Experimental study of the $e^+e^-\to n\bar n$ process at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider with the SND detector

The process $e^+e^-\to n\bar n$ is studied in the experiment at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider with the SND detector. The technique of the time measurements in the multichannel NaI(Tl) electromagnetic calorimeter is used to select nnbar events. The value of the measured cross section in the center-of-mass energy range from 1.894 to 2 GeV varies from 0.5 to 0.35 nb. The effective neutron timelike form factor is derived from the measured cross section and compared with the proton form factor. The ratio of the neutron electric and magnetic form factors is obtained from the analysis of the antineutron polar angle distribution and found to be consistent with unity.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to K^+ K^- π^0$ cross section with the SND detector

The process $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-π^0$ is studied with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. Basing on data with an integrated luminosity of 26.4~pb$^{-1}$ we measure the $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-π^0$ cross section in the center-of-mass energy range from 1.28 up to 2 GeV. The measured mass spectrum of the $Kπ$ system indicates that the dominant mechanism of this reaction is the transition through the $K^{\ast}(892)K$ intermediate state. The cross section for the $ϕπ^0$ intermediate state is measured separately. The SND results are consistent with previous measurements in the BABAR experiment and have comparable accuracy. We study the effect of the interference between the $ϕπ^0$ and $K^\ast K$ amplitudes. It is found that the interference gives sizable contribution to the measured $e^+e^- \to ϕπ^0\to K^+K^-π^0$ cross section below 1.7 GeV.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \toπ^+π^- $ process cross section with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 collider in the energy region $0.525<\sqrt{s}<0.883$ GeV

The cross section of the process $e^+ e^-\toπ^+π^-$ has been measured in the Spherical Neutral Detector (SND) experiment at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider VEPP-2000 in the energy region $525 <\sqrt[]{s} <883$ MeV. The measurement is based on data with an integrated luminosity of about 4.6 pb$^{-1}$. The systematic uncertainty of the cross section determination is 0.8 % at $\sqrt{s}>0.600$ GeV. The $ρ$ meson parameters are obtained as $m_ρ= 775.3\pm 0.5\pm 0.6$ MeV, $Γ_ρ= 145.6\pm 0.6\pm 0.8$ MeV, $B_{ρ\to e^+ e^-}\times B_{ρ\toπ^+π^-} = (4.89\pm 0.02\pm 0.04)\times 10^{-5}$, and the parameters of the $e^+ e^-\toω\toπ^+π^-$ process, suppressed by $G$-parity, as $B_{ω\to e^+ e^-}\times B_{ω\toπ^+π^-}= (1.32\pm 0.06\pm 0.02)\times 10^{-6} $ and $ϕ_{ρω} = 110.7\pm 1.5\pm1.0$ degrees.

Measurement of the $\mathbf{e^+e^-\to K^+K^-}$ cross section in the energy range $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}=1.05-2.0}$ GeV

The $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-$ cross section is measured in the center-of-mass energy range $1.05-2.00$ GeV at the SND detector. The measurement is based on data with an integrated luminosity of 35 pb$^{-1}$ collected at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$-collider. The obtained results are consistent with the previous most accurate data obtained in the BABAR experiment and have a comparable accuracy.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to ωη$ cross section below $\sqrt{s}=2$ GeV

The cross section for the process $e^+e^- \to ωη$ is measured in the center-of-mass energy range 1.34--2.00 GeV. The analysis is based on data collected with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. The measured $e^+e^- \to ωη$ cross section is the most accurate to date. A significant discrepancy is observed between our data and previous BABAR measurement.

Study of the process $e^+e^-\toωηπ^0$ in the energy range $\sqrt{s} <2$ GeV with the SND detector

The process $e^+e^-\toωηπ^0$ is studied in the energy range $1.45-2.00$ GeV using data with an integrated luminosity of 33 pb$^{-1}$ accumulated by the SND detector at the $e^+e^-$ collider VEPP-2000. The $e^+e^-\toωηπ^0$ cross section is measured for the first time. The cross section has a threshold near 1.75 GeV. Its value is about 2 nb in the energy range $1.8-2.0$ GeV. The dominant intermediate state for the process $e^+e^- \to ωηπ^0$ is found to be $ωa_0(980)$.

Study of the reaction $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ with the SND detector at the VEPP-2M collider

The process $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ has been studied in the experiment with the SND detector at the VEPP-2M $e^+e^-$ collider. The $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ cross section has been measured in the center-of-mass energy range from 0.60 to 1.38 GeV. The cross section is well described by the vector meson dominance model. From the fit to the cross section data we have determined the branching fractions $B(ρ\toπ^0γ)=(4.20\pm0.52)\times10^{-4}$, $B(ω\toπ^0γ)=(8.88\pm0.18)\%$, $B(ϕ\toπ^0γ)=(1.367\pm0.072)\times10^{-3}$, and the relative phase between the $ρ$ and $ω$ amplitudes $φ_ρ=(-12.7\pm4.5)^\circ$. Our data on the process $e^+e^- \to π^0γ$ are the most accurate to date.

Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to ηπ^+π^-$ cross section in the center-of-mass energy range 1.22--2.00 GeV with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 collider

In the experiment with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider the cross section for the process $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$ has been measured in the center-of-mass energy range from 1.22 to 2.00 GeV. Obtained results are in agreement with previous measurements and have better accuracy. The energy dependence of the $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$ cross section has been fitted with the vector-meson dominance model. From this fit the product of the branching fractions $B(ρ(1450)\toηπ^+π^-)B(ρ(1450)\to e^+e^-)$ has been extracted and compared with the same products for $ρ(1450)\toωπ^0$ and $ρ(1450)\toπ^+π^-$ decays. The obtained cross section data have been also used to test the conservation of vector current hypothesis.

In the study of the reaction $e^+e^-\to K_{S}K_{L}$ at the VEPP-2M $e^+e^-$ collider with the SND detector the nuclear interaction length of $K_{L}$ meson in NaI(Tl) has been measured. Its value is found to be 30--50 cm in the $K_{L}$ momentum range 0.11--0.48 GeV/$c$. The results are compared with the values used in the simulation programs GEANT4 and UNIMOD.

Search for the $η^{\prime}\to e^+e^-$ decay with the SND detector

A search for the process $e^+e^- \to η^\prime$ has been performed with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. The data were accumulated at the center-of-mass energy of $957.78\pm 0.06$ MeV with an integrated luminosity of about 2.9 pb$^{-1}$. For reconstruction of the $η^\prime$ meson five decay chains have been used: $η^{\prime}\toηπ^+π^-$ followed by the $η$ decays to $γγ$ and $3π^0 $, and $η^{\prime} \to ηπ^0π^0$ followed by the $η$ decays to $π^+π^-π^0$, $γγ$, and $3π^0$. As a result, the upper limit has been set on the $η^\prime$ electronic width: $Γ_{η^{\prime}\to e^+e^-} < 0.0020$ eV at the 90\% confidence level.

Study of e+e- --> omega pi0 --> pi0 pi0 gamma in the energy range 1.05--2.00 GeV with SND

The cross section for the process e+e- --> omega pi0 --> pi0 pi0 gamma has been measured in the energy range 1.05--2.00 GeV. The experiment has been performed at the e+e- collider VEPP-2000 with the SND detector. The measured e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section above 1.4 GeV is the most accurate to date. Below 1.4 GeV our data are in good agreement with the previous SND and CMD-2 measurements. Data on the e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section are well described by the VMD model with two excited rho-like states. From the measured cross section we have extracted the gamma^* --> omega pi0 transition form factor. It has been found that the VDM model cannot describe simultaneously our data and data obtained from the omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- decay. We have also tested CVC hypothesis comparing our results on the e+e- --> omega pi0 cross section with data on the tau- --> omega pi- nu_{tau} decay.

Study of the process $e^+e^-\toηγ$ in the center-of-mass energy range 1.07--2.00 GeV

The $e^+e^-\toηγ$ cross section has been measured in the center-of-mass energy range 1.07--2.00 GeV using the decay mode $η\to 3π^0$, $π^0\to γγ$. The analysis is based on 36 pb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. The measured cross section of about 35 pb at 1.5 GeV is explained by decays of the $ρ(1450)$ and $ϕ(1680)$ resonances.

Upsilon Andromedae b in polarized light: New constraints on the planet size, density and albedo

Polarimetry is a novel tool to detect and characterize exoplanets and their atmospheres. Polarized scattered light from the non-transiting hot Jupiter $\upsilon$~And~b is measured to further constrain its orbit, mass, density, and geometrical albedo. We obtained polarimetric measurements in the $UBV$ bands over the orbital period and deduce an average peak-to-peak amplitude of $(49 \pm 5)\times10^{-6}$ in both Stokes $q$ and $u$. From our data we evaluate the orbit inclination $i=111\degr\pm11\degr$, longitude of the ascending node $Ω=236\degr\pm12\degr$ (or equivalently 56\degr), the effective size of the scattering atmosphere in the optical blue of $1.36\pm0.20$\,$R_{\rm J}$. These combined with spectroscopic measurements result in the planet mass $0.74\pm0.07$\,$M_{\rm J}$, mean density $0.36\pm0.08$\,g\,cm$^{-3}$, and surface gravity $\sim10^3$\,cm\,s$^{-2}$, which favor a close similarity of $\upsilon$~And~b to other inflated hot Jupiters. We also significantly improved the periastron epoch $T_{\rm p}={\rm JD}2,450,032.451$, interior conjunction epoch $T_{\rm t}={\rm JD}2,450,034.668$, and periastron longitude $ω=279\degr\pm14\degr$. The latter indicates that the apsidal resonance known for planets c and d includes also planet b. Obtained limits on the wavelength dependent geometrical albedo (average 0.35) indicate its similarity to Neptune with peak reflectivity in the blue. Combining all available measurements at various passbands, we construct a unified wavelength dependent albedo of an average hot Jupiter. It appears to be largely shaped by Rayleigh scattering in the blue and atomic and molecular absorption in the optical and near infrared. Our findings demonstrate the power of polarimetry for studying non-transiting exoplanets.

