Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5$^\circ$ off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be $1.26 \pm 0.18\,(stat.+syst.) \times 10^{-39} $ $\mathrm{cm^{2}/nucleon}$ on CH and $1.44 \pm 0.21\,(stat.+syst.) \times 10^{-39} $ $\mathrm{cm^{2}/nucleon}$ on H$_{2}$O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the NEUT v5.3.2 and GENIE v2.8.0 MC generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

Results from the T2K experiment on neutrino mixing including a new far detector $μ$-like sample

We have made improved measurements of three-flavor neutrino mixing with 19.7(16.3)$\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti-)neutrino-enhanced beam modes. A new sample of muon-neutrino events with tagged pions has been added at the far detector, as well as new proton and photon-tagged samples at the near detector. Significant improvements have been made to the flux and neutrino interaction modeling. T2K data continue to prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2θ_{23}$ with a near-maximal value of the charge-parity violating phase with best-fit values in the normal ordering of $δ_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{CP}}=-2.18\substack{+1.22 \\ -0.47}$, $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.559\substack{+0.018 \\ -0.078}$ and $Δm^2_{32}=(+2.506\substack{+0.039 \\ -0.052})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$.

Acoustic Filter Design Using Temperature Tuning

The material properties selection for designing acoustic filters with optimal performance over a range of frequencies requires considerable effort to fabricate and test laboratory samples. To simplify this procedure, one may test a single sample at various temperatures to design an acoustic filter for a desired band-width. The essential idea is to fabricate a single layered periodic elastic composite with constituent materials that have temperature-dependent properties. As temperature is changed, such a composite exhibits a band structure that changes with the change in temperature. Once a desired band structure is attained and the corresponding constituent properties are identified, then new constituents that have those properties at the required temperature can be selected and new sample fabricated. We fabricated a 2-phase composite with periodic layers of polyurea and steel. The temperature is changed from -20°C to 60°C and ultrasonic measurements are performed on the sample over 0.15 to 2.2MHz at each temperature. The first three pass bands are captured experimentally and significant change in the band structure is observed over the test temperature range. Experimental transmission spectrum at each temperature is compared with the theoretical band structure and it is shown that good agreement exists for the observed variation in the band structure.

Weak ferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric BiPd 4K superconductor

We report synthesis of non-centrosymmetric BiPd single crystal by self flux method. The BiPd single crystal is crystallized in monoclinic structure with the P21 space group. Detailed SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) results show that the crystals are formed in slab like morphology with homogenous distribution of Bi and Pd. The magnetic susceptibility measurement confirmed that the BiPd compound is superconducting below 4K. Further, BiPd exhibits weak ferromagnetism near the superconducting transition temperature in isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity also confirmed that the BiPd single crystal is superconducting at Tc=4K. Magneto transport measurements showed that the estimated Hc2(0) value is around 7.0kOe. We also obtained a sharp peak in heat capacity Cp(T) measurements at below 4K due to superconducting ordering. The normalized specific-heat jump, DC/γTc, is 1.52, suggesting the BiPd to be an intermediate BCS coupled superconductor. The pressure dependent electrical resistivity shows the Tc decreases with increasing applied pressure and the obtained dTc/dP is -0.62K/Gpa.

Fragile charge order in the non-superconducting ground state of the underdoped high temperature superconductors

The normal state in the hole underdoped copper oxide superconductors has proven to be a source of mystery for decades. The measurement of a small Fermi surface by quantum oscillations on suppression of superconductivity by high applied magnetic fields, together with complementary spectroscopic measurements in the hole underdoped copper oxide superconductors, point to a nodal electron pocket from charge order in YBa2Cu3O6+x. Here we report quantum oscillation measurements in the closely related stoichiometric material YBa2Cu4O8, which reveal similar Fermi surface properties to YBa2Cu3O6+x, despite an absence of charge order signatures in the same spectroscopic techniques such as x-ray diffraction that revealed signatures of charge order in YBa2Cu3O6+x. Fermi surface reconstruction in YBa2Cu4O8 is suggested to occur from magnetic field enhancement of charge order that is rendered fragile in zero magnetic fields because of its potential unconventional symmetry, and/or its occurrence as a subsidiary to more robust underlying electronic correlations.

