Differential Cross Sections for Neutron-Proton Scattering in the Region of the $d^*(2380)$ Dibaryon Resonance

Differential cross sections have been extracted from exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized $\vec{n}p$ scattering performed in the energy region of the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance covering the the range of beam energies $T_n$ = 0.98 - 1.29 GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.32 - 2.44 GeV). The experiment was carried out with the WASA-at-COSY setup having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process $dp \to np + p_{spectator}$. That way the $np$ differential cross section $σ(Θ)$ was measured over a large angular range. The obtained angular distributions complement the corresponding analyzing power $A_y(Θ)$ measurements published previously. A SAID partial-wave analysis incorporating the new data strengthens the finding of a resonance pole in the coupled $^3D_3 - ^3G_3$ waves.

Isoscalar Single-Pion Production in the Region of Roper and $d^*(2380)$ Resonances

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pn \to ppπ^-$ and $pp \to ppπ^0$ reactions have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $T_p = 0.95 - 1.3$ GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.3 - 2.46 GeV), which includes the regions of $Δ(1232)$, $N^*(1440)$ and $d^*(2380)$ resonance excitations. From these measurements the isoscalar single-pion production has been extracted, for which data existed so far only below $T_p$ = 1 GeV. We observe a substantial increase of this cross section above 1 GeV, which can be related to the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$, the strength of which shows up isolated from the $Δ$ resonance in the isoscalar $(Nπ)_{I=0}$ invariant-mass spectrum. No evidence for a decay of the dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ into the isoscalar $(NNπ)_{I=0}$ channel is found. An upper limit of 90 $μ$b (90 $\%$ C.L.) corresponding to a branching ratio of 5 $\%$ has been deduced.

Search for eta mesic 3He with the WASA-at-COSY facility in the pd-> 3He 2gamma and pd-> 3He 6gamma reactions

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an $η$ meson and $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the $η$-mesic nucleus decay, the $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 2γ$ and $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 6γ$ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of $η$ meson bound in $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to an $^3$He-$η$ nucleus width $Γ$ above 20 MeV and binding energy $B_s$ between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the $η$-mesic $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus formation followed by the $η$ meson decay which varies between $2$ nb and $15$ nb depending on possible bound state parameters.

Spectator induced electromagnetic effects in heavy-ion collisions and space-time-momentum conditions for pion emission

We present our calculation of electromagnetic effects, induced by the spectator charge on Feynman-$x_F$ distributions of charged pions in peripheral $Pb+Pb$ collisions at CERN SPS energies, including realistic initial space-time-momentum conditions for pion emission. The calculation is performed in the framework of our simplified implementation of the fire-streak model, adopted to the production of both $π^-$ and $π^+$ mesons. Isospin effects are included to take into account the asymmetry in production of $π^+$ and $π^-$ at high rapidity. A comparison to a simpler model from the literature is made. We obtain a good description of the NA49 data on the $x_F$- and $p_T$-dependence of the ratio of cross sections $π^+/π^-$. The experimental data favors short times ($0.5<τ<2$~fm/$c$) for fast pion creation in the local fire-streak rest frame. The possibility of the expansion of the spectators is considered in our calculation, and its influence on the electromagnetic effect observed for the $π^+/π^-$ ratio is discussed. In addition we discuss the relation between anisotropic flow and the electromagnetic distortion of $π^+/π^-$ ratios, and study the influence of transverse expansion of fire streaks as well as their vorticity on this distortion. In this latter study we find that inclusion of rotation of fire streaks in our model gives a satisfactory description of the rapidity dependence of pion directed flow. We conclude that {our implementation of the} fire-streak model, which properly describes the centrality dependence of $π^-$ rapidity spectra at CERN SPS energies, also provides a quantitative description of the electromagnetic effect on the $π^+/π^-$ ratio as a function of $x_F$.

Exclusive production of $ϕ$ meson in the $γ^*\,p \to ϕ\,p$ reaction at large photon virtualities within $k_T$-factorization approach

We apply the $k_T$-factorization approach to the production of $ϕ$ meson in deep-inelastic scattering. The helicity-conserving $γ^*(T,L) \to ϕ$ impact factor is calculated for longitudinal and transverse photon polarization using $ϕ$ meson distribution amplitudes. Different unintegrated gluon distributions are used in the calculations. The formalism for massless quarks/antiquarks gives too large transverse and longitudinal cross sections for photon virtualities below $Q^2\sim 8 \, \rm{GeV}^2$. We suggest how to improve the description of the HERA data by introducing effective strange quark masses into the formalism. We derive the corresponding massive impact factor by comparing to the light-cone wave function representation used in previous $k_T$-factorization calculations and the color-dipole approaches. As a byproduct we present expressions for higher twist-amplitudes as weighted integrals over the light-cone wave function. The quark mass $m_q \approx 0.5$ GeV allows to improve the description of both longitudinal and transverse cross section down to $Q^2 \sim$ 4 GeV$^2$. We present also the polarized cross section ratio $σ_L/σ_T$ and the behavior of the total cross section $σ_{tot} = σ_{L} + σ_{T}$ as a function of photon virtuality.