Polarized reflected light from the exoplanet HD189733b: First multicolor observations and confirmation of detection

We report first multicolor polarimetric measurements (UBV bands) for the hot Jupiters HD189733b and confirm our previously reported detection of polarization in the B band (Berdyugina et al. 2008). The wavelength dependence of polarization indicates the dominance of Rayleigh scattering with a peak in the blue B and U bands of ~10^-4+/-10^-5 and at least a factor of two lower signal in the V band. The Rayleigh-like wavelength dependence, detected also in the transmitted light during transits, implies a rapid decrease of the polarization signal toward longer wavelengths. Therefore, the nondetection by Wiktorowicz (2009), based on a measurement integrated within a broad passband covering the V band and partly B and R bands, is inconclusive and consistent with our detection in B. We discuss possible sources of the polarization and demonstrate that effects of incomplete cancellation of stellar limb polarization due to starspots or tidal perturbations are negligible as compared to scattering polarization in the planetary atmosphere. We compare the observations with a Rayleigh-Lambert model and determine effective radii and geometrical albedos for different wavelengths. We find a close similarity of the wavelength dependent geometrical albedo with that of the Neptune atmosphere, which is known to be strongly influenced by Rayleigh and Raman scattering. Our result establishes polarimetry as a reliable means for directly studying exoplanetary atmospheres.

Experimental study of the e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0 reaction by SND detector in the energy range sqrt{s}=0.42--1.38 GeV

The review of the SND results of the $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0$ process study in the energy range $\sqrt[]{s}=0.42$ -- 1.38 GeV at VEPP-2M collider, based on about $2\times 10^6$ selected events, is presented. The total cross section, parameters of the $ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$ resonances, and $ω^\prime$, $ω^{\prime\prime}$ states were obtained. It was found that $ρπ$ and $ωπ^0$ intermediate states describe the reaction dynamics. The experimental data cannot be described by a sum of only $ω$, $ϕ$, $ω^\prime$ and $ω^{\prime\prime}$ resonances contributions. This can be interpreted as a manifestation of the $ρ\to 3π$ decay, suppressed by $G$-parity, with relative probability $B(ρ\to 3π) = (1.01\pm^{0.54}_{0.36}\pm 0.034) \times 10^{-4}$.

Study of the $ππ$ mass spectra in the process $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-π^0$ at $\sqrt[]{s} \simeq 1020$ MeV

The invariant mass spectra of the $π^+π^-$ and $π^\pmπ^0$ pairs in the process $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-π^0$ were studied in the SND experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s} \simeq 1020$ MeV. These studies were based on about $0.5 \times 10^6$ experimental events. The spectra were analyzed in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. It was found that the experimental data can be described with $e^+e^- \to ρπ\to π^+π^-π^0$ transition only. Upper limit on the branching ratio of the $ϕ(1020)\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decay through intermediate states different from $ρπ$ was obtained at the 90 % confidence level: $B(ϕ\toπ^+π^-π^0)<6 \cdot 10^{-4}$. The $ρ$-meson mass and width which follow from the spectra analysis are $m_ρ=775.0\pm 1.3$ MeV, $Γ_ρ=150.4 \pm 3.0$ MeV. Neutral and charged $ρ$-mesons mass difference was found to equal $m_{ρ^\pm}-m_{ρ^0}=-1.3\pm2.3$ MeV. In the $π^+π^-$ mass spectrum the $ρ-ω$ interference was seen at two standard deviations level.

First Physical Results from SND Detector at VEPP-2M

The paper describes experiments with the SND detector at VEPP-2M collider, carried out during the period from October 1995 until June 1997. The total integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb^{-1} was collected in the energy range 2E=0.4-1.4 GeV (MHAD97 experiment), corresponding to 4*10^5 mu^+ mu^- pairs produced. Preliminary results of the 1996 phi-meson experiment (FI96) are presented. The total number of phi-mesons produced is 4*10^6. New data on rare decays of phi and eta (550) mesons, in particular B(phi -> eta gamma) = (1.30+-0.06+-0.07)%, B(phi -> pi^0 pi^0 gamma) = (1.1+-0.2)*10^{-4}, (M_{pi^0 pi^0} > 800 MeV), B(phi -> f^0 gamma) = (4.7+-1.0)*10^{-4}, B(phi -> eta pi^0 gamma) = (1.3+-0.5)*10^{-4}, B(phi -> eta' gamma) < 1.7*10^{-4}, B(phi -> 2 pi^0 ) < 6*10^{-4} were obtained.
