A non-abelian quasi-particle model for gluon plasma

We propose a quasi-particle model for the thermodynamic description of the gluon plasma which takes into account non-abelian characteristics of the gluonic field. This is accomplished utilizing massive non-linear plane wave solutions of the classical equations of motion with a variable mass parameter, reflecting the scale invariance of the Yang-Mills Lagrangian. For the statistical description of the gluon plasma we interpret these non-linear waves as quasi-particles with a temperature dependent mass distribution. Quasi-Gaussian distributions with a common variance but different temperature dependent mean masses for the longitudinal and transverse modes are employed. We use recent Lattice results to fix the mean transverse and longitudinal masses while the variance is fitted to the equation of state of pure $SU(3)$ on the Lattice. Thus, our model succeeds to obtain both a consistent description of the gluon plasma energy density as well as a correct behaviour of the mass parameters near the critical point.

Gauss' Law and Non-Linear Plane Waves for Yang-Mills Theory

We investigate Non-Linear Plane-Wave solutions of the classical Minkowskian Yang-Mills (YM) equations of motion. By imposing a suitable ansatz which solves Gauss' law for the $SU(3)$ theory, we derive solutions which consist of Jacobi elliptic functions depending on an enumerable set of elliptic modulus values. The solutions represent periodic anharmonic plane waves which possess arbitrary non-zero mass and are exact extrema of the non-linear YM action. Among them, a unique harmonic plane wave with a non-trivial pattern in phase, spin and color is identified. Similar solutions are present in the $SU(4)$ case while are absent from the $SU(2)$ theory.

Oscillons and oscillating kinks in the Abelian-Higgs model

We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian Higgs model employing an asymptotic multiscale expansion method, which uses the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field amplitudes as a small parameter. We derive an effective nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the gauge field, and a linear equation for the scalar field containing the gauge field as a nonlinear source. This equation is used to predict the existence of oscillons and oscillating kinks for certain regimes of the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field masses. Results of numerical simulations are found to be in very good agreement with the analytical findings, and show that the oscillons are robust, while kinks are unstable. It is also demonstrated that oscillons emerge spontaneously as a result of the onset of the modulational instability of plane wave solutions of the model. Connections of the obtained solutions with the phenomenology of superconductors is discussed.

Determination of the $Δ(1232)$ axial and pseudoscalar form factors from lattice QCD

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the $Δ(1232)$ matrix elements of the axial-vector and pseudoscalar currents. The decomposition of these matrix elements into the appropriate Lorentz invariant form factors is carried out and the techniques to calculate the form factors are developed and tested using quenched configurations. Results are obtained for 2+1 domain wall fermions and within a hybrid scheme with domain wall valence and staggered sea quarks. Two Goldberger-Treiman type relations connecting the axial to the pseudoscalar effective couplings are derived. These and further relations based on the pion-pole dominance hypothesis are examined using the lattice QCD results, finding support for their validity. Utilizing lattice QCD results on the axial charges of the nucleon and the $Δ$, as well as the nucleon-to-$Δ$ transition coupling constant, we perform a combined chiral fit to all three quantities and study their pion mass dependence as the chiral limit is approached.

Maxwell Construction for Scalar Field Theories with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

Using a non-perturbative approximation for the partition function of a complex scalar model, which features spontaneous symmetry breaking, we explicitly derive the flattening of the effective potential in the region limited by the minima of the bare potential. This flattening occurs in the limit of infinite volume, and is a consequence of the summation over the continuous set of saddle points which dominate the partition function. We also prove the convexity of the effective potential and generalize the Maxwell Construction for scalar theories with O(N) symmetry. Finally, we discuss why the flattening of the effective potential cannot occur in the Abelian Higgs theory.

Oscillons and oscillating kinks in the Abelian-Higgs model

We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian Higgs model employing an asymptotic multiscale expansion method, which uses the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field amplitudes as a small parameter. We derive an effective nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the gauge field, and a linear equation for the scalar field containing the gauge field as a nonlinear source. This equation is used to predict the existence of oscillons and oscillating kinks for certain regimes of the ratio of the Higgs to the gauge field masses. Results of direct numerical simulations are found to be in very good agreement with the analytical findings, and show that the oscillons are robust, while kinks are unstable. It is also demonstrated that oscillons emerge spontaneously as a result of the onset of the modulational instability of plane wave solutions of the model. Connections of the results with the phenomenology of superconductors is discussed.

A multi-scale perturbative approach to SU(2)-Higgs classical dynamics: stability of nonlinear plane waves and bounds of the Higgs field mass

We study the classical dynamics of SU(2)-Higgs field theory using multiple scale perturbation theory. In the spontaneously broken phase, assuming small perturbations of the Higgs field around its vacuum expectation value, we derive a nonlinear Schroedinger equation and study the stability of its nonlinear plane wave solutions. The latter, turn out to be stable only if the Higgs amplitude is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the gauge field. In this case, the Higgs field mass possesses some bounds which may be relevant to the search for the Higgs particle at ongoing experiments.

Liouville-Lifshitz theory in 3+1 dimensions

We consider a four-dimensional theory in the z=3 Lifshitz context, with an exponential (Liouville) potential. We determine the exact renormalized potential of the theory and derive the non-perturbative relation between the renormalized and bare couplings. In addition, we show that Lorentz symmetry is naturally generated by quantum fluctuations in the infrared regime, and conclude that the model can be relevant to High Energy Physics.