Study of Three-Nucleon Dynamics in the dp breakup collisions using the WASA detector

Differential cross section for the 1H(d,pp)n breakup reaction at deuteron beam energy of 340 MeV has been measured with the use of WASA detector at COSY-Juelich. The set of proton-proton coincidences registered at Forward Detector has been analysed on dense grid of kinematic variables, giving in total around 5600 data points. The cross section data are compared to theoretical predictions based on the state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potentials, combined with three-nucleon force, Coulomb interaction or carried out in a relativistic regime.

Technical Design Report for the PANDA Endcap Disc DIRC

PANDA (anti-Proton ANnihiliation at DArmstadt) is planned to be one of the four main experiments at the future international accelerator complex FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany. It is going to address fundamental questions of hadron physics and quantum chromodynamics using cooled antiproton beams with a high intensity and and momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c. PANDA is designed to reach a maximum luminosity of 2x10^32 cm^2 s. Most of the physics programs require an excellent particle identification (PID). The PID of hadronic states at the forward endcap of the target spectrometer will be done by a fast and compact Cherenkov detector that uses the detection of internally reflected Cherenkov light (DIRC) principle. It is designed to cover the polar angle range from 5° to 22° and to provide a separation power for the separation of charged pions and kaons up to 3 standard deviations (s.d.) for particle momenta up to 4 GeV/c in order to cover the important particle phase space. This document describes the technical design and the expected performance of the novel PANDA Disc DIRC detector that has not been used in any other high energy physics experiment (HEP) before. The performance has been studied with Monte-Carlo simulations and various beam tests at DESY and CERN. The final design meets all PANDA requirements and guarantees suffcient safety margins.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Measurement of the $\vec{n}p \to dπ^0π^0$ Reaction with Polarized Beam in the Region of the $d^*(2380)$ Resonance

We report on a high-statistics measurement of the most basic double pionic fusion reaction $\vec{n}p \to dπ^0π^0$ over the energy region of the $d^*(2380)$ resonance by use of a polarized deuteron beam and observing the double fusion reaction in the quasifree scattering mode. The measurements were performed with the WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal substantial analyzing powers and confirm conclusions about the $d^*$ resonance obtained from unpolarized measurements. We also confirm the previous unpolarized data obtained under complementary kinematic conditions.

Photoproduction of vector mesons: from ultraperipheral to semi-central heavy ion collisions

We discuss nuclear cross sections for $AA \to AAV$ and $AA \to AAVV$ reactions with one or two vector mesons in the final state. Our analysis is done in the impact parameter space equivalent photon approximation. This approach allows to consider the above processes taking into account distance between colliding nuclei. We consider both ultraperipheral and semi-central collisions. We are a first group which undertook a study of single $J/ψ$ photoproduction for different centrality bins. We show that one can describe new ALICE experimental data by including geometrical effects of collisions in the flux factor. Next, total and differential cross section for double-scattering mechanism in the exclusive $AA \to AAVV$ reaction in ultrarelativistic ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is presented. In this context we consider double photoproduction and photon-photon processes. Simultaneously, we get very good agreement of our results with STAR (RHIC), CMS and ALICE (LHC) experimental data for single $ρ^0$ and $J/ψ$ vector meson production. A comparison of our predictions for exclusive four charged pions production is also presented.

Search for an Isospin I =3 Dibaryon

Various theoretical calculations based on QCD or hadronic interactions predict that in addition to the recently observed dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ with $I(J^P) = 0(3^+)$ there should also exist a dibaryon resonance with mirrored quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 3(0^+)$. We report here on a search for such a $NN$-decoupled state in data on the $pp \to ppπ^+π^+π^-π^-$ reaction. Since no clear-cut evidence has been found, we give upper limits for the production cross section of such a resonance in the mass range 2280 - 2500 MeV.

