Electromagnetic Structure of Few-Nucleon Ground States

Experimental form factors of the hydrogen and helium isotopes, extracted from an up-to-date global analysis of cross sections and polarization observables measured in elastic electron scattering from these systems, are compared to predictions obtained in three different theoretical approaches: the first is based on realistic interactions and currents, including relativistic corrections (labeled as the conventional approach); the second relies on a chiral effective field theory description of the strong and electromagnetic interactions in nuclei (labeled $χ$EFT); the third utilizes a fully relativistic treatment of nuclear dynamics as implemented in the covariant spectator theory (labeled CST). For momentum transfers below $Q \lesssim 5$ fm$^{-1}$ there is satisfactory agreement between experimental data and theoretical results in all three approaches. However, at $Q \gtrsim 5$ fm$^{-1}$, particularly in the case of the deuteron, a relativistic treatment of the dynamics, as is done in the CST, is necessary. The experimental data on the deuteron $A$ structure function extend to $Q \simeq 12$ fm$^{-1}$, and the close agreement between these data and the CST results suggests that, even in this extreme kinematical regime, there is no evidence for new effects coming from quark and gluon degrees of freedom at short distances.

Quark model with chiral-symmetry breaking and confinement in the Covariant Spectator Theory

We propose a model for the quark-antiquark interaction in Minkowski space using the Covariant Spectator Theory. We show that with an equal-weighted scalar-pseudoscalar structure for the confining part of our interaction kernel the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity is preserved and our model complies with the Adler-zero constraint for pi-pi-scattering imposed by chiral symmetry.

A covariant constituent-quark formalism for mesons

Using the framework of the Covariant Spectator Theory (CST) [1] we are developing a covariant model formulated in Minkowski space to study mesonic structure and spectra. Treating mesons as effective $q\bar{q}$ states, we focused in [2] on the nonrelativistic bound-state problem in momentum space with a linear confining potential. Although integrable, this kernel has singularities which are difficult to handle numerically. In [2] we reformulate it into a form in which all singularities are explicitely removed. The resulting equations are then easier to solve and yield accurate and stable solutions. In the present work, the same method is applied to the relativistic case, improving upon the results of the one-channel spectator equation (1CSE) given in [3].

The shape of the $Δ$ baryon in a covariant spectator quark model

Using a covariant spectator quark model that describes the recent lattice QCD data for the $Δ$ electromagnetic form factors and all available experimental data on $γN \to Δ$ transitions, we analyze the charge and magnetic dipole distributions of the $Δ$ baryon and discuss its shape. We conclude that the quadrupole moment of the $Δ$ is a good indicator of the deformation and that the $Δ^+$ charge distribution has an oblate shape. We also calculate transverse moments and find that they do not lead to unambiguous conclusions about the underlying shape.

Short-range three-nucleon forces and low-energy constants

The 3N forces due to pi-rho, pi-sigma and pi-omega exchanges following from the nucleon Born diagrams and diagrams with an intermediate N^{*}(1440) are re-analyzed. The cancellation between pi-sigma and pi-omega forces is rather sensitive to the values of the coupling constants and to the form of the piNN vertex. Experimental uncertainties in the parameters of the TM pi-pi potential are assessed. They lead to uncertainties in theoretical predictions of the triton binding energy of about 0.4 MeV. The low-energy limit of pi-sigma and pi-omega potentials is performed. It defines the coupling constants of effective contact piNNNN vertices, which are compared with the corresponding contact vertices of Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Off-Mass-Shell $π$N Scattering and $pp \to pp π^0$

We adapt the off-shell $π$N amplitude of the Tucson-Melbourne three-body force to the half-off-shell amplitude of the pion rescattering contribution to $pp \to pp π^0$ near threshold. This {\em pion} rescattering contribution, together with the impulse term, provides a good description of the data when the half-off-shell amplitude is linked to the phenomenological invariant amplitudes obtained from meson factory $π$N scattering data.