Unconventional Fermi surface in an insulating state

Insulators occur in more than one guise, a recent finding was a class of topological insulators, which host a conducting surface juxtaposed with an insulating bulk. Here we report the observation of an unusual insulating state with an electrically insulating bulk that simultaneously yields bulk quantum oscillations with characteristics of an unconventional Fermi liquid. We present quantum oscillation measurements of magnetic torque in high purity single crystals of the Kondo insulator SmB6, which reveal quantum oscillation frequencies characteristic of a large three-dimensional conduction electron Fermi surface similar to the metallic rare earth hexaborides such as PrB6 and LaB6. The quantum oscillation amplitude strongly increases at low temperatures, appearing strikingly at variance with conventional metallic behaviour.

Anisotropic Magneto Resistance and Planar Hall Effect at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ Heterointerfaces: Effect of Carrier Confinement on Magnetic Interactions

The confinement of the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG), preferential occupancy of the Ti 3d orbital and strong spin-orbit coupling at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface play a significant role in its emerging properties. Here we report a fourfold oscillation in the anisotropic magneto resistance (AMR) and the observation of planar Hall effect (PHE) at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterointerface. We evaluate the carrier confinement effects on the AMR and find that the fourfold oscillation appears only for the case of 2DEG system while it is twofold for the 3D system. As the fourfold oscillation fits well to the phenomenological model for a cubic symmetry system, we attribute this oscillation to the anisotropy in the magnetic scattering arising from the interaction of electrons with the localized magnetic moments coupled to the crystal symmetry. The AMR behavior is further found to be sensitive to applied gate electric field, emphasizing the significance of spin-orbit coupling at the interface. These confinement effects suggest that the magnetic interactions are predominant at the interface, and the gate electric field modulation of AMR suggest the possible gate tunable magnetic interactions in these systems. The observed large PHE further indicates that the in plane nature of magnetic ordering arises from the in-plane Ti 3dxy orbitals.

Evolution of variable range hopping in strongly localized two dimensional electron gas at NdAlO3/SrTiO3 (100) heterointerfaces

We report evolution of the two-dimensional electron gas behavior at the NdAlO3/SrTiO3 heterointerfaces with varying thicknesses of the NdAlO3 overlayer. The samples with a thicker NdAlO3 show strong localizations at low temperatures and the degree of localization is found to increase with the NdAlO3 thickness. The T -1/3 temperature dependence of the sheet resistance at low temperatures and the magnetoresistance study reveal that the conduction is governed by a two-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism in this strong localized regime. We attribute this thickness dependence of the transport properties of the NdAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces to the interface strain induced by the overlayers.

Unexpected Anisotropic Two Dimensional Electron Gas at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (110) Interface

The observation of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) (1, 2), superconductivity (3, 4), magnetic effects (5) and electronic phase separation (6-8) at the interfaces of insulating oxides, especially LaAlO3/SrTiO3, has further enhanced the potential of complex oxides for novel electronics. The occurrence of the 2DEG is strongly believed to be driven by the polarization discontinuity (9) at the interface between the two oxides. In this scenario, the crystal orientation plays an important role and no conductivity would be expected for e.g., the interface between LaAlO3 and (110)-oriented SrTiO3, which should not have a polarization discontinuity (10, 11). Here, we report the observation of unexpected conductivity at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface prepared on (110)-oriented SrTiO3. The conductivity was further found to be strongly anisotropic, with the ratio of the conductance along the different directions parallel to the substrate surface showing a remarkable dependence on the oxygen pressure during deposition. The conductance and its anisotropy are discussed based on the atomic structure at the interface, as revealed by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) and further supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Carrier freeze-out induced metal-insulator transition in oxygen deficient SrTiO3 films

We report the optical, electrical transport, and magnetotransport properties of high quality oxygen deficient SrTiO3 (STO) single crystal film fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and reduced in the vacuum chamber. The oxygen vacancy distribution in the thin film is expected to be uniform. By comparing the electrical properties with oxygen deficient bulk STO, it was found that the oxygen vacancies in bulk STO is far from uniform over the whole material. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) observed in the oxygen deficient STO film was found to be induced by the carrier freeze-out effect. The low temperature frozen state can be re-excited by an electric field, Joule heating, and surprisingly also a large magnetic field.

Study of transfer reaction channel in $^{12}$C + $^{27}$Al system

The 1p transfer channel in the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction has been studied at E$_{lab}$ = 73, 81 and 85 MeV. The finite range distorted wave Born approximation calculations have been performed using phenomenological optical model potential to analyze the angular distributions for 3 transitions populating the 0.0, 1.78 and 4.62 MeV states of $^{28}$Si and 2 transitions populating the 2.12 and 4.44 MeV states of $^{11}$B via the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction. The spectroscopic strengths as well as spectroscopic factors have been extracted for all the five states. The extracted strength values are compared with shell model calculations.