Charge splitting of directed flow and charge-dependent effects in pion spectra in heavy ion collisions

The large and rapidly varying electric and magnetic fields induced by the spectator systems moving at ultrarelativistic velocities induce a charge splitting of directed flow, $v_1$, of positive and negative pions in the final state of the heavy ion collision. The same effect results in a very sizeable distortion of charged pion spectra as well as ratios of charged pions ($π^+/π^-$) emitted at high values of rapidity. Both phenomena are sensitive to the actual distance between the pion emission site and the spectator system. This distance $d_E$ appears to decrease with increasing rapidity of the pion, and comes below $\sim$1~fm for pions emitted close to beam rapidity. In this paper we discuss how these findings can shed new light on the space-time evolution of pion production as a function of rapidity, and on the longitudinal evolution of the system created in heavy ion collisions.

Measurements of Branching Ratios for $η$ Decays into Charged Particles

The WASA-at-COSY experiment has collected $3\times10^{7}$ events with $η$-mesons produced via the reaction $pd\rightarrow{^{3}\textrm{He}}η$ at $\textrm{T} = 1.0 \textrm{GeV}$. Using this data set, we evaluate the branching ratios of the decays $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}γ$, $η\to e^{+}e^{-}γ$, $η\toπ^{+}π^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ and $η\to e^{+}e^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$. The branching ratios are normalized to the $η\rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ decay. In addition an upper limit on a $CP$-violating asymmetry in $η\rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ is extracted.

Proceedings of the Sixth International Workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions at the Large Hadron Collider

Multiple Partonic Interactions are often crucial for interpreting results obtained at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The quest for a sound understanding of the dynamics behind MPI - particularly at this time when the LHC is due to start its "Run II" operations - has focused the aim of this workshop. MPI@LHC2014 concentrated mainly on the phenomenology of LHC measurements whilst keeping in perspective those results obtained at previous hadron colliders. The workshop has also debated some of the state-of-the-art theoretical considerations and the modeling of MPI in Monte Carlo event generators. The topics debated in the workshop included: Phenomenology of MPI processes and multiparton distributions; Considerations for the description of MPI in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD); Measuring multiple partonic interactions; Experimental results on inelastic hadronic collisions: underlying event, minimum bias, forward energy flow; Monte Carlo generator development and tuning; Connections with low-x phenomena, diffraction, heavy-ion physics and cosmic rays. In a total of 57 plenary talks the workshop covered a wide range of experimental results, Monte Carlo development and tuning, phenomenology and dedicated measurements of MPI which were produced with data from the LHC's Run I. Recent progress of theoretical understanding of MPI in pp, pA and AA collisions as well as the role of MPI in diffraction and small-x physics were also covered. The workshop forstered close contact between the experimental and theoretical communities. It provided a setting to discuss many of the different aspects of MPI, eventually identifying them as a unifying concept between apparently different lines of research and evaluating their impact on the LHC physics programme.

ABC Effect and Resonance Structure in the Double-Pionic Fusion to $^3$He

Exclusive and kinematically complete measurements of the double pionic fusion to $^3$He have been performed in the energy region of the so-called ABC effect, which denotes a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $ππ$-invariant mass spectrum. The experiments were carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY. Similar to the observations in the basic $pn \to d π^0π^0$ reaction and in the $dd \to ^4$He$π^0π^0$ reaction, the data reveal a correlation between the ABC effect and a resonance-like energy dependence in the total cross section. Differential cross sections are well described by the hypothesis of $d^*$ resonance formation during the reaction process in addition to the conventional $t$-channel $ΔΔ$ mechanism. The deduced $d^*$ resonance width can be understood from collision broadening due to Fermi motion of the nucleons in initial and final nuclei.

Charge Symmetry Breaking in dd->4Heπ0 with WASA-at-COSY

Charge symmetry breaking (CSB) observables are a suitable experimental tool to examine effects induced by quark masses on the nuclear level. Previous high precision data from TRIUMF and IUCF are currently used to develop a consistent description of CSB within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. In this work the experimental studies on the reaction dd->4Heπ0 have been extended towards higher excess energies in order to provide information on the contribution of p-waves in the final state. For this, an exclusive measurement has been carried out at a beam momentum of p=1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section amounts to sigma(tot) = (118 +- 18(stat) +- 13(sys) +- 8(ext)) pb and first data on the differential cross section are consistent with s-wave pion production.

Cross section ratio and angular distributions of the reaction p + d -> 3He + eta at 48.8 MeV and 59.8 MeV excess energy

We present new data for angular distributions and on the cross section ratio of the p + d -> 3He + eta reaction at excess energies of Q = 48.8 MeV and Q = 59.8 MeV. The data have been obtained at the WASA-at-COSY experiment (Forschungszentrum Jülich) using a proton beam and a deuterium pellet target. While the shape of obtained angular distributions show only a slow variation with the energy, the new results indicate a distinct and unexpected total cross section fluctuation between Q = 20 MeV and Q = 60 MeV, which might indicate the variation of the production mechanism within this energy interval.