Non-Linear Sigma Model and asymptotic freedom at the Lifshitz point

We construct the general O(N)-symmetric non-linear sigma model in 2+1 spacetime dimensions at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z=2. For a particular choice of the free parameters, the model is asymptotically free with the beta function coinciding to the one for the conventional sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. In this case, the model admits also a simple description in terms of adjoint currents.

Nucleon to Delta transition form factors with $N_F=2+1$ domain wall fermions

We calculate the electromagnetic, axial and pseudo-scalar form factors of the Nucleon to $Δ(1232)$ transition using two dynamical light degenerate quarks and a dynamical strange quark simulated with the domain wall fermion action. Results are obtained at lattice spacings $a = 0.114$ fm and $a=0.084$ fm, with corresponding pion masses of $330$ MeV and $297$ MeV, respectively. High statistics measurements are achieved by utilizing the coherent sink technique. The dominant electromagnetic dipole form factor, the axial form factors and the pseudo-scalar coupling are extracted to a good accuracy. This allows the investigation of the non-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation. Particular emphasis is given on the extraction of the sub-dominant electromagnetic quadrupole form factors and their ratio to the dominant dipole form factor, $R_{EM}$ and $R_{SM}$, measured in experiment.

Schwinger-Dyson approach for a Lifshitz-type Yukawa model

We consider a 3+1 dimensional field theory at a Lifshitz point for a dynamical critical exponent z=3, with a scalar and a fermion field coupled via a Yukawa interaction. Using the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson approach we calculate quantum corrections to the effective action. We demonstrate that a first order derivative kinetic term as well as a mass term for the fermion arise dynamically. This signals the restoration of Lorentz symmetry in the IR regime of the single fermion model, although for theories with more than one fermionic species such a conclusion will require fine-tuning of couplings. The limitations of the model and our approach are discussed.

Delta electromagnetic form factors and quark transverse charge densities from lattice QCD

We discuss the techniques to extract the electromagnetic Delta form factors in Lattice QCD. We evaluate these form factors using dynamical fermions with smallest pion mass of about 350 MeV. We pay particular attention to the extraction of the electric quadrupole form factor that signals a deformation of the Delta. The magnetic moment of the $Δ$ is extrapolated using a chiral effective field theory. Using the form factors we evaluate the transverse density distributions in the infinite momentum frame showing deformation in the Delta.

Delta-baryon electromagnetic form factors in lattice QCD

We develop techniques to calculate the four Delta electromagnetic form factors using lattice QCD, with particular emphasis on the sub-dominant electric quadrupole form factor that probes deformation of the Delta. Results are presented for pion masses down to approximately 350 MeV for three cases: quenched QCD, two flavors of dynamical Wilson quarks, and three flavors of quarks described by a mixed action combining domain wall valence quarks and dynamical staggered sea quarks. The magnetic moment of the Delta is chirally extrapolated to the physical point and the Delta charge density distributions are discussed.

Axial Nucleon and Nucleon to Delta form fractors and the Goldberger-Treiman Relations from Lattice QCD

We evaluate the nucleon axial form factor, $G_A(q^2)$, and induced pseudoscalar form factor, $G_p(q^2)$, as well as the pion-nucleon form factor, $G_{πN N}(q^2)$, in lattice QCD. We also evaluate the corresponding nucleon to $Δ$ transition form factors, $C_5^A(q^2)$ and $C_6^A(q^2)$, and the pion-nucleon-$Δ$ form factor $G_{πNΔ}(q^2)$. The nucleon form factors are evaluated in the quenched theory and with two degenerate flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions. The nucleon to $Δ$ form factors, besides Wilson fermions, are evaluated using domain wall valence fermions with staggered sea quark configurations for pion masses as low as about 350 MeV. Using these form factors, together with an evaluation of the renormalized quark mass, we investigate the validity of the diagonal and non-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relations. The ratios $G_{πNΔ}(q^2)/G_{πNN}(q^2)$ and $2C_5^A(q^2)/G_A(q^2)$ are constant as a function of the momentum transfer squared and show almost no dependence on the quark mass. We confirm equality of these two ratios consistent with the Goldberger-Treiman relations extracting a mean value of $1.61(2)$.

Static three- and four-quark potentials

We present results for the static three- and four-quark potentials in SU(3) and SU(4) respectively. Using a variational approach, combined with multi-hit for the time-like links, we determine the ground state of the baryonic string with sufficient accuracy to test the $Y-$ and $Δ-$ ansätze for the baryonic Wilson area law. Our results favor the $Δ$ ansatz, where the potential is the sum of two-body terms.

The Static Baryon Potential

Using state of the art lattice techniques we investigate the static baryon potential. We employ the multi-hit procedure for the time links and a variational approach to determine the ground state with sufficient accuracy that, for distances up to $\sim 1.2$ fm, we can distinguish the $Y$- and $Δ$- Ansätze for the baryonic Wilson area law. Our analysis shows that the $Δ$-Ansatz is favoured. This result is also supported by the gauge-invariant nucleon wave function which we measure for the first time.
