Crystallization in melts and poor-solvent solutions of semiflexible polymers: extensive DPD study

In the present work, crystallization in melts and poor-solvent solutions of semiflexible polymers with different concentration was studied by means of dissipative particle dynamics simulation technique. We use a coarse-grained polymer model trying to catch general principles of crystallization in such systems on large time and length scales. We observe the crystallization process starting from an initial randomly prepared system with different polymer volume fractions in a poor solvent. Because the solvent is very poor, the macrophase polymer-solvent separation takes place very fast and is accompanied by partial polymer crystallization. We have found that the overall crystalline fraction at the end of crystallization process decreases upon increasing the polymer volume fraction in the initial randomly prepared system, while the steady-state crystallization speed is almost the same at polymer volume fractions larger than 50\%. At the same time, the average crystallite size differs considerably and has a maximum value in the systems with 90\% polymer volume fraction. We assume that this polymer concentration is an optimal value in a sense of a balance between the amount of polymer material available for increasing crystallite size and chain entanglements preventing crystallites growth and merging.

Microphase Separation in Random Multiblock Copolymers

Microphase separation in random multiblock copolymers is studied with mean-field theory assuming that long blocks of a copolymer are strongly segregated, whereas short blocks are able to penetrate into "alien" domains and exchange between the domains and interfacial layer. A bidisperse copolymer with blocks of only two sizes (long and short) is considered as a model of multiblock copolymers with high polydispersity in the block size. Short blocks of the copolymer play an important role in microphase separation. First, their penetration into the "alien" domains leads to the formation of joint long blocks in their own domains. Second, short blocks localized at the interface considerably change the interfacial tension. The possibility of penetration of short blocks into the "alien" domains is controlled by the product chi*Nsh (chi is the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, Nsh is the short block length). At not very large chi*Nsh, the domain size is larger than that for a regular copolymer consisting of the same long blocks as in the considered random copolymer. At a fixed mean block size, the domain size grows with an increase in the block size dispersity, the rate of the growth being dependent of the more detailed parameters of the block size distribution.

On scale-free and poly-scale behaviors of random hierarchical network

In this paper the question about statistical properties of block--hierarchical random matrices is raised for the first time in connection with structural characteristics of random hierarchical networks obtained by mipmapping procedure. In particular, we compute numerically the spectral density of large random adjacency matrices defined by a hierarchy of the Bernoulli distributions $\{q_1,q_2,...\}$ on matrix elements, where $q_γ$ depends on hierarchy level $γ$ as $q_γ=p^{-μγ}$ ($μ>0$). For the spectral density we clearly see the free--scale behavior. We show also that for the Gaussian distributions on matrix elements with zero mean and variances $σ_γ=p^{-νγ}$, the tail of the spectral density, $ρ_G(λ)$, behaves as $ρ_G(λ) \sim |λ|^{-(2-ν)/(1-ν)}$ for $|λ|\to\infty$ and $0<ν<1$, while for $ν\ge 1$ the power--law behavior is terminated. We also find that the vertex degree distribution of such hierarchical networks has a poly--scale fractal behavior extended to a very broad range of scales.