Evidence for a New Resonance from Polarized Neutron-Proton Scattering

Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized $\vec{n}p$ scattering have been performed in the energy region of the narrow resonance structure $d^*$ with $I(J^P) = 0(3^+)$, $M \approx$ 2380 MeV/$c^2$ and $Γ\approx$ 70 MeV observed recently in the double-pionic fusion channels $pn \to dπ^0π^0$ and $pn \to dπ^+π^-$. The experiment was carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process $\vec{d}p \to np + p_{spectator}$. That way the $np$ analyzing power $A_y$ was measured over a large angular range. The obtained $A_y$ angular distributions deviate systematically from the current SAID SP07 NN partial-wave solution. Incorporating the new $A_y$ data into the SAID analysis produces a pole in the $^3D_3 - ^3G_3$ waves as expected from the $d^*$ resonance hypothesis.

Investigation of the dd -> 3He n π0 reaction with the FZ Jülich WASA-at-COSY facility

An exclusive measurement of the dd -> 3He n π0 reaction was carried at a beam momentum of p = 1.2 GeV/c using the WASA-at-COSY facility. For the first time data on the total cross section as well as differential distributions were obtained. The data are described with a phenomenological approach based on a combination of a quasi-free model and a partial wave expansion for three-body reaction. The total cross section is found to be σ(tot) = (2.89 +- 0.01(stat) +- 0.06(sys) +- 0.29(norm)) μb. The contribution of the quasi-free processes (with the neutron being target or beam spectator) accounts for 38% of the total cross section and dominates the differential distributions in specific regions of the phase space. The remaining part of the cross section can be described within a partial wave decomposition indicating the significance of p-wave contributions in the final state.

Measurement of the $np \to npπ^0π^0$ Reaction in Search for the Recently Observed $d^*(2380)$ Resonance

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $np \to npπ^0π^0$ reaction have been performed by means of $dp$ collisions at $T_d$ = 2.27 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $\sqrt s$ = (2.35 - 2.46) GeV, which includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated $d^*(2380)$ resonance. Adding the $d^*$ resonance amplitude to that for the conventional processes leads to a reasonable description of the data. The observed resonance effect in the total cross section is in agreement with the predictions of Fäldt and Wilkin as well Albadajedo and Oset. The ABC effect, {\it i.e.} the low-mass enhancement in the $π^0π^0$-invariant mass spectrum, is found to be very modest - if present at all, which might pose a problem to some of its interpretations.

Neutron-Proton Scattering in the Context of the $d^*$(2380) Resonance

New data on quasifree polarized neutron-proton scattering, in the region of the recently observed $d^*$ resonance structure, have been obtained by exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements with WASA at COSY. This paper details the determination of the beam polarization, checks of the quasifree character of the scattering process, on all obtained $A_y$ angular distributions and on the new partial-wave analysis, which includes the new data producing a resonance pole in the $^3D_3$-$^3G_3$ coupled partial waves at ($2380\pm10 - i40\pm5$) MeV -- in accordance with the $d^*$ dibaryon resonance hypothesis. The effect of the new partial-wave solution on the description of total and differential cross section data as well as specific combinations of spin-correlation and spin-transfer observables available from COSY-ANKE measurements at $T_d$ = 2.27 GeV is discussed.

π^0 π^0 Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at Tp=1.4 GeV

The reaction pp->pppi0pi0 has been investigated at a beam energy of 1.4 GeV using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section is found to be (324 +- 21_systematic +- 58_normalization) mub. In order to to study the production mechanism, differential kinematical distributions have been evaluated. The differential distributions indicate that both initial state protons are excited into intermediate Delta(1232) resonances, each decaying into a proton and a single pion, thereby producing the pion pair in the final state. No significant contribution of the Roper resonance N*(1440) via its decay into a proton and two pions is found

Interparticle correlations in the production of J/ψpairs in proton-proton collisions

We focus on the problem of disentangling the single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scattering modes in the production of \J pairs at the LHC conditions. Our analysis is based on comparing the shapes of the differential cross sections and on studying their behavior under imposing kinematical cuts. On the SPS side, we consider the leading-order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ contribution with radiative corrections (taken into account in the framework of the \ktf approach) and the subleading ${\cal O}(α_s^6)$ contribution from \pd ~gluon-gluon scattering represented by one gluon exchange and two gluon exchange mechanisms. We come to the conclusion that disentangling the SPS and DPS modes is rather difficult on the basis of azimuthal correlations, while the rapidity difference looks more promising, provided the acceptance of the experimental detectors has enough rapidity range.

