Soft-and-Hard/D'B' Boundary Conditions and their Realization by Electromagnetic Media

A layer of uniaxial medium with large axial permittivity and permeability can be used as a quarter-wave transformer with interesting properties. By increasing the transverse permittivity and permeability the transformer becomes a thin sheet. It is shown that the recently introduced SHDB boundary conditions, generalizing the soft-and-hard and DB conditions, realized by the interface of a skewon-axion medium, can be transformed to form a novel class of SHD'B' boundary conditions which generalizes the soft-and-hard and D'B' boundary conditions. Reflection of a plane wave from a planar SHD'B' boundary is considered by numerical examples revealing an interesting narrow beam with radical change of reflection for certain values of parameters and incidence angles.

Realization of a spherical boundary by a layer of wave-guiding medium

In this paper the concept of wave-guiding medium, previously introduced for planar structures, is defined for the spherically symmetric case. It is shown that a quarter-wavelength layer of such a medium serves as a transformer of boundary conditions between two spherical interfaces. As an application, the D'B'-boundary condition, requiring vanishing of normal derivatives of the normal components of D and B field vectors, is realized by transforming the DB-boundary conditions. To test the theory, scattering from a spherical DB object covered by a layer of wave-guiding material is compared to the corresponding scattering from an ideal D'B' sphere, for varying medium parameters of the layer.

Realization of the D'B' boundary condition

In this paper we find a realization for the D'B'-boundary conditions, which imposes vanishing normal derivatives of the normal components of the D and B fields. The implementation of the DB boundary, requiring vanishing normal components of D and B, is known. It is shown that the realization of the D'B' boundary can be based on a layer of suitable metamaterial, called the wave-guiding quarter-wave transformer, which transforms the DB boundary to the D'B' boundary. In an appendix, the mixed-impedance boundary, which is a generalization of both DB and D'B' boundaries, is shown to transform to another mixed-impedance boundary through the same transformer.

Backward-wave regime and negative refraction in chiral composites

Possibilities to realize a negative refraction in chiral composites in in dual-phase mixtures of chiral and dipole particles is studied. It is shown that because of strong resonant interaction between chiral particles (helixes) and dipoles, there is a stop band in the frequency area where the backward-wave regime is expected. The negative refraction can occur near the resonant frequency of chiral particles. Resonant chiral composites may offer a root to realization of negative-refraction effect and superlenses in the optical region.
