ta, nat-W, nat-Pb, 209-Bi irradiated by protons with energies from 40 to 2600 MeV were used to estimate the predictive accuracy of several popular high-energy transport codes. A general agreement of the ITEP data with the data obtained by other groups, including the numerous GSI data measured by the inverse kinematics method was found. Simulations of the measured data were performed with the MCNPX (Bertini and ISABEL options), CEM03.02, INCL4.2+ABLA, INCL4.5+ABLA07, PHITS, and CASCADE.07 codes. Deviation factors between the calculated and experimental cross sections have been estimated for each target and for the whole energy range covered by our measurements. Two-dimensional diagrams of deviation factor values were produced for estimating the predictive power of every code for intermediate, not measured masses of nuclei-targets and bombarding energies of protons. Further improvements of all tested here codes are recommended. In addition, new measurements at ITEP of nuclide yields from a 208-Pb target irradiated by 500 MeV protons are presented. A good agreement between these new data and the GSI measurements obtained by the inverse kinematics method was found

Structural effects in the nuclide distributions of the residues of highly excited systems

New data from GSI on the production-cross-section for fragmentation of the systems 56Fe+p and 56Fe+Ti at 1 A GeV revealed the appearance of even-odd staggering in the cross-section distribution for chains of isotopes with given N-Z. The staggering is strongly enhanced for the chain N=Z, it reduces as the production moves away from the N=Z chain, and it reverses for the most neutron-rich odd-A residues. These phenomena, observed in the residues of rather violent reactions, are related to structural effects in the level-densities below the particle-emission threshold.