Measurement of the $pn \to ppπ^0π^-$ Reaction in Search for the Recently Observed Resonance Structure in $dπ^0π^0$ and $dπ^+π^-$ systems

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pn \to ppπ^0π^-$ reaction have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $\sqrt s$ = (2.35 - 2.46) GeV, which includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated resonance structure. No ABC effect, {\it i.e.} low-mass enhancement is found in the $π^0π^-$-invariant mass spectrum -- in agreement with the constraint from Bose statistics that the isovector pion pair can not be in relative s-wave. At the upper end of the covered energy region $t$-channel processes for Roper, $Δ(1600)$ and $ΔΔ$ excitations provide a reasonable description of the data, but at low energies the measured cross sections are much larger than predicted by such processes. Adding a resonance amplitude for the resonance at $m$=~2.37 GeV with $Γ$ =~70 MeV and $I(J^P)=~0(3^+)$ observed recently in $pn \to dπ^0π^0$ and $pn \to dπ^+π^-$ reactions leads to an agreement with the data also at low energies.

A search for a dark photon U produced in the pi0 --> gamma U --> gamma e+e- decay from the pp-->ppπ^0 reaction was carried out. An upper limit on the square of the U-gamma mixing strength parameter epsilon^2 of 5e-6 at 90% CL was obtained for the mass range 20 MeV <M_U< 100 MeV. Search for the eta-mesic 4He with WASA-at-COSY detector

An exclusive measurement of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi- reaction was performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY-Juelich with the WASA-at-COSY detection system. The data were taken during a slow acceleration of the beam from 2.185 GeV/c to 2.400 GeV/c crossing the kinematic threshold for the eta meson production in the dd->4He-eta reaction at 2.336 GeV/c. The corresponding excess energy with respect to the 4He-eta system varied from -51.4MeV to 22MeV. The integrated luminosity in the experiment was determined using the dd->3Hen reaction. The shape of the excitation function for the dd->3Heppi- was examined. No signal of the 4He-eta bound state was observed. An upper limit for the cross-section for the bound state formation and decay in the process dd->(4He-eta)bound->3Heppi- was determined on the 90% confidence level and it varies from 20nb to 27nb for the bound state width ranging from 5MeV to 35MeV, respectively.

ABC Resonance Structure in the Double-Pionic Fusion to 4He

Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of the double pionic fusion reaction $dd \to ^4$He$π^0π^0$ have been performed in the energy range 0.8 - 1.4 GeV covering thus the region of the ABC effect, which denotes a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $ππ$-invariant mass spectrum. The experiments were carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY. Similar to the observation in the basic $pn \to d π^0π^0$ reaction, the data reveal a correlation between the ABC effect and a resonance-like energy dependence in the total cross section. The maximum occurs at m=2.37 GeV + 2$m_N$, i.e. at the same position as in the basic reaction. The observed resonance width $Γ\approx$ 160 MeV can be understood from broadening due to Fermi motion of the nucleons in initial and final nuclei together with collision damping. Differential cross sections are described equally well by the hypothesis of a $pn$ resonance formation during the reaction process.

We present predictions for rapidity distributions of exclusive coherent J/Psi and Upsilon mesons which can be measured by the ALICE experiment at the LHC.

We report on a high-statistics measurement of the basic double pionic fusion reaction $pn \to dπ^0π^0$ over the energy region of the so-called ABC effect, a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $ππ$-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements were performed with the WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the ABC effect to be associated with a Lorentzian shaped energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a resonance with $I(J^P) =0(3^+)$ in both $pn$ and $ΔΔ$ systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.

Exclusive $π^+π^-$ Production at the LHC with Forward Proton Tagging

A process of Central Exclusive $π^+π^-$ production in proton-proton collisions and its theoretical description is presented. A possibility of its measurement, during the special low luminosity LHC runs, with the help of the ATLAS central detector for measuring pions and the ALFA stations for tagging the scattered protons is studied. A visible cross section is estimated to be 21 $μ$b for $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, which gives over 2000 events for 100 $μ$b$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Differential distributions in pion pseudorapidities, pion and proton transverse momenta as well as $π^+π^-$ invariant mass are shown and discussed.

Exclusive Measurement of the eta --> pi+ pi- gamma Decay

An exclusive measurement of the decay eta --> pi+ pi- gamma has been performed at the WASA facility at COSY. The eta mesons were produced in the fusion reaction pd --> 3He X at a proton beam momentum of 1.7 GeV/c. Efficiency corrected differential distributions have been extracted based on 13340\pm140 events after background subtraction. The measured pion angular distribution is consistent with a relative p-wave of the two-pion system, whereas the measured photon energy spectrum was found at variance with the simplest gauge invariant matrix element of eta --> pi+ pi- gamma. A parameterization of the data can be achieved by the additional inclusion of the empirical pion vector form factor multiplied by a first-order polynomial in the squared invariant mass of the pi+ pi- system.

Exclusive diffractive photoproduction of dileptons by timelike Compton scattering

We derive the forward photoproduction amplitude for the diffractive $γp \to l^+ l^- p$ reaction in the momentum space. within the formalism of $k_\perp$- factorization. Predictions for the $γp \to l^+ l^- p$ reaction are given using unintegrated gluon distribution from the literature. We calculate the total cross section as a function of photon-proton center of mass energy and the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pair. We also discuss whether the production of timelike virtual photons can be approximated by continuing to the spacelike domain $ q^2 < 0$. The present calculation provides an input for future predictions for exclusive hadroproduction in the $p p \to p l^+ l^- p$ reaction.

Nonperturbative and spin effects in the central exclusive production of tensor $χ_c(2^+)$ meson

We discuss central exclusive production (CEP) of the tensor $χ_c(2^{+})$ meson in proton-(anti)proton collisions at Tevatron, RHIC and LHC energies. The amplitude for the process is derived within the $k_t$-factorisation approach. Differential and total cross sections are calculated for several unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDFs). We compare exclusive production of all charmonium states $χ_c(0^+),\,χ_c(1^+)$ and $χ_c(2^+)$. Equally good description of the recent Tevatron data is achieved both with Martin-Ryskin phenomenological UGDF and UGDF based on unified BFKL-DGLAP approach. Unlike for Higgs production, the main contribution to the diffractive amplitude of heavy quarkonia comes from nonperturbative region of gluon transverse momenta $Q_{\perp}<1\,\GeV$. At $y \approx$ 0, depending on UGDF we predict the contribution of $χ_c(1^+,2^+)$ to the $J/Ψ+ γ$ channel to be comparable or larger than that of the $χ_c(0^+)$ one. This is partially due to a significant contribution from lower polarization states $λ=0$ for $χ_c(1^+)$ and $λ=0,\,\pm 1$ for $χ_c(2^+)$ meson. Corresponding theoretical uncertainties are discussed.

Central exclusive photoproduction at the LHC

Protons and antiprotons at collider energies are a source of high energy Weizsaecker--Williams photons. This opens up a possibility to study at the LHC exclusive photoproduction of heavy vector mesons at energies much larger than possible at the HERA accelerator. We present selected results of our detailed studies of various distributions for the production of heavy quarkonia (e.g. rapidity, transverse momenta, azimuthal angles). We give predictions for LHC energies. Our calculations are based on modelling the photoproduction amplitudes in a k_\perp-factorisation approach which is checked against HERA data. We also discuss the exclusive photoproduction of Z^0 bosons.

Diffractive production of chi(c)(0+,1+,2+) mesons at LHC, Tevatron and RHIC

We consider exclusive double diffractive production of scalar χ_c(0^+), axial-vector χ_c(1^+) and tensor χ_c(2^+) charmonia in proton-(anti)proton collisions at different energies. The corresponding amplitudes for these processes are derived within the k_t-factorisation approach and the corresponding cross section is calculated with different unintegrated gluon distribution functions (UGDFs) known from the literature. We compare exclusive production of all charmonium states χ_c(0^+), χ_c(1^+) and χ_c(2^+) including branching fraction for radiative J/Ψ+ γdecay channel. Corresponding experimental consequences are discussed.

Heavy quark correlations in hadronic collisions

We discuss results of the $k_t$ - factorization approach for heavy quark-heavy antiquark correlations in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions for RHIC, Tevatron and LHC. We consider correlations in the azimuthal angle as well as in the two-dimensional space of transverse momentum of heavy quark and heavy antiquark. We compare results obtained with the help of different unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF) from the literature.

Gluon transverse momenta and charm quark-antiquark pair production in $p-\bar p$ collisions at Tevatron

We discuss and compare different approaches to include gluon transverse momenta for heavy quark-antiquark pair production. The correlations in azimuthal angle and in heavy quark, heavy antiquark transverse momenta are studied in detail. The results are illustrated with the help of different unintegrated gluon distribution functons (UGDF) from the literature. We compare results obtained with on-shell and off-shell matrix elements and kinematics and quantify where these effects are negligible and where they are essential. We concentrate on the region of asymmetric transverse momenta of charm quark and charm antiquark. Most of UGDFs lead in this corner of the phase space to almost full decorellation in azimuthal angle. We propose correlation observables to be best suited in order to test the existing models of UGDFs.

Remarks on heavy-quark production in photon-nucleon and photon-photon collisions

I discuss mechanisms of heavy quark production in (real) photon-nucleon and (real) photon - (real) photon collisions. In particular, I focuse on application of the Saturation Model. In addition to the main dipole-nucleon or dipole-dipole contribution included in recent analyses, I propose how to calculate within the same formalism the hadronic single-resolved contribution to heavy quark production. At high photon-photon energies this yields a sizeable correction of about 30-40 % for inclusive charm production and 15-20 % for bottom production. Adding all possible contributions to $e^+ e^- \to b \bar b X$ together removes a huge deficit observed in earlier works but does not solve the problem totally.

Unintegrated CCFM parton distributions and transverse momentum of gauge bosons

Transverse momentum distribution of gauge bosons $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ is calculated using unintegrated parton distributions obtained by solving leading order CCFM equation(s) in the impact parameter space. For illustration we compare the results of the fixed-order collinear, soft-gluon resummation and CCFM approaches. A parameter of a nonperturbative form factor is adjusted to the D0 data. In contrast to the collinear approach, the leading order calculation based on the unintegrated CCFM parton distributions generates transverse momentum distributions of gauge bosons, which are almost consistent with experimental data provided the parameter of the nonperturbative form factor is appropriately adjusted. The $W^+$-$W^-$ asymmetry is calculated as a function of the boson rapidity and transverse momentum. Predictions are given for RHIC and LHC.

Heavy quark production in photon-nucleon and photon-photon collisions

We discuss several mechanisms of heavy quark production in (real) photon-nucleon and (real) photon - (real) photon collisions. In particular we focuse on application of the Saturation Model. We discuss how to generalize the formula from virtual photon - proton scattering and analyze threshold effects. We discuss a possibility to measure the cross section for $γγ\to 2 c 2 \bar c$. In addition to the main dipole-dipole contribution included in a recent analysis, we propose how to calculate within the same formalism the hadronic single-resolved contribution to heavy quark production. At high energies this yields a sizeable correction of about 30-40 % for inclusive charm production and 15-20 % for bottom production. We consider a subasymptotic component to the dipole-dipole approach. We get a good description of recently measured $σ(γγ\to c \bar c X)$. Adding all possible contributions to $e^+ e^- \to b \bar b X$ together removes a huge deficit observed in earlier works but does not solve the problem totally. Whenever possible, we compare the present approach to the standard collinear one. We propose how to distinguish different mechanisms by measuring heavy quark-antiquark correlations.

Perturbative QCD versus pion exchange and hadronic FSI effects in the gamma gamma --> pi^+ pi^- reaction

The interplay of pQCD, pion exchange and FSI effects is studied for the gamma gamma --> pi^+ pi^- reaction in the region of 2 GeV < W_{gamma gamma} < 6 GeV. We find strong interference effects between pQCD and soft pion-exchange amplitudes up to W_{gamma gamma} ~ 4 GeV. We discuss to which extend the conventional hadronic FSI effects could cloud the pQCD effects. We study multipole soft and hard scattering effects as well as the coupling between final state hadronic channels. We show how the perturbative effects in gamma gamma --> rho rho may mix with perturbative effects in gamma gamma --> pi^+ pi^-. The effects discussed in this paper improve the agreement with the new data of the DELPHI and ALEPH collaborations. We give estimates of the onset of the pQCD regime. Predictions for gamma gamma --> pi^0 pi^0 are presented.

Nonpartonic components in the nucleon structure functions at small Q^2 in a broad range of x

We construct a simple two-phase model of the nucleon structure functions valid for both small and large Q^2 and in the broad range of Bjorken x. The model incorporates hadron dominance at small x and Q^2 and parton model at large Q^2. The VDM contribution is modified for small fluctuation times of the hadronic state of the photon. With two free parameters we describe SLAC, CERN NMC, Fermilab E665 and CERN BCDMS data for both proton and deuteron structure functions. Our model explains some phenomenological higher-twist effects extracted from earlier analyses. A good description of the NMC F_2^p(x) - F_2^n(x) data is obtained in contrast to other models in the literature. We predict faster vanishing of the partonic component at low Q^2 than previously expected and strong Q^2 dependence of the Gottfried Sum Rule below Q^2 ~ 4 GeV^2.

Do the E866 Drell Yan data change our picture of the chiral structure of the nucleon ?

We revisit the evaluation of the pionic mechanism of the $\bar{u}-\bar{d}$-asymmetry in the proton structure function. Our analysis is based on the extended AGK unitarity relation between contributions of different mechanisms to the inclusive particle production and the total photoabsorption cross-section (i.e. the proton structure function). We reanalyze the role of isovector reggeons in inclusive production of nucleons and Delta isobars in hadronic reactions. We find rather large contribution of reggeon-exchange induced production of Delta isobars. This leaves much less room for the pion-exchange induced mechanism of $Δ$ production and provides a constraint on the $πN Δ$ form factor. The production of leading pions in proton-proton collisions at ISR puts additional constraints on the $πNN$ vertex form factors. An extension of the AGK-rules to reggeon exchange suggests a negligible contribution to the proton structure function from DIS off the exchanged $ρ,a_2$ reggeons. All these constraints are used then to estimate the pion content of the nucleon and allow to calculate parameter-free the $x$-dependence of $\bar d - \bar u$. We discuss the violation of the Gottfried Sum Rule and $\bar d$-$\bar u$ asymmetry and compare to the one obtained from the E866 experiment at Fermilab. We estimate the background to the pion structure function being determined by the ZEUS and H1 collaborations at HERA from leading neutron experiments.

Reggeons in diffractive interactions in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

The "triple-Regge" analysis of subleading Reggeon contributions to the diffractive structure function in DIS at HERA is presented. The recently published data allow to estimate the only free parameter of the analysis related to the ratio of the RRP and PPP couplings. The large value of this ratio is prefered which is in agreement with analyses of soft hadronic interactions. The role of the subleading Reggeons as well as pions for the fast forward neutron production in diffractive processes is estimated. The forward piN state production is also discussed.

Flavour and Spin of the Proton and the Meson Cloud

We present a complete set of formulas for longitudinal momentum distribution functions (splitting functions) of mesons in the nucleon. It can be applied in the framework of convolution formalism to the deep-inelastic structure functions (quark distributions) of the nucleon viewed as a system composed of virtual 'mesons' and 'baryons'. Pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as octet and decuplet baryons are included. In contrast to many approaches in the literature the present approach ensures charge and momentum conservation by the construction. We present not only spin averaged splitting functions but also helicity dependent ones, which can be used to study the spin content of the nucleon. The cut-off parameters of the underlying form factors for different vertices are determined from high-energy particle production data. This information allows one to calculate the flavour and spin content of the nucleon. The value of the Gottfried Sum Rule obtained from our model (S_G = 0.224) nicely agrees with that obtained by the NMC. In addition, we calculate the x-dependence of the \bar d - \bar u asymmetry and get an impressive agreement with a recent fit of Martin-Stirling-Roberts. The calculated axial coupling constants for semileptonic decays of the octet baryons agree with the experimental data already with SU(6) wave function for the bare nucleon. Although we get improvements for the Ellis-Jaffe Sum Rules for the proton and neutron in comparison to the naive quark model, the MCM is not sufficient to reproduce the experimental data.

How to measure the pion structure function at HERA

We suggest a method of determination of the pion structure function down to x \simeq 10^{-4} based on semi-exclusive deep inelastic scattering off protons. The idea is to exploit the nonperturbative πN$ and πΔFock components of the nucleon, which contribute significantly to deep inelastic scattering and dominate the fragmentation of protons into fast neutrons and deltas. The intrinsic factorization properties of the semi-exclusive cross section give a good test for the validity of this approach.

Testing the meson cloud in the nucleon in Drell-Yan processes

We discuss the present status of the \bar u-\bar d asymmetry in the nucleon and analize the quantities which are best suited to verify the asymmetry. We find that the Drell-Yan asymmetry is the quantity insensitive to the valence quark distributions and very sensitive to the flavour asymmetry of the sea. We compare the prediction of the meson cloud model with different experimental data including the Fermilab E772 data and recent data of the NA51 Collaboration at CERN and make predictions for the planned Drell-Yan experiments.

Theoretical Interpretation of the NE18 Experiment on Nuclear Transparency in A(e,e'p) Scattering

The spectral function, measured in $A(e,e'p)$ reactions, is distorted by the final-state interaction of the struck proton with the residual nucleus. This causes a broadening of the observed transverse-momentum distribution which is large even in the $d(e,e'p)$ reaction. We discuss the effects of this $p_{\perp}$-broadening on the nuclear transparency measured in the recent NE18 experiment. Within conventional Glauber theory we can describe the measurements. Transparency effects are thus small in agreement with our earlier predictions.
